McClaren Wants To Bring Hull City Winger To Newcastle

5:44 pm, Thursday, June 11th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 254 Comments

Sky Sports is reporting that both Newcastle and Derby County are interested in signing Hull City winger Tom Ince,

And that’s not surprising because Tom wasn’t doing much at Hull City and he went on loan to Derby County last February and scored 11 goals in just 18 games for Steve McClaren’s team last season.

Tom Ince _2014

Tom Ince – 23 year-old Hull winger

Ince still has one year left on his two year deal with Hull, after he joined them last year on a free transfer from Blackpool.

It’s not surprising Derby are interested in him, and with Steve McClaren now at Newcastle, it seems Steve McClaren is interested in bringing the 23 year-old to Newcastle.

However, the fee for Ince – with only one year left on his contract is thought to be around £4M – and that seems a bit much for a player who has never proved he can perform at the highest level – and played only 13 times for Hull with one goal last season before being shipped out to Derby.

Tom played very well for Steve last season at Derby, and the youngster could be persuaded to come to Newcastle – although the fact he didn’t make much headway for Hull in the first half of last season suggests he would be a risk at Newcastle.

But Steve McClaren has big money available this summer from Mike Ashley – by his own admission – and the owner has given the go ahead for the new Newcastle Board of Directors to start bringing new players into the club,  to significantly strengthen the squad.

Tom started his career at Liverpool before moving to Blackpool in 2011, where he spent three good seasons and in 113 games for the Seasiders he scored 33 goals and looked an impressive young player.

Newcastle have been interested in Tom for a few years now – so perhaps we can get the 18 times capped England U21 Intentional into the club this summer.

Can Steve McClaren Be Successful At Newcastle?

would take him for 3-4million – would rather have him and Aarons competing for the LW spot that Sammy, Gouffran or Obertan.

  • 2 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 11, 2015 at 5:53 PM

I am thinking loan with option to buy, simply because he has not proven himself at the top level, no matter how good he or his dad think he is. If aarons stays, id rather develop him anyway.

And on SMs chron interview, At least he seems positive and upbeat. And his intention seems to be on more attacking football, but not at the cost of results. So thats kind of reassuring.

It still depends on the backing.

  • 5 Riviere Run Dry // Jun 11, 2015 at 5:57 PM

A more likely purchase than Redmond for RW. Different style, plays more as a inside forward and is very good at curling shots in to the far corner from that side, many of his goals for Derby last season were like that and McClaren seems to be able to get the best out of him.

Him and Perez battling for the RWF position I wouldn’t mind seeing.

Not sure what went on at Hull, I watched nearly all their games last season and he began well then was inexplicably sent out on loan, Ramirez and Ben Arfa seen to be the finished product while he still needed work, which turned out to be a big mistake as those were both major flops for various reasons.

When you look at it like that, you can begin to understand his and his dad’s indignation. Full of promise, a decent start to the season, then supplanted for supposed more established players, without any real justification.

Another Counter-attacking player, fast over the ground and passes quickly.

  • 7 p // Jun 11, 2015 at 5:57 PM

I think we should sack Steve McClaren

  • 8 Riviere Run Dry // Jun 11, 2015 at 5:57 PM

Only has a year left on his deal, so they’re not gonna loan him to us.

  • 9 Big Archie // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:02 PM

Does somebody need to remind McClaren that he’s not in the Championship any more, so bringing all his Derby mates and targets with him is probably not going to cut it?

  • 10 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:02 PM

    Riv

Ah well then i am not sure i’d risk him at all, then. Agree that Redmond would be a better call.

  • 11 SUTTY1978 // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:04 PM

Hull only signed him on a 2 year deal? That’s very unusual, especially for a young player

  • 13 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:06 PM

    Sutty

Maybe they had doubts about his top-flight capabilities too, and did not want to be stuck long term if he didnt cut it. A shorter contract makes him easier to offload.

  • 14 SUTTY1978 // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:08 PM

Think we might end up with a squad like Hull or Qpr if we’re not careful, doesn’t sound like aiming for top 8 with these kind of targets, should be looking at Holland rather than the championship

  • 15 SUTTY1978 // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:10 PM

I’d be surprised if they do want to offload now seeing as they have now dropped down to his natural level. Personally wouldn’t touch any of Hulls squad if we want to strengthen

  • 16 Mr Magpie // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:12 PM

Well if the price is right he would be a good addition, much better than Obertan or Gouffran. McClaren seemed to get him playing some good football whilst at Derby & him & Aarons competing would be good.

