Newcastle In Bid For Top Bundesliga Striker

11:05 pm, Sunday, June 14th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 135 Comments

Newcastle have been linked with a lot of strikers over the last few days,  and they include QPR’s 25 year-old Charlie Austin, West Brom’s 21 year-old Saido Berahino, 21 year-old Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford and 22 year-old Malaga striker Juanmi.

Charlie Austin seems to be Newcastle’s number one striker target, but it’s hard to know who would be next in line – but according to the Mirror Newcastle have made a bid of £9M for Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost – all 6’5″ of him – and they have offered him a four year deal.

bas dost wolfsburg

Bas Dost – Newcastle have reportedly bid £9M

Dost had a great second half to the season with 20 goals in 36 total appearances for his club, after he had started the season as their third choice striker, and his goals powered Wolfsburg into the runners-up position in the Bundesliga behind only Bayern Munich.

The news in the Mirror is that we are in with a £9M bid for the Dutch International – and that seems a decent bid for a player who still has two years left on his contract at Wolfsburg.

Steve McClaren was the Wolfsburg manager for seven months in 2011 after leaving FC Twente, after the club had just won their first ever Dutch Championship,  but Bas Dost didn’t join from Heerenveen until the summer of 2012.

There’s still plenty of time in the transfer window of course, and not much transfer business has been conducted this summer, but it’s important Newcastle get some players in over the next couple of weeks – and maybe one of them will be Bas Dost.

We wouldn’t be surprised if the news in the Mirror is accurate.

Comments welcome.

    I wouldn’t call 9 million Big!!

    Blofal

Bas offers nothing and would probably fail at NUFC and the PL itself.

If we do sign him don’t get your hopes up

  • 3 banjax // Jun 14, 2015 at 11:11 PM

This rumour seems to be the most likely of all at the moment. Bad Dost will be a welcome addition to a (hopefully) new strike force at Newcastle. The only problem is that his name is a Dyslexic nightmare – dosh boch !

  • 4 sks_toon // Jun 14, 2015 at 11:12 PM

If we get him and Austin we are set upfront for a long time knock on wood! Then we need at least 2 CBs, I think we can get by on our MFs this year if we get 2 strikers and 2 CBs. Next year we can concentrate on MFs if there is a need.

  • 5 NezzaNUFC // Jun 14, 2015 at 11:13 PM

New castle will be looking for the cheapest option for the striker department.

We have 4 strikers Cisse, Gouffran, Perez and Rive, no doubt SM will have a lonely striker up top so why go for another striker?

PS. See told you – even the correction thingy got it wrong !

This is very possible player has insurances for both Wolfsburg and nufc regarding his knees had lots of issues in the past

  • 8 Belfast // Jun 14, 2015 at 11:15 PM

I really can’t see them paying 15 million for Austin or anybody else for that matter.

10 million max I reckon. Dost for 9 million sounds more believable.

I hope I’m wrong because you won’t get any top players for 10 and under.

Here we go. We’re gonna be linked with every man and his dog from now until the season starts.

He seems to be another Cisse. Lots of tap ins from being in the right place at the right time. No contribution in build up play.

Second article is pretty much just waffle but the first article is interesting. I’ve seen quite a bit of german football last season but not too much of Wolfsburg if I’m honest. With dost he is a confidence player and is heavily reliant on service. Saying that his finishing is great and he comes alive in the 18 yard box.

  • 23 jane // Jun 14, 2015 at 11:35 PM

might not do well in his first season if he comes, looking at his scoring stats for the 3 clubs he spent more than 1 season with he didn’t score many in his first season(s) but scored a lot in his last season with them. maybe he likes to make a move after a good season.

    NezzaNUFC
I would say CB is more important than wingers at the moment, because our defense is horrendous. If we get 2 CBs and get Jamal as well, I think we would get a much better showing out of Krul and actually have more of a chance to win games than if we forget about our defense.

