Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace are going from strength to strength, and after the half-time score at home to Palace today was 0-0, Palace blew the Black Cats away with four goals in the first 18 minutes of the second half before Connor Whickham scored in stoppage time with a consolation goal.
It’s a pity for the Black Cats that it’s not every week they can play Newcastle and win a game – in the last three seasons they have taken 16 points out of a possible 18 against Newcastle.
Alan Pardew and Dick Advocaat today
Palace have 26 points in 13 league games this year
Yannick Bolasie – who is a star player for the London side got a second half hat-trick, and that takes Palace to 11th place and 7 points above Newcastle, and this year they have gained a massive 17 points on the Carver-led Magpies.
So it was a great move for Alan Pardew to move to Palace – at least for Crystal Palace it was – and Alan wins his first game against Sunderland since August of 2011, when we won 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.
If Alan continues this phenomenal run, he’s going to be Manager of the Season again – for his third manager award in just three years – after he won two of them for getting Newcastle into 5th place in 2012.
A monumental achievement given how Mike Ashley keeps selling out best players, so it’s almost impossible to build a good side.
Palace now have 42 points after 32 games, so we suppose Alan will get that rumored £1M bonus if he keeps Palace up, and that’s 26 points from their 13 league games so far this year.
One relegation side coming through at the moment are Leicester City, managed by former Newcastle coach Nigel Pearson, and they came from behind at West Brom to win 3-2, and now have 25 points and two wins in a row.
Jamie Vardy scored a sensational stoppage time winner for all 3 points, and they are now only 3 points form being safe with a game in hand.
Hull remain in a slump and on 28 points, one point behind Sunderland.
Aston Villa side took all 3 points at Tottenham and that’s a massive 3 points for Villa and who scored – who else – Christian Benteke – and that’s a fabulous 8 goals in his last seven games.
Villa are on 32 points and now are just 3 points behind Newcastle.
With Stoke drawing with West Ham 1-1, they are in 10th place on 42 points but have a much superior goal difference than Newcastle.
We are just waiting for Lee Charnley to come out and say 10th is still the goal for this season.
The powers that be at Newcastle should have thought of that in January before they wrecked our season – for the second year running.

You suggest that people are wrong for pointing out that Pardew always seems to do well in the early days of managing a particular club, before freefalling and losing his way with the players and with his tactics.
Pointing out that Pardew has done brilliantly at Palace (which he has, nobody is denying that) does not prove your point. You’re simply agreeing with the fact that he is always relatively successful at the beginning of his reign.
We will wait and see next season whether his success continues. I personally don’t mind the thought of him doing well, I’m just disappointed that it wasn’t with us.

Yes, but if you were Carr, and Charnley said: ‘I can’t get anybody better. It’ll have to be JC.” Wouldn’t you tell him he was mad?

Maybe he did? Maybe he was overruled not only by Charnley but by Ashley himself? If that were the case what could Carr do?
This is all conjecture obviously just to show how little we all know how the process went down. What I would be concerned about is how bullish Carver seems to be in recent press conferences and interviews about how he seems certain he will be in a job next year as head coach. He’s not said it explicitly but the impression I am getting is that he’s going to be here as boss next season.

I think Carver will never have the ability to spin some PR like Pardew could, not enough to convince the media, the guy isn’t a good speaker in front of a camera.
I also agree he has become a mouthpiece for the club. Did you see what I posted about the Leicester FA cup game?
Well the story that 6 players refused to travel to the game were true. My step-uncle has a grandkid in the academy and beardsley told him so himself.
Now why would a club ask 6 injured players to travel to a game anyway, surely rest/physio would be needed, not a bus/plane journey. So proves they weren’t injured.
As does the fact they played both games before and after, coupled with the fact we always have injuries for that round of the cup.
For carver to come out and tell us they were genuinely injured is a disgrace, but to come out and tell us he is a true fan is much worse, a true fan wouldn’t do this…he is now nothing more than an employee.

Comment #45Regardless what Pardew is doing it’s nothing to do with us anymore. If he was still her we’d probably be around seven points better off and coasting towards 8-10th, there would be nothing to look forward to this season, now that he has gone with his shit and barely sustainable football Mike Ashley’s greed and lies have been well and truly exposed, we can’t blame Pardew for not signing players anymore, we can’t blame him for putting round pegs in square holes. If he was still here on 42 points ‘The board’ would see everything as going to plan, the apathy would have worsened and we would have had more of the same next year. This simply can not continue, at least now we have something to look forward to and that is hopefully watching Charnely squirm and force them in to some positive action, the excitement of a relegation battle also looks on the cards.