I would be surprised if Derby would be willing to sell Hughes to us though, sure Clement would want to keep him & can’t imagine we are their favourite team at the moment.

  • 17 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:13 PM

    Sutty

Yeah they probably want to keep him now, but if they had stayed up and he hadn’t cut it, then they could have sold him to derby.

  • 18 hibbit // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:14 PM

sutty no one knows who we are looking at people are just playing about with lists hoping……… the truth is we haven’t a clue

  • 19 Riviere Run Dry // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:16 PM

I’d like to see it. He’s done well for McClaren at Derby and seems the type that needs to find a manager that he’s compatible with and I could see McClaren’s hands-on coaching really bringing him on. Has raw ability, McClaren’s job is to take those types and make them the best they can be. If he’s seen something he likes whilst working with him and thinks he can get him to make the step up, I nor anybody else is really in a position to say otherwise.

Wouldn’t read much in to the 2-year contract, and definitely wouldn’t attribute that to Hull not been sure about the deal, more likely Ince and his dad calling the shots on that one.

  • 20 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:17 PM

If you look at that highlights reel of Ince I dont really remember Gouffran or Obertan scoring any goals like that for us …….

I think he would be a good squad player and we need depth in the wide areas would like us to get a Dutch winger as well so we can go 433

  • 21 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:21 PM

    Bunga

433 is deffo the way to go. SM likes it. Our current first 11 just about suits it, and with some decent aditions it would be perfect.

  • 22 Riviere Run Dry // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:22 PM

As I said, it was an obvious mistake on Bruce’s part, loaning him out after a decent first 3/4 PL appearances, in favour of the awful Ramirez and reluctant Ben Arfa. He looked bright and eager to do well, then Bruce’s eyes lit up and the chance to get bigger names in and allow him to leave on loan to develop. Most Hull fans were were scratching their heads early season, when he just disappeared from the squad after those first few starts.

  • 23 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:23 PM

    @YouCouldn’tMakeItUp

We have always had the team for a 433 but for some reason never really play it would like to see Austin as the no 9 with Perez cutting in on the left hand side and someone like Ince or Townsend cutting in on the right hand side with De Jong just behind in the no 10 position

  • 24 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:24 PM

Get Ince signed up he’s a way better player than Obertron

  • 25 SUTTY1978 // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:27 PM

I liked him at Blackpool, seemed top class. Actually thought Matt Phillips was the better of the two though. Both seem to have been poor at premier league level though. 11 goals in the championship is a piece of piss, certainly doesn’t prove he can step up. Wouldn’t mind him as a squad player but wouldn’t want him holding back Aarons, good back up for right wing though

  • 28 Essex Geordie Bill // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:35 PM

with all of this talk about good young prospects, what I would like to see is Ferguson given another chance to show what he can do. Along with some of the other youngsters on the books, why spend money when we may already have what we need?

Steve needs to have a look at the players that have come (are coming) through the academy.

  • 29 Riviere Run Dry // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:36 PM

Yeah Abeid , Sammy , Vuckic and Ferguson may get a chance to impress in pre season

  • 32 Essex Geordie Bill // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:40 PM

I would have an injury free Andy Carroll back in a shot, I’d bet that most of the defenders in the EPL would have him near the top of the list in players they least want to face.

Better still he would be our ‘Beast’ and better than Dost IMO.

  • 33 Essex Geordie Bill // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:44 PM

I remember the tale (myth) where JFK (I think it was him) who asked who the brilliant winger was playing for Birmingham (think it was them) when Ferguson was on loan to them. You couldn’t make it up!!

  • 34 Riviere Run Dry // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:47 PM

Well Simon Bird of The Mirror, our new preferred ‘media partners’ and who interviewed McClaren is now saying Austin will be signed by this time next week, with quite a degree of certainty.

