John Carver has just announced his team for the home game today against Swansea, and Manu Riviere starts up front with Ayoze Perez in what looks like a 4-4-2 formation, and Jonas Gutierrez is in central midfield.
Newcastle (4-4-2): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Vurnon Anita; Ryan Taylor; Jonas Gutierrez, Jack Colback; Remy Cabella; Emmanuel Riviere, Ayoze Perez
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Mehdi Abeid, Yoan Gouffran, Sammy Ameobi, Gabriel Obertan, Siem de Jong, Adam Armstrong
Swansea (4-4-2): Lukasz Fabianski; Angel Rangel, Federico Fernandez, Ashley Williams (c), Jordi Amat; Jack Cork; Jonjo Shelvey, Gylfi Sigurdsson; Nathan Dyer; Jefferson Montero, Nelson Oliveira
Substitutes: Gerhard Tremmel, Kyle Bartley, Leon Britton, Ki Sung-Yueng, Matt Grimes, Jay Fulton, Marvin Emnes
Referee: Neil Swarbrick (Lancashire)
Siem de Jong is on the bench and that’s good news and that’s a fairly good team today, although we are a bit surprised that Mehdi Abeid didn’t make the starting eleven.
Jonas is where he should be – in central midfield with Jack Colback – so hopefully we’ll have some bite there today, and it’s good that John Carver has brought Jonas into the starting eleven after their fall-out before the Spurs game.
The Newcastle web-site is talking about a 4-1-2-1-2 formation – but hey – you can overdo this stuff – we’ll call it a modified 4-4-2.
The bench is quite strong too – except we have no defenders there apart from young Freddie Woodman of course, with Rob Elliot out for the season, but there are at least some options for Carver to use in the second half of this game.
This is some of what John Carver has said about the game:
“If you look at Swansea’s situation they’ve got one of two injuries now and they’ve had to reshuffle the team so we’ll take that as our advantage.”
“They’re a side that will try and keep the ball and so we’ll have to be patient at times, but I’ve got to come up with a winning formula and get the three points.” “I remember in the fixture last year they got a very late winner in the death of the game that killed us off a little bit.”
“We know what they’re about and we know their strengths and weaknesses but it’s about us now. We got a good draw earlier in the season and we’re looking to take that one step further this weekend.”
Newcastle really do need to break this terrible losing streak of six games in a row – so we hope the lads can do that today.
The poll has gone from 12% thinking we can win the game two days ago to 17% today – so there is a little bit of confidence about the game, though not too much.
It would be great if Siem can get on in the second half.

Comment #41How does Ryan Taylor get a game and Abied sits on bench is beyond me – Raylor has done absolutely nothing in the games he’s played
Afraid I’m going for a loss – nothing in Carvers set up , tactics or motivation tells me otherwise

Comment #48I see another thinly veiled attack by Ed to discredit the AShley out campaign. Yes it may be a sombre atmosphere but that’s what ashley has turned it into.
No singing section and do these bunch of players really give a rats whether the fans turn up or not. Judging by performances I would say not. Is that what you want more of ed?

Comment #49I can’t wait to see what happens when Ashley takes notice.
2 doormen and 3 security guards walking round inside SD on a retail estate is normal, isn’t it 😉
Tried BandB’s trick to get out the rain for ten, was asked to leave after I got outside which is a first, usually they say don’t come back when I’m outside.

the word attack wasn’t in AP’s vocabulary and I don’t think JC has a handle on it either.

Comment #58Notice that JC has said we will try and take advantage of swansea’s chronic injury list.
Like JC said about Spurs that the boycott hadn’t affected the players and wasn’t an excuse and 2 days later said it was!!!

Comment #63by the law of averages we’ll win today. 6 defeats in a row equalling ap’s record will be forgotten and the job’s jc’s. ridiculous for a club of our stature.
