This Could Be Steve McClaren’s Back-Room Staff

11:29 pm, Thursday, June 25th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 6 Comments

There was news earlier today that Ian Cathro will be named as the Newcastle assistant manager at Newcastle, and news in the Chronicle tonight is that Alessandro Schoenmaker will be named as Head of Sports Science.

Schoenmaker held the same position over the last year at Derby County and he has also worked with Steve at FC Twente, Wolfsburg and Nottingham Forest .

Steve McClaren – head coach at Newcastle

So Steve McClaren has got to be close to naming his backroom staff, with Steve Black coming in as the new fitness guru – and Steve will replace Dave Billows, who was our fitness coach last season but his contract has not been renewed at Newcastle.

It was one of our worst seasons ever at Newcastle for injuries, and that impacted the side big time throughout the season.

Eric Steele is also expected to come in as the new goalkeeper coach.

What we’re not sure about is whether Paul Simpson will come in from Derby County as the assistant manager and Ian Cathro could come in as the first team coach rather than as assistant manager

So this could be the new coaching team at Newcastle

Steve McClaren – head coach
Paul Simpson – assistant manager
Ian Cathro – first team coach
Eric Steele – goalkeeping coach
Steve Black – fitness coach
Alessandro Schoenmaker – Head of Sports Science

That looks a very good team, and one area we have to improve  is our injury record  – because last season was an absolute nightmare because of our injuries.

If Steve can announce his coaching team tomorrow it will be a positive move forward for Steve McClaren and Newcastle.

Then we have to get down to the business of getting new players into the club.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Wow. Alessandro Schoenmaker. The sexy name alone will impress the impressionable and calm the flappy birds for 12 hours or so. There was some real despair and concern that we’d not get a backroom team.

The trouble is these guys are second or third choice? Fourth? Who knows? Unfortunately, knowing these guys aren’t first choice, the players will have no respect for them. Now remind me. Who said that again?

Oh yes. It was Tuff. The same guy who said he wouldn’t kick another player in revenge for that other player kicking him three times. Either Tuff has never played the game or he’s the Marquis of Queensbury. Hmmm. What do we reckon?

Andy woodman is still here. NUFC with wanting compensation from Cystal Palace. Derby has also held on Simpson wanting compensation.

I dont think AP wants woodman.

is that 28 year old any good to fill gaps when our squad is depleted come January?

Did Eric Steele not play for us years back. Never got in the first team but certainly was a regular in the reserves.

Overall this would be a great coaching team.
