The Chronicle is reporting today that Newcastle could have their head coach in position by the end of next week, and they report there are still basically four candidates on the short list – Steve McClaren, John Carver, Michael Laudrup and Remi Garde – in no particular order of priority.
Steve McClaren and John Carver – new duo in charge?
But it may not be good that Steve McClaren is still odds on favorite on SkyBet at 4/11 odds-on, and the report is that John Carver will likely go back to his role as the assistant manager.
So putting two and two together you could say that it’s very likely that Steve McClaren could be appointed as the new head coach – and that would not be good.
Apparently Charnley and Ashley have been in busy negotiations this week, and Charnley has been doing a lot of work since last Sunday.
Sunday afternoon was just a huge relief when we held onto our Premier League status and we even heard owner Mike Ashley’s voice for the first time in eight years – which was a real shock.
It was a strange highlight to our season when we beat West Ham 2-0 with a passionate performance – which was very unusual this year under John Carver – where the team too many times simply collapsed and showed no fight whatsoever.
And the way John Carver explained that was that it was the players who let the club down.
The caution around Newcastle this week has been caused by our near relegation on Sunday, and the fact that Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley know this appointment is crucial to Newcastle’s future over the next few seasons.
Newcastle just must do a lot better than we’ve done these last three seasons, when we have finished in the bottom six twice in the Premier League.
And that’s since we were 5th top under Alan Pardew in 2012, when everything was looking a lot rosier than things are today.
We hope we are wrong, but there seems to be a strong possibility that we’ll see a Steve McClaren John Carver duo at Newcastle announced late next week.
It just seems that could be what happens – and that would mean nothing much would change at Newcastle – and that would not be good.
A McClaren Carver duo would also be a very safe but also a very poor choice by Newcastle, and the club will have lost their huge opportunity to move the club forward in a big way this summer.
As we said, we hope we are wrong and if those four on the shortlist are accurate we’d take Laudrup or Garde – thanks very much.

Comment #83Mike once mooted the idea of sacking the groundsmen to save costs and getting in a flock of sheep to keep the grass down. But it sounds like he’s going for a horse and cart and taking orders for fertiliser.

Comment #90Spot on Lee Charnley @84. What kind of wage will they pay him. He’s not worth 40K a week let alone 80K a week. Mr. Glass Legs. Good for about 10 games a season max.

Comment #97We’ve had a fan punch a horse while I’ve been here. And I can tell you it wasn’t pretty. Now Mike says he’s going to put a bolt through a horse and attach it to a cart, I’ve got to believe that and I will believe that and accept that and get on with that because I love this football club no matter what happens.

Comment #100It proves world football is completely corrupt. Taking bribes is a way of life in many parts of the world sad to say. Come on Uefa, show some leadership. Pull out. Hopefully the FBI can directly link Blather to the bribe taking.

Comment #103We should have made the decision before the end of the season in who we want to lead us forward and he should be in now.
We should already be chasing the players we want and showing the ambition needed to get them to want to be part of this new Newcastle United that actually want to move forward and f-ing win something!!!
The longer we wait the more it makes me think why did Mike Ashley do that interview? He must think we are stupid and I for 1 ain’t having any of it until we see action.
Already weeks behind where I want us to be now and don’t see it changing soon!
Take your time to get it right but it’s been clear since Jan that we needed a new coach so where is the forward thinking and planning for the future!
Unbelievably amateurish way of running my club and it hurts ;(

Comment #115When Mike bolted the horse to the cart, I thought he’d done that on purpose – it looks like he did. He could see the horse and the bolt and he just went for it. Well I’m expecting to get first crack of the whip. But there has to be a response. I have to accept there’s a chance the horse won’t listen to me. I can’t give it the desire to go out and pull the cart. I’m the best golfer and the best cricketer and the best three day eventer but I can’t make the horse pull if it doesn’t want to. I don’t think bringing the horse in to punch it would achieve anything.