You aren’t seeing the point….if we Charnley and Ashley can’t agree to sign managers that Carr has recommended then what more can Carr do?
He can’t sign the deal himself, he can’t pay the manager he wants from his own pocket.
It’s the same why he recommends players for us like Remy, Bony, Gomis, etc and the club simply don’t offer enough money to get them.
Carr (or any scout) can’t do a damn thing if they people who negotiate the deals and pay out the money aren’t willing to do so.

Well I had heard certain stories that I won’t repeat intimating that a certain club “legend” in the employ of the club is anything but the nice guy he would like to have you think.
The way I see it, a “proper” fan wouldn’t work for the club that exists as NUFC. A “proper” fan would walk away, especially given that they have an inside scoop that we certainly don’t want to compete for cups and are happy enough with mid-table. What sort of “proper” fan would work for their club when it operates like that?

I still think we are safe, maybe me being naive but can’t see the 5/6 clubs below us having enough games left to get the 9 point some of them need to send us down, just seems too much for now….but then again you never know.
I agree with you though, Pardew leaving has left Ashley totally exposed, he is getting the stick from the media now, all fans are blaming him (well 99%) so hopefully it should be easier to unite us all in a campaign to pile on pressure.

Comment #51How anyone can blame Carr is beyond me completely, he has recommended, Tiote, Cabaye, Remy, Bony, Lacazette, Alderwield, PEA, HBA and more, of course he has some duds, look at SFA over the years, SBR had Rivaldo and Romartio but also Lua Lua and Carl Cort, some work some don’t, his success rate would be a lot higher if Ashley stumped up the cash for his first choices rather than those that are eventually injured, out of contract or generally at the bottom of the list.

Ashley doesn’t sign the best person for the job in a footballing sense. If that were the case Carver would never have been let near the position. If Carver doesn’t get the job it’ll be because he is perilously much more shite at the job than Ashley expected.
As someone who will do Ashley’s bidding, try and spin lies to the fans, and put up with Ashley’s nonsense, Carver is ideal.

I would have no issue with Carver being a mouthpiece if he didn’t say he was a fan, after all many people do jobs the don’t agree with to earn money, and he will have very limited options compared to somebody like Pardew if he walked away.
But by telling us every day he is a true/proper fan he is flat out lying to us and himself, .Even he can’t be deluded enough to believe the rubbish about kicking on and pushing to the nex level.

‘Pardew likes square pegs in round holes’.
Does any manager really like to play square pegs in round holes, or do they do it for lack of any better alternative ?
When you’re faced with a bunch of cut price unknowns new to the premiership, in your squad at the beginning of the season, you’re pretty well obliged to fit them in where you can even if none of them is the player or players you were hoping the owner would bring on board. Hence Perez, a guy of undoubted talent, playing most matches up front by himself, for lack of better options.

How long did it take to get Debuchy, we could have had him that summer for 500K more, what a difference that would have made to our season, but no we had Danny Simpson who was purplish so we struggled on until relegation loomed then paid out the dough anyway, that 500K probably cost us millions in place money.

I never believed Carver was a good coach in all the time he has worked for us so he was never high in my estimations. I suspected he was merely a right hand man to a brilliant manager when he worked under SBR. However, the very fact that he uttered Pards in the same breath as SBR was grossly offensive and put him even lower in my estimations.
Carver is a bought and paid for shill. He’s a scab who has well and truly crossed the picket line.

I’d be inclined to agree with you that a manager doesn’t like to play square pegs in round holes but having seen Pardew do that when more obvious options were available I do question it.
As for carver….well where to start, sunderland maybe.
He had Jonas centre mid and colback left back, ideally would switch those two.
He then had gouffran centre mid and abeid on the bench, obviously makes sense to switch those.
Alternatively if abeid wasn’t ready he could have played gouffran wide ride and had cabella in the middle with sissoko and colback holding.
He could have played rivier up front with perez just off him.
There were plenty of options he had, but he didn’t take them for whatever reason.

I also liked Danny Simpson and would have him at the club now, he wasn’t a great player but would have been a more than capable understudy to Jaanmatt, but we have footballers at Newcastle and if you’re a footballer you can fill in anywhere, 20K a week is far too much to sit on the bench.

