You can never accuse John Carver of not talking a good game, and after last night’s astonishing statement that he thought he was in pole position to get the top job at Newcastle, he has expanded on that today – and he thinks he could be given the top job next week.
John Carver – could get the job permanently next week
This is what John Carver has said today:
“It’s the election next week,” “And it’s the important people that count, they will make their decision.” “They will take everything into consideration.”
“When you set off on the coaching ladder, you say to yourself ‘who do you want to be and where do you want to go?’.” “You set targets all the time, and I always said I want to be manager of this football club, because of what it means to me.”
“So when you get that opportunity, you have got to try to take it.” “By hook or by crook, I want this, and I want to make a go of it. I hear people say I might end up stir crazy, but I’m not bothered. I want to have a go.”
“But I think just being number two would be the easy way out, and I’m not prepared to do that – never done it in my life – and I’m not going to start doing it now.”
If it does happen and Ashley and Charnley decide next week who will be the head coach and John gets the job, it’s going to be hard for John not to blurt out he is the new head coach the next time he is interviewed.
That will hardly make Newcastle fans happy that Ashley and Charley appoint a coach who has the following record so far this year.
[table “33” not found /]Coaching (management) is all about results and inspiring playing to play at their very best, and John Carver has not shown any of that those abilities this year, and doesn’t deserve to be given the job.
With all due respect to John as a person – he’s just not good enough to be a successful head coach at Newcastle United – whatever he has to say about it.

Comment #43jimmysmith…you have a tendency to excuse people for their lack of quality….and therefore taking away their responsibility!
…to what end goal I might add?

He’s leaving John Carver to take a shredding from the media, the fans.. Hanging him out to dry just long enough for him to disconnect completely from everyone and everything. Long enough for him to develop a smouldering dislike for them all. Then the big man ushers him into his office, into the fold. We’re your friends john. They don’t like you but we do. End result – inhabited. Tentacles fully installed. Undying loyalty. Or maybe I just had too much cheese before bed last night?

Comment #47Well, if he is an opportunist, he’s a remarkably patient and considered one, bearing in mind his 15 years loyal service to the club, first as a player and then as a coach rising through the ranks, and trusted by Sir Bobby Robson so much so, that he made him his assistant, and notwithstanding that he comes from Cruddas Park.

Comment #49He may be ultimately be excused for a lack of quality, but certainly not by me. I can recognise there is a difference between Carver the manager though, and Carver the coach, but more to the point Carver the man. Calling him an opportunist is pretty insulting, and quite a stretch.

Comment #50If there’s one thing this disasterous run has ensured its that JC won’t get another opportunity like this. So he’s gonna make like a limpet and cling on no matter what. Who’s gonna employ a dud again with a record like this? 7 defeats in a row…which, who knows, might end up in double figures yet?

Comment #51Wether we sympathise with Carver the man or not…it’s vitally important he doesn’t get appointed head coach at the end of all this, in my view.

FYI, I get paid 51 pence for every post over ten words from Ed, one or two others get 49 pence. The only people that shop at SD on our blog are your two brothers Blackley and Brownlie and his girlfriend Jennifer from Benwell.

Comment #53like it or not he will be judged more by the last 4 games (or even 3 if we lose today) than the 7 defeats in a row.

Comment #56How about looking at it this way? Which other clubs of our ‘status’ would be even considering employing a coach with a 7+ losing record, with John Carver’s one dimensional, ham fisted approach to football tactics and media dealings? Only in NUFC.

Patience and loyalty are admirable traits, but in this case they are not achieving anything so all a bit pointless really. We need less romance and more realism now.

Comment #58Show some balls John. Take a chance, what have you got to lose? Janmaat, Colback or De Jong in as captain. A shake up, a boost to the squad. Freshen it up. DO SOMETHING.

Comment #59I see the current no 1 Ashley apologist TDSarf is advocating shipping out about six players in the summer and claiming we only need to buy FOUR to replace them, apparently because of a lack of EL football we only need a 22 man squad. Also despite uber apologist Beardo saying the youngsters arent ready Sarf reckons they all need to be in the first team.

Comment #60It wouldn’t affect us adversely. Colo is a nothing captain coasting out of the club. How can he motivate? No captain at all would be no loss at the moment, so why not?

Comment #64sing in the corner …it’s a very fitting description of honest Carver I think.
…the game today (and Sunderland’s result) will determent whether Carver will the job or not I think. Initially I think he was told the job soul be his…but of course I don’t think they ever though relegation was an option.

Comment #66Someone said it a few threads back and I completely agree.
Some people are liking this link with Jimez. Mcclaren would be a better choice and has achieved more in his career than Jemez.
Rayo are not a good side. They have overachieved. Their defence is a mess and they are prone to fall apart just like we do. Floodgates open when they conceded.
Fans always shout about attacking football but the reality is we could really do with someone that can drill our defence (and get rid of this Watson’s narrow system).
It’s been our archives for too long now.

Comment #67I fully understand what the word opportunist means Jesper, and when you use it you are attacking his character without reasonable foundation. I’d wager John Carver, has earnestly attempted do more for Newcastle Utd on each occasion he’s turned up for work than you’ll manage in a lifetime.

A bit contradictory their. You say Rayo aren’t a good team, yet agree that they’re over-achieving. Surely that would suggest he is a good manager?
Yes, McClaren has been more successful, but thats because he has more experience and he has been in the game longer. He has also had more failures, if you’re using those terms.
Paco in his short managerial career has got 3 teams promoted into a higher division and as you say he is now getting Rayo to over-achieve.
Sounds good to me. A risk yeah. But so is Carver.

Comment #71If Ashley had anything about him he would try and go all out to get Jurgen Klopp!! Is this is his money making asset do you not think it would be in his best interests to go for somebody like him!! I would love to think he would, otherwise we will constantly crash and burn!! Plus it show us fans he means business!
