Newcastle Linked With Real Madrid Central Midfielder

10:18 am, Friday, July 3rd, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 114 Comments

There is a report that Newcastle and Steve McClaren may be interested in Real Madrid’s young central midfielder Omar Mascarell, who was on loan at Derby County last season, and Derby have an option to buy him, which they are now said to be considering.

Omar Mascarell

Omar Mascarell – in action for Derby last season

But other clubs are also said to be interested in signing the 22 year-old who was impressive for Derby last season,

Omar has two years left on his contract at Madrid and was one of the players who was out towards the end of the season.

His absence coincided with Derby’s dramatic late collapse last season, as they finished out of the play-off spots in 8th place.

Steve McClaren was fired by Derby a few weeks ago, and they brought in Paul Clement from Real Madrid, so you would think Omar would be willing to sign on at Derby since Paul presumably knows him well.

McClaren is now at Newcastle which explains Newcastle’s interest in the youngster.

Omar was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands, and he joined Real Madrid’s youth system at the age of 17, arriving from local club CD Laguna de Tenerife.

So maybe he is aware of what Ayoze Perez did at Newcastle last season which could help Newcastle if we are really interested in signing him.

Mascarell has played once for the full Real Madrid side and 52 times for Real Madrid Castilla – their reserve side – and he played 30 times while on loan at Derby.

The report is in HTC Sport who are citing sources close to the Derby club.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

People claiming that Marseille want 15 Million for Thauvin need to understand how the exchange rate works. They want €15 for him, we’re offering £15 million for him and the other fella. In other words that’s roughly £10 Million for Thauvin and £5 million the defender.

  • 2 Rotonda heights // Jul 3, 2015 at 10:37 AM

very good player, a real string puller in a good passing team. We should get him.

Despite my doubts about Shteeve, a couple of things have made him grow on me somewhat.

I love the fact that they actually trained with a ball, which was total anathama to Pardew and seemingly he really was dealt a bad hand with the injuries to his top players ruining Derby’s run in.

  • 3 Rotonda heights // Jul 3, 2015 at 10:38 AM

exactly with the pound so strong against the euro right now it makes sense to buy european based players

  • 4 JDdubai // Jul 3, 2015 at 10:39 AM

think Thauvin will be signed at some point, seems to be a repeated effort to get him(if these bids are true).

Still dont think any of our actual realistic targets have gone elsewhere so until i see Austin or whoever holding up another teams shirt i will continue to cling on to my optimism..

  • 5 John Tudor // Jul 3, 2015 at 10:43 AM

2 maybe 3 defenders and 2 strikers needed not more midfielders get a grip macca

  • 6 BandB // Jul 3, 2015 at 10:44 AM

Back pages full this morning of the shock news that McClaren has introduced a thing called “a ball” to training.
These are just the kind of revolutionary innovations we gambled on when we amazed the football world by snatching wonder coach Supermac from under the noses of nobody.

I see the idea that he just needs time to get the best out of current squad, and maybe signings can wait, is steadily being wheedled into our complacent skulls.

  • 7 John Tudor // Jul 3, 2015 at 10:48 AM

    who’s buying into this crap

  • 8 BandB // Jul 3, 2015 at 10:48 AM

And when did that idea that only those who express obsequious support for every action and inaction of a regime are “sensible people” become an established fact…for adults?

  • 9 mickalfas // Jul 3, 2015 at 10:53 AM

Surely its easier to invest in the squad, instead of the spin doctors coming out with all this drivel
Talking, meetings when everyone else is buying
They’re starting to sound like politicians instead of football people

Well I was called all sorts of things last night by Munster Mag because I have failed to ser the hype surrounding this so called strong coaching staff…

…I get what we had before was far from adequate but calling this one strong seems stretching it to me!

And doesn’t warrant the tone! It’s a bit like Senor Tuff called it just before about some posters just having it in for others.

God forbid anyone should resort to that!

Are you accusing me of being repetitive?

Rotonda…Are you for real? Step outside of that glass house before continuing to throw that particular stone.

  • 19 lesh // Jul 3, 2015 at 11:09 AM

Amazing innit? A ball? Used in training? What’ll McClaren think of next?

What a revolutionary idea. Trying to get players to actually play football after the years of rubbish served up latterly by the self-professed best coach in the Prem and before him, Pardew.

Nah, it’ll never catch on at SJP, they don’t do football but believe they’re in business to make money by buying and selling players!

    Hope I’m wrong though.

Sorry for not getting back to your question about my suggestion that McClaren might have gained more influence on the so-called Football Board than originally envisaged.

No, my suggestion wasn’t made with tongue in cheek. He’s been with us for a few weeks, weeks of Charnley twiddling his thumbs, taking forever to appoint Mac’s backroom staff, dithering over potential signings and his frustrations may have been shown by his relative silence.

However and if it’s true that Moncur’s had a view on Charnley’s reluctance to pay realistic fees for targets, I wouldn’t be surprised if Charnley’s been at the receiving end of pressure from his board-colleagues.

However, we can but wait and see what comes out in the wash.

