Conflicting Reports About Newcastle Signing Florian Thauvin

8:44 am, Friday, June 26th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 101 Comments

Newcastle have been linked with Marseilles winger Florian Thauvin over the last week or so, and if you believe the recent news then Newcastle have already bid €15M (£10.7M) for the player, and then things get a little murky.

florian thauvin 99

Florian Thauvin – confusion on what the situation is

The Star reported yesterday that Newcastle put in an improved bid for Florian Thauvin, from the initial £10.7M bid, and Marseilles accepted the second bid.

But the report by Jason Mellor went on to say that Thauvin did not want to come to Newcastle and turned us down,  as he holds out for a move to north London – to either Arsenal or Tottenham.

Today another report in that same paper – the Star – this time by Ian Murtagh – says that Newcastle remain optimistic about being able to sign Thauvin, and will put in an improved bid in for the player from the initial £10.7M offer in the coming days.

So take your pick as to what’s true – if either one of them is.

Here’s their report on the snub and then their report on it looks good which came out very early today.

The new piece  of news in today’s  report is that the imminent move of Dimitri Payet to West Ham will not affect the move of Thauvin to Newcastle.

It’s always difficult to know which reports have any truth in them during any transfer window and most of them seem to be made up.

But yesterday there was some definite  optimism in the local papers, after we have tied up 28 year-old coach Ian Cathro – which is a bit of a coup for the club.

We expect Steve McClaren to announce his coaching team – maybe even today – with most reports saying Ian will come in as the assistant manager – and who knows we may even get a new player in before training starts next Wednesday.

Comments welcome.

Didn’t the ‘Star’ once report that Elvis had been found alive… on the moon?
I’d prefer the money spent on Charlie Austin if I had a choice!

  • 4 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 8:51 AM

We definitely need a winger, if we could shift Obertron we could do with two. Unfortunately Aarons seems to have injury problems, so if we could bring in a right winger and another that could play either it would be a nice healthy competition for places.

  • 5 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 8:53 AM

I wonder if the board having two football people on it now might have more sway in convincing whoever that giving a sh1t crock a five year deal on low wages is no more cost effective than paying a top player the going rate on a three or four year deal.

  • 6 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 8:54 AM

What is Cabellas true position ?

  • 7 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 8:56 AM

I don’t know why Sameobi is being offered a new deal, surely SM has to see him first before that decision is made.

  • 8 LooneyToon41 // Jun 26, 2015 at 8:58 AM

From French Football Weekly about Thauvin :-

“Newspaper L’Equipe announced at the end of the season that his disappointing season had earned him a place on their worst team of the season, made up of their average ratings throughout the campaign. There is no way he was the worst, but it gives an idea of how much he has failed to live up to the promise and expectation.”

Hmmm.. doesn’t sound too good to be honest!

Hopefully Cathro will know of some quality bargains in the spanish league. Id love to have a decent playmaker from spain. A little known player like michu was as well.

  • 12 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:09 AM

No doubt he will, if only he could recommend a coach to take over PB to bring them on. I understand that Beardo needs to have some role at tge club but surely now it’s time to put everything right.

  • 13 Rotonda heights // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:12 AM

has cathro actually being confirmed as the number 2 or just part o the backroom team? I would hate to see Simpson become number 2 ahead of cathro.

  • 14 croftus5678 // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:16 AM

    @4 jfa

thuivin is a two sided winger and is very fast and tricky and also very strong but he’s not the worlds best and has been greatly over rated imo.

still though he is still learning the game and still of prem standards and a hell of a lot better than obertan so imo perfect to cover both wings if we can get him for around the 12mil mark as he’s sure to go up in value.

i would start rolando on left and thuivin on right and use cabella as impact unless of injury then stick cabella on right and thuivin on left.

  • 15 croftus5678 // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:18 AM

i dont think anyone has been confirmed yet mate but everyone is reporting like the deals done ! even sky ect who i normally believe.

