There’s a report in the Star today that Remi Garde has decided not to some to Newcastle in the summer, and it’s looking more and more like the new head coach will be another Englishman – either Steve McClaren or John Carver.
Remi Garde – staying in France
The Star is reporting that Remi Garde has decided to stay in France for what they are calling family reasons – so we suppose the only two foreign coaches Newcastle might appoint are German Thomas Tuchel, formerly of Mainz, or Frenchman Christophe Galtier of St Etienne.
But it’s looking like Newcastle will take the easy and safe choice, and appoint another Englishman into the job, and they will be willing to work under the strict constraints of owner Mike Ashley.
If Derby County don’t get promoted, it will in all likelihood be Steve McClaren, and otherwise we suppose John Carver will get the job, even though he has a poor record in charge of Newcastle this year.
It seems the powers that be at Newcastle are more intent on maintaining the status quo and the way Ashley has run the club since he arrived in 2007, rather than try to build up a top side.
If Steve McClaren or John Carver are appointed, it’s going to be difficult for Newcastle even to maintain their mediocrity in the Premier League and finish in the top ten each season.
But Newcastle have only done that twice in the last seven seasons under Ashley’s policies, with one of them being 10th place, and we are currently in 13th place in the lague with eight games to play.
And since we are essentially 8 points out of 10th place when you take into consideration our very poor goal difference, it seems very unlikely we can make top ten this season.
So that will be two times in the top ten in eight seasons under Mike Ashley, and we had hoped he would realize his policies at Newcastle just don’t work.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case.

In some utopian world where Ashley and co aren’t chasing Mcclaren
Would anyone take Sean Dyche?
He is working with next to nothing at Burnley but he has them playing well and has developed them as players.
His stock is certainly on the rise among footballing circles.
Bonus he may be able to lure Ings with him

I’ve always wonde how it goes when applying for managerial roles.
It doesn’t surprise me if the applicants included the likes of Ince and Barnes who for some reason refuse to admit that it isn’t racism that prevents them from getting jobs it’s because thymus really aren’t that good.

Comment #48If McClaren is offered the job he will take it irrespective of what happens to Derby.
He is the safest bet. He knows the Premier League and he knows the culture of the North East. He has worked before as a Head Coach under the European system of football management and has worked extensively with foreign players in particular the Dutch. He was one of the key coaches that brought all the ManU talent to international and national prominence. I believe it was McClaren that tipped Newcastle off to them getting Tiote.

It was Steve Mcclaren that recommended tiote to Carr.
I know tiote is a pariah to fans but I still believe he was an excellent buy for £3.5m even if his form for the last year has been woeful. Had he kept free of injuries he has shown he is capable of dominating games and I think enforcers are sadly out of fashion in today’s game but arsenal could really do with someone like him which is why I believe they are often linked.

Which Man U talent did McClaren bring to national and international prominence? He didn’t join them until 99, by which time the talented youngsters had already broken into the team, and been playing for a few years.
He was only with Man U for 2 years, people massively overrate his influence at Man U.

I’m not down with all e Mcclaren bashing even if he is not my first choice. (I would take him over Tuchel though)
I am worried that if he does come which is looking more and more likely that he is not going to hair a fair crack because of the fans attitudes.
Even the headline off ed’s article says it all.
Fair enough if he isn’t peoples first choice but I believe people should get behind him until he proves otherwise. I don’t beleive in prejudging.
AVB failed at Chelsea but when he was sacked by Spurs (due to fan pressure) he actually had he highest points total Spurs had ever had at that point in the season therefore I think he was somewhat doing a good job there.
Even wenger was doing little in Japan before arsenal which was a left field appointment.
Pulis was floundering at Stoke before he left and then came back and did a great job at palace and now WBA.
I’ve quoted this before but as John Wayne once said “I didn’t vote for him, but he’s my president”
That’s the view I echo with Mcclaren.

I think if McClaren came he would be given a chance – Pardew was hardly a popular appointment, but was given plenty of opportunity by the majority of fans.
I’d prefer Tuchel, but would take McClaren over Galtier. It isn’t really his managerial or coaching abilities that worry me, he is without doubt one of the countries better coaches with reasonable experience. Every time he has gone to a job where there is pressure on he has struggled. When the spotlight and pressure is off, he can do a decent job. I just can’t see him coping up here.
Pulis is a different situation, I think he had grown stale, and taken them as far as he could.

