Ever since Harry Redknapp accepted the manager job at Newcastle in January of 2008 to replace the fired Sam Allardyce, and then changed his mind the next day – Harry has always said good things about Newcastle United.
There was news late last night in the Express that Newcastle were again favorites to sign Charlie Austin from QPR, and Harry was QPR manager most of last season managing Austin, until he resigned in early February of this year.
Harry Redknapp – gives the thumbs up for Austin to sign for Newcastle
Many think that Charlie Austin would be a great number 9 for Newcastle United, and certainly if we do manage to sign him it was be a big boost to the fans.
Newcastle fans need something good to happen in this summer’s transfer window – like we sign three or four really good players.
It seems like Newcastle, Southampton, Chelsea and West Ham are the four clubs still interested in signing the 25 year-old striker.
Harry has put a post up on www.kicca.com and Harry thinks Newcastle would be his best destination:
“A move to Newcastle would be the best one for Charlie Austin,” “He’s 25 and he’s scored some good goals and I think Newcastle would be a good move for him and a good challenge.”
“He’s a good lad and knows Steve McClaren from when Steve was at QPR and I reckon he’ll do well at Newcastle.” “He’s rumored to be on Chelsea’s radar as well but no disrespect to him, he won’t make their starting line-up.”
“They only play one up front and he’s not going to replace Diego Costa.”
That’s a very good point Harry makes about Chelsea – and Loic Remy played well when he got a chance last season, but he didn’t get many chances because of the great form of Diego Costa.
And the rumors now are that Loic wants to move on so he can play more than he does at Stamford Bridge.
We had all but given up hope that we can sign Charlie Austin, but there looks to still be a chance.
Newcastle need to get a (big) shot of ambition and make every effort possible to sign this lad – he would be simply great for Newcastle next season – and it could be a great move for Charlie too.
Comments welcome.

Comment #42If Colo and Willo stay, we need to get Steph Houghton in to show them how to attack a ball from s corner and score. But I’m not sure you can teach bravery.

Comment #47We have Willo, Collocini, STaylor and Dummet with Curtis Good and the Forest lad to possibly feature at some stage. In the eyes of the bean counter we actually have a surplus, goals against mean nothing once you’ve got 36 or 40 points.

I can’t.

Comment #51Blackley – Ashley is by far the worst owner. Freddie and SJH at least provided players that filled the stadium, thrilled the fans, scored goals, even the odd shot at Cups and Leagues. Ashley offers none of that which is why I am amazed people still go!

Lord Westwood, Gordon McKeag, and Freddie Shepherd were worse. In fairness Sir John Hall did well for a little while.

Comment #54I’m wondering if the fake jib and welshie were simply a means of portraying the real ones in a less awful light. A bit like having a headache and sticking a pin in your toe for an hour. The relief of taking said pin out probably makes you forget the headache for a while.
A very short while.

Comment #55I don’t really know the provenance of it Clinath.
It is a phrase I’ve always understood the import of without ever questioning it.
Its origins may be in those caught stowing away on ships who were forced to work their passage to make amends for pushing their luck.
I would be keen to be corrected.
I wonder who will be first?

I think Welshie has been looking for a way back after his career-ending diatribe against all things Newcastle after betty slaughtered him a week or so ago.
Fake Welshie, Welshie’s Sheep, and Fake Jib have all added to the sense of a fair-minded fellow cruelly traduced, while sounding exactly like their original authors.

Comment #61Yeah but all of those defenders are hopeless little Juan Kerr’s apart from Coloccini.
Our squad for next season will hopefully look like this:
Krul
Janmaat Matip/Mbodji Van Dijk Kolorov
Thauvin Grenier Sissoko Cabella Konoplyanka
Mitrovic/Austin
Subs:
Darlow
Anita
Coloccini
Lascelles
Haidara
Siem De Jong
Marveaux
Aarons
Tiote
Cisse
Perez
Bas Dost
All those former first players who haven’s been mentioned can sod off elsewhere.
We might still be short in the middle of the park with that squad.

I did like the link to Van Ginkel, we have needed a cabaye replacement for ages… But first a CB is mandatory, we need about 6 players in this window and at least half of them need to have premier league experience because we have no idea how long they will take to adjust, it’s very risky.
Vlaar, Elmohamedy, schaar.
van ginkel
Austin/dost
followed with the forest lads would be alright.
Sell sissoko, his only reason for wanting to stay here is because his French manager advised it. He can help fund these transfers.
Loan: Armstrong, Barlaser, Kemen and Roberts and even Satka.
sell:
sissoko
gouffran
obertan
Colo
bigirimana(shame)
vuckic
Team could be:
Krul
Janmaat-Vlaar-Schaar-Haidara
Tiote
Cabella-Van Ginkel-De Jong-Aarons
Dost/Austin/Perez/Cisse
Bench:
Darlow
lascelles/Taylor
Perez
abeid
elmohamedy
Cisse

“So just to be clear. Was I right or wrong to say you need profit or borrowing to buy players?”
“I certainly wouldn’t want to see them borrowing at the expense of the fans of the future. So I’d like to see every NUFC owner make a profit first and then use that to invest in players second.”
Just picked up on your afterthoughts. Your use of the half truth is not a particularly strong debating tactic. Naughty step for you old boy.
It is your conclusion in the second quote after you dismiss the borrowing option which is hopelessly out of step with reality.
Hope that clears it up for you.
I agree with you that blog discissions of money matters are valid, given the model we are supposed to be following provides a lot of cover for lack of investment in the team by Ashley. It really is a question of speculate to accumulate in football. Spend money on the playing side and you get silverware back as a result. When the Toon were big spenders is when we did best in the EPL and Europe.
It is an art and not a science as player spending does not automatically lead to winning things but is sure as hell increases your chances dramatically in the medium term. Good players also tend to play better football (providing the head coach isn’t a total Fwit. Our track record is woeful the last few years and we probably were only just good enough to avoid relegation the both times we managed to scramble up the table in the aslt coiple of games. Either year we could have easily ended up with the Villa outcome.
Can’t compete financially is really won’t compete financially as the rewards from player trading are as good for the big man as trying to win something. This is what is dooming us to the eternal tedium of mid table targets. I really do not believe the man’s PR interview the other week.
Austin and a couple of other signings will not provide us with a side that can challenge on a regular basis and 8-9 years is surely long enough for him to learn how football works as a business – especiallywith his allegedly prodigious business acumen..

Comment #65Do you people realize when somebody is constantly
making you idiots? People think bcs Ashley gave some interview something is going to change? He said that only because of season ticket sale, not because he thinks that. Do not buy season tickets, lot of people do that only because they have boring lives and killing few hours with visiting SJP.

We could not avoid moderation. Permanent moderation of that name, even with just “testing” written.

Comment #77I have a hard time chastising anyone who opts to renew a season’s ticket. I don’t live in Newcastle, and as an ardent supporter for many years I cant really say for certain what I would do if I had the opportunity to attend SJP every fortnight. I respect that it is very much an individual decision. However, what I cannot condone is the Ashley apologists who sit on their hands while he robs us of our pride, and condemns us for wanting glory. Blackley is only partly right about him…..he could be a great owner for Newcastle but he chooses to rub our noses in it instead. Much as he does with his SD clientele.
