BBC pundit Robbie Savage has been saying which clubs he thinks will stay up on the Premier League and he had some good news of sorts for Newcastle United – who he says will stay up – but only because we already have 35 points, and he thinks that will be enough – and we suppose he thinks we’ll not get one more point this season – and that’s an opinion shared by a number of those knowledgeable in the game.
It shows just how bad Newcastle have been this year, so it’s good news bad news from Savage.
Robbie Savage – pundit
This is what Robbie has said about Newcastle’s chances today:
“I think there are seven teams involved and, looking at the table, 35 points should be enough to stay up. That is good news for Newcastle because, despite their terrible form, they have that many already.”
“By my reckoning, a point would make absolutely certain of safety for the Magpies – but at the moment it is hard to know where that would come from.” “Newcastle’s top-scorer Papiss Cisse will return from suspension after this weekend’s game against fellow strugglers Leicester.”
“They have to hope the Senegal international can make a difference because I have seen nothing else recently to suggest the Magpies can save themselves.”
“John Carver’s side are in free fall after losing their last seven games, and to stay up they might have to rely on three of the six teams below them failing to catch them.”
But John Carver has said yesterday that Papiss Cisse still has problems with that knee of his, and he is certainly not 100% fit, and it remains to be seen if he can play for us again this season – but we certainly hope he can.
If Robbie is right then we could lose our last 11 games of the season and still stay up – and we bet John Carver at the end of May if that happens will be saying he deserves to get the top job at Newcastle because he saved Newcastle from relegation.
If we do lose our last four games Carver will have taken 9 points from 19 league games and also lost in the FA Cup at Leicester City – so theoretically he kept us up – and we all know that John says some strange things, which seem to come right out of right field at times.
Finally, Robbie Savage says that Sunderland will go down, and will not be able to put together another great escape for the second season running.
We shall see, but we aren’t convinced 35 points will be enough to stay up this season.

Comment #1He’s probably right, but the fact that we’re relying on teams being worse than us to stay up is… pathetic, really.

Comment #2I did think 35 points would be enough until those two hull wins.
Reckon 38 would now be the magic number to be certain.

Any team scoring less than 58 points in a season relies on teams being worse than them to stay up. If A is better than B, then B must be worse than A?
