Newcastle Are New Front Runners To Sign Charlie Austin

11:03 pm, Tuesday, June 23rd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 139 Comments

The Express are rather surprisingly reporting late tonight that Newcastle have moved into pole position to sign our top target – QPR striker Charlie Austin –  but we wonder if this report can be believed.

Charlie austin _3147013b

Charlie Austin – Newcastle in pole position

The latest news is that Southampton have offered close to the required £15M for Austin – £13.75M – but the report is that Steve McClaren and the Newcastle Board have come in with an even higher offer.

We find that a little hard to believe,  and we know the Saints are serious when they go after any target, and £13.75M is above what we’ve been told Newcastle have been willing to offer in the past – which is said to be around £10M.

The news is that the Saints are still keen on the player but that  West Ham and Chelsea are watching developments, and seem unwilling to offer the £15M that QPR Director of Football Les Ferdinand wants for his top player.

We think Charlie is worth £15M to Newcastle, so we are hoping this report is accurate and that we’ve offered the £15M or very close to it to QPR – but we have our doubts.

However there’s been news today that Newcastle will offer the Englishman the famous number  9 shirt to join the club, and there has also news today that our current number 9 Papiss Cisse will be sold in the summer, with the club now willing to listen to offers.

So at least that seems to back up this report – kind of.

Charlie had a great first season in the Premier League last term,  scoring 18 Premier League goals in just 36 appearances for relegated QPR.

Newcastle need a big breakthrough like this in the transfer market this summer,  if we are to put the Geordie pride back into Newcastle United.

Charlie Austin would be a fantastic signing for us.

We hope the report is true.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    Janmaat ??? Colo Hiadara
    Colback Song
    Sissoko De Jong Cabella

    30-35 mill for that

  • 2 BlacknWhiteBarmy // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:08 PM

Needs to be seen if the No9 shirt swings it – he does not want to leave London

  • 3 tequilamag // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:10 PM

  • 4 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:10 PM

Not to say I believe this ‘bid’ but if we have bid then we have word he will come, probably already agreed tentative details, would be silly business if we hadnt heard from his agent that he was keen…but then this is NUFC

  • 5 BlacknWhiteBarmy // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:10 PM

14M bid for him – when everyone knows the asking proce is 15M – is it that important for FatAsh to drive a bargain?
He has already alienated the majority of French owners with his attitude – now working on the UK – TO$$ER

  • 6 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:11 PM

Haha no just couldnt think of a CB we have been linked with that wasn’t Matip

  • 7 BlacknWhiteBarmy // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:12 PM

wwsbrd – u still think Colo will be here next year? He has had some savage attention from the same fans that took pride in the Colo song

  • 8 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:13 PM

Ah stick Dunk in there and thats ur team for 25 mill meant to be a budget of 60mill yeah? Ashley would love me handling transfers! I got a spare 35 mill to splash about!

  • 9 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:13 PM

You ridicule my comment that you have to make a profit or borrow money to be able to buy players. How else can you buy players? Rob a bank?

Your comparison of profits made and players bought is irrelevant. That’s because clubs do borrow and decide to mortgage their future. Have you seen from your own figures that Chelsea’s net debt is over £1bn?

I have no problems borrowing to invest provided the players bought at the start of the season could be sold at the end of the season for the same amount paid or more, if you wanted to sell. But we buy duds most often. I wouldn’t want to borrow and invest on the old man’s recommendations. If it was your own money, I don’t believe you’d back Carr and Charnley.

  • 10 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:14 PM

Dont think he will have a choice bud, dont see anyone lining up to meet our valuation of him and if hes here he is starting games

  • 11 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:15 PM

    What duds have we bought?

  • 12 tequilamag // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:15 PM

WWSBRD I have no idea who any of them are.I think he should be scary though can`t remember the last real terrifying player we had in defence

  • 15 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:18 PM

Where did you get your figure for free advertising? £10m was it? £10m! Did you dream that up? Where?

Sunderland have a similar size stadium and appearances on tv. How much do they get? What is their total commercial income including stadium advertising?

