Newcastle Have No Chance Of Signing This International Defender

10:47 pm, Thursday, June 18th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 120 Comments

Newcastle have been linked with Monaco center-back Aymen Abdennour, who has a contract at Monaco though the summer of 2019 and we have been interested in the player for the last six months.

Aymen Abdennour +Monaco+v+Arsenal+ZTlKTNHwjWJl

Aymen Abdennour – Monaco center-back

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are the other two Premier League clubs said to be interested in Aymen with interest also from PSG in France.

Abdennour’s agent was busy last month trying to shop his client around for a possible new deal – which would earn his agent Abdelkader Jilani some big money.

This is some of what Jilani said:

Given the season that Aymen had, there is interest from all over the world. We have received calls from clubs and sporting directors, but for now nothing [has been decided].

“Clubs like Valencia, Newcastle, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Wolfsburg have called. We have received concrete offers from these teams, and they are really interested in Aymen.”

It’s true that Newcastle were interested in the player in late April, but at that time there was a French report that Newcastle approached the player.

But his agent Abdelkader Jilani quickly turned Newcastle down.

The main reason for that was the player only wants to leave Monaco to join a club that plays regularly in the Champions League, and you can hardly blame him for that.

Newcastle have never been in the Champions League since 2003 when the great Sir Bobby Robson was our manager, and even Tottenham have only a small chance of signing him, so Arsenal are definitely in the lead to sign him.

Aymen Abdennour signed on for Monaco only last summer, and he had an excellent first season at the Principality playing 26 times for the French club with one goal.

Monaco finished 3rd top of the French League on 71 points,  and therefore qualify for the Champions League.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

We can…and do complain about our beloved club but I’ve supported this beautiful club since 1966 I am now 60yrs young and have been through the Westwood and shepherd yrs…..dont forget this was the guy who sacked rhe great sir B Robson for finishing 5th in one year…anyway folks…I am black and white through and through. .but will always love banter with the makems without hating them or the end of the day its only sport and life is much more important. .but as liberal as ive learend to become. ..and be more understanding of other people’s views. .this man? Mr Ashley. bleeding my beautiful club dry…..I’m close to tears writing this….but to my generation we speak as we find…he is no good for the club I live and breath this great club.. I may be treading over old ground but I’m hoping this message might get through to someone who can do something and get this beautiful club to where it expects to be…..god bless the mags xxx

  • 30 jimmysmith // Jun 19, 2015 at 12:13 AM

We wouldn’t be in this mess, if Ashley had been prepared to push the boat out just that little bit farther on one key player, once each close season. Now of course, we need three or four of them, coinciding with his claim that we are now going to make our own luck, and on top of the usual canny acquisitions, and when the long suffering fans eventually reach the end of their once considerable tether and kick up an almighty stink, because the deals don’t quite get done, and in the knowledge that deals are actually not easy to get done, he’ll doubtless privately blame us for being unreasonable, and really believe it, in preference to simply being realistic about what it takes. Can’t see him wriggling out of it though, not at this stage, it’s either stump up or get considerable grief, at least you’d sincerely hope so.

  • 33 swemag // Jun 19, 2015 at 12:23 AM

To be honest some of the prices being quoted are rediculous, they are mentioning 20 million for the Watford guy, honestly, he has never played a game in the first league.
Bas Doost, if 9 million is a true figure sounds like good value for money.
Further the idea of buying brittish is crap. Overpriced and i have no idea why the club would change that policy.

  • 34 jimmysmith // Jun 19, 2015 at 12:30 AM

Some of the figures are ridiculous, but 15 million for Austin surely isn’t. He really did look good in a comically bad side, and has pretty much everything you might want from a centre forward. Ashley should intervene, and get this guy in, now.

  • 35 lesh // Jun 19, 2015 at 12:37 AM

Now this is a real non-story.

  • 36 Sydney Toon // Jun 19, 2015 at 12:42 AM

I think the 15m fee for Austin is over the top, obviously QPR sense West Ham and Liverpool sniffing around and they have been known to spend large amounts on one player, not to mention cashing in on their prize asset, I think if we paid 5m more than what we value him, that may affect bringing in another 1-2 players. There has to be a point where getting value from whatever our transfer kitty is, has to be more important than blowing it on 1 player. And I highly doubt that we will get any reasonable value from our own players we sell, it will be a “Fire” Sale for sure, with exception of Sissoko.
So if we pull out of a move for Austin because its above what we intend to pay, and we end up bringing in Bas Dost or Demba Ba for much less then I will support that, because it gives us flexibility in what we also need in terms of squad depth.

