It’s a good measurement of the success of last summer’s transfer window when the top three in our annual Player of the Season poll were all brought in last summer, but the easy winner this year is Dutch International Daryl Janmaat.
Daryl Janmaat in action last Sunday
Daryl got a massive 53.1% of the vote which is the highest percentage since Seb Bassong won it back in 2009 with a massive 67.9% of the vote
Daryl is our second highest winner ever just in front of Habib Beye who won it in 2008 – our first year of polling for the award.
21 year-old Ayoze Perez comes in second at 18% and he has an excellent first season on Tyneside.
Ayoze is followed by local lad Jack Colback at 16% – and both players have not only been good this season but have been fairly consistent too.
And a mention for Jonas Gutierrez, who played only 11 games for Newcastle this year, but came in 4th in the voting with 6% of the vote.
Jonas has since been released by Newcastle after having probably his best game in his career last Sunday, when he was the top European player of the last weekend of the European football season.
Jonas was signed on at Newcastle in the summer of 2008 while Kevin Keegan was still the manager, and he has fought his way back from testicular cancer and it’s been like a Hollywood movie for the Argentine.
Jonas will forever live in the memories of Newcastle fans, for what he’s achieved these last two years – and his comeback has been a huge highlight of the season.
There’s still time to vote if you haven’t yet done so.
Who Was Newcastle's Player Of The Season?
- Janmaat (55%, 2,685 )
- Perez (19%, 926 )
- Colback (16%, 799 )
- Gutierrez (6%, 294 )
- Sissoko (3%, 164 )
Total Voters: 5,072
Here are the past winners with their percentage of the vote.
Games | Won | Draw | Lost | GF | GA | GD | Points | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
S. Bruce | 8 | 0 | 3 | 5 | 10 | 19 | -9 | 3 |

Comment #41best thing Ashley could do right now is give carver his contractual million quick and sack him leaving no issues to overcome with the new HC / managerial incumbent…but because he hasn’t methinks Wally will get the job because he’s happy for the work and happy to work with Carver

It’s how you quantify ‘top manager’.
I would suggest that is unlikely that a manager who has been used to taking teams into the Champions League would come to us, certainly not in his prime. It may also be true for the Europa League but there is always a possibility.
Would the managers whose Premiership clubs have qualified for European competitions jump ship and come to us, almost certainly not.
The best we can hope for is a once top English manager like McClaren or someone with experience of England but not the Premiership like Karanka or someone who has a good reputation as a player and wants his first crack at managing a Premiership club like Viera or someone from abroad with no experience of the UK and the Premership.

Comment #44Viera is in his first coaching role, coaching some of the best talent in the world. Most of who are already highly motivated.
Bringing him to NUFC and thinking he could make a team out of a bunch of rag tag unmotivated misfits is a stretch to say the least.
What he did as a player means nothing as a coach I could list multiple better players who’ve failed in coaching.
I’d rather the job went to Hasslebank or the lad from Watford or Garde if Newcastle was Arty enough for him lol.
I’d rather Clement who may not have been a great player but he’s not in his first job, I could understand if Viera was Wengers no2 with 5yrs coaching expirience but to me it looks like a leap of faith to far.

Comment #45I wouldn’t be too disappointed with Viera coming in, but I don’t know enough on his coaching – methods, ideologies, abilities, style etc to say I’d be really happy and see it as a positive.
I think people are focussing on the wrong things, experience can be useful, but if he has the ability on the training field, tactical knowledge, and motivation abilities alongside good man and character management skills then the experience is far less important.
It would be important to have a more experienced head above him on the board though if we were to go with an inexperienced head coach. Someone to give advice, and assistance if things aren’t working, or to offer support when things are going well. A person who knows how to restructure and overhaul a footballing set up and can assist the more inexperienced in this. Maybe even McClaren!

KK and plenty of other great coaches never had any experience, plus Viera is viewed as a possible next Man city boss after great work with their youth.
Viera has enormous playing experience, is a winner, would command instant respect and would be an inspired choice that you wouldn’t normally associate with NUFC.
Having a French coach has been a no brainer for so long now with all our French players.
This could be a hugely exciting opportunity for NUFC to finally do the right thing instead of going back begging a 3rd time for someone who has been sacked from 7 out of his last 8 jobs.
85% want Viera and 85% don’t want McLaren so we all know what Charmless will do and miss out on a really exciting prospect.

I agree. Viera as a modern day coach and with such an exemplary playing record would be a huge inspiration to the club.
I would also expect him to bring in a couple of assistants he could trust whilst Carver and Co were returned to the standard they are best qualified ….. academy work.

Comment #49Personally for me the appointment of a new manager/hc has absolutely no meaning whatsoever
We need a change of strategy first, the manager needs to have input into who comes in to the club

Does he want the best for NUFC?,talk is cheap!!!

