There are persistent reports that Newcastle will sell Papiss Cisse this summer, but we are assuming that would only be considered if Newcastle can bring in two experienced strikers this summer and then we also have young Ayoze Perez and Manu Riviere for the four strikers we need – which is more than we had last season.
Today Sky Sports have said Newcastle are willing to listen to offers for the striker.
Papiss Cisse – Newcastle will listen to offers
But Cisse has continually said he wants to stay at the club and he was one of the few bright spots for us last season scoring 11 Premier League goals in 222 total appearances.
Although one big negative is that he did get himself suspended for 7 games after spitting at Jonny Evans in early March.
And as we know Newcastle lost every one of those games under inexperienced interim head coach John Carver.
Maybe the rumors have started because if we get Charlie Austin from QPR, he would get the number 9 jersey and Papiss would be used to recuperate some money but there’s a big fee on his head – said to be £10M and he’s now 30 years old.
Sky Sports is reporting Newcastle will listen to offers for the player and Cisse is quoted as saying he wants to stay at the club:
“I am at Newcastle and I have one and a half years left on my contract. I am a Newcastle striker and I just think about my holiday, when I go back to Newcastle I will try to work hard and try to make the team.”
“It’s good for Newcastle because he has been the England manager before. It is good to change something in the team.”
In January 2012 the news was that Papiss signed a five and a half year deal at Newcastle for around £9M – so Newcastle seem to want more than they paid for him.
Last season he was still suffering from the after-effects of his broken kneecap, but next season he should be fully fit.
There are clubs in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates interested in him, as well as Europa League winners Seville and Besiktas in Turkey.
It may be that Newcastle are testing the waters and see what offers they get for Papiss, but we’d be happy enough to see him stay at Newcastle for next season.
What do you think?

Did Cabella look impressive in the Champions League? He played 6 games with 1 assist in 4 defeats and 2 draws. Mbiwa was part of a defence that conceded 12 goals in 6 games.
Anita played in 10 group stage games for Ajax, the majority at left back and his side lost half of them.
I can’t say I watched all the games, but unless you did (unlikely) it is difficult to make a case for them being stand out players in the champions league.

You miss my point. All directors of football work within financial constraints, some more than others. I’m asking Jail if he thinks Ashley has made a good choice in appointing Carr because he thinks Carr is doing a good job working within the financial constraints given. Jail suggests Ashley has given Carr no money. The fact is we’ve wasted millions in transfer fees and wages in the last two years alone.

Yeah i definitely think the limited coaching has been the main problem. Carr scouts players in from playing certain positions & roles. When they arrive those positions need to be replicated & the roles they played reprised.
Surely it is pointless for Carr to be scouting players for positions & styles to fit into the team if when they arrive they are played elsewhere & asked to play a completely different way.
Hopefully under Mcclaren the working relationship between him & Carr will be much better with agreements made together on potential signings needed for the team & style of play.
This will hopefully mean players will be signed to play in the positions & in the style they were scouted in & we will get to see the best of them.

I think it will go farther than that
Supermac and Big Al know each other well and like and respect each other.
I fully expect McClaren in the future to invite Shearer to help with forward training along the lines of Teddy Sherringham at West Ham

Comment #48Surely we can’t judge Carr on the players we buy,as they are more than likely not his first choice players
Other players recommended represent less pound for pound value in the fuhrers eyes
It’s a complete false economy, buy shite and you can’t get rid,buy quality and they’ll have a resale value

The problem is, its hard to assess how well Carr is doing since we dont know if for example.. you have 15 million to spend on 3 players, Carr could argue the money better spent on 1 player not 3… MA only cares about making money and resales so wants 3 players brought in.
albiet I do agree we have wasted alot on players like Marv, amifito (sp*) Rivi etc.
But all in all I think Carr has spotted some gems that have came straight into the game at the EPL level.

I’m criticising Carr for his poor purchases with the money he’s got. You’re criticising me for being Wild Bill Blacklock and for my criticising Carr.
Are you saying Carr is spending what money he has wisely? If so, are you saying Ashley made a good choice in appointing a “top” chief scout/DoF?
Lilongwe Geordie
Jun 23, 2015 at 10:43 AM
Comment #51Blackley,
If Carr is our DoF, it is only a recent appointment. at the very earliest it would have to coincide with Charnley’s appointment as MD. Prior to that he was the chief scout, so the very earliest he could have wasted money is last summer – Rivi definitely, the others jury is probably out, although Cabella has a lot of work to do.
As Chief Scout, Carr prepares the lists and dossiers, but doesn’t make the final decision. He will make recommendations and tell them his thoughts, but that would be it.