  • 17 willowdalerez // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:19 PM

We should pay the 15m and bring Austin in. He would immediately give a threat up front and just who else is available for that role if someone else does come in for him (Dost about the only serious contender of note unless there’s a secret deal that none of the papers have wind of)

  • 18 Belfast // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:20 PM

Yeah somebody who eats raw herrings for breakfast

  • 19 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:21 PM

    oh yes WWSBRD

A man who would run through a breezeblock wall for you

  • 22 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:23 PM

The last biggest dud was Cabella. You like him I believe. How much did we pay for him? We’d never get our money back. The kid is pants in this league. Rivi is another one. Then Gouffran and De Jong. We wasted money on De Jong’s brother too. Chucky. What was that about?

  • 23 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:24 PM

Niklas Sule he’s a mean b*stard only 19 but gonna be an awesome cb

  • 26 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:29 PM

Tiote, Sissoko, Cabaye, Cisse, Janmaat are internationals. Every EPl coach would’ve had them on their radar. It’s no surprise that they improved the team.

  • 27 Belfast // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:29 PM

Somebody who eats raw herrings pre game, half time and after the game. Ryan Shawcross for me.

  • 28 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:30 PM

Belfast could we get Shawcross though? I can’t see him leaving stoke tbh

  • 29 tequilamag // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:30 PM

Blackley if you care to examine any clubs transfer dealings over the past 5 years you will find every club buys a high proportion of duds. Your obsession with Carr to deflect from Mash is laughable.
The chances of him getting his top picks signed are low and he has had a decent record of getting players in that made the money to pay for the duds you point out. Mash has a 0 net spend on transfers over his ownership.

  • 30 Belfast // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:30 PM

    Don’t mention breezblocks Tequila

  • 31 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:32 PM

Well we disagree on Cabella I still think he will be very good for us, as for how much we paid for him somewhere between 7.5-12 mill depending on who u read. Rivi isnt particularly good so far but again righting off a player after one season is over the top imo

Gouffran was around 1 mill which is nothing and when he first came in, as a stop gap, he was pretty good in all fairness and by the account I heard he was Pardews pick. De Jong cant be judged he has barely played not least because our medical staff is terrible and Luuk was a striker who we played as a deep lying CAM not really Carr’s fault the tactics were completely wrong

Ferrerya cost little by all accounts and was pretty low risk to take him on loan also widely spread it was Colo who pushed to get him in not any of our scouts

  • 32 Shadow_Shearer // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:34 PM

I would love for austin 2 come here. But it’s hard to believe this report. Firstly we’ve bidded 14 million, u can see why that’s hard to believe. Southampton let us outbid them by 250,000, im sure they will come back with another offer.
If this article is actully true, chelsea & West ham are waiting to pounce, & steal him off us. Both London clubs.

  • 33 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:36 PM

Tiote, Sissoko, Cabaye, Cisse, Janmaat are internationals. Every EPl coach would’ve had them on their radar.

So we shouldnt scout players who play for their national team?

  • 34 Our Toon // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:38 PM

    Toon from leeds

A couple of threads ago you asked why messi hasn’t come to the prem if it’s the best league, in my opinion the prem is the 3rd best league for quality a close 3rd with Italians just behind in 4th. The Spanish league is by far the best league and standout league in terms of quality, the German league is 2nd.

Spanish teams won CL and EL. Dortmund who finished 11th or lower stuffed Arsenal at home. Chelsea and Arsenal lost to 2 french teams, the quality in the prem has dropped dramatically, since the introduction of quotas!!

  • 35 BlacknWhiteBarmy // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:41 PM

Love it when fans are more concerned about finances than success – true FatAsh mould!

Get a life – without ambition football is nothing – without he dream of Messi in Black n White what the point!

  • 36 Our Toon // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:41 PM

If SDJ stays fit…at the minute it’s a big if, the lad is a class act….A really intelligent player who is also a presence in the opposing box. He’s a class act, issue though was a injury hit 1st season.

Sometimes this can happen but let’s hope he’s over it though!!

  • 37 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:41 PM

  • 41 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:48 PM

Spanish League way a head of the BPL? 3 teams maybe but the league itself isnt amazing but its hugely unfair

German league is better but Bayern run through everyone, less entertaining because of that

BPL anyone can beat anyone, depends what ur looking for I suppose personally I think all 3 are entertaining to watch for different reasons but Id rather watch PL than the other two

  • 42 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:49 PM

but the better quality players are in Spain

  • 44 overtheline // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:52 PM

I simply pointed out that your comment was wrong in both fact and inference. If you choose to feel ridiculed then that is down to your own mindset. You really don’t need to take the huff or restate the same erroneous argument. Nor did you read the points made properly.