I wouldn’t want Carver and co with the academy!! Imagine the damage they could do to a young’s career before it even starts. Let Carver and Stone continue with the bibs and cones duties, just with minimal player interaction.

Comment #51Firstly, for the Poll, has to be Perez. Without his goals this Club were sunk.
Secondly – KK / Terry Mac proved experience means nothing IF the right support is given.
Third – I repost this from another Blog. Just my own wonderings on the situation:-
I have to wonder, if there is any mileage to this, (and all media are repeating it, never mind the bookies odds) why Vieira and not Clement?
Ok, the Frenchman has a great top flight playing career behind him and undoubtedly would have the respect of any dressing room. The link with Wenger and Garde is also interesting in all of this (excellent support network) and KK proved with the right backing anything is possible by someone with that mentality and no prior managerial experience.
But Clement has far more experience of the same sort, gained at Chelsea (Academy and then 1st team), PSG and Real with Ancelotti and previously with Fulham, Blackburn and the Ireland U21’s. He has held the A class badge since ’99 also. We’ve all witnessed the achievements of a certain other ex PE teacher who learned under a great manager (Mourinho / SBR) so a playing career isn’t always a measure of future success anymore than an experienced manager. Yet Derby (and reportedly the Mackem’s) apparently want him as their replacement for the Brolly.
It has to be safe to assume Carr had a big input on Pardew coming here and for Carver to take the reins afterwards. His stamp most definitely appears to be with that type (i.e.McClaren) which is not surprising given his own background / cv. Ashley however, when he first arrived, held up Arsenal as the Club model he supposedly wanted to recreate (yes, that was subsequently downgraded to Villa’s!).
So, is this an Ashley direction (perhaps reminiscent of KK and some regret over that?) or perhaps just more deflection in order to make the McClaren choice appear less obvious and a done deal?
Personally speaking, I think I’d rather have a new broom here and one that captures the imagination and excitement rather than another safe pair of hands which will give more mid table mediocrity.
Just wondering out loud on this story really.

Comment #52I can’t decide if Viera would be ideal or not.
The similarities with KK are glaringly obvious however KK had an attachment with the area previously
Viera will want money..no doubt about it.
He does have cracking players to work with where he already is…We don’t yet have anywhere near their quality. …
He would be a great motivator. …
He won’t be a yes man
He wouldn’t work with Carver ? Does he have his own backroom staff ?
Would play ‘football’.
Could he handle the pressure from fans, would he just walk….
Can’t decide !

The French we have ATM are shite, if signing Viera is good for Sissoko Gouffran Obertan Rivierre etc then it’s even more reason not to get him. They should be sold on, not the main reason to give a certain HC the job.
I think the polls just show how fickle fans are, they don’t want Mclaren because he’s seen as old school but they want Viera because of his name and hoping he’ll do a KK. No only fickle but naive to.

Comment #57Having read through the last few threads the one thing that stands out is how divided the fans are again.
The club that was Newcastle United have won again.
Season ticket sales will rise, fan unity is dissolving, and all because of a few leaked stories that may or may not be true.
Fans were coming together at the end of last season, and uniting against the regime that has destroyed our club, however since the final whistle of the last game of the season, and a few well timed stories here we are back to square one.
Well done Bishop, the club have yet again achieved their aim.
The fans are no longer making plans to campaign against the regime if nothing changes, there seems to be silence from AO, whatever happened to the demonstrations that were to take place during the close season?
Anyway back to the arguing and bickering over who will and will not be coming to the club!

I think most our just cautiously optimistic. Everyone would like to see change and good but some are and have a good right to be flat out against being optimistic because of the last 8 years. They feel they see straight through it and I can understand that totally, im there myself and have been for a while.
But we do have news in Viera so it shall be discussed in proper NUFC Blog fashion. It’s always 2 sides on here and that is why it brings me back time and time again so I can read peoples thoughts.
I wouldn’t worry too much because if Ashley dosn’t really push this squad on he will have a full season of protests starting from the first game of the season. Im sure AO are just waiting also thinking the same.
For now though Im hoping for good and a change of fortunes amd running of the club. It’s going to be a long summer.

Wrong I think. Most people are not lifted, excited or inspired by mclaren. Everyone in football is a risk but Viera has the cache of being up and coming, modern, technically progressive and is a smart guy.
Above all Viera would get a lot of us excited in a way a McLaren or other average journeyman Brit managers just couldn’t, Howe and Clement excepted.
It’s an inspired left field choice that you just wouldn’t imagine NUFC being capable of doing and sadly probably won’t.
Viera would probably attract the better French players too, not the Gouffrans, Obertans etc.

