Newcastle were first linked with Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum four years ago, when the attacking midfielder was only 20 and still at Feyenoord, but in 2013 he joined PSV Eindhoven and it seems he would like to play in football’s top leagues – including the most popular sports league in the world – the English Premier League.
Georginio Wijnaldum – would be excellent signing for Newcastle
Wijnaldum has given an exclusive interview to Sky Sports today, in which he says he’s talked to Tim Krul about life in England, and says that Tim has told him about all the good things about living in England and living in Newcastle especially.
This is some of what Georginio told Sky Sports:
“I am happy at PSV but I am a player with a lot of ambition.” “I want to play in a stronger league than the Eredivisie.”
“With my quality I feel I can bring a lot to a team that I will join. I want to show it in the big leagues; England, Italy, Spain, Germany and France.”
“I speak with Leroy Fer and Tim Krul about England a lot. Tim has been in England since he was 17. He only says good things about England and living in Newcastle.”
“The stadium is big with 50,000 people, the fans are great and life is great there.” “You have better players and teams in England, and for myself it is better to play in a better league against better players.”
The reports are that Wijnaldum is being linked with a possible move to Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle in the summer, and the Newcastle link is probably because Tim’s told him all about Newcastle and the fans and the great stadium on Tyneside.
But we cannot really compete with the likes of the Red Devils and the Gunners – well not unless Mike Ashley almost completely changes the way he runs Newcastle.
If the owner is willing to spend the money we are now making on the playing squad – we could be a top side very quickly – quicker than most fans think.
But there needs to be lots of changes in the way the club is run to be able to achieve that.
Maybe Georginio Wijnaldum is one of the top players John Carver has said we are after this summer ….. maybe?
While at PSV since the summer of 2011, Wijnaldum has played 148 games with 54 goals and 23 assists, and he would seem to be an excellent signing for the Magpies this summer – if we can get him.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.
Note: Jamie Macdonald is a final year student at the University of Hull completing a degree in Business, and he’s been an avid Newcastle fan all his life, and to help him with his dissertation here is a questionnaire you can fill out and it takes just a couple of minutes.
The survey is about consumer attitudes towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – and it only takes a minute or two to complete – thanks for your help.

Comment #3the only way we sign Wijnaldum is if Sports Direct are planning to open in Holland.
Think PSV will keep him for another year as they are going to lose a few in the summer. Depay, possibly Maher and i think some of their defence are loanees.

Comment #4Afternoon folks, hope you are all well. I’m sure none of us are surprised by the fact that the Chronicle have offered such a weak response to being called out to offer their position but alas there we are.
I am sure a a lot know that true-faith have been running some video blogs of fans explaining why they are supporting the boycott here’s a link to the second installment folks!

Comment #6I’m surprised anyone links any players to us anymore! I know that’s a quote from the player but he’s being linked to Arsenal & Man U and it is a long time since we were in direct competition with them for a player, especially a well known international.

Comment #17No but it’s got mittens sewn into the sleeves. Incredibly impractical in the summer months so I just use them to carry my sweeties 🙂