Like it or not investment mostly comes from borrowings which you somewhat over dramatise as “mortgaging the future”.

If investment comes from profits then that affects the return on capital to the owners of the business equity as I’m sure you’ll agree. (though investment from profit is very often tax deductible). I did not argue that investment ought not come from profit simply that the capitalist model does not require this. Basically revenue has to exceed outgoings to make investment worthwhile. This is the key point and I can’t see how you can possibly disagree.

I didn’t discuss debt and deficit, except to point out that Manure need to sustain revenues to service the Glazers’ borrowings. If you want to discuss debts and deficits feel free and please outline your position.

You really don’t like anyone who disagrees with your views do you ?

  • 46 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:57 PM

Aye, how could i miss Colback? If im honest i dont rate him. He goes missing in lots of games for me. IF anita can play to the standard that he did last game then he will always be picked over Colback in my opinion. But thats not guaranteed. I think Anita could be a big part of our season under McClaren along with Tiote. I liked the look of Abeid also and i would love to see more of him next season in an advanced role.

  • 47 WWSBRD // Jun 23, 2015 at 11:57 PM

In all honesty mate I dont think there is a big difference, end of the say we will never know until Uncle Sepp produces the ultra/elite league

CL without knockouts and without the less favorable nations
England, Spain, Italy, Germany, France end of 5 years we’d have an answer

  • 48 WWSBRD // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:00 AM

Haha I meant Sissoko mate but aye Colback as well

As for Anita in 2…3 years? (No idea how long he has been with us and dont care enough to look it up) he has had 1 good game whereas Colback in 1 year with us has had 1 good season, Id have him over big Vern all day long

  • 51 BlacknWhiteBarmy // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:03 AM

    Overtheline et al

Ashley bought the club – not our issue if he turns a profit!

The old adage – speculate to accumulate come to mind – unfortunately the stack high dell cheap seems to be the pattern.

As fans do we really care if FatAsh looses a few million in getting a successful team?
As fans are we happy to be used as a backboard to the advertising of SD?
As fans do we want to see the best players in BlacknWhite?

Basically as fans we should not give a flying $%£$% to finance – we want attractive, winning football on the pitch – if that needs 100M on players – so what, FatAsh gets his tat advertised and we get a winning team.
At the moment it is FatAsh having his cake and eating it! – helped by those who care about club profit!!!

  • 52 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:07 AM

Oh yeah lol. Ermmm, sissoko can be sold to fund other players then haha.

Your opinion on Colback is very understandable however under Mcclaren i strongly believe that Anita could carry on his form. He could be like the Will hughes of out team as someone pointed out on here earlier.

  • 53 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:12 AM

    Tequila, you say,

“Your obsession with Carr to deflect from Mash is laughable”

What’s laughable is you making such a daft statement when I hold Ashley ultimately responsible for appointing these incompetents. So figure that one out.

  • 54 WWSBRD // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:19 AM

Haha poor old Sissoko once was thought so highly of now easily forgotten!

Hmm I dont see Anita playing all that often but who knows, I think Colback will prove to be a better player for us in the long run but time will tell

Anyhoo boys and girls and out, enjoy

  • 55 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:20 AM

You say I can’t possibly disagree. It was you who was disagreeing with me and holding out my statement as wrong. Now you’ve just agreed it was right but want to quibble about the terminology which wouldn’t be of your choosing.

So just to be clear. Was I right or wrong to say you need profit or borrowing to buy players?

  • 56 optimistic prime // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:22 AM

    Flappy gob

That article is from 2008, you’ll note Stokes prices for advertising boards per game range from £750-£3500 depending on placement. That’s 7years ago to stop any arguments well average it at £1500 (actually lower than average) and NUFC have over 400, do the maths then multiply by 18 (forget the cups).

    That’s £10.8million

NUFC have a higher profile than Stoke they’re on the tv more than Stoke so can therefore charge more.

I’ve been conservative with my figures and haven’t included electric billboards, the huge signs on the roof etc or even allowed for prices rises. That’s off stokes revenue, or are we not as big as them?