Comment #62On Viera, from a Nigerian website not long after young Nigerian prospect Kelechi Iheanacho joined Cities youths.
“My coaching style is a combination from my experience of working with Arsene Wenger, Fabio Capello and Jose Mourinho,’ he said.
‘There is a little bit of all of them, plus my own experience to deliver my message. The relationship with the players is so important. I want to trust them but they must trust me, too. I like it because I want to be close with them.
In February he added another stellar manager to his list of influences when he spent time at Bayern Munich with Pep Guardiola and his backroom staff.
City’s academy director Mark Allen described how he likes his sides to play:
‘ We play out from the back, through the thirds, into midfield and then a possession-based game but with fast, attacking play. We want to keep the ball, have full-backs bombing on and work on a very fast recovery. Press, press, press and play again.’
City’s teenagers are in awe of the man, having grown up watching him torment the Premier League for a decade at Arsenal and City and across Europe.
One of their brightest prospects on loan at Lille, Rony Lopes, told Sportsmail in an interview: ’It was like a dream just to meet someone like Vieira. For him to be the coach, it was the best thing in the world. From the first day, he was always very friendly, talking to me a lot, trying to pass on his knowledge and make me grow up as a player and a person. That was he wanted. He is very important to me. He keeps in touch with me, asking how I am.’
After a poor start to his time in charge of City’s young players they have made it to the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals for two successive seasons, enhancing Vieira’s reputation.
WhenVieira joined City in a coaching capacity in June 2013 his aim was to see how he progressed in ‘the next few years,’ suggesting he is coming to a decision making juncture in his career. He chose the Welsh FA and Roberts, who works alongside his deputy Carl Darlington, to complete his badges because the pair are known for developing individual coaches through their personality.

I think you worry too much.
Perhaps Ashley won’t be able to look himself in the mirror until he has publicly proved himself to have not meant a single syllable of that humiliating u-turn his PR people forced him to spout to get himself out of an awkward corner.
It was perfectly pitched. Low.
Like any truce, you have to respond to it in good faith. Rejecting it out of hand as Ashley.Out did gives us no fall-back position.
If it is insincere it will become clear soon enough. This is a rich and powerful man.
Of course he was going to bounce back.

Thank you for your excellent reply.
The thing is though, fans are now back to expecting jam tomorrow, like you I see through all the BS coming out of the club, whilst we are now in a position of strength financially, and have the clout to be competitive on the field, how is that going to be achieved?
I’m sick of all the lies from the club, and will never trust them again. The remit for a head coach has only one design, and that is to limit the candidates willing to follow such a remit, who would want a job where you don’t know who your playing staff will be from one season to the next?
My biggest fear is that PR spin, and the timely release of certain stories are yet again dividing the fans. I know there are always two sides on the blog, and there will always be disagreements, and I hope you are right about the protests should the club fail again to deliver.
Maybe it’s the silence from the black hole that was SJP getting to me, I just don’t want to see the good work and first steps from last season be undone.

Comment #71I’d definitely welcome Vieira to the club, sure its a risk but he’s always come across as a class act, is well respected and to play attractive football.
If he gets appointed, can he have a word with Richards and Milner, both would add quality and experience to our squad. Wages could be an issue but in Milners case I think regular football is his priority.

Comment #72@ Toon – makes no odds what happens at RFC any longer. Ashley is only a minority shareholder, with the majority firmly against him now and very unlikely to sell their stakes to him if promoted.
@ Firebug – I agree with you. I hate Ashley with a vengeance. Fans are indeed fickle and divided. But the simple, if uncomfortable truth remains, that if Ashley somehow makes a change and turns this around, the majority would forget all about the previous 8 years. We all know it.
All I know and believe is that his involvement and appointments have failed spectacularly – every single one of them from Boardroom to pitch side.
If no meaningful change happens in the next few weeks then we can be assured it’s never going to. History suggests nothing different will happen – or maybe he really did have a Eureka moment last Sunday?
McClaren would not be the dawn of a new age – I believe most of us agree on that.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather we have an experienced manager like Klopp but that’s obviously a dream, no chance.
But like you say somebody like karanka I would prefer too, has some experience of managing.
I understand the point about an experienced playing career not meaning you’d be a good manager but it often helps (obviously some very good exceptions). It was more along the lines that viera has played under many top coaches so is bound (hopefully) to have picked up a lot from working with them.
Like you say, I’d rather a good experienced positive coach but would rather have veira than some premier league dinosaur we usually get linked with.

Ashley is indeed a “rich and powerful man” and his PR people could not, therefore, force anything on him. His decision to make a statement of ambition was his own, and since it gave a hostage to fortune, it would have been a remarkably stupid statement to make unless it was true.
On Viera, I voted “Yes” in the context of Ed’s post, where the alternative was business-as-usual. But I agree with Cyprus and others that we’d have been safer with a proven head coach (no Garde now? shame…) However, if the received opinion is correct – that Man City were likel prepared to replace Pellegrini with Viera – then NUFC should not be too big a challenge for him.