  • 37 KevinLee // Jun 19, 2015 at 12:45 AM

No Money No Chance, Fat Mike

  • 38 jimmysmith // Jun 19, 2015 at 12:52 AM

15 million isn’t massive money in this market for a centre forward. The TV money will naturally push up prices, and frankly if we don’t get a twenty goal striker in, we’re no hope. By all means, bring in Dost, even sell Cisse to do it, but lets also bring in a good young centre forward, with strength and skill who has shown he knows how to find the back of the net.

  • 39 Sazzer // Jun 19, 2015 at 1:15 AM

Because QPR had a defence that even Willo would improve.

  • 40 Magpie Season // Jun 19, 2015 at 1:22 AM

Still can’t believe Swansea got Ayew.

I mean, I knew we were not going to sign him but to beaten by Swansea, no disrespect to the club, just disappoints me.

  • 41 swemag // Jun 19, 2015 at 1:29 AM

We did not try to sign Ayew, some rumours he has an attitude problem.
Further Gignac in Marseille said that – ‘Ayew and his broader should f**k off somewhere else’ as they just kept on moaning all the time.
I think it was the right decision if that is correct.

And about Austin, yes, 15 million is a price that seems more and more reasonable. Further, the TV money does drive prices up.

  • 42 swemag // Jun 19, 2015 at 1:30 AM

    * that should be Ayew and his brother.

  • 50 Magpie Season // Jun 19, 2015 at 2:35 AM

With the tv money raising up prices, yes that is true, yet there are always premier league clubs who find players on a bargain.

The young striker from Malaga, Juanmi, looks a good bargain deal for Southampton.

Frankly, I don’t expect us paying over 10mil for any one player, not in McClaren’s first season anyway. The money I’m referring to however is the transfer fee that is paid to the club. As there will be other expenses obviously.

  • 51 Magpie Season // Jun 19, 2015 at 2:37 AM

How many players have we signed for over 10 million pounds since Ashley has been here?

    1. Coloccini – 10 mil.

It’s difficult to say if Austin just looked good because more or less everyone looked bad at QPR. There’s no denying he scored some goals, but I have seen a one season PL wonder before to not get overly excited just like that.

I would think big foreign clubs will be over QPR if £15M really is a bargain price. As of now the only clubs being linked are the usual suspects when it comes to over paying massively!

  • 59 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jun 19, 2015 at 4:49 AM

    *all over

  • 60 Sydney Toon // Jun 19, 2015 at 5:11 AM

Canny – It’s Ed’s new way of optimism apparently, starting to get really sick of it.

Jesper – I agree with you, Austin has been in the lower leagues and although scored a good amount of goals, will he be able to back that up. he is a proven scorer but for 15m, I would baulk at that for sure. Still, I believe it will end up being lower than 15m, as Austin im sure will manufacture a move away from QPR when he returns from his honeymoon.
On the other hand, Bas Dost is apparently close to being secured, which should kill the Carroll rumours and at 8m presents great value for a player that would blend very well with McClarens playing style.

  • 61 Canny in Canberra // Jun 19, 2015 at 5:43 AM

Sydney – Telling us we may be able to sign is Optomism. Telling us who we haven’t got a hope in getting is just mean!!

  • 62 Jail for Ashley // Jun 19, 2015 at 5:47 AM

So we weren’t after Ayew because of his attitude, mmm interesting. It didn’t stop us signing HBA, Cabaye or offering Ranger a deal. The fact Gosling and Colback were signed after running their contracts down and upsetting their parent clubs didn’t seem to be a hinderance either. No swemag, it seems like attitude isn’t an issue at all if a bargain is to be had. Sissoko, exemplary !

Here’s part of the article Jail mentioned:

“Dutch ace Zenden is assessing his options and has been linked with a return to Liverpool, but won’t be reunited with McClaren who managed him at Boro.

McClaren is making sure he gets the right mix behind the scenes. Paul Simpson, his No 2 at Derby County, and Steve Black have been linked with roles.

Newcastle says there is nothing close on the transfer front despite admitting they wanted momentum after appointing their new boss.”

    More cheery news!

  • 76 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 6:42 AM

All getting a bit repetitive now. Ignoring transfers for a moment, surely the more worrying item on the agenda is that according to our ‘preferred media partner’ is that we have approached two up and coming coaches for the assistants role, and both have said no. Hardly encouraging stuff in the slightest, with just over a week till pre season begins, we should have coaching staff in place so they can establish the training and development plan that will be actioned once players are back.