  • 57 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:26 AM

    Overtheline you day

“I did not argue that investment ought not come from profit simply that the capitalist model does not require this. ” Nobody said you did say it ought too. And I never said the capitalist model did tequire that it did. I said profit or borrowing gives money for investment.

  • 58 Looney_toon_89 // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:28 AM

I hope signing Austin isn’t just an excuse to sell Cisse and not replace him, Otherwise we won’t be that much better off unless we have some sort of backup other than Perez (Riviere & Ferrera are disasters along with De Jong x2).

  • 59 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:30 AM

I can’t find anything on your link about Stoke. But have you answered my question about Sunderland? If you insist on Stoke, what is their total commercial revenue in their last accounts?

  • 60 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:33 AM

While you’re on, work out the saving on the interest free loan of £130m using a commercial rate of interest.

  • 61 banjax // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:35 AM

We all know Mike Ashley has unspent money in the bank from years gone by from the sales of our players like Cabaye etc. when you add that to the premiership cash plus sales of out going players, we should be looking at a transfer kitty approaching £80m upwards. This is the kind of money that needs to be spent just to catch up with the likes of Swansea, West Ham and Southampton. However it would foolish to advertise how much money you had to spend because automatically the players you want go up in price as well. I hope so anyway !

  • 62 Mister Tuff // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:51 AM

Blackley – there seems to be a lot of posters challenging your versions of events as you do not agree with their input instead you choose to believe your own version -without one shread of possibility that the other partys’ may be bang on the money.
Seems it is your version or none at all -my way or the highway.
You’ve argued previously in a similar vein -what was it again -ah yes – the arrest King Percy case.
Observers I’m sure are seeing you primarily as stubborn as a mule.- that is a mule wearing blinkers.
If you feel it necessary to further pusue your case against these new “challengers” – you should arrest them – drunk and disorderly will do (citizens arrest) and present the offenders at the local pokey.
I’ll let you borrow the squad car if you want – but no using the sirens.

  • 63 lesh // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:54 AM

Given the reported bidding activity of late, can we assume that STs aren’t selling too well?

Will they ever understand (isn’t Moncur supposed to be Ashley’s eyes and ears on the ground?) that STs’ll sell when, when players are actually signed?

We’ve been through the same crap for years, even before Ashley pitched up.

  • 64 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 24, 2015 at 12:56 AM

You could be right Lesh but Im hoping this is actually players being bid for for same reason

  • 65 Our Toon // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:01 AM

Spanish league only has 3 teams does it? I’m assuming that’s Barca, 2 madrid. What about Valencia, double EL winners Sevilla? If you consider these teams get nowhere near the money the big 2 get and nowhere near the money premier league teams get.

Luis Suarez was the best player in the prem the season he was sold now he’s the 3rd maybe 4th best player in his team, if barca, real and bayern played in this league they’d walk it. We have a competitive league but the standard of football is poor compared to the Spanish and German leagues.

  • 66 willowdalerez // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:11 AM

geordie157 @50 Agreed with that comment on Cabella and we should only be looking at Thauvin if we sell Cabella because they are basically the same player (Ligue 1 french right wingers) and Thauvin will have no more success than Cabella unless we play a much more attacking form of ball under McClaren… long ball does not play to their strength they’ll do a lot of running around chasing the ball (neither are aerial duelists Thauvin’s in somewhere at 40% and Cabella’s nearer 30%) and few chances to drive the play forward.

  • 67 lesh // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:11 AM

Spot on mate. Ticket sales down let’s resort to what’s worked in the past, plenty of bollocks leaked to the press in the hope people buy into the shit.

I remember when sky’s big story 18 months ago was 4 signings to be made in January, cabaye went out and LDJ came in!! Problem is some still fall for the bollocks

  • 69 ToonFromLeeds // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:15 AM

  • 70 Our Toon // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:19 AM

Doesn’t matter where Cabella is played, it’s the final 3rd he was poor in, whether out wide or central his shooting and passing was awful, his decision making was piss poor and worst of all he kept hold of the ball to long doing daft stepovers when no one is around him. Fathem ben arfa did more in 5 mins than Cabella did in an entire season!!

