There’s a report in the Shields Gazette today that Steve McClaren wants to bring his former Derby County assistant manager, 48 year-old Paul Simpson, to his coaching staff at Newcastle, to be his assistant manager.
And the report suggests that means that old boy Lee Clark will not be joining the coaching staff at Newcastle.
Paul Simpson with McClaren at Derby
Steve Round was also in the running to be the assistant manager, and he’s been a part-time coach at Derby since January, and Round was Steve’s assistant manager at Middlesbrough for six years – so it looks like he may miss out too.
Paul Simpson is under contract at Derby County, but not surprisingly he is said to be very keen to join Steve on Tyneside.
Simpson has some management experience having managed at Rochdale, Carlisle United, Preston North End, Shrewsbury Town, Stockport County and Northwich Victoria, before joining Derby with McClaren two years ago as the assistant manager.
And the other (very) good news is being reported in the Mirror, that fitness and conditioning guru and motivational speaker Steve Black is also ready to join Steve McClaren at Newcastle.
Hopefully Black can help prevent all the injuries we keep getting, and our players also need some inspiration after going through the second half of the season when a lot of them didn’t seem to want to play – so bad were their performances.
Steve was born in Newcastle and attended St.Cuthberts Grammar School.
And more good news is that Black has a very good relationship with Charlie Austin having worked with Harry Redknapp at QPR.
Newcastle are after Charlie as our number one target right now, and it’s understood if Black joins Newcastle that would be a huge draw for Austin, and it’s said to be one of the reasons he’s willing to sign for Newcastle, according to today’s Chronicle.
Steve Black – conditioning guru – motivational speaker – Geordie
Harry Redknapp said that Steve Black had a huge impact at QPR in many ways, and it would be a bit of a coup for McClaren and for Newcastle if we can get him to Newcastle – his home town club.
Steve Black coached England Rugby player Jonny Wilkinson, who has said this about the Geordie guru:
“It is difficult to narrow down what Blackie’s strengths are because there are no weaknesses.”
“His class is his ridiculous knowledge, his thirst for gaining more and his ability to apply it all to an athlete.”
“Blackie treats everybody as an individual and has always found the best way to help me to get better, just by being myself.”
It seems Steve McClaren is going to have a very good back-room staff at Newcastle.
Sounds (very) good to us.

Are you talking about Robbie Brady?! He’s had about 2 assists last season and no league goals!

Comment #86I missed this article about Carvers inability to motivate the team properly, it does give some indication of what SNC needs to deal with as a priority:
WEAKNESSES
finishing scoring chances
defending counter attacks
defending against attacks down the wings
defending against through ball attacks
aerial duels
avoiding individual errors

Comment #88Dutch daily Algemeen Dagblad have today reported that Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost has had talks with Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren over a transfer.
The 26-year-old is also being chased by other Premier League clubs (unfortunately the identity of those clubs are not revealed), however Newcastle’s interest is billed as the most “concrete” by Algemeen Dagblad.
2014-15 was a breakout season for Bas Dost, as the Dutch international scored 20 goals for Wolfsburg.

Only fully recovered from injury in the latter half and got a string of 5/6 MOTMs towards the end of their relegation battle, one of few that stood up and was counted for them, which obviously shows character as McClaren puts it. Stats aren’t everything, lift your eyes from the paper ya’ dweeb. Not his fault if chance after chance he created those on the end didn’t put them away. It’s a widely held view that he’s a great crosser of the ball and playing at LW, his original position, instead of WB or LB will give him all the more opportunity to provide for a capable ST.

To be fair to Brady he its not his fault he does not have more assists Hulls strikers could not score in a brothel!!
Watched quite a few Hulls games last season and some of his crosses were delightful put it this way if they had Cisse on the end of them instead of Jelavic etc it would have been us in the fizzy pop instead of them
Das Bost and Austin together then ? Probably means Cisse is getting moved on

Comment #93I doubt we will be in for both Dost AND Austin.
I know it seems that there are monies there to buy both but that is only speculation, has anyone heard that there is 40 to 50M available?
I think Dost will be the cheaper option so we will end up with hm,tho i would love Austin as our No 9.

