There seems a certain excitement building around Newcastle that maybe Lee Charnley will finally make a bold decision at Newcastle – with the news yesterday and today that former Arsenal star Patrick Vieira will be interviewed tomorrow for the job – and if he impresses and Lee Charnley and Graham Carr think the three of them can work together in a triumvirate running the club, the job could be Vieira’s and Newcastle fans will be happy.
Charnley will no doubt get help from Mike Ashley, and yes we know he said it was Lee’s decision to make in his Sky Sports interview, but after almost getting the club relegated Ashley isn’t going to stand by and let Charnley appoint John Carver to that position – believe me.
Patrick Vieira – the next Newcastle head coach?
Newcastle fans will be happy at least according to our poll with 84% saying they would like to see Patrick Vieira as the new head coach at Newcastle.
Olivier Bernard, the former Newcastle left back under Sir Bobby Robson, knows all about French Football and he knows all about Patrick Vieira too, and Olivier has today talked to the Chronicle and gives a glowing report on the former French International:
“Bringing him in would help the likes of Coloccini, who you would get another year out of and he would do well because he knows he has to fight and do things right. Other players will have respect for somebody who has won the lot. Having a manager who has been there and done it helps.”
“For example when we were managed by Bobby Robson we knew he’d managed England and played at the top level. Every player respected that.” “Alan Pardew played the game too but maybe he lacked a bit of character.”
“John Carver was new to the job and the results didn’t show even though he didn’t have the best squad to work with and the team lacked identity.” “That’s what was so frightening for me under JC. It was awkward to watch.”
“It’s going to take more than one transfer window to make a Newcastle team who are ready to compete and win a cup.” “I believe they can but it will take the right manager and so far Pat is the best name I’ve heard for a long time.”
“He can bring some hope to Newcastle fans.” “He’s got enough to manage this club.” “The way we finished the season was the worst I have ever seen. I have been in England for 15 years and it was the worst season I’ve known.”
Vieira could bring the very best out of the players we already have, as we had mentioned earlier today – and as Olivier mentions above.
It would be much like Alan Pardew was able to do in season 2011-2012, when we finished 5th top, and maybe we can even have a good season coming up – after the players seemed fed up playing under John Carver this year.
It will be an important meeting with Patrick early this week, and we are hoping he will get the job, because he would be a head coach with great stature for Newcastle United, and we need somebody like him given where we are right now – the fans need a boost and the club needs a boost.
Newcastle may not have the cull we were expecting this summer, and we may not see too many players leave – because for one thing – we need a bigger squad next season.
If we are to bring six good players into the squad this summer then good – the players will have to fight it out and there will be good competition for places – but the wage bill will have to increase.
It’s a very important decision for Newcastle to make this week, and Lee Charnley needs to be a lot bolder than he’s been over the last year.
Appointing Patrick Vieira as the head coach at Newcastle would certainly be classed as a bold decision by Charnley.

Comment #81If Ashley takes a punt with Viera then I’m almost certain he will be allowed to bring in his own back room staff, relegating carver to the academy or reserve team in some kind of role. No manager in there right mind would take the job and agree to carver as there sidekick as he’s clearly part of the current problem. Fresh start, clean slate and looking forward to next season

Strikes me as excitement just because he was a good player once upon a time as a manager he is hugely unproven
I honestly thought there would be uproar mate but apparently not

Taking into account the rest of the reported candidates Vieira excites me tbh. The likes of McClarenet al, is not what we need imo. we need to see a definate change in how the club approaches the game

Comment #87Not sure why people think we have a small squad. Even if we did not sign anyone we would have 27 players to pick a squad from.
We lack quality not numbers

Comment #88Viera….really? When was the last time a really good player or outstanding player in the prem 5became a good manager?
Zola
Shearer
Vialli
Gullit
Di Canio
That’s just a few that failed big time in management. Di Matteo another failure was absolutely hated by Schalke fans and players. He changed the formation to 5 in defence and was accused of being to defensive. As for viera, he’s a cheap risk, we need an up coming manager but not a complete novice, think the board have looked at Swansea and thought why not look at Monk!!

In terms of quality our squad is tiny. Of those 27 how many are first team players? Thats why people rightly say we have a very small squad

Hmm not sure any of them excite me all that much, reckon Grade would of been a better bet but that looks out the window now FDB would of gotten my interest but again thats a no go
West Ham are, from what I have read, looking at pedigree managers where as we are looking at under 21s?