  • 35 Essex Geordie Bill // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:47 PM

    Riviere

Do you have to sling sh!te to be classed as a regular, I’l try to comply in future. 🙂

  • 36 Big Pappa Cissé // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:47 PM

Hearing we are also looking at Townsend who I think would be a fantastic signing . Townsend and Aarons would destroy full backs and if Austin is in the middle he is sure to hit 20 goals with that kind of service especially with De Jong behind him :

    ——Townsend——–De Jong——–Aarons——–
    —————————Austin————————–

Yes Please, Flying wingers like the Keegan days 😉 .

  • 37 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:48 PM

Is Birdy to be believed tho Riviere?

  • 38 swemag // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:49 PM

Yes to Abeid , Sammy , Vuckic.

Ferguson could not hold down a place in the Championship, not sure why he would offer us anything in the Premier League. Time for him to move on and find his level.

  • 39 SUTTY1978 // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:50 PM

Too many of the youngsters are not young enough, all them will take up valuable squad places and will be reasons why we can’t bring other players in. Buckie deserves a shot, AbeI’d should definitely stay. Fergie & Sammy should be out of the door

  • 40 GeordieTwo // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:50 PM

What’s this then? Just started and already talking about us becoming one of the top 10 clubs in EUROPE Steve? Better calm down and stop smoking the dream weed. We have a woeful squad and a woeful owner. Baby steps Steve.

  • 41 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:51 PM

Slight shinging is compulsary! (Yes i swapped it on purpose)

  • 42 Mr Magpie // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:52 PM

I would be happy with him coming in to compete with the other strikers but not an automatic starter or instead of Austin as he is just not reliable with his fitness.

The trouble is he is still a bit of a gamble so it would have to be in on loan with the option to buy if he keeps injury free & is able to maintain his fitness, the same as Van Ginkel.

  • 43 GeordieTwo // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:53 PM

I’m thinking Steve has had too much time off and has started to hallucinate. He thinks he just took over Liverpool. We need several very good windows to make top 8 in the Prem let alone be one of the top 10 clubs in Europe. Talk about over the top.

  • 44 Riviere Run Dry // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:54 PM

    TFL

Dunno, but why would Mash’s trusted media partners put stuff out there like that, knowing that if it doesn’t materialise it’ll only get backs up again?

I should take my own advice from a few weeks ago really and take a break from all things football related until this month is out! Much clearer picture by then.

  • 45 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:55 PM

    G2

Our squad is good enough. The main question is, will Steve bring back the continental set piece off kicking the ball to willo? Or will he adopt Carvers more classic Blasting it at the nearest defenders knees? These are the only two methods that will gaurantee a zero goal return. We cant have any goal threats from our set plays.

  • 46 JP...from The Rock // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:55 PM

Sign him now! I rate him highly. I think he can develop into a very good player for us. Much better than Gouffran and Obertan that’s for sure.

  • 47 mikeashleyisamackem // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:55 PM

How is 4 million to much
He is a top championship player
It is a very reasonable fee if you ask me
Not to even mention he is British so he is a bit over priced anyway
I would sign him as back up along with Rolando and I would sign a top winger also someone like Valencia
We need 2 centre backs a left back a centre mid 2 new wingers and 2 new strikers and a new keeper and 5 development players
That is what the bare minimum is to achieve top 8
Two 20 million pound strikers a 20 million pound winger a 20 million pound centre back a ten million pound cmid
And the rest would shop around for cheap
That’s what we need 120 million investment on transfer fees
If ashley is serious about ambition then he has to cough up as we have no chance if we are shopping at bargain basement like Tom ince

  • 48 GeordieTwo // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:55 PM

Will Austin really want to come to an unstable club like ours? My guess is he will go for the best wage available with a club he feels he can be a starting player on. Lots of clubs will give him that chance and will offer better wages than we will. Hope I’m wrong though as I like him as a player.

  • 49 GeordieTwo // Jun 11, 2015 at 6:57 PM

In that case Ashley is not serious MAIAM mate @47. Mike spend 120M pounds on us? Dream on mate. If he spends 40M I will be surprised.

  • 50 GeordieTwo // Jun 11, 2015 at 7:01 PM

YCMIU mate, yes I see your point. With our tremendous depth (Obertan, Saylor, etc. etc.) we probably don’t need to bring in more than one modestly expensive player for about 5M pounds and a low wage. Then we have to pray we don’t lead the league in injury time again. Then we have to pray Obertan learns how to play football. Then we have to pray nobody tests our central defense. Then we have to pray Riviere learns how to shoot at net. Other than that it’s top 10 in Europe all the way!!!!

