Newcastle have been woeful this year and we have shown some poor form in the last five games, all of which we have lost – but we played well in patches tonight, although it still seems far too easy to score against us and Liverpool managed to get two goals, one in each half to win the game.
John Carver – still positive
This is what John Carver told Sky Sports after the game tonight:
“I thought it was good reaction after last weekend.” “We had energy and caused Liverpool some real problems and it was a huge decision that changed the game when Perez went down under Lovren’s challenge.”
“I’ve looked at it. At the time I thought it was stone-wall penalty and looking back at it, it was.” “We were tentative in the first 10 minutes but we grew into the game and started believing we could actually do something.”
“We had a little bit of pressure on their goal. We didn’t get the penalty and Ayoze Perez forced an outstanding save from the goalkeeper. We were right in the game.” We came here for three points and we’ve got none and that’s disappointing.”
“But I cannot fault the effort that we gave tonight.” “I did last weekend and rightly so but we’ve had a go tonight and it’s disappointing. Last weekend was hard to take but at least we’ve restored some pride.”
“I think he’s quite fortunate to get a yellow rather than a red if I’m being perfectly honest.” “The fact that he’s given a yellow and another it should be a one match suspension, but he’s already been sent off this season so it will be two.”
“Two’s better than three and that’s how we have to look at it.”
“We have six cup finals and we need to pick up some points by hook or by crook. That is why our fans are going to be important to us. I have enough belief in this group of lads and if we see anything near what I saw tonight there won’t be a problem.”
We definitely should have had a penalty and of course goals change games – and the referees never even have to explain why they didn’t give the penalty.
Next up is Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, and on the positive side of things, we at least will have Coloccini back and maybe Rolando Aarons too.
Here’s hoping.

I didn’t think Anita did well, got caught out a number of times. Far from the worst, but nothing more than an average display.
Janmaat for me was our best player, which is damning in itself as he is an attacking full back having to play centre half. The others you mention gave effort, but I wouldn’t stretch it as far to say they performed well.
Sad thing is, that sort of effort and application last week could have got us something against Sunderland.

Comment #43I thought Anita was ok last night, difficult game when up against liverpool’s attacking players for a lad out of position who doesn’t get many games. Not perfect but kept the ball better than most.
Obertan made a few decent runs but the lad has absolutely nor fight/drive in him at all, pathetic to call himself a professional.
As for Sissoko, the sooner he goes the better, but I doubt we’ll see many suiters for him in the summer, he’s been awful for months. Even at his best he plays in patches.
Thought Janmaat was poor last night, all over the pitch, often closing down too far forward. Good commitment but not what you need your CB to be doing, left great big holes…..but I can’t blame him, nobody else was showing much so can’t really have a pop when he was trying.

Comment #44It always looks far worse when the manager says in the post match interview that we should of had a penalty. Without acknowledging we did not score a goal at all. There is only one Referee and yet the major failure of 11 players goes unnoticed.

I will agree that Janmaat often came way out of position last night, but he is the only one who has the drive to match his talent. He wouldn’t need to step out of defence if some of those head of him were willing to put in the same effort.
If someone bid £5million for Sissoko I’d snap their hand off for it. He is a French version of Kieron Dyer, occasional decent games, but not interested and heartless the majority of the matches. If he honestly thinks he could get in Arsenal’s first team he has been on the same meds that made Fat Sam say he was good enough for Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Janmaat picked the team up, most of the meaningful attacks are started by him.
Sissoko doesn’t deserve to be a captain, I’m also glad he was sent off in the game that we already lost.
I think the team will do better without him, I hope Armstrong will start next game.

Depends wh is fit. Talk of De Jong being available, as well as Aarons. If that is correct I’d quite like to see a trio in midfield of Colback, Abeid and De Jong with Aarons, Arma and Perez/Cabella ahead of them. Wishful thinking most likely as it would require an attacking mindset, but at least most of that gives us the opportunity to start building for next season.

Comment #48If there is no age policy in our transfers, it will be a lot better.
We need experienced players.
If SDJ is fit, he will be better than Sissoko and he will be the captain.

Comment #49Abeid, Colback and anita are the three I would single out from this game.
Colback and abeid were two players that actually showed they knew how to control a ball.
Subbing abeid will go down as just as puzzling as any change Pardew made.
Perez was already isolated so we chose to weaken our midfield, take out a player that was winning the ball for us and then have 2 isolated players up top
Just because you have 2 forwards up top doesn’t mean you’re gonna be a bigger threat.
Moussa plays too much like an individual. The amount of times he ran when he had passes on and even worse ran into players or turned his back on the area of the field where there was space and players to play instead running into a dead end. I think his style of play harms us as much as helps us because he’s been put on a pedestal as the player to make things happen.
I thought anita also gave a event account against some tough opposition and was more composed than willo or raylor on the ball.
RAYLOR.?
We cannot continue to play him at rb. Granted he wasn’t getting any protection from obertan but he was also taking too many risks bombing forward and not offering much in attack. It wasn’t just his lack of pace that was exposing him. It was him not being in the right position to cover. I think ryan a decent lad but he should not be playing such a crucial position. I’d be giving him a place in midfield in moussa’s absence.
Why is our defence in general so narrow.

Completely agree which is why I said a few weeks back he shouldn’t be moved into cb. I don’t think he performs his defensive duties much better than any number of players would and he has such an impact playing wide that we need to keep him there.
What we loose in terms of creativity and attacking threat from the wing is not outweighed by what we gavin with him playing cb.
Although he does make Williamsons compete lack of composure on the ball glaringly obvious.

