While there are a number of good coaches available who Newcastle could bring in over the summer – coaches like Remi Garde, Thomas Tuchel and Christophe Galtier and even Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp of Borussia Dortmund who will resigning from the German club on July 1st – it’s looking more and more like Newcastle will take an easy and cheaper choice in Derby County’s Steve McClaren.
Steve is a friend of Chief Scout Graham Carr, and would fit in well with Graham and Lee Charnley – who are the triumvirate who run the club for owner Mike Ashley.
Steve McClaren – 1/20 odds on to get job
Gone are the days when Newcastle would go after a top coach to make the side into one of the best in England – and that’s not the goal of the current owner Mike Ashley, who wants to keep Newcastle in the Premier League so the club can act as a worldwide advertising board for his company Sports Direct.
That’s the little secret that has become obvious over the last few years, and certainly Sports Direct have done very well over the last eight years that Ashley has been the Newcastle owner.
That’s why the English Billionaire bought the club almost eight years ago and it certainly wasn’t to make us into a top side.
If Jurgen Klopp had become available say 10 years ago and we were in this same situation we would have been after the top German coach – but we have never even been linked with him.
And one of our head coach targets in January – Thomas Tuchel – is now very likely to get the Dortmund job.
Mike Ashley has had five English managers and Irishman Joe Kinnear as his Newcastle managers so far, and it seems he will appoint another Englishman – Steve McClaren, the former England manager in the summer.
On BetVictor Steve is 1/20 odds on to get the job with Carver nowhere to be seen – here are the top seven candidates for the job.
Steve McClaren 1/20
Frank de Boer 12/1
Remi Garde 12/1
Michael Laudrup 14/1
Rafa Benitez 25/1
David Moyes 33/1
Jurgen Klopp 33/1
If Steve turns us down for one reason or another – maybe we don’t even meet his ambitions – we could still see John Carver get the job.
The Geordie coach has made it clear that he will not rock the boat at the Tyneside club, and will support Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley whatever they may do at the club, in the name of making money.
That’s the kind of guy Mike Ashley is looking for – and that seems to be one of his top priorities – and Managing Director Lee Charnley has already said in January that the new head coach has to accept the way the club is being run.
It’s Steve McClaren’s job to turn down – is probably the best way to put it.

There’s not much doubt that Newcastle are becoming a rich club these days, because of the big money being paid out by the Premier League, and the real question is whether Newcastle can have a top team too.
That’s the only priority for Newcastle fans – it’s the only thing that matters.
Comments welcome.
Note: Jamie Macdonald is a final year student at the University of Hull completing a degree in Business, and he’s been an avid Newcastle fan all his life, and to help him with his dissertation here is a questionnaire you can fill out and it takes just a couple of minutes.
The survey is about consumer attitudes towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – and it only takes a minute or two to complete – thanks for your help.

Comment #81Posting after a long, long time.. as following this great club of ours just does not make any more sense these days..
But I just read about what Carver said about the captaincy issue. I mean ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND fella? What kind of coach/manager says something like that.. is he trying to split the dressing room up? Yes I share his sentiments but to say it out loud to the world.. DAMN!
Also, what can we international fans do regarding the boycott?

Most definitely. I was just worried that there’d be no platform so to speak in order to upload and view the pics. It’d be better if like scottoon mentioned – one of the local tabloids had a section where everyone could upload into one massive mosaic.
Maybe ask the AO lads if they could modify their website to allow for a special section so fans could do this (obviously they’d have to check them first as WOS like our resident one would most probably ruin it by uploading vile pictures) and with there nationwide publicity it’d definitely be seen.

It would be more apt to march from the Leazes and hang it from a lamppost outside the Gallowgate end. 🙂

Nice to see some in London understand the situation and wish us luck.
I hope the figures are close to what he suggests.

Comment #89Ed , more and more I think you are a total fool, IMO you were pro P45 as you never got involved in getting him out , pretty much the same as your doing with with charver, but all of your posts about Steve Mac all have a ring to them to suggest he is a poor choice.
you may be a NUFC fan , but I am 100% convinced that your not a football fan ,
from a coaching point of view whether it be as a no2 or HC he has won more than just about all the other coaches you have listed , he has Derby playing fantastic football in a very tough competitive league .
I think you are basing your views on his time as England manager , which is crazy ,

Comment #93If the protests continue after Sunday (which I believe is the AO aim) then get on ebay. I’m sure someone does a wonga cover-up logo (AshleyOut.com) for about £6-7 and then get it ironed on at a sports shop – a shite defect one lol.

Comment #94Protesters need to get hold off and wave JD Sports carrier bags….that’s the equivalent of garlic to a vampire !
Free advertising for Sports Directs nemesis and free advertising for their major competitor …worth a punt ? ( just have to buy a ping pong ball or cheapest item to get the carrier – unless they will give you one for free !