I am beginning to think that we will maybe see one or two specialists come in, and then a few promotions from within to compete the staff. Much easier and cheaper to bring in coaches at the younger age groups.

Gary White’s star continues to rise as well. (For those who are newish, I harped on about him for a long time as an ideal candidate for coming to NUFC). Developed a great team spirit with Guam and they are playing good football, now at their highest national ranking (the third national team he has achieved it with) and the bloke is still just 40. Could still be an ideal assistant to McClaren, but highly unlikely he would ditch Guam at this stage given his commitment to development of players and teams.

  • 77 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 6:47 AM

I see Saints have got in Soares and West Ham have added Payet – another of our alleged long term targets – to their squad.

Transfers are picking up pace at the minute, and we have nothing close, despite needing serious work done to a squad low on confidence and options.

  • 78 firebug666 // Jun 19, 2015 at 6:55 AM

Well this is what happens when you have a greedy fat tw@ running a club on a shoestring, and with no ambition.

My guess is the already knew that the clubs stock had fallen so far that no players would be interested in joining us, hence Mike’s TV waffle about wanting to win something.

The massive changes talked about, have nothing to do with a change of heart by the fat man, it’s simply a case of trying to survive to get that extra bonus (TV money).

Too little too late imo, the damage has already been done, we are now a club that everyone steers clear of, eight years in decline, the fat man’s profits were rising for SD etc, but the club reputation was sacrificed to make that happen.

It’s going to take many years of rebuilding just to get the clubs reputation back, but I don’t see that happening under the present regime.

There was a time when backroom staff would have been cuing up to join Newcastle, and players would have been pushing their agents in our direction, but those days are long gone, sad but true, we are no longer an attractive prospect.

    Ashley Out!

  • 79 Jail for Ashley // Jun 19, 2015 at 6:56 AM

I don’t think this incentive bonus is everyones cup of tea, according to Joey Barton in that interview, all the senior players refused to sign it at the time. Given our recent history of not buying but selling players you could hardly blame someone for not relying on Charnleys word when negotiating your contract.

  • 80 Ron Knee // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:01 AM

According to The Mail, “Sports Direct pays its executives relatively low base salaries bumped up by performance related share bonuses,”

Presumably, this is the same model that Charmless is applying at SJP.

this is Marko Pjaca, Croatian winger…this type of winger we need

  • 83 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:05 AM

It depends on the incentive scheme I guess. Decent wages allied to a realistic bonus scheme make good sense, and are an incentive to players.

But as I said a few days ago, if the club have set the bonuses at a level of qualifying for Europe and/or winning a trophy then the only way that acts as an incentive is if the club act and bring in players capable. If the club offer that bonus scheme to a squad that clearly can’t achieve that, then there is no incentive.

Agents are rightly going to be sceptical about any contract with a poor to average basic but high bonuses if they don’t see a club achieving them. I guess the only way to convince them that they are aiming for success is to get a group of player in the room signing at the same time, otherwise why would you trust anything the club have said?

SDJ came out last summer and said he was sold the club on a push for Europe, look how that turned out….

  • 84 Ron Knee // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:07 AM

Sounds brilliant. No wonder there’s queues out the door made up of quality players and coaches to sign on the dotted line with us.

It’s not the slugs idea either. Oh no. Penfold just came up with a similar structure to SD way all by himself. Ya know, because the slug doesn’t get involved with football matters. No sir.

  • 86 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:11 AM

    Ron Knee,
That works for store managers, and employees on £50k a year, but when you are talking to elite footballers who can command upwards of that in a week then it isn’t as much of an incentive. A player like Austin could probably command up to £80k a week in wages, say we are offering an highly incentivised package with a low average basic.

Example, say we offer Charlie £50k a week, instead of West Ham, Liverpool or Chelsea who would likely be okay paying the £80k, then Austin would need a minimum bonus of 1.5million just to break-even. Not to mention having to hit targets that are, looking at the current squad, unrealistic. No chance.

  • 87 Jail for Ashley // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:11 AM

I assume Carr has to make the initial sales pitch to the prospective player.

  • 94 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:23 AM

It depends on what you class a decent wage. Marveaux is on around £40k a week allegedly, Saylor similar. For what they offer they are overpaid.