  • 25 Our Toon // Jun 15, 2015 at 12:03 AM

    Blofal & Nezza

Tell me exactly what you are looking for in a striker, for me all that matters is goals. You can have the best hold up play in the world, great passer of the ball, excellent team player but the most important attribute for a striker is goals. I couldn’t give a toss all he knows is where the goal is…..that’s what we need.

Riviere does all the things Cisse can’t do, cisse does the important thing that Riviere will never be able to do…..score goals!! Give me a goalscorer any day of the week over a “team build up playing striker”

I think Collocini and S Taylor are possibly a top eight CB pairing, but Lascelles, Dummett and Good, doubtful to put it mildly. It would appear patently ridiculous to add a player like Chester to that lot. Particularly after the season we’ve just endured. I can’t believe it, and expect us to sign a player of more proven quality, if probably, from one of the lesser leagues in Europe.

S.Taylor is injury prone. Never finished a season. And he always gets e injury wen we really need him.

The man we need is Ryan Shawcross.

Add him to Colo and we have a top six pairing.

Still, an interesting read, Although you might think written largely in a miff about the exclusive nature of Newcastle’s attitude to the press.

  • 36 Blofal // Jun 15, 2015 at 12:35 AM

    @Our TOON,

I want a version of Riviere that doesn’t fall over every time he shoots. He is brilliant at hold up play and getting into the right positions but he just can’t score.

For a striker like Cisse or Bas Dost we need attacking wingers and midfielders putting chances on a plate for them. I’m happy with having that kind of striker if the rest of our team is good enough. But our players aren’t good enough at the moment and I’m not sure we’ll bring in the required players.

Cisse and Ba went nuts when Cabaye, Jonas, Ben Arfa and to some extent Raylor were all in blistering form feeding the pipeline.

At first glance Perez, Sissoko, Cabella and De Jong should be better at supplying a striker but it didn’t happen last year (thanks Cisse for being suspended). Maybe they are? We’ll soon find out.

  • 37 KevinLee // Jun 15, 2015 at 12:42 AM

9M is big money? What a joke

  • 38 Our Toon // Jun 15, 2015 at 1:00 AM

    Blofal

There aren’t many strikers around in world football who can do what you require from a forward. More importantly there isn’t one for the market value that we look at. Ideally in a dream world I’d want a Benteke, Lukaku or Bony type of forward. A brute that’s strong on in all aspects but we won’t pay for someone like that.

Cisse didn’t do to bad last season considering he had 1 knee and as you say….limited service, still finished with a higher minutes to goals ratio than any of the strikers we are apparently after.

  • 39 Our Toon // Jun 15, 2015 at 1:02 AM

    Kevin Lee

9m quid under MA is a heck of alot money for 1 player, where have you been for the past 8 or 9 years? Think cisse is the only one we spent thay kind of money on under MA, apparently Cabella was 7m with add ons though!! 9m is nothing for others but indeed for us under this goon it’s big

  • 40 sickandtired // Jun 15, 2015 at 1:13 AM

Cheaper than Austin, Berahino, or even Bamford. Foreign and a chance of making a buck or two on him quickly (next Summer).
Perfect for the Ashley model. Some people really believe things are going to be different?
    Oh my.

  • 41 expatmag // Jun 15, 2015 at 1:20 AM

Ashley’s latest letter to season ticket holders smacks of desperation.

My advice to would be fans forum is to request the Evening chronicle to publish a cleverely worded reply to Ashley stating that season ticket customers MAY return once he provides them with a value for money service which would mean full support for the Head Coach in the appointments of his preferred staff and the full release of monies for the purchase of players that match the ambitions and requests of Newcastle United customers.

  • 42 Blofal // Jun 15, 2015 at 1:23 AM

    Our Toon,

That’s the heartbreaking thing. We could have had Bony. They do exist it’s just the club has never been willing to stretch the finances just that little bit for the quality.

You’re right Benteke, Bony or Lukaku would have be perfect.

“S.Taylor is injury prone. Never finished a season”

And next season he’ll go one better by not starting one!