Carver says de Jong will be playing in the U21’s game tomorrow night, and he will have a word with Aarons to see if he is up for it, but neither will be available for Sunday against Spurs.
The U21’s game versus Derby has been moved to SJP because of de Jong’s involvement.

Comment #54Anyone else listen to Cundyman on Talksport last night saying a manager who was looking at the job after Pardew left was told by Ashley that he was only interested in Newcastle finishing between 8th and 17th. I have no reason to think this was not the truth as it was on live radio.

we have RB as CB, 2 midfields as FB. Everyone at the back except Willo is playing out of position.
I agree, Raylor should play at midfield because he doesn’t have the pace anymore. He was great at midfield in the game where he got injured again (I forgot against which team), but he is the only choice as RB at the moment or play Satka and shift Janmaat as RB.

Comment #57That was a proper shambles last night. How Carver can come out and say that was progress is utterly unacceptable! It beggar’s belief.
It is sad (and ominous) when our most attacking (and productive) player was a CB playing out of position in Janmaat. Anything good we did last night (and that was not much) came through him. Fine he was caught out of position a couple of times, but after all, he is not a CB.
Krul: When called upon did what he had to do. Cracking save from Leiva’s header. Not at fault for either goal. He would be wise to be on his way in the summer. A good GK stagnating.
Raylor: Jog on son. Great that he is over his injury problems, but that was a disgraceful performance. Poor positionally (Sterling had the run on him all evening), poor in the tackle, gave the ball away all night, and set-pieces (his specialty) were wasted.
Williamson: Not a PL footballer. How he even has a pro contract is beyond me! I myself was not a gifted centre half, bu at the least I was willing and able to challenge, both in the air and on the ground. The amount of times he was turned, or lost crucial aerial challenges! And lets not start on his distribution. A liability.
Anita: Not too bad performance. Lost out a couple of times to Ide (pacy bugger), but there are bigger concerns than him.
Colback: Worked hard, put a shift in, but needs support in the centre of the park
Abeid: Can make a tackle, but his passing and first touch make me nervous.
Sissoko: The definition of a frustrating footballer. Of the same ilk as Ameobi. Gets himself into promising positions, then either forgets to pass (or worse still forgets the ball). Didn’t want to be there last night. If he is looking for a move, he is not doing a good job of putting himself in the shop window.
Obertan: First touch as poor as Williamson. Gave the ball away countless times. When he had the chance to run at defenders, he chose to run into the corner and got crowded out. The cheek of him to shake his head when taken off. He should have been off at half-time.
Cabella: This guy, undoubtedly talented, is the last player we need right now. He seems determined to impress, but ends up scarifying possession for a meaningless flick or step-over. End product is non-existent.
Perez: Worked hard. Looked dangerous. We could not get him on the ball often enough, and in areas where he could hurt Liverpool.

Cheers for that, talk about p1ssing on my chips!! 😉
LGF,
Colo is back, I’d be tempted to play a kid alongside him. Willo was poor again last night and has shown so often he isn’t up to scratch at Prem level. Time to look forwards, rather than sticking with the tried and tested.
Magicbus,
Cundy is an utter moron. He talks utter dross 99% of the time. While what he says could be tee, I’d imagine it is total fantasy that any manager would have informed him of that.

It does not surprise me as it is the truth. However I doubt MA would have needed to be involved with the non job interviews. The owner has a right to state his own requirements but it is the responsibility of Lee Charnley and every employee of NUFC to make it a minimum level of requirement.

I definitely agree. Get young Streete in beside Colo. When Colo plays alongside Willo, you can see how nervous he is about playing it square. He ends up banging it long and giving possession away.

We can’t use Streete, firstly, he is injured, secondly he is on loan at Rangers and isn’t able to be recalled. Dummet may be back soon, but I’d give Satka or Sterry a go alongside Colo. More likely Sterry as he is the more physical of the two, which would be a requirement alongside Colo.

Comment #67Ex NUFC players and staff, I say again get off your fat comfortable arses and speak out. Whats the problem with that??
Other pundits with no affiliation to Newcastle are making noises, so lets hear it. The fans who are wavering, dithering and will continue to silently, meekly follow need encouragement. This campaign may be our biggest shot at getting Ashley’s attention, it may not come around again any time soon. Do we really want to carry on like this?

Comment #70Glad to see Colback had a better game in midfield but I have a similar issue with Janmaat. It maybe because those around him make him look good but I think he is an excellent cetral defender and could be his long term pposition. He reminds me of the Barcelona defenders, confident on the ball, engages with attackers and agile. The right back slot should be being used to introduce a player from the reserves be it a winger, midfielder, full back or centtral defender.

He has played right back and centre back throughout his time at the club, so I’m not sure he can be defined as one or the other at the moment.
Hibbit,
Gosforth now has an M&S?? I hope the butchers in the high street shopping centre is still going strong and isn’t affected by an M&S as well as Sainsbury’s. I regularly got great venison and rabbits from that place.
As for Dummet, initially he was meant to be out for the season, so when I heard JC say he was getting close I was sceptical, particularly with the timing of that announcement. If he reckons April, that means he would be better off not playing this season in my opinion.

Janmaat 6 assists, Colback 5 assists Sameobi 4 assists then Arma 3 assists. Nobody else has more than two this season. Cabella, Sissoko, Goofy, and almost every other attacking player should be hanging their heads in shame that those 4 (2 defensive, 1 fringe, 1 kid) are all ahead of them in assists for the season.
