Potential Good News On Newcastle’s Pursuit Of Charlie Austin

9:41 am, Sunday, June 14th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 27 Comments

There is news in the Telegraph today that Chelsea are getting very close to getting Colombian striker Radamel Falcao to Stamford Bridge on loan next week with an option to buy next summer, but the London club want the 29 year-old to take a wage cut before they seal the season-long loan deal for the Monaco striker.

Falcao is on £265K/week wages at Monaco – how ridiculous is that?

Radamel Falcao – while at Manchester United last season

One of the reasons Monaco are trying to unload the player is because he’s the highest wage earner at the club, and they are expected to be in trouble with the UEFA Financial Fair Play restrictions

The Telegraph is reporting the negotiations have been going on for two weeks now, and Chelsea are serious in trying to get the striker to Stamford Bridge, presumably as a replacement for Didier Drogba who has left the club.

The deal is said to be 90% done and that could be good news for Newcastle’s pursuit of Charlie Austin,  because Chelsea were also rumored to be after the QPR hit-man.

Chelsea could still need another striker if they allow Loic Remy to leave the club, but the Telegraph are reporting the Blues may go after Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann if the French striker does leave.

Loic wants out because he didn’t play enough at Stamford Bridge last season, and that should be a message to Charlie  that he would not get a lot of games in London.

With Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao at the club, and with Jose Mourinho preferring to play just one striker up front, would mean that Austin would not get many starts at the Premier League Champions.

And in any case Charlie can be a hero at Newcastle, and he’s been told that by a number of people associated with Newcastle – including his team-mate Joey Barton.

It’s vital that Newcastle get Charlie Austin signed up this summer asap.

He would be a fantastic signing for us.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    NUFC busy doing nothing.

I don’t think Austin will be a fantastic signing, my standards haven’t been lowered by Ashley but my expectations have.

To be fair we cant talk to Austin until england duty is finished, so makes sense it has gone quiet.

Plus we always insist on the selling club keeping deals quiet until completed so if we have sorted the fee then QPR wont announce it.

Give it til wednesday and i think it will be sorted out. Chelsea, liverpool wont want him, he will be 2nd choice for Soton behind Pelle or Benteke at Villa, think we are the only club mentioned where he will be 1st choice and with the Euros at the end of the season no-one in contention for a place in the squad will move somewhere where they wont be first choice.

I hope he’s not going North for his hols
He could end up harpooned !!!

How good is Austin anyway if someone should judge him fairly?

    …like in a comparison!

  • 6 sparky55 // Jun 14, 2015 at 9:52 AM

LMAO…Chelsea were never after Austin…he’s good but nowhere near as good even as Remy…and look how many games he got last year…Austin was never on Chelsea’s radar…never in a million years

I don’t know why paul simpson would be viewed as a good appointment as a number 2 seeing as he has done nothing but fail pretty much everywhere he’s been. Butt certainly doesn’t get the juices flowing either.

Zenden or a coach with Barca connections would be great for the coaching side of things. I was hoping the Barca number 2 would be our left field choice for manager.

My first act would be to ditch Colo, Saylor and Willo. SM says clean slate, clean slate my —-!

Fast paced ball playing CBs like Bruno Indi and similar would be my first port of call.

Secondly a couple of creative midfielders are a must and finally some strikers with pace, a la Remy.

Probably won’t see any of the above, just a crocked AC and a couple of loans

Liverpool are now after Charlie Austin !!!
    Which begs the question .
Should NUFC be interested in any of these 3 ?
Mario Balotelli , Rickie Lambert , Fabio Borini .

jesper…I’d put him below Cisse…so basically the level of player we should be able to attract and we’d be able to give him a reasonable assurance of first team football…but he’ll cost more than 9.9 million and IMO he won’t want to come up to Newcastle either…so dead in the water for a good number of reasons.

If he went to any of the top five teams he wouldn’t get a regular game….not even at spurs. Southampton have to be favourites surely

Does anyone know why Austin failed his medical at Hull in 2013? and how much QPR paid for him?

  • 11 cyprus // Jun 14, 2015 at 9:58 AM

I think we’ve discovered through the years with CF’s that they may or may not come good and this applies everywhere.