I don’t know if anyone else has pointed this out, but according to the PhysioRoom website he’s not due to return from injury until Oct 15, so we can probably write off most of the 1st half of the season while he gets himself match fit. Never mind, this time next year (when his contract runs out) we’ll finally be rid of him.

    “And Don’t Sign Carroll”

  • 49 N1CK06 // Jun 15, 2015 at 3:46 AM

Every new link I see I’m more convinced we are (as usual) being taken on a ride and nothing is going to change – regardless of the “new” football board and manager.

9m for a striker to “bolt the horse to the cart”? That’s what Cisse cost in 2012. Cabella last year was 8m, and Riviere 6.3m. We still aren’t even looking at bolts, instead we are trying to fasten the cart to the horse with sticky tape.

These recent links show we are not looking and spending anything more than what we would’ve spent in the previous transfer windows. We continue to be trying to score budget deals for <10m.

If we are apparently looking for "top strikers" and "big spending" like Ed continues to say we are, wouldn't you think there would be reports of some more expensive signings? i.e. in the ~20m range or even higher?! And actual bids not just links or BS reports..

You actually don’t have to play the famous British hoof-ball just because you have a targetman kind of forward!

You can actually play a very effective “Total football” with such a player if he can hold up the ball.

Never really thought it was the Carroll kind of player that was our Achilles heal 😉 it was the whole concept of our play that was in question.

I would imagine SM will bring something different, but I’ll have to see it with my own eyes first.

Never believe all that you read, Newcastle never give any information away about our transfers, or anything else for that matter, the whole club is bound in secrecy and if something does slip out from an inside source it’s likely to be Bishop up to his PR tricks.

Newcastle as they always do will start with the lowest bid and as said by Ashley try to get the best value pound for pound.

We lose out on so many targets this way, simply because we won’t go the extra million.

To be fair, if we ignore all the paper talk and web stories, and instead concentrate on not who we can afford to buy but who we will afford to buy we would be much nearer the mark.

The club has said nothing about us signing any top players, in fact they have said nothing period.

The second extension and letter for season ticket sales tells it’s own story, and will keep us linked with good players for another couple of weeks, once enough of the gullible have bought those tickets to satisfy the greed of the club owner signings will be made.

Most likely those signings will be for little or unheard of players who the club will tell us have great potential and are expected to set the premier league afire with their undoubted talent.

    More of the same expected.

I think Dost is a Crouch kind of player can play in any style of play.

  • 94 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:26 AM

if we ignore all the paper talk we’d have nowt to talk about lol

  • 95 Ron Knee // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:29 AM

Stop moaning, Stan. With McClaren in charge, we could be back on track for mid-table mediocrity!

Lets wait for e coaching team to be announced.

Lets wait for the board to operate for e summer and wait for recruitment. If we get 6 players in e positions we need to recruit even if its not a big name. I didn’t know Cabaye, Bony, Cisse, Perez when they came and they did e job.

    Lets wait

  • 98 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:32 AM

We’ve been waiting for 8 years

  • 99 expatmag // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:33 AM

Before we buy, I am pretty damn sure they will want to get rid of a few first.

We have had 8 players out on loan and about 4 on season ending long term injuries.

Assessments will have to be made on who they want to keep and who will be fit.

Will McLaren see something in Marveaux ?

Will Taylor Haidara Elliott Tiote be fit for the start of the season?

Will the likes of Bigi Ferguson and Vuckic give McLaren food for thought?

Are Lascelles and Darlow good enough to make the step up?

  • 100 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:33 AM

  • 101 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:33 AM

will die for the toon army

Eight long years of waiting mate, eight years of same old same old.

I allowed a little optimism to creep in, thinking that change was in the air, but reality has come back, the same paths are being followed, and the is nothing positive coming from the club.

Eight years will soon be nine years, and some of us will still be waiting.

  • 104 stan anderson // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:36 AM

That would be Heaven Ron Knee haha,

  • 105 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:38 AM

Can’t have been that good then Tsunki 😉

  • 106 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:39 AM

I’m sure he went to a Welsh team which must not be mentioned under any circumstances

  • 107 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:41 AM

Putting on my pessimistic head – Can’t see us signing Austin – cost to much more likely Bos and Carroll making a 6ft 4 strike force and getting in high crosses and maybe scoring from a corner.

