Newcastle Reported In Talks With Dutch International Striker

1:50 pm, Thursday, June 11th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 16 Comments

Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad (AD) is reporting today that Steve McClaren and Newcastle United are in talks for Wolfsburg’s Dutch International striker Bas Dost – who we have been linked with all this year.

Newcastle seem to be leading the way for our number one striker target Charlie Austin, and there’s even news today that he is willing to sign for Newcastle.

But Newcastle must bring in two strikers this summer, and there’s no time like the present to start bringing players into the club.  now that Steve McClaren’s been appointed as the head coach.

Bas is 6’5″ tall and has been at Wolfsburg now for four seasons now but he arrived after McClaren had been sacked by the German club in late 2010.

There will be various reports that now that McClaren has been hired and there’s a new structure to the Newcastle Board of Directors – Newcastle are after a (large) number of targets.

But Newcastle must also move quickly, and hopefully get a number of good new players into the club before pre-season training starts in about three weeks time.

Bas is a powerful player and scored 20 goals in 35 appearances for Wolfsburg last season, in what was a breakout season for the striker.

Dost made his Dutch International debut in March at the Amsterdam ArenA, and came on as a sub after 63 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Turkey in a Euro 2016 qualifier.

In his four years at Wolfsburg he’s played 84 games with 37 goals and he was at Heerenveen before he joined the German club.

In his career he has 114 goals in 247 total appearances, and he played 10 times for the Dutch U21 side and scored five goals.

He would be a good signing for us and an Austin – Bas partnership up front would be a great one for us,

Comments welcome.

Anyone keeping a count on the number of players linked? Reckon this summer could be a record….

Never actually seen Dost play, is he good in the air or 6ft5 and jumps 5ft4?

Austin still first choice for me, Egnlish, strong, proven can score in the PL, looks a better fit for the number9. Couldnt see Dost and Austin playing together really.

I’d sign him just because I like his name.

84 games in 4 years doesn’t look good.

    Is he a perma crock?

    OP

He missed about 2/3 of the season before last (13/14) with injury, All the other seasons there he was un-injured.

    Rotonda,

I was using Taylor as an example, im aware his contribution has been poor through injuries. It’s not a black and white agenda, it’s English what I would like to see. Maybe a Caulker, Dawson, plenty English CB’s out there who would be an upgrade on Williamson.

On Dost, his record looks decent. If it were a decision between him and Austin though I’d take Austin. I’d be shocked if we signed both.

I’d accept Cisse going if they were serious about both, maybe it could be done if those funds are added or part of a deal. Just seems unlikely.

Can’t wait until we start seeing players come through the door to see what has changed or not.

    @3

Ive seen Dost a few times and he.s got a good strike rate, tho he does,nt do much as a team player.
His game is the typical target man who needs plenty of service.

get austin and bamford the bamford deal should not be a loan deal, bamford still young and will improve with time. but with our newcastle i might be day dreaming.

Him and Austin pairing up with Perez at the front would be one heck of a good front line, knockdowns for Perez to run on to and do his magic.
