Ever since January of 2010 – our promotion season – Steven Taylor has been dogged by long term injuries, and in the game against West Brom in January of 2010, Steve sustained an injury that effectively kept him out for the rest of the season.
But luckily in came big Mike Williamson from Portsmouth and he played really well to fill in for Steven, and we got a fantastic 102 points with 30 wins in the Championship, and were promoted straight back to the Premier League.
Thanks to manager Chris Hughton of course.
Steven Taylor in action last season
Steven was injured on January 1st this year when he ruptured his Achilles tendon, and he was out for the rest of the season.
But nobody was brought in during January to replace him, and we had both Paul Dummett and Daryl Janmaat fill in at center-back.
In the last five seasons Steven has played only 85 times for Newcastle, and in total over the last 11 years since he made his debut under Sir Bobby Robson early in 2004, he’s made 251 appearances with 15 goals for his home town club.
News today that Taylor is working through this summer in an attempt to be fit and ready to get back into Newcastle’s first team under new head coach Steve McClaren.
He’s been working with the physios at the Benton training ground, but with one year left on his contract Steven could well be sold in the summer.
It will depend if Newcastle can bring in a couple of good center-backs this summer, and if that happens Mike Williamson and Steven could both be on their way.
Steven has met Steve McClaren already, and he had this to say on Facebook:
“Looking forward to working under Steve McClaren – exciting times ahead.”
There’s nothing wrong with Steven’s attitude of course, and we hope he can play well and stay uninjured next season.
But the odds are on him being sold this summer.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #81Lets not get carried away talking about how well “Big Mike Williamson” did. First of all it was the Championship, and secondly we we were still paying 70% of our income back out in wages.
Its fair to say that as long as we have had Taylor in the back 4 the defence has been suspect.
Draw your own conclusions!

Comment #93Just to clarify (in case anybody was wondering) I am nobody’s alias and, having only joined the blog yesterday, have no affiliation with any group/gang/faction. I am just a poor exiled Geordie who is surrounded by chelski and arsenal fans who have no interest in having a discussion about football. All I’m interested in is being able to chinwag about any rumours and titbits I find or hear about via the net, sports headlines or my son who still lives in God’s country and plays U15 football for N Shields

Comment #94Really? I think the only one making classifications is you, Blackley me old latte guzzler. it’s evident the blog wouldn’t function on consensus, so there’s bound to be difference of opinion, yes even among members of the ‘high five gang’. I think you are instrumental in promoting this discord by rallying the ridiculers and the dysfunctional to form a ‘low life gang’ that can slug it out with insults and trades of derision. Then what kind of blog does that leave? Not a football one that’s for sure. I know you have your reasons, but I often wonder why you are really here, is it not because your acidic and confrontational manner got you driven away? Judging by your progress here it doesn’t help your case much.

I think it’s really hard to define a real fan.
If you’re not hurting over the last 8years you can’t be a real fan.
If you find it fun to ridicule other people’s fears of what is happening to their club you can’t really care about the club as if you did you’d have considered their view.
We come in all shapes and sizes all have different views on pretty much everything.
I don’t think I’m more of a fan because I decided to boycott I’m the same as most fans but my line was crossed and enoughs was enough. If anything I worry about what being a fan means to me now, even if Ashley left I don’t think I’d get a season ticket again.
I have no problem with anyone who still wants to attend SJP what I have a problem with is people who champion Ashley and talk about we’ve seen worse days.
Not the answer you’re looking for but the best I’ve got ATM.

I don’t think I ever slagged the fans for going. I understand their addiction.
I’ve called some of them idiots at times as I’ve talked to loads who are sick of it but will still renew as they always have and even if they don’t like it they’ll still do it.
