It’s a good question as to which players will be leaving the club this summer, since we need a bigger squad than we had last season, if only to be able to get past all the injuries we seem to pick up every season.
And since John Carver kept saying there were players not good enough for Newcastle and they will be leaving the club this summer, we assume a number of them will be on their way.
Mehdi Abeid to leave this summer?
The Sun today have identified three players they think will leave Newcastle – Mehdi Abeid, Gabriel Obertan and Yoan Gouffran – and since they still have contracts at Newcastle, they will be put on the transfer list.
After 22 year-old Mehdi Abeid, who is of Algerian descent but born in France (that’s why I’m saying he’s French in this article), had done so well in Greece last year while on loan.
We were hoping he would come through, but Carver hardly played him this year, and it’s a good bet that Panathinaikos will be back in for him this summer.
That’s where he had an excellent loan spell and hit 10 goals in 38 appearances for the Greek side.
Gabby Obertan showed his best form of the season until he was injured against Liverpool, but it looks like the former Manchester United winger will be moved on this summer.
And another Frenchman, Yoan Gouffran, has been disappointing thee last two seasons, and while he works hard he hasn’t been the goal threat we had hoped he would be.
Not many players played well for John Carver this year – most players didn’t show anywhere near their best form for the coach who lacked man-management skills – and just couldn’t get the players to play for him.
So we are hoping Steve McClaren will be able to take a look at all the players in pre-season, before deciding who should leave – Steve shouldn’t rely on what John Carver tells him about the players.
After all McClaren may be able to get some of those fringe players playing at or near their best,
And we must retain a bigger squad for next season, otherwise we could soon be down to the bare bones again because of injuries, as we were this year.
Comments welcome.

Comment #81Really doubt Abeid will be sold though. He was deployed as a holding midfielder for us & performed well, bar a few mistakes but that is expected for someone still learning in Premier League (his first ‘proper’ season).
Considering the majority of our matches have been played using 4-2-3-1, which requires 2 holding midfielders, the only other options are now Colback & Anita. If we sell, there is no cover or we will have to buy; the latter being unlikely so I assume he will stay.
However, as unpredictable as the hierarchy are, who is to say they will sell him & not buy a replacement? They won’t find a Colback type player on a free. As for Anita, the only reward for us finishing 5th was his sole signing, he does not merit a place as even a squad player in my view.

I think you have got it all wrong about Pardew, and still so many have him on this false pedestal, and wish to point the finger of blame higher.
Alan Pardew brought a lot of his own problems to the party, these problems can only be blamed on those above him for 1 reason, for hiring him hi the first place,
Ashley may have set out some parameters, like not go for a cup, stay out of Europe and things like this, but Ashley can not be blamed for the style of football P45 played, nor can he be blamed for the team selections.
p45 was a huge mistake, his history proves it

Comment #83TFL…My beef isn’t with McLaren. He will get his chance (if appointed).
However, from where we sit now, do I see any real change? No.
I do remain open minded and can change my views as things change.
I’m just not sure on what basis people expect others to be optimistic? If I’ve missed something I’d love for it to be pointed out, if it’s blind optimism, fair enough, there’s nothign wrong with that, but let’s call it what it is and allow people to question it.

Comment #84I can’t be optimistic about Mclaren due to Carver, if he got to choose he own staff I’d feel a bit more comfortable with it.
He just looks another patsy.
All I can see happening is another NUFC car crash.

Comment #85The argument to be positive isn’t that Ashley has miraculously done a massive u turn and decided to run things differently after eight years of ridiculous decision making and selfish greed . That is his character and he’s not likely to do an eboneezer .
The fact that Graham Carr has a huge influence at the club and is likely to be around for a while means that the HC needs to have a good working relationship with him for there to be any harmony behind the scenes.
My thoughts and hopes are that Carr and Mc Claren won’t clash and can maybe work together to improve things on the pitch. They are supposedly friends so there is every chance it may happen.