  • 52 mikeashleyisamackem // Jun 11, 2015 at 7:02 PM

Mourinho would struggle to get top eight with 40 million investment with our squad
People have been suckered into thinking we have ambition 40 million is not ambition that’s a fee for o e player for are Arsnal
We will be in same position next year if that is the case

  • 53 mikeashleyisamackem // Jun 11, 2015 at 7:05 PM

Sell Cisse, Gouff, Obertan, Willo, Anita, Sissoko, Tiote, S Taylor.

    Krul
    Elliot
    Darlow

    Lascelles
    Janmaat
    Dummet
    Haidara
    Colo
    Richards
    Dawson
    Rose
    Sterry

    Townsend
    Lennon
    Colback

    De Jong
    Ince
    Ameobi
    Arrons
    Abeid

Much needed pace, experience with a bit of flair. Think that team could provide excitement and good football. With decent strength through injuries.

Get the clear out finished with first Steve. Out with Saylor, Obertan, Riviere, Tiote, Ferguson, and anybody else you find who can’t kick a ball. Then focus on players that we have a realistic chance of signing (I’m not sure who that actually is). Are we still counting on getting players on low wages or for free? Lots of questions remain to be answered. Forget about top 10 in Europe Steve for now at least. We just finished 15th and barely avoided relegation. Don’t start off by sounding like a pinhead to the press.

McClaren saying some good stuff in the Chron.

“Everyone’s got a clean slate,” he said.

“I’ve got no preconceptions of anyone – they are all damned good players. At the end of the day they have to produce and cross the white line for us.

“As a staff we’ll try to get them producing and get everyone on the same page. At the moment there seem to be a lot of pages flying about. We need to work out what we’re trying to do and get everyone going in the right direction to do it.

“A lot of the next few weeks is communication. What can we do to improve things?”

Newcastle are hoping to sign a new striker as part of a six-man recruitment drive and hope to broker a deal for QPR’s in-demand Charlie Austin.

“Wherever I’ve gone I’ve always said you’re only as good as your players. Recruitment nowadays is the most important thing. There’s a lot of money in the Premier League, everyone is about equal, everyone wants to go forward so it’s about doing it right,” he said.

“It’s a jungle out there trying to get the right players but recruitment is vital. Firstly my energies are going to be about that and if we do that we’ve had a damned good start.”

McClaren has also been tasked with getting more out of his existing squad, including a number of players who spent a chunk of last season injured.

“I’ve already had a look at this. There seemed to be some quite horrendous injuries. We divide them into soft tissue issues and direct contact ones – a lot of them seem to be contact ones that have lasted a long time.

“We’re going to review everything the club has been doing. The first thing is the present playing squad – assessing it and what can we do to improve things? What can we add? That’s the priority but my remit is to reviewing it, listening to what people are saying and putting a plan together by July 1 when everyone comes back.”

McClaren says he wants his team to “fight” and to take the West Ham performance as a minimum standard moving forward. The result, he admits, is everything.

“One thing I want to see is exciting players – a bit of pace, a bit of speed and individualism. This crowd has always had a number nine-style player and it’d be great to get one of them in,” he added.

  • 140 Riviere Run Dry // Jun 11, 2015 at 8:15 PM

£65k a week he is on, after rejecting the Muckems offer of £90k per week. We’d never offer him anything like that. I believe he was on £55k pw at Man City and even that would’ve been to pricey for us, I fear.

Look at Riviere he couldn’t score in a brothel

that’s why he wont be going to Chelsea very rarely do the top teams buy a player after one good season

Having used this blog for eight years now I’d like to say I have a good knowledge of proceedings, I was completely fooled by pokat, which I do think was out of order. However riverie runs dry is an obvious ex poster having a dig, I know for a fact it is Ian Toon..

I remember Ian Toon before I signed up ( Iv’e been reading this blog for about 6 years now ) what was the reason he changed his name?

  • 202 NezzaNUFC // Jun 11, 2015 at 9:25 PM

I think that Jeff is now called Jane!

I’m trying to think of another poster who changed his name because he stuck up for Pardew in every way possible but I can’t for the likes of me get my head around that name!

  • 203 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 11, 2015 at 9:26 PM

Nezza do you mean Jeff from Benwell?
    he’s had a sex change?