No idea, but I imagine it’s like any job. You get used to the lifestyle that money brings, you have an accordingly priced house, new cars every so often, higher level of holidays, treat the family, etc etc.
Therefore he can’t walk away from that at his age, he’s only 50, so will want to hang on another 5/10 years or so I’d imagine.

My issue is that we let very capable players leave the club while they could have done a job for us. While it may have been a bit much to promise Nolan 5 years at the money he was looking for, he has shown that he had that in him. We shouldn’t have let Barton go as he is still showing he is PL class. Danny Simpson, and even the likes of Danny Guthrie would have been a decent shout to bring off the bench. Had we retained these players, and supplemented them with the others we have brought in, we could have built a half decent squad.
But it’s MA we’re talking about here so it was never going to happen. We’ve hardly any “top” players left to flog, but I’m sure he’ll find a way.

Comment #68As the average lifespan of a Premiership manager has been under two years for the last five seasons it seems fair to say that almost all managers suffer from ‘second season syndrome’. Pardew is far from unique in this respect. Whether this is down to psychology or shite tactics and the inevitable bad runs of form and luck is virtually impossible to say. He has done us real favour – not by leaving mid season but he did protect Ashley in his slipstream. He has also shown up Carver to be 4th rate (not 3rd as somebody said yesterday). There is only one person responsible for the fortunes of our club on the pitch over the last 8 seasons and it is not the head coach or manager who can only play the hand he has been dealt.

But how can you question his new role when you don’t question him as a scout.
He clearly recommended some decent managers, all within the reach of our club, yet the club (Charnley/Ashley) could not stump up the cash to get them.
It’s the same with players, we sign a few duds as the club only buy from the bargain bin on players they think they can make a profit.

Ciaran,
They’ve looked at Guthrie and realised he’ll never sell for more than a million so would rather replace him with a cheaper option that might come good, there is absolutely nothing planned anymore with the team in mind, it is all about who might turn a profit. It still boils my pi$$ now as to why the fcuk Anita was signed for nearly 7M when we so desperate for a CB, it was purely because Casino manager Derek Llambias thought he could call Chelsea or Arsenal bluff and offload Tiote and Cabaye.

Comment #72I am not 100% convinced that Carr has as much power/influence as we have all been led to believe.
He seems to be the ideal person, an undoubted football person, to mention by the hierarchy to give decisions by Mr Tubbs and Penfold an element of footballing knowledge and correctness. As they both know nothing about football – what is on Penfolds CV – we haven’t a clue.
Carr is a good shield for Tubbs and Penfold.

That’s exactly right. We’re still desperate for that centre half! We signed one (a European class act no less) and flogged him because we were shoving him on the left to accommodate an ageing and woefully deteriorating Colocinni!
I despair when I consider the direction the club is going. I’ve made the call to take a step back from it. I will try and go to the protest next Sunday, but I’ve got interviews in London the next day and I’m not sure what time the bus is but I’ll see mate.

The thing with Carr is the club know he has some decent connections in the european market where they can get cheap players who could be sold for a profit.
I’m sure they take his opinion on players on board but ultimately sign who they believe is profitable, not best for the club.
It’s why we never sign older players, sometimes it benefits the club to have a few experienced players, even if just squad players, as they know how to get through the tough times and can offer the young lads advice….however they don’t make a profit so clearly the club don’t want them.

This is from The Chronic in January:
Lee Charnley this week said that the new man would have to work as part of a “triangle”, that had him and Carr as two points of a three-sided shape. “Graham (Carr) is very, very important to us and I think he has an excellent track record. He’s a big part of what we’re trying to do,” United’s managing director went on to say.

Again you are totally missing the point.
Carr could recommend any manager but if the Charnley and Ashley who control the money will not pay the manager the going rate or not pay his club to release the manager from his contract what can Carr do….please tell me.
Carr makes recommendations, the managers he recommended were decent managers, not top top managers but good ones the club could realistically attract if they paid the money.
It is not Carr’s fault that the club won’t cough up the money.

“Twice he had to be persuaded not to resign. Once it brought Mike Ashley from his Buckinghamshire home to Carr’s back garden to talk him out if it, he came so close to going.”
So why didn’t he resign for a third time? He’s 70 years old and obviously doesn’t need the money!