Comment #87Prodigy…It’s another of my club gripes. People laugh at the blogs mini accountants etc, but the only reason people showed any slight interest as it’s been used as justification for the piss poor state of the club.
I really think people struggle with the idea of effect and cause at times.
I for one would love to go back to being a typical fan. As things stand, I just don’t see how it’s possible. I’d need to remove a large section of my brain 🙂

Comment #88Shock as it is revealed that Mr Tubbs, who has always got a keen eye for a profit, plans to make even more money upon the appointment of McLaren.
It is also believed a few on here have also invested.

For me, I couldn’t careless about history. All managers get sacked in the world of football, they all take on challenges, some harder than others. We have no right to a sir alex or wenger who have been afforded the faith to continue over alot of years.
You know me by now, and you will know I think the board has cost us alot more than a manager ever could this past 8 years.
I guess we will see, if Ashley gives us a squad to compete all year round with McClaren and he does well, the same could of been with Pardew or there abouts.
I only want the club to succeed. To do that you need a squad capable first and foremost and that has been poor during Ashley’s reign. Any manager who comes in is essentially playing Charnley and Carr’s first 11 and not getting what he feels would progress the club. Pretty difficult job under the circumstances.
Taking away the top players also and not replacing them, he should of left years ago but he agreed to the job in hand. The first decent opportunity he got though he was away. Can’t blame him.
If McClaren isn’t backed how long before you think he will walk? Surely he has asked for assurances. Atleast I hope so.

Comment #94Betty…Thank you. Some method in the madness 🙂
My worry with that is that it plays with the jobs for the mates idea that goes around.
It could work out that they work well together, as they’re friends, it could also mean they wont challenge each others opinions.
Who knows? That hasn’t been tested yet. I will for now resist the temptation of bringing Ashley in to this topic 🙂
Right, back to work for me. Catch you all later.

Comment #96I’m not surprised Austin wants to stay in the premier league, English players don’t tend to play abroad (obviously a few exceptions) & he’ll want to compete in a league that will get him in the England squad.
Is the £95m debt all owed to Ashley?

Comment #99From The Guardian:
There are two ways of looking at Newcastle’s financial picture. Mike Ashley would say it is incomparably healthier than the over-borrowed operation he took over in 2007; money was spent on wages, he has £129m loans interest-free which he did not reduce. Protesting fans see the £19m profit, £39m banked, and ubiquitous free Sports Direct advertising as evidence that Ashley sees the club as a cash cow.
Newcastle maintain this is unfair and have promised to invest this summer – as well as appoint a manager. The figures show the money is there.

Comment #100If McLaren gets the job, I’d advise him to offload half the current squad. Starting from the defense ( colocinni taylor Williamson mbabu and good).
My reason for Colo is due to his wilful suspension and sign of not being commited. Taylor and good (injuries). Others aren’t good enough. Only janmaat and janmaal (3Rd choice cb) are good enough.

Comment #102Reading what Abeid is apparently saying in Greek papers, he’s a dead cert out.
I hope Sammy stays until the new HC takes a look at him.
In fact, I know some players will be picked up, but still we should wait for the new coach to have a say as well. He’ll want to contribute in terms of personnel to our impending success.

The debt’s no surprise but what is disappointing is that Ashley’s determined that it remain on the books.
Investment an decent players and a decent coach could lead to Champions League and its millions. And were the Club to receive payment for the saturation SD advertising and sought more from big-name advertisers and sponsors, that income plus ECL income could go to pay off that debt.
But no, Ashley’s got it tied to the Club, thus deterring prospective buyers.

Jun 5, 2015 at 2:55 PM
Comment #109Abeid is in the last year of his contract so I can see them trying to get a few £ for him before he can talk to clubs in Jan. I would hope that he’s given a chance from the start of pre-season, he only played a few for us this season but he was the stand out player in the most of them. I would think we have to keep him.
Marv might do better with a more attack minded game plan and if he can stay fit. I’d hold on to him for pre season and if he still doesn’t fit get rid before the end of the window.

If I had to choose between Abeid & Marveaux I would go the latter since we need as many creative/flair players as possible.
Unless they start using Abeid higher up the pitch like he was used at PK.

Comment #114magpie season marv is so creative the french minnows he was playing for in a crap league dont want him back. one of the reasons is when he was injured missing 10 league games they took 20 points beating psg amongst others. in the other 28 league games with him available they took 29 points.
