Newcastle After Bargain Basement Buy In France

We had a report out yesterday that Newcastle were back in for Florian Thauvin, the French winger who has been at Marseilles for two years and was a target of Newcastle United while he was still at Bastia back in early 2013.

Florian Thauvin – 22 year-old available this summer

The initial report was in Le Parisian, and Marseilles are short of money and will have to get some funds  in from the sale of one or more of their players before the end of the month, if they are to meet their financial commitments,  and therefore Newcastle hopefully have a chance to get a bargain buy for the 22 year-old.

Marseilles paid out £15M – including bonuses – for the winger two years ago when he moved from Lille to Marseilles,  without ever playing for Lille,  since he had been allowed to stay at Bastia through the end of the 2012-2013 season when Lille signed him in January of 2013.

In today’s exchange rates that’s around £10.8M, and there’s a good chance we could do a deal for (a lot) less than that this month.

The Chronicle today are suggesting that Marseilles may be willing to cut a deal with Newcastle for the youngster, and given the state of Marseilles finances at the moment – that sounds like it could be a potential bargain basement buy for Newcastle.

Marseilles Chairman is Vincent Labrune and he has said this to French radio station RMC:

“We have offers for several players.” “If we have an offer that we like, we will open the door.” “We have never had as many offers for as many players as we do now. Thauvin, Imbula and Payet have a lot of offers.”

It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if Newcastle are one of the clubs that have already put in a bid for the skillful French U21 winger.

Thauvin played 38 games last season with 5 goals and 8 assists, and in his two years at the French club he’s played 79 games with 15 goals and 14 assists, and Chief Scout Graham Carr seems to really rate this player.

Florian Thauvin could be an excellent acquisition for us – especially if we can get him at a bargain basement price.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Raul Albentosa (6’4″ CB ) looked the business when Derby got him in January.Unfortunately got injured after only 8 games . Will he opt to stay with the Spanish speaking Paul Clement or prefer to move with SM ?

Like the HC, Charnley’s had months to prepare the ground for completing transfers before pre-season starts.

With McLaren kicking his arse as well as Carr’s there’re surely no justification for not getting decent players in to cover the essential positions that have been neglected over recent months.

They’ll have no excuses when STs don’t sell and (hopefully) Ashley starts to ask questions when the AO protests kick off again.

If you think £15m is too much for a young English international striker, then you can bet your boots the likes of Chelsea, Swansea, Southampton, WHU and other ‘top’ clubs put their offers in.

    £15m for Austin’d be a steal.

Good afternoon to you too 🙂

…everyone should be able to discuss with one another and as you rightly put it “in a nice manner”!

Not sure the WUMS (depending on who they are) are the problem all the time.

We have our very own instigator on this blog!

Disgraceful, have him walk the plank after a few days in the brig while being fed stale biscuits and sea water!

Aye, it seems to have originated in the Mirror, and others have picked it up. The other preferred partner SSNHQ have said nothing yet.

I do think the story has some legs though.

lesh…I am not sure £15M for Austin is a steal. How do you mean that’s a steal?

It might be little money for Chelsea, but then again they don’t ming spending twice that much on a player with out the worry of it paying off!

Austin would be a gamble at £15M for us in my book. Maybe we need to take a gamble, but that’s another discussion.

I do agree with Jesper that 15 mill is a lot of money for Austin, Especially when Remy is going for 8 mill