Full of praise is very different to having a significant influence. He was there for just 2 years, he may have been a very good coach, but he was not there long enough to have the significant impact that Slank mentions in bringing players to international prominence.

As I said to LGF, I don’t think he would cope with the pressure of the Newcastle job, that is my biggest worry re McClaren. As far as coaching goes he is decent.
It is probably too early in his career, and not something that would appeal to him, but he could do a good job as a Technical Director overseeing a younger, less experienced modern and progressive coach.

Comment #61If he plays colback LB and Goufran in MF,just like he did last week or so,we’ll get punished and certain to lose this massive game.I will be happy with a draw. However if he plays colback in MF & Jonas at LB,we have a chance to win it.Looks it will be the battle in MF that will decide who’ll come on top at the end.So he must not ruin colback’s battle and energy in mf and sissoko’s power drive by playing him deep.

I think tuchel would flop. I’ve said it before but I honestly believe his disciplinarian ways will rub our players the wrong way.
There is a huge culture difference between the french and the Germans which is the only reason I’d prefer Mcclaren. Tuchel is no doubt a great tactician but you need to be able to manage the players to get your way across.
You’re right about praise vs influence but I guess ferries praise was as a result of the work he did. I don’t think its like fergie to blow smoke up a mans behind for something as simple as chronyism.
On pardew I don’t feel he was given a chance by the fans. He was given more than enough and more than he deserved by the board but fans were still against him after we finished 5th at which point nobody could tell how much we were going to nosedive.

Re pressure. Ironically that is my main worry about Garde who needed a break after 4 years at Lyon who have less fanatical fans. And it was very early into his career.
I love favre’ outlook but again I worry about the switch from Germany.
Galtier grows on me every time I read or see an interview. He is clearly a very smart man and very much of the wenger mold by the looks of things.

Unfortunately I don’t think we have many options at full back.
There are no excuses for Gouffran at dm though. Work rate aside it is not his place.
I worry about anita in general but he did play the lion share of a season at rb for ajax in light of injuries and on the slightly plus side. He was better there than MYM.
People keep asking me for my preferred line up and for the first time ever I am completely stumped

I’m not saying McClaren wasn’t a good coach at Man U. It has been fairly obvious through most of his career that he isa good coach. Fergie will have handed out praise for that. I often see McClaren praised for the work he did at Man U, but he joined what was already a very successful unit, and only stayed 2 years.
I’d happily see a number of players shipped out (provided they were being replaced well) to have a very good tactician and a disciplinarian in. You mentioned Dyche earlier, but he has a reputation for being pretty strict and a disciplinarian as well. Provided you have players willing to put in the work and hard yards, then it shouldn’t be an issue.

Comment #68I do feel for carver with the injuries we have nu I don’t think he’d do much better without them.
And switched on coach would simply revert to a 442 play 2 organised banks of four and hit on the counter in this situation.
The reason 442 is so favoured in this country is because of the simplicity and ease of which it is to set up with.
When you have players running between the lines and switching positions it adds creativity but it also opens you up to attacks.
I know we very much need and crave a team that plays beautiful, creative football but with the situation we are in I’d rather we get stuck in and grind out wins than try and fail.

Galtier is very defensive, unless we have a huge change in Ashley’s current vision for the club then we will always be between 8th and 16th. The least I’d want given that is an entertaining brand of football, I don’t see that Galtier would give us that. Granted, I’m not sure which of the managers linked would definitely give us that, but Galtier is the least likely I think.
I’ve never been convinced on Garde, but would be willing to give him a chance.

Me and lg are simply having a debate within the confines of reality.
So unless you are leading some radical revolution please kindly take a step down from that donkey posing as a high horse.
Mcclaren would be an improvement on carver and dare I say it even Pardew.

Dyche has a squad that very much suits his style. Whoever gets the job the links between the manager and Graham Carr need to be better. Too often under Pardew we bought players that didn’t suit Pardew. We need them on the same page, and players coming in who suit the style of play and a personality that fits.
