The Star is reporting that Newcastle United are considering a move for former central midifleder Yohan Cabaye, and that we will try to bring him on loan to Newcastle for next season.
Yohan could be a decent loan signing for us, but maybe PSG would prefer a permanent deal this summer for the 38 times capped French International.
Yohan Cabaye – Newcastle trying for loan deal
It’s been a terrible move for Yohan since he left Newcastle eighteen months ago, and he’s found it difficult to get a starting place at PSG but he pushed for the move away from the north-east once PSG came after him, but his career has gone backwards ever since.
It seems that Newcastle have been in contact with the players’ agents and talks are not at an advacned stage.
It would cost Newcastle around £2.5M for the loan deal and Newcastle want some help with what are now his huge wages at £85K/week.
There are other clubs after Yohan who want a permanent deal such as West Ham and Crystal Palace, so we’d be surprised if Newcastle could get the loan deal agreed with PSG.
West Ham would seem like a good option for him, with PSG wanting around £11M for Yohan, which is still high given he’s 29, but he has shown he can play well in the Premier League at Newcastle.
While on Tyneside for two and a half seasons he scored 18 goals in 93 appearances, and in Paris he’s played 53 times with 3 goals.
We’d be very surprised if Yohan Cabaye ends up at Newcastle on loan next season.
What do you think?

Comment #1Comrades take a deep breath. We haven’t failed to do anything yet, you don’t know what negotiations are at whatever stage. ? Frutration…yes. But looking at other clubs who has signed more than the odd player at present? There hasn’t been a stampede of deals done up to now. I am also not hugely optimistic based on the last few years but some of these boiling point posts are a bit premature and frankly not good for your blood pressure 🙂

However the Daily Star has great French contacts.

There hasn’t been a stampede of deals done yet, but we have missed out on 2 of our alleged long term targets – Ings and Richards. We have also missed out on Juanmi, who we were reported to be watching closely.
There are still plenty of options available to us, but we have to be willing to splash the cash. Mings, Hughes, Austin all been quoted as £10-15million, we have been heavily linked with one of those for a year or two, one for 6months, and then the other since QPR were heading down. Will we spend that money on any of them? I doubt it.
Now, given they are 3 heavily linked players, and much more than we would usually be willing to pay, will we go back to scouring budget and very average French players again as they are cheaper.
There is time for them to turn it around, but until they have acted then as far as I can see, the club is operating in the same manner. Actions speak louder than words.

Possibly because other teams dont need to rebuild on the scale we need
One or two players to improve the teams is enough

I like Cabaye, and if we brought him back he would be our best midfielder, by a long shot. Still, I’d prefer we go a different route. If De Jong stays fit, big if possibly, then he is our playmaker. Rather than Cabaye we should be looking for a younger playmaker who can understudy for De Jong, is raw, but with the ability to still develop. As we saw last summer after loaning Remy, rather than just paying the going rate for a striker, we then have the same issues again. In fact, we are still feeling the effects of just loaning a centre forward as we are still short in that area.
If other clubs are after him, and if Spurs are, then I’d say Spurs are big favourites, not us on loan. PSG would prefer a permanent deal, opening up permanent spaces in the squad.

Andre Ayew, another we were heavily linked with, he never went to Lpool or Spurs. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but I wonder how much more Gomis cost than Riverie when you factor it all in. But then again at 26 Riverie has sell on value………

Comment #20True but the only measured time to make these definitive statements like ‘…he won’t come ..’ this ‘..and we won’t…’ that is when we come to the end of the window and the proof will be in the pudding, as you partly say. Until then its speculation based on bitter experience of the recent past. Just an observation on the rising amount of apparently in the know comments. Charnley is the one in the firing line now if no squad improvements are made by August kick off, now that Ashley has pulled a fast one and bowed out of football board responsibility

I have probably missed out someone over 21 but that would probably be our 25 man squad at present.
Even after moving out Raylor and Jonas, there is still a lot of deadwood to be removed and I doubt Ashley, being the miser he is, would be willing to bring too many players in whilst paying players that are not going to play.
I would say Ashley would be saying it is up to McLaren to get those fringe players performing to a standard required by a top 10 team.

I don’t believe Ings and Richards were ever our targets.
Given how quick the Ings deal was done it strongly suggests that everything had been wrapped some time ago.
Richards is essentially a right back and we currently have one of the best right backs in the league. I doubt either would want to be understudy to the other. Some say that Richards could (and that is the worrying word) become a centre back but I believe the club is after a recognised centre back and not some ersatz shoe in.

Comment #25I’d like to ask the romantics out there how many times does re living your past work out?
Except Beardsley I can’t think of one player we’ve had in first 11 who we have sold then re bought and they played as well or better than first time.
It maybe nice thinking of past glory but it won’t be repeated as there’ll always be a elephant in the room.
IMO Cabaye would prefer a reunion with Debeuchy over the Toon Army.

Yeah, forgot about Ayew, well we were told we couldn’t compete with Swansea, where did they finish again? 8th. So we can calculate that punching above our weight only takes us to 9th and around Stoke level at the most.
Still, as you mention Gomis, we know that free transfers aren’t cheap! I was never really keen on Gomis either, but he is a far better player than Rivi ever will be. If you think Rivi has sell on value then I may have to question your sanity!

back to your favourite player mate.
So, I think NO. We almost got relegated with him in the side as well. He often just observed games, we glorified him and duped PSG into paying an outrageous amount for a simply decent player. He walked out on us etc. etc.
Hope I won’t need to comment on him again. NO. We want better, in order to go up a step or two.

It is difficult to know who are targets are, plenty of nonsense is made up, but when rumours and stories are repeated for a long time then it can be assumed that there is likely something behind it. Ings and Richards have both been linked for a long time.
We may not have acted on the interest, but I’d say they were on the list of targets, just we didn’t get out of the gates.
On Richards, he would be a better centre back then what we have at the moment. The fact he can cover both is great. We need a new right back, looks like Trippier is off to Spurs, and he would have been my first choice – at £3.5million he is a bargain as well.
The point is, these players are players that it is fairly safe to assume that we have tracked, and we haven’t made a move, whilst other clubs have strengthened.

Yeah, that is probably true, but I can’t see the club going after both. Paying Cabaye £85k a week, spending £10-15million plus wages on Hughes, and having De Jong around picking up another £40k+.
It just doesn’t add up in terms of how the club operate, so I think it would be one or the other.

Comment #35It will be interesting to see how Tiote gets on under McClaren. He wasn’t a first choice in Holland for McClaren, in his last season there he only completed 6 matches, and was subbed on more times than he started games, and was often brought off.

Comment #40i dont think it matters who we are linked with !
as proven by our team we will only sign those bargain players who we can get on low wages reguardless of what quality we should be going for ! if they are not a bargain (charlie austin) i’d bet we dont sign him.
however if there was a player like bas dost available for say 8mil who is on a lot lower wage then prem players and its clear that he will score a few goals and his value will double in a years time then i have no doubt we have geniune intrest in him.
