Newcastle have been linked with Leeds United right-back Sam Byram for over a year now, and the 21 year-old seems to be in demand this summer with Liverpool and Sunderland also interested in the youngster, who over the last three seasons has played 119 times for Leeds with 7 goals and 14 assists.
Sam Byram – Leeds United 21 year-old right back
The fee quoted has always been high for the young Englishman – it was said to be £8M last summer and is the same this year, with all three clubs unwilling to pay that amount for a player who is untested at the highest level.
Sam plays in the style of Real Madrid and former Tottenham winger Gareth Bale and is comfortable playing at full back or out on the wing.
The latest news today is that Sunderland are preparing a £5M bid for the youngster.
Newcastle are solid at left-back with both Haidara Massadio and Paul Dummett fighting for that position, and Paul can also play at right back as backup to Daryl Janmaat – so it remains to be seen if Newcastle will be looking to bring in a right-back this summer.
It wouldn’t seem to be a priority, but Newcastle also have to increase the size of their squad, as well as the quality- if we are to avoid a relegation fight next season.
This year saw the small squad decimated by both injury and suspensions, and at times there were only 15 first team players available for selection to interim head coach John Carver.
£5M would seem to be a reasonable price for the 6 ft tall Sam Byram, and he’s English and Newcastle will be trying to bring in more British players this summer.
What do you think?

Comment #4re Viera…it’s a no-brainer for me but unfortunately I also think it’s highly unlikely
Viera has been coached by the best coaches around the world, he knows how the best clubs in the world coach the kids and the main playing squad, he’s french so will definitely get the best from the french contingent in our squad, he is regarded as a mega god by most french players, he is an intelligent articulate guy, he’s a winner, a great player and brings with him a wealth of experience that can only better our club…only thing lacking is managerial experience but how much did Keegan have when he first came to newcastle?
All in all a very good candidate in my book but alas I think it’s wally’s job and they’re just putting stories out there to make us think they’re going for the best possible candidates but just couldn’t get them over the line so will settle for Wally and Carver

Mike’s change of heart is, as Ed has pointed out, remarkably similar to Ed’s April Fool spoof.
The most encouraging early bonus of Mike’s interview is that it has encouraged dozens of new posters, all of them filled with undiluted optimism and without a sceptical bone between them, to start posting on the blog in the same week.
Fantastic to see the leadership redoubling its efforts and investing properly to finally deal with the most persistent and serious problem facing this club.

Comment #6right lads …the race is on…in two more minutes the ever racy ED will put up another thread so make your thoughts very succinct and make your points quickly before we’re on the next thread about another player who won’t be coming here because we don’t yet have a manager anyway and would never come in a million years anyway

Comment #7Jail, do you think MA really gives a toss about how many people renew their season ticket. It’s peanut to the club if even 50% don’t renew.

Comment #8and as jail rightly points out it is season ticket renewal time and what better time to but out stories like “Viera favourite for head coach job” when they’re busy trying to sell season tickets.
we’re all mugs! ..me included…I did get a bit excited there til Jail rightly brought me down to earth again

Yes I do think they care a hell of a lot about ST sales, they are worth millions and more importantly they make it easier to give an impression that everything is rosy at the club with near full houses, if 10K didn’t renew it would become very apparent that all was not well which will have a serious knock on effect. Why do the club spend so much money on a spin doctor if they didn’t care about extracting the fans hard earned cash.

Sorry, as you’ve only been posting a short time I am unable to decipher from what your post really say and what you really mean.
For example if you said Mike Ashley was great for the club and left it at that, I wouldn’t know that what you really meant was that Mike Ashley was great for the club if he wiped out the extra debt he caused and invested enough money in the squad to have us challenging year after year for the top six and trying to win cup competitions.

Comment #15The connection with the announcement of Viera and season tickets is just yet another negative conspiracy theory.
If the club really wanted to push the boat out on season tickets surely they would have squashed all rumours that Carver was going to get the job and also that McClaren was now out of the running.
Viera would be an inspirational appointment, albeit a bit risky but then again Keegan had no previous whereas Sir Bobby had a suitcase full but neither achieved any glory but both their teams played entertaining football which is essentially what the Toon fans want.
Viera would have learnt a hell of a lot from Wenger and also working at Man City. He would certainly give a good kick up those Gallic bums at the club. He is a well respected individual and could take us to another higher level.

Comment #21Munster, I’m in some scheme started donkeys years ago and I only get charged £22 a month, I don’t go to many matches as I work Saturday so give it to kids that want to go . I’ll only cancel it if Carver is managing the club as £22 is peanuts.

Comment #22KK and SBR achieved no glory Slank? A bit uncharitable dont you think? I suppose they were typical northern spongers though eh?
What would you give for a KK or a SBR now? Oh wait, we don’t want to be attempting cups or getting into Europe do we?
And as for “Conspiracy Theory” you could try “previously observed behaviour pattern”.

Comment #23Mike needs STP to be full. It’s a requirement in the new TV deal. Sky has said they won’t be broadcasting games from half empty stadiums…
…this is the part I think alot of ST holders fail to grasp

Comment #24Is it too much to hope for an embargo on baseless transfer speculation until after Charnley/Carr get the finger out and appoint our new supremo? No doubt linking us with every player is great for season ticket sales but all media should do what they can to focus on the main job in hand – a Head Coach.

Comment #25As has been pointed out, ST sales are more important than simply the income they generate. I don’t subscribe to the theory that empty seats will automatically be filled by casual patrons buying on the cheap. Maybe once or twice, but people won’t regularly shell out discretionary income to watch a lacklustre team in an ever-diminishing atmosphere, even if it’s the Premier League. Ashley has based his business success on “the cheapest available, quality not important” – that doesn’t work with a football club.
