We had a report out yesterday that Newcastle were back in for Florian Thauvin, the French winger who has been at Marseilles for two years and was a target of Newcastle United while he was still at Bastia back in early 2013.
Florian Thauvin – 22 year-old available this summer
The initial report was in Le Parisian, and Marseilles are short of money and will have to get some funds in from the sale of one or more of their players before the end of the month, if they are to meet their financial commitments, and therefore Newcastle hopefully have a chance to get a bargain buy for the 22 year-old.
Marseilles paid out £15M – including bonuses – for the winger two years ago when he moved from Lille to Marseilles, without ever playing for Lille, since he had been allowed to stay at Bastia through the end of the 2012-2013 season when Lille signed him in January of 2013.
In today’s exchange rates that’s around £10.8M, and there’s a good chance we could do a deal for (a lot) less than that this month.
The Chronicle today are suggesting that Marseilles may be willing to cut a deal with Newcastle for the youngster, and given the state of Marseilles finances at the moment – that sounds like it could be a potential bargain basement buy for Newcastle.
Marseilles Chairman is Vincent Labrune and he has said this to French radio station RMC:
“We have offers for several players.” “If we have an offer that we like, we will open the door.” “We have never had as many offers for as many players as we do now. Thauvin, Imbula and Payet have a lot of offers.”
It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if Newcastle are one of the clubs that have already put in a bid for the skillful French U21 winger.
Thauvin played 38 games last season with 5 goals and 8 assists, and in his two years at the French club he’s played 79 games with 15 goals and 14 assists, and Chief Scout Graham Carr seems to really rate this player.
Florian Thauvin could be an excellent acquisition for us – especially if we can get him at a bargain basement price.