  • 71 willowdalerez // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:24 AM

BTW I get Thauvin’s aerial by knocking 20% off upon entering EPL he’s at 60% in Ligue 1 but Cabella was 50% Ligue 1 and was 30% last year… EPL is simply a harder / rougher league and that means less success in the air and (Cabaye was at 50% last year in aerial for PSG but never better than 10% at Newcastle)

  • 72 YoungMagpieFromBurnley // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:25 AM

Its a shame that we cant trust the club, everything is always in the dark leaving us to guess every situation. That will only come back and bite the club in the a**e when the fans finaly realise this. No trust, no season tickets. Seems like its finaly taking place.

If what Lesh says is true then the club must be getting desperate lol. Arent we always?!

  • 73 willowdalerez // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:27 AM

Our Toon – Do you think Thauvin has more upside than Cabella? If so sell one and pick up the other otherwise why bother?

  • 74 Lindisfarne // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:34 AM

“”My arguments against the anti-Ashley brigade are simply that he’s not as bad as our previous owners. Even if the fans owned the club, they’d have to make profits and therefore run the club along similar lines.
Any owner has to make a profit in order to buy players, unless they want to borrow money and mortgage the future to do so…… I’d like to see every NUFC owner make a profit first and then use that to invest in players second.
We’re not making enough profit to pay down the debt AND buy the quality players we need; it’s one or the other. If Ashley didn’t give the loan interest free, we’d be paying a massive amount of interest at a commercial rate.
The amount that we forego in advertising revenues is small beer in comparison; it’s greatly exaggerated.
We were paying a very high rate of interest on a massive debt. We had little capacity for further borrowing, because we were mortgaged almost to the hilt based on securitisation arrangement. We weren’t going to make a profit to invest in players.
The last regime had us avoiding relegation because they were borrowing to the limit. But the writing was on the wall.””

CURRENTLY – the revenue from broadcasting has grown 200% but the debt is larger than it was previously with no repayments occurring and the ability to self finance investment is considered minimal. The standard of football has gone down with minimal investment in players and the Club is not any better off.

Ashley is a Cheapskate, a Liar and has no obligation to change.

  • 75 willowdalerez // Jun 24, 2015 at 1:37 AM

I know one excuse more than a few people (including Ed) have mentioned that I don’t buy for the lack of signings and that is that the players don’t want to play for the toon.

There may be a handful such players with the world at their doorstep but the majority of players are mercenaries.. show the cash and they will sign. Fact is showing the cash shows ambition, the cash is what shows you are serious… The reason players won’t sign is if you continually lowball for bargains… That is no exercise in teambuilding and it shows the true direction of the club and that will put off players that be more interested otherwise.

    Morning / Afternoon lads,
what’s going on? Got back from a short break but seems things going slow on our club front.May be a sign of good things to come? OR
May be the targets are in place, done and dusted, and ready for a strike by July 1st?
We have a home opening game,I was pleased it is a home game, and is cracking one too against one of the new golden club, the other golden club is Swansea..
Hopefully there will be at least 2 ins before July 6.Definitely they won’t meet fans empty handed by then.I’m still feel optimistic though, too early to judge something at this moment, but we need to see at least the coaching stuffs sorted & a player in!!

Where’s the love Les, didn’t we used to chant your name and pay your bills. With Les in the position to get him to understand how fantastic the club is, why has this dragged on so long.

  • 83 Blofal // Jun 24, 2015 at 5:41 AM

I know there are a lot of cynics on here and your cynicism is entirely justified.. but I do believe the board are going very hard for Austin. And the reports we have offered big money for Thauvin have surprised me in a good way. It sounds like for the first time in a long time we are really throwing money at our targets.

If the board don’t get Austin they know the repercussions. They know the fans don’t trust them. They have extended season ticket renewals 3 times. The only way they can win back the fans is by buying good players, actually getting them over the line, and by then playing good football and going for the cups.

They know this. You can hate the board all you like but they are not deaf. Bobby Moncur certainly isn’t. The club almost fell into oblivion last season. I think it woke them up. But we shall see.

  • 84 Blofal // Jun 24, 2015 at 5:47 AM

    Our Toon

I think Cabella needed a year to adapt. Everyone remember Debuchy’s first season? He was rubbish defensively but his second season he was brilliant.

