We’ve just been amazed at what little Lee Charnley and others have done over these last three months to help save Newcastle – and in a nutshell – it’s been nothing.
In any crisis, which Newcastle have undoubtedly been in since late February, you always look to the top executives to come in and show some initiative and leadership at these times – and that’s one reason they get the big bucks – but that hasn’t happened at Newcastle this year.
Mike Ashley – will be at the game today
Whether Newcastle stay up or not today, owner Mike Ashley is almost certain to shake things up at the club – we hope Mike Ashley will shake things up at the club.
News last night accompanying the revelation that Mike Ashley would be at the game today, was that he is not happy and even furious with the precipitous decline of Newcastle United over the last three months.
And he must look at how those have performed in the key leadership levels over that time – and it’s not a pretty picture.
Ashley reminds us a lot of the Robber Barons of America in the late 1800s – people like Cornelius Vanderbilt (shipping and railroads), JP Morgan (finance), Andrew Carnegie (steel), John D Rockefeller (oil) and others like Henry Ford (automobiles) as another example – and his personality seems to match theirs:
- Competitive
- Single-minded
- Mentally tough
- Furious competitor
- Concentration on making money at any cost
- Ruthless
- Immune to criticism
We could go on, but those characteristics seem to have helped Mike Ashley build his fortune in the sports retail market.
We’d be surprised if he wasn’t furious with what’s happened, because the fans certainly are.
We expect to see his ruthless streak come out over the next six weeks or so, and we could see a shake up within the club.
And according to the news last night, Ashley will not appoint Steve McClaren as the new head coach, but will bring in a foreign coach.
But first things first, and we are hoping Newcastle are a Premier League side at 5:00 pm today – and if we aren’t it’s going to be too hard to bear.
But whatever happens today, things have to be shaken up to correct the many problems that have existed in the way the club has been run.
It’s been out of control this year.
Comments welcome.

Comment #161I see that twat Cisse is doubtful. He has hardly played the last 15 games and is single handedly responsible for the problems. He is our only striker and has not played at a crucial time of the season. OUT with Carver and Mashers.

Relegation wouldn’t be a bad thing if it means the end of Ashley. I have totally fallen out of love with the club, when I was 18 i travelled all the way to Newcastle from Australia just to watch a couple of games before returning home this was all on a terrible wage back at home. I never missed a game despite the games being early in the morning and would proudly wear my toon shirt anywhere. Now that that was 6 years ago I have only watched a couple of games this season maybe like 5 at at most and even fell asleep in front of one because the rubbish i was watch was escapable. The shirt hasn’t come out for over a year and isn’t coming out anytime soon. Relegation could be the fix to this torment we have experienced. It’s just damn scary and unnatural to want to be relegated.

You should be in the dugout today son.
You’re such an authority on everything, I’m sure you could do a better job than Carver.

In his lifetime Carnegie gave away well over 90% of his wealth for the public good. In death he willed away the rest. That, sir, IS INDEED a true philanthropist.
(Re the down-trodden workers, Homestead was I believe one of the few union-friendly iron and steel works in the US. Modern methods no longer required the skilled union members – who were a small minority of the labour force – and maintaining their pay scales for jobs no longer required would have been like maintaining highly paid pit deputies when you’ve switched to open cast mining – commercial suicide when competitors were running a non-union model.)

Comment #165Blackley, I agree completely with your sentiments about attacks on season ticket holders – it is wrong and should be stopped.
However, could you explain how you can pay to watch such mediocrity and NOT make Ashley a richer man?

How can the players or fans take Carver’s words seriously? Every game has been a must win cup final. Week after week the same old sh1te.
The fact is he is tactically inept. That’s not going to change today. So I can’t see us getting a result. Hull have everything to play for and Man Utd have nothing. That tells me one thing.