Could be but I’m sure there was another one but the name was just Jeff?

But that other poster I think was called delux or something similar but I’m sure it had DE at the beginning

  • 206 jazzyp // Jun 11, 2015 at 9:31 PM

Personally think Austin would be a cracking start to the summer rebuilding project McLaren has on his hands.
10 mill would be a fair price for a proven prem goalscorer.

  • 207 LewSpi v2.0 // Jun 11, 2015 at 9:34 PM

What has happened to the fans of Newcastle United?

Reading through some of the comments on this blog makes my stomach turn. Some people have been absolutely brain washed by Mike Ashley over the past 8 years. They’d rather see us buy a sub par player and think they were getting a deal than see their club spend an extra few quid on a decent player.

Most people are bouncing off the walls with excitement because we apparently have £40-£60 million to play with this summer, a price some clubs in the league spend on one player. And we’ve been given it to build a whole new team with it. Give your heads a shake. Most established premier league clubs get that much to spend every summer, but because we haven’t had it for 2 or 3 years, it’s like the best thing that’s ever happened. I’m not trying to discourage the positivity, but this is the bare minimum for a premier league club, and Ashley has made (some of) us ecstatic with it.

It’s as if he’s treat us so badly for 8 years that some people are happy to settle for mediocrity. For example, can you imagine the delight if the board decided to strip away all Sports Direct advertising? We’d be over the moon. BUT IT SHOULDN’T BE THERE TO START WITH.

Don’t get me wrong this whole ‘fresh start’ thing is a step in the right direction, but howdy lads, don’t forget to take a look at the big picture. The bare minimum is NOT enough for Newcastle United.

  • 208 NezzaNUFC // Jun 11, 2015 at 9:34 PM

Wasn’t there a Mackem that use to come on here on Derby match days but didn’t know the Mackem players?

I’m not having a dig but

“Most people are bouncing off the walls with excitement because we apparently have £40-£60 million to play with this summer, a price some clubs in the league spend on one player”

Only the top teams spend this much on one player and if you checked the middle and small teams in the PL you will be lucky if they get anywhere around 30 million to spend every season.

    good post though

  • 214 LewSpi v2.0 // Jun 11, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Tom Ince to name but one.

He’s a championship player, he may grow into an ok premiership player given time, but he isn’t a top 10 in the premier league player, not yet.

And then you have things like this…

“Juanmi has bags of potential and is only 22. Perfect opportunity to buy low and sell extremely high.”

What fan in their right mind looks to potential transfer signings with a view to making a few quid? This isn’t a game of monopoly, we just wanna watch some decent football, and not have to worry about the accounts. Unfortunately, because of Ashley, its the way some supporters of Newcastle think.

  • 215 cestriasteve // Jun 11, 2015 at 9:44 PM

Getting rid of Carver and his cronies gives us reason to be slightly optimistic. Finally getting rid of the dead wood that are simply not good enough is a start. actually being given hope that we will actually spend is hope for the fans.

In fairness to that comment @213 I think it was leading to a more of a Bale situation.

We were shocked at the 35 million we got on AC and what a deal it was, but it would be nice if say the mega rich clubs came in for one of our players and say they bidded like 60-70 million for that one player.

Think a massive plus for Nufc next season will be a fit Siem de jong .
Would suit playing just behind the CF and looked a 10-15 goal a season man how he started in pre season last summer.Aaronns is another who could shine next season if stays fit. Along with Krull-Janmaat-Sissoko and some quality additions, hopefully we get back to where Nufc belong

jazzy, nobody want SDJ to perform more than me but he now has a history of Injury issues with his calf issues and lung issues ( hopefully now cured) but he scored max. 16 goals I think in the Dutch league and champions league in 2012/13 I think.
If he’s fit build the team around him, great leader, great play maker but alas not proven in the EPL.

  • 254 croftus5678 // Jun 11, 2015 at 10:27 PM

imo siem has always been an acm much like cabaye.

he’s not fast but knows where and when he needs to be and is always calm with his shots/passes.

imo we need to play him in a diamond with a workhorse behind him and 2 wingers either side as well as 2 strikers pushing the line as he will see that through ball.

and yep a calm head with a desire to win makes a great captain imo and its either him or janmaat for me but my first choice would be siem due to his playing position.