The injury list does not make for pretty reading and makes you wonder why we are consistently at the top end of the injury league season in season out.
    unlucky….may be ??

  • 21 martoon // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:42 AM

I actually know Ian Murtagh (his son & my son are mates) and he is quite well connected and has a lot of contacts at NUFC. Even though it is the Star I could believe there is some fact in the story.

  • 22 Tsunki // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:43 AM

I remember the uselessness of the previous Thauvin shenanigans. I have a feeling this will all pan out the same way. I think we should take the hint.

  • 23 toonincheek // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:45 AM

I recall reading that match teams were selected baed on who had performed best in training during the week. I reckon this had the effect of players giving their all in training, at the expense of sustaining injuries.

Does anyone have any figures on how many injuries were sustained during training compared with those sustained during actual matches?

  • 24 geordie157 // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:46 AM

I’m surprised we haven’t been linked with Vadillo of Betis, not sure if they gained promotion back to La Liga, but he’s been listed as an exciting prospect for a few seasons now.

With Cathro coming in (if confirmed) i wonder if we’d have any chance of getting Fegouhli (cant spell that one) or even more ambitious Alcacer

  • 25 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:47 AM

    Interesting theory that mind.

  • 26 lesh // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:47 AM

Having sufficient quality players to compete for places is a luxury that Ashley’s original ‘Purples’ business model wouldn’t allow.

However, as the finances seem to be in better shape these days, let’s hope McClaren can coax him to seeing the sense of having sufficient ‘Purples’ to encourage competition for places. That coupled with additional payments based on games played could help encourage it.

They know it makes sense…. maybe but probably not.

In fact the latest article from 2 days ago seems
    to hint at Willo staying

  • 30 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:57 AM

The ‘noises’ coming out of the club seem like it’s heading in a different direction despite the lack of transfer activity, but before I, for one start getting carried away, you have to remember that we are dealing with proven liars and masters of spin. Only very recently they told one of their most publicily loyal lickspittle he had a job in the new order before getting rid.

  • 31 optimistic prime // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:58 AM

On Sammy, IMO the club only offered him a contract as that makes them eligible for compo. Not contract offer no compo.

  • 32 Jib // Jun 26, 2015 at 9:58 AM

I could be wrong but , I think the purples concept was solely Llambias’s

  • 34 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 10:03 AM

  • 36 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 10:04 AM

I could be wrong but I think the purples was solely Mike Ashleys idea !

  • 37 Tsunki // Jun 26, 2015 at 10:06 AM

The idea of players being selected for match day solely on training performance is stupidly simplistic so I hope that wasn’t true. Playing against team mates knowing their style, strengths and weaknesses, week in week out, is no indicator of how they fare against the unknown (largely) quantity of the opposing team they face on match day. IF that was the method employed, no wonder we had so many injuries and such poor team selections every week for who knows how long.

  • 38 jazzyp // Jun 26, 2015 at 10:07 AM

may be there is some truth in the story, But why make Thauvin priority signing when other positions are more concerning as we all know.
If we are willing to pay handsomely for this kid. Surely Austin or any CF would take priority first and foremost

  • 39 Tsunki // Jun 26, 2015 at 10:09 AM

  • 40 croftus5678 // Jun 26, 2015 at 10:09 AM

    @33 jfa

it’ll be a deal that we can not lose on that even a championship club can easily afford his wages so we can just ship him out on loan if needs be and they will have all kinds of clauses in it that only an idiot would sign it.

  • 41 Jib // Jun 26, 2015 at 10:09 AM

  • 44 Jail for Ashley // Jun 26, 2015 at 10:11 AM

Personally I think that the CB position is by far the priority position to fill, two of them with Willo and STaylor being moved on, unless our Grenwich born fist pumper can be fitted out with a toughened fibre glass skeletal frame.