I said they were stand out players in the inferior leagues they played in not the champions league mate.
You can manipulate stats to suit but Montpellier or Ajax were never gonna be champions league winners but i said these particular players were not out of their depth & looked impressive in my opinion.

Comment #54Blackley you need to take into account we can only buy players that want to come here and fit within our wage structure… Carr could well be doing the best with what is available both budget wise and actual player availablity.

Comment #55Is there a prevailing feeling that McClaren may eventually replace Carr as DOF and the Assistant Coach will progress to become the Head Coach in time? On the understanding that he/she has to accept a low wage in the meantime, before the riches of the becoming the lightening rod.

If Carr wanted to invest in one player not three, it is hard to imagine a guy like Ashley, who knows nothing about football, over-ruling a guy like Carr, whom he has appointed on a lucrative long term contract to spot the talent that will make him money.

It was just one example, at the end of the day it just highlights the fact that none of us know the recruiting policy in place or the retraints on the staff whom work within it.
Personally given the mega flops at other clubs, I think that even with our flops we are still doing ok… given that most are performing in positions and play styles they are not accustum to… could be worse could have wasted money on Falco like ManU or Mario like Liverpool

Comment #61Hard to judge Carr as we do not know who he has reccommended or if his top of the list recommendations were vetoed for whatever reason and then players further down the list we bought. He could clearly scout players upon the suggestion of others.
I am mystified at the suggestion he has a pot of money to work with for buying players.

You mention Carr’s gems. I struggle to think of any other than Perez, and it’s still very early days for him. He hasn’t made it yet, not by a long way.
The others are players who were very well known. Not necessarily by me, who’s doesn’t bother too much with world football in general. I’m thinking of Cabaye, Tiote, Janmaat, Cisse … all internationals.

See 45.
I’m not manipulating stats in the slightest. Of course they weren’t going to win the Champions league, that doesn’t really have any bearing on it mind. 6 Champions league games tells little of the suitability to adapt and player week in week out at a far higher level.
Still, I wasn’t the one who brought specific names into the equation. Mbiwa didn’t cut it here, a poor purchase. Cabella is struggling, looks too much like a show pony but could still make it if he adapts. Anita was a jack of all trades at Ajax, he left because Ajax couldn’t guarantee him a spot in centre mid.

He and the tea boy have a pot of money. It might not be a big pot, as big as we’d like, but it’s big enough to waste big time on first team duck eggs, as well as wages on ghost players who take up valuable reserve team places.

I quite like Anita as a player, he hasn’t regressed in my eyes, just isn’t suited. I haven’t decided on Cabella. Far too little end product, and too many tricks just for the sake of doing tricks. There is no need for it, and he needs to cut it out if he is to become the player that he promised to be when at Montpellier.
Mbiwa was maybe unlucky in how he was used, but he never convinced me. Maybe he needed longer to settle, but he isn’t the type of centre half I’d be looking for at the club, so I’m not that bothered about his departure. Not replacing him however….

Doesnt matter if they are well known, part and parcel of a scouts job is not only finding players, but finding the deals and its also about buying players that are about to hit form… which again it would be hard to argue that those players mentioned hit some of their best form here at Newcastle.
What worries me is the wasted money on complete gambles when that money could have been used to complete alleged deals with Gomis or Benteke or Aubameyang… seems crazy to me that we apparently lost each of those due to a couple of million.

Comment #74Blackley – how big is the pot of money you refer to that Carr has at his disposal.
On the scouting front debate. The club admitted it has made mistakes but we do not know what they think the mistakes were – we’ll probably never get to know. If the scouting process/hiring process was included in the mistakes they made it should be rectified – therefore what has gone on before is now probably irrelevant – if they change.
We’ll soon find out what the standard is when we start signing players.

You ask, “Ha ha, the gall of him, where have I suggested that good ‘ol Mikey hasn’t given him any money.”
When I was talking about nothing more than all the money Ashley has given Carr, you said I was calling Graham Carr out for not getting more money out of Ashley. Where did I say that?
You said I was calling Carr out on ” … his powers of persuasion in getting the worlds tightest billionaire in parting with his cash.” See your post 9 above.
And that in itself suggests that you blame Ashley for not parting with his cash for Carr to spend.
You need to follow the argument and remember what you say.

Comment #80Just read on twitter that Horst Heldt the Schalke manager has apparently told paper Derwesten that Matip wants to stay at Schalke & no interest shown by Newcastle.
Not sure but Geis signing shouldn’t have much impact on Matip as Geis midfielder & Matip predominantly a cb.