  • 108 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:42 AM

Charlie it’d be tallest strikeforce in prem

  • 109 The overrated Frenchman // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:43 AM

From what I’ve seen of Dost – all on TV, but plenty of games – he is more one-dimensional than Crouch. Makes no chances for himself, but knows where to be and can finish. The biggest thing with him is that he needs others to tee him up, particularly with crosses, and on exposed form we don’t have the players to do that. Obertan? Ameobi? Don’t think so. Maybe Aarons, but he’s played about five minutes of football so who knows. Dost will be a waste of money unless we find players who can feed him the chances.

  • 110 Ron Knee // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:43 AM

    Heaven for Fatso.

  • 111 firebug666 // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:47 AM

Dost and Carroll, lmao; heading the ball in the box…”to me to you to me to you”.

  • 112 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:48 AM

    Toon from Leeds
    Dost/Carroll
Might work but you would need a fox in the box like Keegan was with Toshack or my younger days watching the TOON with the Mighty WYN DAVIES and Bryan POP Robson

  • 113 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:51 AM

    TooninLeeds
would Cisse work as the fox in the box with Dost and Carroll – only asking the question??

  • 118 JamesToon // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:57 AM

    Signing a striker-I’d like any 2 from these 5:
    Charlie Austin
    Aleksander Mitrovic
    Saido Berahino
    Andy Carroll
    Loïc Rémy
We need a target man and someone to poach/get in behind with pace.

Bas dost could be a good target man considering he’s 6ft5 but would he be able to work as a lone striker?

  • 119 firebug666 // Jun 15, 2015 at 7:59 AM

Remie Streete will be signing for his new club this afternoon.

  • 124 The overrated Frenchman // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:14 AM

Dost is not a target man, and I don’t think he’s quite 6’5″ just quietly.

  • 125 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:14 AM

I remember all the hype there were about this kid

  • 126 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:15 AM

The overrated Frenchman…depends on your definition of a targetman

  • 127 firebug666 // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:16 AM

    jesper

Aye it’s a shame, a lot of these players showed promise, I blame the dinosaur coaching, none of our coaches ever seemed to be able to utilise the strengths of the individual, and want to try and mould them into something there not.

  • 128 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:21 AM

firebug…I am with on that one mate. Maybe not everyone had the mentality to make, but no one except one or two have made the grade at Newcastle!

  • 130 The overrated Frenchman // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:24 AM

A target man makes chances for others doesn’t he? Back to the goal, hold up the ball, cushioned headers etc. That’s not how Dost plays.

  • 131 Charlie in the Gallowgate // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:24 AM

Maybe it will change when McClaren brings in his own backroom staff of coaches, fitness coaches the bloody lot needs changing. May take time but hopefully it will work through time

  • 132 dannitoon // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:26 AM

Big bid?? £9m hahaha id cost that nowadays… bet he goes to dortmund or gladbach? We will get someone from Derby

  • 133 The overrated Frenchman // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:27 AM

Tsunki – Bony has only scored one goal less for us than Riviere…

  • 134 dannitoon // Jun 15, 2015 at 8:30 AM

Remember we have “when fit” one of how best creative footballers in SDJ….. he’s the Dutch Pedro

  • 135 GeordieGadie // Jun 16, 2015 at 3:04 AM

There’s noway Mash will spend, get over it.
It’s only a game of throwing names that seem realistic within our mediocre budget 9~10m so we go and buy season tickets.
Once that’s sorted, we will get a wholesale punch of unknowns as in the Goofy and co group when they came only to keep us in the prem league.
Gone are the days when we used to bring in big Al, Beardsley and that class and we now have to do with this selection of players.
Only thing that makes me happy is that aubameyang who didn’t chose us in hope of CL football has now a year playing only in the Kraut league hahahaha