I’ve had a look through articles of the time and Llambias seems to have taken all the credit (and lots of mockery ) for the concept. I remember thinking at the time “what is he on about , he’s lost the plot , Ashley won’t like that”

Newcastle have long been linked with making a move for Mitrovic, and a new report in HLN has claimed that they are ready to submit a formal offer for his services.

It is expected that the Magpies will submit a £13 million offer for his services, having seen Premier League rivals Swansea City fail in an approach of roughly £10 million.

It is stated in the report that Mitrovic favours a move to Benfica, the main club rivalling Newcastle for his services now, but it is believed that the Portuguese outfit are not wealthy enough to make the same offer as the Magpies.

Whilst not a boost for Newcastle, as Mitrovic could reject a transfer even if a fee is agreed with Anderlecht, it certainly appears as if the Tyneside club are leading the race for his signature.

SEE ALSO: The in-demand winger who Newcastle must go all-out to sign this summer

Serbian international Mitrovic, 20, has built a promising reputation with Anderlecht in recent months, scoring an impressive 27 goals in 50 games during the 2014/15 season.

His consistent goalscoring threat is something needed at St James’ Park, and although doubts will remain about his ability until he has proven himself in a top league, it Newcastle can sign him for roughly £13 million, they will be making a move in the right direction ahead of next season.

Would Mitrovic be a good signing for Newcastle?
I thought we had moved on from this target but obviously not.
Again what is and is not to believed is down to each individual, As we seemed to be bidding for everyone and I find it hard to believe after all these years of suffering, that Mashley will sanction such a massive war chest

So assuming you have 4 in MF with dejong playing in front of cisse or new CF, can we play both Thauvin and Cabella in the same side?
You could maybe play one on each wing but would they defend thevway SMc would expect?
Could we play a MF of Cabella-Tiote-Sissoko-Thauvn?

  • 86 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jun 26, 2015 at 11:11 AM

Personally would still prefer Austin over Mitrovic similar players but Austin is proven in the premier league and is more likely to want to say with us for a few seasons can see Mitrovic and his agent touting themselves to clubs the following season publicly like Sissoko

  • 87 Tsunki // Jun 26, 2015 at 11:13 AM

Lindisfarne oh I thought it was Mu?oz. Sorry. 🙂

Yep he looks like he could be a bargain and fit into a pl back line with colo, even though colo has few fans ( including me) for his bottling abilities he’s still a decent cb and could help this lad fit in. But it’s all just supposition. Well probably get a french version of Willo. Only without the heading ability. Oh wait we did have Mbiwa…. 😉

  • 88 Tsunki // Jun 26, 2015 at 11:18 AM

Same old problem player scores for fun in the Dutch league which is a few decent teams at the top dominating the lower half by quite a gulf. but can he do anything in the PL where the toughness of opposition is consistent pretty much from top to bottom of the table. LDJ did well there, tanked here, then apparently started well again when he returned. He’d probably do better going to benfica. Similar league setup there.

  • 89 jazzyp // Jun 26, 2015 at 11:21 AM

Never mentioned Cisse or Mr T as there is a good chance they could be sold this summer.

  • 94 jazzyp // Jun 26, 2015 at 11:25 AM

I felt sorry for Ldj. Shot of confidence, came in to a struggling team and was made to play out of position in a more defensive role behind Remy.
Look at Ba when played out of position to accommodate Cisse. And visa versa, They were pants.
I would have sooner paid the 2 mill for LDJ then 6.5 mill for Riviere

  • 95 martoon // Jun 26, 2015 at 11:26 AM

Jazzyp @84 – Looks good but I would always find a place for Colback – I know he is not everyone’s favourite but I think he is the hard working midfielder that every team needs at least one of.

  • 96 jazzyp // Jun 26, 2015 at 11:28 AM

Do you not think Colback or a rejuvenated Anita would be able to bring us that ??
Don’t get me wrong Tiote on his day is a cracking player. But they are very rare and he has been more of a liability of late

  • 97 Lindisfarne // Jun 26, 2015 at 11:30 AM
