The Mirror is reporting today that Newcastle United are keen on Kieran Trippier of Burnley, who is said to be available for just £3.5M this summer, and that fee is low because it’s a relegation buy-out clause in his contract.
Kieran Trippier – Burnley right back
Trippier plays at right back and we suppose Newcastle need some cover for Daryl Janmaat, although right back is not one of our priority positions to fill this summer.
Strikers and center-backs and a play-maker seem to be the positions we need to get players in for this summer.
The Mirror is reporting that Tottenham, Liverpool, Southampton and Newcastle are the clubs keen to sign the Englishman who joined Burney from Manchester City back in July, 2011.
Since then he’s played 185 times for Burnley with 6 goals, and was on loan at Barnsley earlier in his career, where he played 44 times for 2 goals.
Tottenham are said to be favorites to sign the player – but if Newcastle are pursuing right backs this summer we really hope the club are not thinking of selling Daryl Janmaat, who was our best player this season.
Newcastle have to cut out selling our best players if we really are to build a side that can challenge for the top eight in the Premier League and try to win a cup in the next few seasons.
We’d be surprised if Newcastle are really interested in Trippier.
What do you think?

Comment #1Why would you be surprised? We have no real cover at right back. If we are to be looking to compete then we surely need competition for places, and options over the course of a season.
Spurs have Walker, Yeddelin, and Dier as cover as well. Trippier would be an excellent signing for us.

Comment #2I’m pleased the way the club have acted.
Firstly getting shot of Carver and Stone who I’m sure would have pi**ed off some or all the players, and would have created a poisonous atmosphere in the dressing room..
Appointing McClaren who is probably the best British coach. Fergie is the most successful manager but by his own admission rarely did the actual coaching. He left things to his coaching staff like McClaren.
Appointing McClaren, Carr and Moncur to the board. Charnley will still make the final decisions but in football matters he shouldn’t be lacking in any expert opinions. Also removing himself from the board Ashley has probably removed the elephant from the room.
The next steps are appointing McClaren’s assistants who I am assuming are his loyal (and by all accounts extremely capable) lieutenants.
Now we need some decent new players and if we are to believe the media (which is never a good idea) it looks like Austin will be one of them. I wonder if McClaren will do what all new managers tend to do and raid his former club as there are some very good players at Derby.
For this week, so far so good.

Comment #4Not convinced by Guidetti. He seems to have struggled since his illness. Was very disappointing at Stoke, and certainly didn’t show the right sort of attitude or character there. 1 goal every 3 appearances for Celtic in the SPL is hardly a ringing endorsement of his ability either.
Think we should be looking for better than that.

Comment #5Micah and Trippier will be good, we will need probably 1 more CB if the sales of Willo goes through. Leeds interested in Willo for 1.5mil

Comment #7Did anyone read Mr Claremont’s book on the previous thread? The lad’s put a lot of effort into that. He might not bother in future if you lot are going to blank him.
Never mind Claremont. Old Blackley battled on even though his glass eye started to snore. It was worth it just to learn a new definition of an inside forward. Not sure I share your view that wholesale changes are not required or your high praise of Janmaat, who may have been our best performer last season but was only half decent.

Cisse is as you say until 2017 but he has turned 30 now so his value will drop.

Spot on. McClaren wasn’t the most exciting option, but he’s the best English head coach around – ahead of Pardew etc, and ahead of Premiership perennials like Allardyce and Pulis. Whether he’s better than Moyse or Rogers only time will tell, and new young coaches like Monk and Sherwood may fulfil their early promise.
Also I suppose we’ll be buying largely from the Championship, and he certainly knows the calibre of those players, and has useful experience and contacts from Twente etc. We could have done a lot worse.

Comment #11If we are going to win one of the domestic cups, The Premiership and then onto Europe we need depth in the squad.
Janmaat starts the Premiership matches no question.
The Burnley lad gets some Prem games depending on injuries, bench starts and Cup matches.
Sorted.

Comment #12I think Trippier would be a good addition , i think micah richards needs to be looked at 1st though free agent and probs would accept about 50grand a week for a few years and then get the burnley lad in for back up on a 6year deal and use him where needs be ,