Cabella doesn’t go down at the drop of a hat anymore. On the continent flair players have far more time on the ball than in the Premier League. There is far more pressure on the ball carrier here which is why so many players fail when they can’t physically stand their ground. I think Cabella will come good if he bulks up. He isn’t fast enough to be a winger. So if he is going to play as an attacking midfielder he needs to strengthen. Aarons and Perez did it and I think he can too.

  • 85 cyprus // Jun 24, 2015 at 6:13 AM

When you are an unfashionable club you need to throw money at top players.

Not sure about this Austin having that title, though I admit I haven’t seen him enough. As such, wouldn’t mind either way.

    Other news: Go Baggy, mate!!

  • 86 The overrated Frenchman // Jun 24, 2015 at 6:29 AM

With Cabella I think it’s more about a mindset than bulking up. He came here with the philosophy that going to ground on any contact is the easiest option and might get you the free kick. Well, that doesn’t work in the Premier League, as I’m sure he discovered. Whether he can make the adjustment remains to be seen.

  • 87 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 24, 2015 at 6:37 AM

For Cabella, the going to ground easily isn’t my main issue with his performances last season. There were far too many tricks for the sake of doing tricks. Tricks that don’t beat anyone, and just slow the play down. If that is what he wants to do he should get in touch with Keegan and reopen the Circus football business.

Secondly his shooting, it wasn’t just poor, it was awful most of the time. Powdepuff, almost as though he had never learned how to strike a ball properly. Now, I’m sure he has learned how to strike it, and I’m sure some of his goals in France would be evidence to this, so what is the problem he has doing it in the Prem. One off, you can get away with, but it was consistent through the season. Very odd.

  • 88 Ron Knee // Jun 24, 2015 at 6:42 AM

I see you posted on The Chronic website. What are you holding in your arm? Can’t make it out.

  • 89 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 24, 2015 at 6:43 AM

I hate the term ‘bulking up’. It is a blanket term which often ignores what the player actually needs to do. Why would you want him bulking up? You don’t need to bulk up to be hard to shake off the ball. Cabella needs to improve his core strength, but more than that is that he needs to be cleverer with the ball, his body, but also mentally stronger – as The overrated Frenchman says, it is a mentality thing for Cabella, he could probably have stayed up at least half of the times.

Hopefully we will see him improve, but we can’t wait about forever for him to learn and adapt.

A team needs tough guys whom other players bounce off of, grinders, shooters, fast ones, etc. It also needs flair players who can break down formations, take on opponents. Ditto Cabs, an important player.
He’s no HBA, but who is 😉

  • 95 firebug666 // Jun 24, 2015 at 6:50 AM

    Lilo @87

I agree mate, but when a good player becomes a poor player then you have to look for the reason.

When he arrived, Pardew was saying he is not ready for the premiership yet, and he was only given bit parts to play.

The coaching of our squad has been poor for years, and Cabella was not the only player suffering on the pitch.

Players around him made little if any movement off the ball, this caused all of our attacking play to falter once we crossed the halfway line.

Cabella wanted to show the fans what he can do, that was probably a poor decision on his part as we needed goal not tricks.

What I am hoping is that McClaren will get him playing the football I suspect he is capable of next season, and that with a revitalised team and a few additions a lot of the poor play from last season will be eradicated.

I’m not defending Cabella, or any of the other players, just trying to point out reasons for their sudden poor form.

  • 96 Ron Knee // Jun 24, 2015 at 6:52 AM

Thanks. My old eyes aren’t very good!
Cabella is a bit of an enigma. I want him to come good, obviously. Perhaps if McClaren can re-organise the way we play, Cabella will improve.

  • 97 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 24, 2015 at 6:58 AM

But it isn’t through Pardew or the coaches that Cabella was incapable of striking a ball, or doing tricks when he had 5 yards of space around him. I haven’t pulled him up for anything to do with team play, just the things that he did as an individual that won’t have been affected by other influences.

I hope Cabella does come good, but many of the issues he has are issues that come from himself, not his team mates, and not the coaches. It is up to him to learn and develop himself, as well as working with the coaches to improve aspects of team play.

  • 98 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jun 24, 2015 at 6:59 AM

Spending money is the easiest thing in the world so if we end up spending £15-20M on Austin they are not going to get my praise!

…it will just prove they absolutely don’t know what they are doing!