I don’t think we pay bad wages, we just don’t pay the top end, which means you always end up with average players but on the wages that they should be or higher. If they are to become ambitious then the wage structure needs to change to allow for wages of up to £100k. That is probably a realistic limit for a Prem club of our standing. Regular european football and trophies would see that increase.

Take Colo out, and the kids, and you could probably cover the rest of the squad with wages between £20k and £50k. Realistically, not a single one of them has shown to be worth anymore than that. Some not even….

  • 95 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:26 AM

    Ron Knee,
I’d assume that Carr makes the initial contact, then a combination of Irving, Carr and Charnley would have met up with him subsequently. Carr would probably only ask of interest, and whether they would be willing to sit and discuss the vision. Pardew could well have been involved.

We all said Pardew had little to no say in transfers, but it would appear that he is still interested in similar targets, and players we bought so it begs the question as to whether he was more involved than we thought.

  • 96 Jail for Ashley // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:29 AM

I don’t know enough about wage structures at football clubs to say to much, but ours does seem restrictive when we wouldn’t pay Remy or Ba the 80K a week they could get at a lot of others clubs, some of them not the 18th richest club in the world.

  • 97 Ron Knee // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:31 AM

With Charnley choreographing the process, presumably.

  • 98 Toonfan8 // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:34 AM

sell Tiote, Sissoko and bring Imbula, van Ginkel…both great young players, team players with great physique, what we need in centre of the park…and bring one young winger like Pjaca, Krej?i quick players, with great movement…and Austin upfront and one CB….we always talk how good players we have in CM, but they arent good enough, there are men who win you matches…and we need great quality there….looks good…..
    janmaat,van dijk,colo,haidara
    ……van ginkel…..imbula……..
power and brain in the centre and quick in winger positions…that is what modern footbal require

  • 99 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:36 AM

    Ron Knee,
    All dancing to Ashley’s tune.

  • 100 Jail for Ashley // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:38 AM

    Ron Knee,
It’s maddening, it is a completely flawed set up from top to bottom being fuelled from that one season of success where we finished fifth. From a club that supposedly thinks long term long term, no thought at all was or has been put into the fact that if you put unknowns on long term contracts and sell the only decent ones you will eventually end up with a squad full of duffers.

  • 101 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:38 AM

Some clubs will pay wages they can’t realistically afford (QPR) but given our finances, revenues and fan base we should be capable of paying up to that for the higher quality players. I’m not saying just cave to high demands, but there is a rigidity to our policy which might work in other job markets, but doesn’t when talking about elite level footballers.

  • 102 Toonfan8 // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:39 AM

that team would play great football…
    van dijk 10, van ginkel 10, imbula 15, austin 15, krejci 6….
sell: tiote 6, sissoko 15, cisse 10….net spend 25M and would improve us much, Tiote isnt that good, not good with ball and we cant afford to have that type in CM, Austin better in all round play and you need that if you play on one striker, Sissoko always want to do things alone and you need team players and always talking about other team and about how he will be in better team one day….

  • 103 Jail for Ashley // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:40 AM

As much as I can’t stand the sight of Churnley and his ghost written statements, to much blame is put on him not signing players.

  • 104 Ron Knee // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:41 AM

Charnley comes across as a subservient beta male. Perhaps if we had a Managing Director with a stronger personality he would make Fatso see some sense.

  • 105 Average_Contents // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:42 AM

    No lil.

The slug has no say whatsoever. Much like Kim Jong-un doesn’t have a say running North Korea. No. It’s his lieutenants.

Ran just like SD. Coincidence or what.

  • 106 mickalfas // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:47 AM

After last season how can they just let things stay the same
If there is one club that neexo investment in the premiership its us
Can’t even sort out the coaching staff ffs
    It beggars belief
Surely they dont need SM to assess the squad ,its obvious that we need the defence sorted immediately
What a joke we are ,its getting embarrassing to say you follow NUFC,and mates feel pity and hope you stay up ffs,the season hasn’t started yet !!

  • 107 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:48 AM

Does anyone on here watch a lot of Scottish football? Is Van Dijk really that good? He wasn’t in the World Cup squad for Holland last year. I’ve seen him a few times for Celtic, but he is never a stand out, and let’s face it, Boumsong looked very good up in a dominant Scottish team. Celtic haven’t even had the threat of a strong Rangers to contest with.

How many strikers from the SPL could get in an EPL team often? I would imagine not many. Gary Caldwell was a defensive force to be reckoned with north of the border, but wasn’t that great at Wigan. He may well be very good, but at £10million I’d probably look elsewhere.

