Newcastle Offered Uruguayan International Striker

9:19 am, Tuesday, June 23rd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 23 Comments

There’s news in the Chronicle today that Newcastle United could be offered 22 year-old Uruguayan International Diego Rolan, who is currently at French club Bordeaux.

diego rolan

Diego Rolan – 22 year-old Bordeaux striker

It looks like Newcastle will find it difficult to sign our number one target Charlie Austin, but we are said to be negotiating with Wolfsburg to get Dutch International striker Bas Dost through the door.

Rolan wants to try his luck on the Premier League and he has been at Bordeaux for over two years after joining them from Defensor Sporting in early 2013.

Last season he scored 16 goals in 38 appearances for the French club and he made his debut in September 2014, in the friendly against Japan in Sapporo.

In his two seasons at Bordeaux he’s played 74 games with 18 goals and 9 assists.

The player stands 5’10” tall and has speed, but Newcastle are offered a lot of players in a transfer window and one of them last season – Facundo Ferreyra of Shakhtar Donetsk was a complete flop –  and didn’t play one game for us.

But Rolan is young and looks like a decent enough prospect and at 4M he would be a cheap but, and we all know Newcastle like cheap buys.

It’s difficult to know hoe this lad would do in the tough Premier League if we signed him.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    Coaches first, players last.

As I said last week we are going for players within 3 weeks time bit only after the coaches roles are filled.

We don’t have an assistant manager in yet and after that we need first team coaches, then you can put links on to the 600th players we are linked with, oh and good morning guys.

Sky have run 2 stories this morning, one saying Cisse staying, one saying he is to be sold. I wonder if they will be right…

So much money wasted on the likes of Riviere, Cabella, Chucky, De Jong, Gouffran, Anita …. So much faith put in names like Bigi, Street, Ferguson. You’ll probably have a good few other names of your own you could mention.

You’ve got to question the judgment of the comedian’s old man. Okay, he did well with Perez but other clubs are getting their fair share of up and coming talent.

People are blaming Ashley for not providing the money and for stipulating restrictive policies but Carr should have more sense than to sanction these purchases, bringing in more deadwood when it’s deadwood like Willo we need to get out, and needed to do so for years. It’s unfair to criticise his choice of the Forest lads at this stage but I’d be very surprised if they’re anything more than mediocre.

Folk are saying we mess around and try to drive too hard a bargain. Not hard enough IMO.

Does anyone trust Carr? Does anyone think he does a good job?

I’m liking the sound of this Ian Cathro, sounds like a good and ambitious coach, if SM is looking for an assistant that can carry on what he does, then i think Cathro could be the man. I still think simpson and steele need to be appointed as well, much better coaches than Stone and Woodman i reckon

Difficult to judge Carr, as we don’t know how many of his recommendations we passed on due to cost/wages/agents etc. Bony was apparently a player he wanted us to get, as was Gomis and Lacazette. We got none of them, but did go for Riviere. Until we know how far down the list we are going it is difficult to say how badly or how well he is doing.

Of course Carr should be taking some of the flak, I’ve said many times, it isn’t just one person at fault on or off the pitch. There is a collective responsibility, but at the end of the day, if Ashley isn’t satisfied with results, then he should be removing the decision makers, instead, he has let it continue.

    A good summary of Cathro:

No real explanation as to why he left Valencia:

    @6 lilong

i believe cisse himself wants to stay but the club thinks its the ideal time to sell him and cash in on his age and goals per game record from last season.

i’d like him to stay myself (even though he’s not the best striker in the world theres hardly any arguement that he’s very useful to us) and who knows if we sign a new striker that they will hit the ground running ! a-la river

  • 14 Jail for Ashley // Jun 23, 2015 at 9:43 AM

SBR was responsible for Ronaldo and Romario and a host of other players, he also chose Lua Lua and Carl Cort. Fergie was responsible for some right duffers in his time. Hugo Viana, European young player of the year. As you say, it would be easier to judge Carr if we bought all of his first choice recomemmdations.

I would swap any of our midfielders for Jordie Classie plus £15M cash, a complete midfielder and a huge talent.

According to this link from 11 days ago Cathro left to apply for the Rangers job . We all know Mark Warburton got that gig with David Weir.
Now here’s the thing MW knows Ashley from his trading days at HSBC.

    Me heids starting to spin.

i’d trade sissoko for wijnaldum !

if sundderland sign him they will have a great player on there hands ! he’s very smart and 2 steps ahead of the avg player.

In terms of best for fans, it would be sensible to keep hold of Cisse, as he has proven he can score in the Prem. In which case I think we need at least two good centre forwards who give us different options.

The club will obviously want to cash in if possible. His value will only decrease from here.

As for Cisse, I’m not sure if he wants to stay or not, I’d imagine he would be very open to leaving if the right deal was in place. Saying he wants to stay is just one way of saying to prospective buyers that they will have to offer him a good package to get him.

  • 19 Blackley and Brownlie // Jun 23, 2015 at 9:51 AM

Carr should be saying “He’s next on the list, but I don’t think he’s good enough and certainly not at that price.” …. “Bony is the man. You’ve got to get him at that price. Trust me.” They take long enough to get players in and brag about the due diligence; tracking them for years in some cases and even checking out their attitudes. Carr’s record with the whole squad is poor IMO.

  • 20 Lilongwe Geordie // Jun 23, 2015 at 9:52 AM

How do you know Carr isn’t saying that?

  • 21 stripes1009 // Jun 23, 2015 at 10:34 AM

Easy solution to getting Rolan’s ……..? Straight swop For Obertan and Goufran….there you go, sorted!

  • 22 ToonHeart // Jun 23, 2015 at 1:09 PM

All depends on the coaches to bring the best out in players. I think Cisse is a great striker and can be a serious threat, he proved this in our first season. If the new coaching staff can bring the best out in these players (which SM has proven he can do) then there’s no reason why Cisse couldn’t be knocking in the goals as we know he can do.

Stop thinking it’s about lack of money and players quality. We were mid table with our current players then John Carver took over and messed the whole team up.. It’s all about the quality of coaches bringing the best out in the players!!!