  • 99 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:01 AM

    Ron Knee,
How would you reorganise it though? From what I have heard, Cabella is best as an attacking midfielder through the centre. If (possibly a big if) De Jong is fit, I’d prefer De Jong to do that. I think he is a cleverer footballer, if not as fancy. But then others want 2 up top, which means we need more than just a fancy attacking midfielder in that role.

It is difficult in my opinion to fit Cabella anywhere other than out wide. A lot will depend on signings and departures I guess, so a bit early to try and figure where people fit in.

  • 100 firebug666 // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:04 AM

I think the coaching has a lot to do with it. Whilst it not right to coach skills out of him he should have been told their is a time and place for show boating.

On the shooting, I have to agree, he was very week in that department, I often said my son has more power in his shot.

Let’s just hope his second season is the first of his best seasons.

  • 101 cyprus // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:04 AM

  • 105 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:10 AM

I remember Pardew saying in an interview that Cabella needed to learn when to do a trick and when not to, so he was being told. It can take time to adapt, so I’m not writing him off yet, he obviously had something about him to return 14 goals and 7 assists in a side that battled relegation most of the season.

I used a couple of Man U players as a comparison to Cabella for this last season. When Ronaldo joined the first season he was doing pointless tricks constantly. Same with Nani. 1 of the two learned when to be direct and when to do tricks, the other still does pointless tricks.

  • 106 Ron Knee // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:11 AM

I’ve just been watching Cabella on YouTube when he played for Montpellier. Nothing wrong with his finishing! Of course the clip doesn’t show his build-up play so it’s difficult to judge what he got up to in midfield.

  • 110 firebug666 // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:17 AM

Point well made mate, However Cabella has had a very poor season, in a poor team, with poor coaching and little tactical nous.

  • 121 firebug666 // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:35 AM

Oh yes, some players have needed to go for a while, but will that happen? Who knows.

I can understand what SM was trying to say with his clean slate statement, but even he must know some players need to be excluded from that clean slate and shipped out.

Things are not good at Newcastle just now, we are struggling to fill the vacant coaching staff places, and who knows who we are targeting on the player front or if any targets have even been sorted out yet.

For me this is the most worrying transfer window ever, we know we have a poor team as shown in the last two seasons, also the clubs hierarchy always seem to drag their heels on transfers, so we may be reliant on players like Cabella to get us through another season.

  • 125 sparky55 // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:40 AM

Re Cabella…he’ll be fine…he just needs a good coach behind him who will give him a role he’ll become comfortable with.

He has been a good finisher in France…I think’s it’s down to first season nerves and wanting to make an impression…Rivierre suffering from the same problem…some good goals in pre-season and an early goal or two in the season proper and the two of them will be fine.

I think the whole team will relish being coached by proper coaches and Maclaren will get a lot more out of them than the last 2 numpties ever would / could.

Creating a sum greater than the individual parts is the key…it’s a sign of a good coach but having said that Pardew did get the team to 5th…but I truly believe we got every role of the dice that season and we found a knack of winning even though we were mostly very average.

Good coaching is key…I’m sure we’ll do much better this season

    Just my opinion

    Newcastle United are behind schedule?

    Only by 8 years though!

  • 128 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:44 AM

The big problem is going to be who will take them. I’d happily see Marveaux, Ferguson, Obertan, Saylor, Willo, Goofy, leave now. Wouldn’t be too fussed about Tiote, Sissoko, Rivi and Colo joining that lot (replacements dependant). Out of those players though I could probably see 2 or 3 actually attracting bids from clubs who could match the financial terms they would want, or the club would want.

I think we are going to be relying on loaning players out, which likely won’t happen till August. Will the club be comfortable gambling that they can off load these players and therefore bring others in early?

For me that is another reason why Mitrovic would be high on my list of transfers, he wouldn’t need registering this season whereas to bring in more than one older centre forward will likely see the departure of Cisse.

  • 129 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 24, 2015 at 7:50 AM

I hope so on Cabella, just don’t see it with Riviere. He isn’t a natural centre forward, he isn’t a natural wide man, he isn’t good enough to be a number 10. I don’t see where he fits if we are to compete in the top half.

I’d try and offload him and Goofy, and bring in a centre forward and a genuine wide man. Specific players for specific positions, rather than a pair of jack of all trades, masters of none.