  • 108 sing in the corner // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:48 AM

Regarding your earlier post can you explain to me your implication that Gosling and Colback had bad attitudes because they ‘ran their contracts down’. ie. wouldn’t sign for their current clubs at the time on the terms they were offered.

  • 109 Jail for Ashley // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:49 AM

Kim Il Jung is oblivious to his people’s suffering, they shoot a top ranking official every now and then to prove this.

  • 110 Slank // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:51 AM

    Lil @ 94

Harry Kane, possibly the next England centre forward, is reportedly on only (!) £35000 a week at Spurs.

There appears to be huge differences in wage levels in the Premiership. It has been said that Everton were (or still are) one of the highest payers in the league even though they don’t appear to have a great deal of wealth but they have sensible management unlike QPR.

  • 111 JamesToon // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:51 AM

I haven’t seen him play very many times but very comfortable with the ball at his feet, good eye for a pass and good free kicks just don’t really know what his defending is like

  • 112 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:52 AM

Last summer Charnley managed to sign more players in one window then we had done in any window since before the relegation season. This thing about him not getting players is nonsense. The fact we had to lower the standards of our targets, and who the targets ended up being should not be foisted on Charnley’s shoulders alone.

Ashley sets the financial parameters that meant we had to shop in the discount store, and Carr provides the names. Charnley just does as he is told.

Of course, my bad. Ashley takes the blame on his shoulders 30seconds before declaring he has nothing to do with the football side.

  • 113 lochinvar // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:53 AM

Harry Kane says he is flattered by Manchester United’s interest in him but adds that he fully intends to start the new season at Tottenham Hotspur.

Nothing like leaving the door open in case it all goes wrong at Spurs. Why not cheer him up with a bid from tbe Toon to make him feel wanted or a deal to bring him in at the start of the January transfer window.

    Go Mikey go .

  • 115 Jail for Ashley // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:54 AM

It is a well known fact that Gosling and Colback caused a lot of animosity at their respective clubs, it takes a different kind of attitude to do that ie Raheem Sterling.

  • 116 Average_Contents // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:54 AM

“Behind the scenes we are working very, very hard to make sure we are ready for the new season”

Thanks shteve. That’s good to know.

Pretty sure that’s been the standard line of every manager who’s worked for the slug come the summer transfer window. Fcuking guff. Again.

  • 117 sing in the corner // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:55 AM

I think it would be a big step up for Van Dijk from what I’ve seen of him and Scottish football recently. Just a question…how come toon fans aren’t clamouring for Vuckic to be howked back into our squad given he had a fabulous season at Rangers, in a very average league obviously. But not much more so than the scots prem where Van Dijk was comfy in the best team. I have always rated Vuckic and think SM would only bring him on further. But he’s on every know it all’s sell list.

  • 118 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 19, 2015 at 7:58 AM

The figure I read was £45k a week for Kane, but Spurs were reasonably savvy in that they negotiated that new deal back in Feb. If they were trying to strike the same deal now, I imagine his agent, bearing in mind interest from other clubs, would be looking at far higher.

According to the figures released by clubs for 13/14, Everton were the 11th highest paying club, with us 7th. Our problem is we have too many mediocre players getting better wages than they should. If Ashley wanted pound for pound value, he isn’t getting it.

  • 119 Jib // Jun 19, 2015 at 8:05 AM

    Can I just say something
It seems so blindingly obvious it should not have to be said , however here goes.
Everyone acknowledges that SM has not even met the players yet , that starts happening on Monday.
Why on earth should the club be thinking about transfers (IN or OUT) when he has not even taken a training session yet.
Before the window closes the club has a friendly against the Heed , a mini tour of the USA then , friendlies against York , Sheffield Utd , and Borrussia Moenchengladbach ,then, 4 Premier League games. That is quite a raft of games to assess our playing needs and requirements.
EPL clubs are lucky in that its the Euro nations next Summer so it’s an early start to
    the season.
Comparing us to Swansea or Liverpool and their transfers is just silly. Both have incumbent managers (Garry Monk has been at Swansea as player ,captain ,and manager for 11 years) ,who have probably known since the Spring what they require , SM has been here 5 minutes , get real everyone.

  • 120 Moonraker15 // Jun 19, 2015 at 8:21 AM

Your story may as well be “toon have no chance of signing Messi”. Why report non – stories?

Jib, agreed McClaren doesn’t yet know his squad, but he must know we need a striker and a CB at the very minimum and the signs are that we are going to struggle to get back where we were as an attractive club for top players.