I admit that I haven’t seen enough of this Austin to be ecstatic (or not) about him. I’ve seen more of Berahino who seems quite good for, say, 13 mil. Him with Austin should set us back about 25 mil, no more. Let’s not forget that we need another 4 first team players, two certs and two talented maybes. That’s about 6 mil each and we’ve purchased duds at that price before. Hell, we bought a 15 mil flop in the past.

Relax, liverpool wont take Austin, they have Sturridge and Ings now, why would Austin go there the season before the Euros to miss more games than he plays?

    Plus its sunday.

sparky55.. Shouldn’t we be looking at someone better and different then? At the prize of £15M you can get a really good prolific goalscore in Europe!

  • 14 optimistic prime // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:00 AM

A slightly better version of Danny Graham

  • 15 Ron Knee // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:02 AM

Is McClaren being paid more than Pardew? It would be interesting to know!

  • 16 sparky55 // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:02 AM

Rotonda…back on the money there mate!

Zenden will be very good for us…he was a very very good player and he’ll get our midfield talent playing the way we all want them to play…which is why IMO we won’t be buying many midfielders in the summer…we’ve already got a reasonable amount of talent in the midfield…we just need to coach them properly and get out the ‘Men in Black’ torch that makes them forget all that has gone on before so they revert to what they used to be before they were Pardewed and play to their strengths.

I think we’ll sell four and buy four with a nett spend of 19 million tops…most of the casualties will be defensive.

Can you guarantee that a european forward will handle the Pl? Austin scored 18 goals in the PL playing for the worst team in the league.

Id rather go for him as you know what you get than take a 15m gamble on a player who may/may not adapt quickly.

Can’t help thinking this is all helping staff at nufc especially the PR dept to have a nice relaxing week, letting the rumours ferment. Must be quite a relief to have the focus taken off you after being u.der the hammer for do long

  • 19 optimistic prime // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:07 AM

We wanted Remy a few years ago now we’re after Austin. Ba Cisse and Remy are all a class above Austin.

IMO our standards have dropped not improved.

  • 20 sparky55 // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:07 AM

Jesper…I agree…but anyone at over10 million will be priced out of our market…so we will have to go with a prolific goal scorer for less money so maybe not so prolific will fit the bill in the hope he gets better under the stewardship of SM and BZ.

Bolo is key to this working…he’ll probably be a better coach than Maclaren but who cares as long as it works!!!

  • 21 Jail for Ashley // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:08 AM

Can those of you all remember when the club said they’d only sign the players with the right attitude. Well that attidute had nothing to do with being a self styled gangster or wife beater, it had nothing to do with being prepared to go on strike to force a move or sit and rot in the reserves until your contract ran out. What the right attitude really means is being prepared to forsake any chance of silverware on poor wages on the off chance you’ll be picked up at a bigger club for more money while turning a profit for the club.

  • 22 cyprus // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:12 AM

We’ve tried top CF’s both from abroad and locally with disastrous results. People like Rush (ok he was 72), Kluivert, Tomasson, Viduka, Owen etc, etc have all failed to make the grade.

The CF is a strange animal, a predator who can eat but will also be eaten alive, if he shows any kind of hesitation.

Apart from Ronaldo and a couple others, anyone (or many) could fail here or elsewhere.

E.g. Falcao: a top drawer player who won’t make it at Chelsea. Like Shevchenko before him. And a Torres guy too.

  • 23 tweeds // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:21 AM

Austin would be a great signing ,but there’s no doubt that people on this site would complain if we signed Messi

  • 24 Lee Dodd // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:22 AM

Look Lee charnley and The rest will be on holiday so that is why we ont sign anyone apartfrom players like Riviere that are middle of teh roadthat no one wants really !!!! We have a Chance NOW Bloody Take It ya Pratts !!!!!

  • 25 G peart 83 // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:23 AM

What is M Williamson still doing at the club

  • 26 The overrated Frenchman // Jun 14, 2015 at 10:26 AM

The difference with a player like Austin is that I think he would knuckle down and give 100% every game. We have never had that from Ba, Remy or Cisse, although technically they may be better players.

  • 27 Toontaff // Jun 14, 2015 at 9:59 PM

Personally if we get Austin a good attacking midfielder and a quality ch zendon and black coaching add to what we got and not too many injuries we will be challenging top 4