Comment #96Bas Dost is even more reliant on service than Austin, literally has nothing else to his game other than movement around the box and scoring tap-ins, least we know Austin can cope physically and hold it up, challenge for headers and is a purer ST of the ball – a real Shearer heir – if we go for Dost over Austin it’s just another case of skimping and we haven’t really moved on from the past. Austin seemingly wants to come, the fans want Austin, get it done, no excuses.

here is the problem will he allow it? time will tell
wasn’t cisse offerd big money to go to the middle east in jan ?? so I can see him going,
I feel for goofy I think we have ruined the poor bloke he and obertan should just be offloaded
I would also offer taylor willo and cash for Austin they need defenders and we need to get rid cos of his injury record and bring in 2 decent centre backs

I’ve watched him play a fair bit, he was very good at u21’s he just hasn’t impressed me all that much this season, he was decent in a poor Hull side but even in Internationals he wasn’t great. I know he was injured for a bit but I don’t think he missed too much of the season. Fair enough he can get a cross in but I don’t see him as much of a step up.

Yes. Dave tompson was the guy. His son was never prem standard.
Apparently, the story goes thus…..
Dave T walks into the changing room after another poor result (DT himself is to blame for it because of poor investment). Anyway, he starts ranting and raving, and said something along the lines of “This is not acceptable, some team changes are going to made and some of you are getting dropped”.
Blackie, apparently without missing a beat, said “Yeah, starting with your son”.
P45 in the post afrer that, and relegation coincided with his departure. The rest is history, geography and home economics.

Scored 16 goals last season for Wolfsburg, fourth highest in the Bundesleague. Managed 4 against Leverkusen in the same game, one free kick, a header and two flick ins, so is heavily reliant on service and playing counter attack. Has very strong striking abilities and holds onto the ball, he could be just the player to lead SMCs’ fast breaking defensive team.

Comment #109BoyDoneGood…………..very good point that McClaren should be able to mould a team to suit his ideas.
Like you say there is not one player that can think they are above his coaching, so he should be able to command some respect.

You do have to acknowledge that Bost was the highest scorer in a team that scored 72 goals, however it would appear that he was very reliant on de Bruyne to provide them for him. KdB had 10 goals and 20 assists, nearly twice as many as any other player in the league.

Are we debating selling Perez? Why? We have enough dosh without doing that I hope. Rather cash in on Tiote, Williamson, Obertan, Gouffran and Anita if raising funds. Could be a gem for us, have a feeling alot of eyes will be on him next season to see if this season was just a one off. If he does well I think he may well be away for decent money.
I’ll be pleased if Steve Black comes in, I fancy a trio of McClaren, Clark, Black and maybe a role for Steve Watson. I’d be over the moon with that.
Never heard of this Simpson lad so can’t comment really, has he a good reputation?

Comment #114There has to be a hope that McClaren and Carr will see eye to eye on transfers rather better, perhaps resulting in us getting some signings he actually wants.
I remember Pardew complaining that the players bought in the winter of 2013 were no better than the ones he already had.
Some very decent players were not very brilliantly handled and my biggest hope for the new coaching regime is that it should be better with so-called problem players and less given to favouritism.

Instead of coming on moaning about so called moaners why not offer something enlightening then, ya know instead of moaning.
Better still, let’s forget everything that’s gone on at the club over the last 8 years and put our faith in a man who’s held us back but does one clearly staged interview offering nothing up apart from he’s not leaving until we win something. Sounds splendid.

I am certainly more inclined to put some trust in McClaren’s opinion of a player than I was in either of the past two incumbents or Allardyce. There was too much old-shouldering going on and I hope it stops now.
