Fans Think Steve McClaren A Step Up From Alan Pardew

9:18 pm, Friday, June 5th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 42 Comments

We must say that when we heard that Steve McClaren would get the head coach job at Newcastle, we didn’t think Steve was much better than Alan Pardew at all – and may not be as good as Alan Pardew was at Newcastle, even though Pardew was in no way a big favorite with the Newcastle fans.

Steve McClaren – new head coach at Newcastle

But in our poll we put out today, the majority of fans think Steve’s a better coach than Alan Pardew, and around three fans in five think Steve McClaren is a better coach than Pardew.

Is Steve McClaren a Better Coach Than Alan Pardew?

Loading ... Loading ...

While we are disappointed we didn’t bring in a better coach with a better record than McClaren, Steve still needs to be given support,  and we hope he can shock us and be a really good coach on Tyneside.

One thing that’s encouraging is that his former players like Michael Owen and Jermain Defoe cannot say enough good things about him and his coaching.

Michael Owen has let it be known to anybody who will listen that he’s right up with there with the  best coaches he’s ever worked with.

And one thing we are clear about is Steve is a gentleman, and he has handled some very difficult periods of his management career with complete class and strong character.

As we’ve said before, all we want to see is a good Newcastle United side that can get us back fighting for a top six position in the Premier League – and yes – maybe even winning a cup or at least having a good run in the cup competitions.

The fans all over the world who follow Newcastle United deserve that.

And we are still hoping next season can be a (very) good season for us.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Aye Jail it is a bit like being asked if you want your left leg or right leg broken

  • 5 BigB75 // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:25 PM

I have a hard time believen that Watford can get a decent manager and we can’t. What the bleep!

  • 6 p // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:26 PM

Poll should have been: “is he as bad as Pardew?”

  • 7 Graeme // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:27 PM

Schteve is simply another Ashley Puppet until such time as they prove otherwise. He has been brought in to toe the party line, just as Pardew was. We have NO Head Coach Signed so his input into the recruitment of players is non existant.
Maybe next week they will announce his appointment – How he is supposed to evaluate a squad thats off on their holidays should be interesting to say the least – No wonder they kept Carver, he knows them inside out!!!
I have severe doubts about the indicated changes, the alluded too ambition – When they have brought in some good quality players to cover the obvious weaknesses, maybe we will be suprised, but I’m not holding my breath in anticipation!!!

  • 8 Our Toon // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:28 PM

I surprised the poll results are as close as they are, in all honesty what has pardew actually achieved in his management career apart from relegation?

  • 9 Belfast // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:28 PM

McLaren must shave of that little triangle of hair at the front of his head.
    It’s annoying me already.

ah shite, I was looing forward to that game but couldn’t find it ended up watching Scotland struggle to beat Qatar

  • 18 Moonraker15 // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:43 PM

There’s nothing wrong with McClaren he’s probably a very good coach. The issue is that I think we know he fits the old model and won’t rock the boat or make the club be more ambitious; and they know that. The worry is, if we underachieve again he won’t be sacked cos the don’t have the ambition.

All PL clubs have loads of money now and it’s depressing that we are run by these no hopers.

Ashley has got billions as we know and could easily fund the club without the money that comes from Sky but tried to make even more money! Shame!

I wonder has he considered the kudos of having his club in the CL and the advertising benefits for SD if we qualified rather than float around in no man’s land.

We don’t even get much publicity on Sky any more! We are so boring !!!

  • 19 BigB75 // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:43 PM

Belfast- that’s where he hides his football knowledge.

  • 20 Our Toon // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:46 PM

Even more surprising when you consider he’s won nothing as a manager and his biggest claim to fame is finish 5th or actually was it:

Playing Santon as a DM or
    Dummett as a RB or
    Cisse as a winger or
    Tevez as a winger or
Preferring Mullins and Reo Coker over Mascherano or
3 sets of fans from 3 different clubs protesting his reign

I could be here a while if I went on

  • 21 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:48 PM

    well said Our Toon

  • 22 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:50 PM

No doubt Pardew’s novelty will wear off at Palace. they’ll soon be struggling

  • 23 BigB75 // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:50 PM

All kidding aside as long as the team plays good football and shows heart. Which was not the case. I think people will be ok after the first few games. But if it’s same old same, wally will be in for a world of hurt!

  • 24 jon.c // Jun 5, 2015 at 9:54 PM

We have Mac don’t slag him yet; give the man a chance over a few games

  • 25 Pop n Wyn // Jun 5, 2015 at 10:00 PM

The the Derby fans are saying they did not have a plan b well KK didn’t either, SM is the easy choice for MA we all know that, he does play a good brand of footie for sure, and beggers can’t b choosers can they.

  • 26 Belfast // Jun 5, 2015 at 10:07 PM

I don’t think he’s that bad myself. If he gets backed in the transfer window he could do a decent job.

Will he get backed in the transfer window though ? Probably not.

  • 27 Thump // Jun 5, 2015 at 10:12 PM

He could be good for us, but it’s been shown time and time again that anytime something good happens at Newcastle, we won’t capitalise on it. See: Europa. We had a realy opportunity to strengthen and try and finish top 10 again, instead we brought in Anita. Only Anita.

  • 28 Belfast // Jun 5, 2015 at 10:14 PM

I’d definitely better if Carver and co get the boot like.

He’s seriously handicapping himself keeping them lot around.

  • 29 Belfast // Jun 5, 2015 at 10:14 PM

    Feel better*

  • 30 Shaker Shakrah // Jun 5, 2015 at 10:16 PM

    Excuse me !!!!
I never voted in this stupid poll !!

