There’s a report in the Mail that Arsenal will finally allow their Costa Rica striker Joel Campbell to leave the club this summer, and the fee is said to be around £5M, which Newcastle can afford.
Newcastle are said to be interested in the player who turns 23 on Thursday, and he’s played only 10 times for the Arsenal first team – but we don’t know if he is still in the frame at Newcastle.
Joel Campbell in Costa Rica colors
Joel has gained most of his experience on loan at various clubs over the last five years, and last summer he had a good World Cup for Costa Rica.
Last season he was on loan at Villareal, where he played 15 times for them with one goal and the Mail is reporting he is available for just £5M.
It remains to be seen if Campbell is still on Newcastle’s radar, but we were interested in signing the player last summer and at that time the fee talked about was £10M.
Whether Joel will be good enough for Newcastle is a good question, but here’s a cheap alternative to some of our better and more expensive targets.
It’s going to be interesting which strikers Newcastle can get in this summer, and we seem to be having some trouble in getting our transfer targets to Tyneside.
If Newcastle can only get one top striker in this summer we can simply keep Papiss Cisse who still has two years to run on his contract, and at least Papiss will be fully fit next season – which he wasn’t last season and still scored 11 goals for us.
In his career Joel has played 142 first team games with 18 goals and has 42 caps for Costa Rica with 10 goals.