Your solution for our leaking defence is Chester and Richards? Chester isn’t even the best defender at relegated Hull.
Richards is a cheapish gamble that probably will pay off for midtable Premier League club but Richards are going to need time to get back to his former levels of performances. He’s played like 20 games in the last 4 seasons.

Without doubt there are far better and far more exciting and proven options out there but of those we have been linked with Garde was the only one who was realistic while being capable of taking us forward but thats not happening now, so of Vieira and McClaren, the two major links, I’d take Vieira all day long.
Shame we don’t even try for the likes of de Boer or Klopp

Most fans would be panicking at the thought of losing as many players as will leave us this summer, but we need a clearout and it seems that this is the summer to do it if you can take Ashley at his word

Comment #97Jazzy, yes, what would look to be progression is actually only partly recouping player losses.
Tds, the coincidence is there though nevertheless. Happened in other windows as well. Name drop some players, say that big money will be spent, and nothing is. Three windows of signing nobody when we needed strengthening, plus a capable manager.
————
They need extra bums on seats to make it look like there are no problems and everything is running smoothly to the outside onlookers. Just as they did by confiscating the Pinocchio banners, moving the away fans back away from the pitch out of sight of the cameras at the Southampton away match, and playing music to drown out dissenting voices at the end of the last home game.
All things done to neutralise people who are standing up against their agenda. Like a screaming person who has someone covering their mouth to limit the distress calls.
Talk is cheap.

As you know mate everything under Ashley is a huge gamble, thats why we’ve ended up where we are now, but maybe this gamble can pay off for us. If we are not going to go for the obvious managers like Klopp or de Boer then why not take that gamble on the like’s of Vieira as what do we have to lose?

I’m sorry but your Adams/Merson argument does not stack up, at all
Neither had any experience but neither had coached either
Vieira’s role at Citeh far exceeded simply managing the reserves
His role included player development, setting up and organising projects and programmes within the community and sourcing and securing commercial partners, each of these roles has been previously highlighted in the Cashley manifesto
Then there’s the contacts globally he would of established whilst backed by one of the worlds richest clubs, Citeh appointed him the role because they knew that Vieira was hugely respected within the football community, those relationships will carry over with him, he is at citeh what Zidane is at Madrid
Then there’s the impact he can have on our relatively young and heavily French centered squad
Experience brung us the likes of Fat Sam, Dagliesh, Souness and Pardew
Being bold and taking a new direction got us Keegan
Anybody we appoint will be a massive gamble
We’re not going to get a Klopp and experienced managers would be in the Pardew/McClaren mould as in if there experienced and good they will already be at a top club
Seriously lads n lasses we’ve spent years complaining about being unadventurous and stagnating now were complaining about the possibility of a bold new direction?
Experience will bring us a McClaren or Pullis how’s that ambitious?
Anyone thinking Vieira, a strong willed well respected football ambassador, will be simply a cheap option and a yes man pretty much deserved the deluded Geordies tag and needs to give their head a shake
So yeah given what his role at Citeh actually entails and coupled with the fact he’s an ambassador of the game with numerous contacts at all levels trough Europe, aye i reckon it will signal a huge change
You?
Oh and what qualifies experienced?
If we went for McClaren he’s not good enough, FDB he’s not managed in the league etc etc
It’s a shake up, a much needed one, not sure why the mass negativity

Comment #103JB we have another 9 players coming into the last year of their contracts and none of them have deserve an extension nor would we get much for them if we can sell them. It always needed a huge clear out this Summer. The truly stupid thing is the club let it get to this situation.

Comment #105The reality is that most proven managers aren’t willing to bow to Ashley’s demands. But an ambitious manager looking for their first big job would look at Newcastle as a club with huge potential. Whether or not a Viera can unlock that potential with the way Ashley has run the club thus far remains to be seen.

i think its the package you get with Vieira
he appears to pretty smart choosing where he does his badges because of the way they develop the coaches they train he seems to know the sort of manager he wants to be
i think given the the staff he wants and a decent no2 it would prob work
more than that he has seen how city are doing things on a global scale and would no doubt have ideas on how to take the club forward