  • 31 Sazzer // Jun 5, 2015 at 10:31 PM

People overplaying McClaren winning a cup and a title in Netherlands.

Pardew could have won F.A cup but lost on penalties.

McClaren could have been out on penalties against Everton the year he won that league cup title, and when he won dutch title Ajax scored 106 goals and conceded 20 goals and Twente scored 63 goals and conceded 23 goals. He won by 1 point. And Martin Jol was manager of Ajax.

In the league cup final it was Bolton and Big Sam on the otherside.

Considering 50% reputation is built his achievements at Boro. At least some people would remember the good old days and want him back ahead of Karanka. However, not a single one would replace Karanka with McClaren according to my poll on twitter so far.

  • 32 Sazzer // Jun 5, 2015 at 10:43 PM

McClaren might not be better manager but if keeps being more lucky than Pardew then I guess he’s upgrade.

  • 33 Sav // Jun 5, 2015 at 10:55 PM

I’d feel more encouraged if they bring Clark in as his understudy instead of Carver.

  • 34 banjax // Jun 5, 2015 at 11:01 PM

What can anybody say ? McClaren, up to now hasn’t been revealed as Newcastle Manager and as usual we are being treated by Charnley and Co as mushrooms, whilst at the same time the press are having a field day making up any stories that will sell their newspapers. So what’s changed. For Mike Ashley to keep his world he has to show us he is ambitious and is going to put money into the club at long last. But we have diddly squat at the moment and all the while, free transfers like Tom Cleverly are being snapped up by competitors so we are still missing out. We are going to need more than 6 new players in my view and that kind of recruitment takes a while. So whether it is all waiting to kick off with McClaren or whoever, Ashley’s interview promised many things especially money and if that’s the case we are going to be building a new team and that means a spend in the region of £80 to £100 m to bring that many quality players to the club – and that my fine friends is where we will find out if we are being led up the garden path by Big Mike. As the saying goes – bugger who the manager is – show us the money Mike !

  • 35 Our Toon // Jun 5, 2015 at 11:16 PM

That’s utter tripe and you know it, I’m not keen on Scteve being manager but to blast his title winning record in the dutch like is just nonsense. He won the league over 38 games, he won the league with Twente not one of the giants like Ajax or PSV…wheb was the last time anyone other than them 2 win the league prior to Mc winning it? How often has that been done?

I don’t like the appointment but please stick to facts and pets not distort them….Btw I think Jo is a decent manager, better than anyone we’ve had for the last 10 years!!

  • 36 spiceboy6 // Jun 5, 2015 at 11:21 PM

As a Palace fan I can’t help but laugh at you boys thinking Steve McClaren is a step up from Pardew. Over the summer it will be like rats leaving a sinking ship with your best players Sissoko & Janmaat (can’t think of anymore good players you have) leaving with average players coming in. Your chairman won’t open the purse strings and i will wager we will finish at least 3 places above you or more. I do actually like the toon and can’t stand Sunderland so i hope i’m wrong but come on lay off our Palace cult hero he has done a sterling job to date. Ps Pardew is the worst midfielder i have ever had the misfortune to watch at Palace but credit where credit is due a good manager (so far) who plays attacking football not like the boredom WBA have to suffer week in week out under Pullis. I hope McClaren is not what Warnock was to us but i fear you will have a new manager come January. Good luck the TOON

  • 37 spiceboy6 // Jun 5, 2015 at 11:22 PM

PS Even if you hate McClaren just remember the interview he did when he tried to speak in a Dutch accent comedy gold.

  • 38 sickandtired // Jun 6, 2015 at 1:14 AM

@Spiceboy – good luck to you. It’s not sour grapes to suggest you’ll need it. Pardew’s career is filled with streaks and joining you in January and 6 new players was an undoubted lift.
Let’s see how he does when he has a whole season with the lads and his own stamp is put on the team.
    I’ll put a sportsman bet here that you’ll finish 13 – 16th.
As for McClaren, it’s been a disaster 6 months in the making.

  • 39 sickandtired // Jun 6, 2015 at 1:21 AM

@Belfast – why do you keep suggesting scenarios which the Club have told us are not going to happen?
McClaren or anyone else will not be backed in the transfer windows as they have the least say in it all. Carr picks the targets first and foremost and then they need to be the right price and wages etc.
The bloke in the hot seat can’t choose his own backroom staff. If he could there would likely be a far bigger list of candidates.
That said, with three approaches for McClaren since January – I find it hard to believe anyone else was truly in the race anyway.
    Another recipe for disaster.

  • 40 sickandtired // Jun 6, 2015 at 1:27 AM

@Banjax – trouble is, mate, Ashley didn’t promise to spend. He said he’ll continue to invest.
He hasn’t spent another penny of his own money since we came back up and 18 million of what he did spend was simply added to his ‘loans’.
Plainly, his idea of investment is allowing the club to use the money it generates and that quite often comes form selling players. He’s still 25 million up on player sales since he arrived.

  • 41 mike // Jun 6, 2015 at 6:37 AM

seriously I have never known such a moaning whinging complaining set of fans ever. get behind your manager and your team. you might start winning then. if not just shut the “””” up.

  • 42 leonado_keng // Jun 6, 2015 at 7:04 AM

This season is very important to Newcastle obviously. If Mike appoint wrong manager who have to take care team including push team for more succesful, it will turn out to be many pressures back to him as boomerang forces. Mike, you give some promise words to fans before last game so you must display your intensions otherwise they will protest you harder than you have ever got. To beginning with your attentions from appointed manager who they wants according to votes at first and followed by new top players from many moneys you get