Anyway, you get back to your morning coffee and be vigilant when assessing pretty young things that parade past you hoping to catch the eye of the bronzed adonis that is you!

    Enjoy your day.

    😉 ????

Lesh…Thanks for the response. We shall see indeed. I’m just a little confused as to why getting in the coaching team and an email from McClaren to clarify that in July signals that he’s getting further control.

Doesn’t mean he hasn’t, I’m just not seeing where he has. Not that much longer to wait though.

Coffee time – Sadly the women of Ibiza will have to survive another day without this “bronzed adonis” – If you could see my tanned arms (left more so than the right from driving, face and neck – you’d get a right laugh from that comment.

  • 27 BandB // Jul 3, 2015 at 11:16 AM

If this management gets the slightest feedback from the fans that we’ll settle for one or two signings, that’s what we’ll get. And maybe less.

There are people on here trying to ring-fence the discussion to training and tactics. They even want transfer speculation placed out of bounds. We know why. They are by and large the same “sensible posters” I refer to above.

You may think you are being a good fan by trying to close down the debate. But you are not. You are making it easier for the so-called board to relax.

we are not Chelsea or Manure but we r jst studying the situation.

Making Head Coach a board of director is a good move he is well informed wats going on. I think Mcclaren wants to first see his players analyse them then we move on. He is an experienced coach he does nt need to know a good player and a bad one. I believe every thing that is happening he has a say on it

Having both McClaren and Carr on the board is neither clever nor revolutionary! It’s Ashley showing he doesn’t know anything about football and thinking we don’t either!

…don’t even get me starter on Moncur 😉

This is the current squad sorted into 3 Groups for ease of understanding.
I don’t think it is the crisis some are wailing about , factor in players back from serious injury plus some decent coaching , I am quite upbeat about 2015/16

Out big time for whatever reason:

    Siem De Jong Rolando Aarons
    Haris Vu?ki? Mehdi Abeid
    Sylvain Marveaux Gael Bigirimana
    Cheick Tiote
    Steven Taylor Jamaal Lascelles
    Massadio Haidara Curtis Good
    Karl Darlow
    First Team regulars

    Tim Krul
    Daryl Janmaat Mike Williamson
    Fabricio Coloccini Paul Dummett
    Vurnon Anita Jack Colback
    Remy Cabella Moussa Sissoko
    Ayoze Perez Emmanuel Riviere
    Papiss Demba Cissé Yoan Gouffran
    The Bairns

    Freddie Woodman
    Kevin Mbabu Jamie Sterry
    Macaulay Gillesphey
    Lubomir Satka Shane Ferguson
    Olivier Kemen Dan Barlaser
    Callum Roberts
    Adam Armstrong Alex Gilliead

    will die for
Having McClaren and Carr on the board means nothing really unless it actually makes a difference which thus far it hasn’t

We are slower out of the transfer blocks than usual and if McClean hasn’t analysed the squad by now he needs a head shake because its quite clear we are weak and where the key issues are

  • 39 lesh // Jul 3, 2015 at 11:28 AM

Yes, we’ll have to wait and see but you ask for indicators of Mac’s possibly increased influence.

It’s interesting that after the cock-up that was the McClaren appointment announced to the Ckub’s media partners, we should see a communication made to the world at large – in McClaren’s name. It suggests that he’s had a concern about Charnley’s policy of silence!

And, his comments seem to suggest that he’s got more influence over transfers than Charnley anticipated.

And more importantly, you can’t be swanning about with a one-side tan – you’ll be looking like Tommy Cooper on his hat sketches! Why not try to get some balance – try driving around in reverse to get the sun on the pasty bits!

  • 40 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 3, 2015 at 11:28 AM

@35, spot on mate. We don’t often agree, but why on earth would a Head Coach and Chief Scout be on a board?? It makes no sense.

It goes against the definition of a Head Coach, and goes against the role as they described back in Jan/Feb. As for Carr, he should be out scouting and working with his scout tam, not involved at Boardroom level. Moncur is merely an attempt to placate Geordie fans by having a club ‘legend’ on board.

  • 45 Ibizatoon // Jul 3, 2015 at 11:35 AM

Lesh…Who did this email go out to though? Is it ST holders?

For me, it just looks like the club will continue to be overly protective with information.

Between preferred media partners, the fans forum and now these little email sessions from Steve, I don’t see this as a start of a new dawn of open communication.

I still don’t get what they’re worried about. If it’s all good, shout it from the rooftops. Stop waiting and dilly dallying. Surely they know they’ve used up most of the faith? Or perhaps it turns out that they haven’t afterall.

  • 46 Lindisfarne // Jul 3, 2015 at 11:37 AM

“”The squad at the moment is the same one that broke the record for consecutive top-flight defeats.”” MD@Chron.

What inference do the existing players make if no players that will compete for places are brought in?

We all no new players are needed and part of the reason is that for at least the past two seasons the first team has not been challenged. Whether that be for positions or in Cup competitions and this is one of the mistakes the ‘Board’ should be admitting to, “Not taking the sport seriously”.

thanks for pointing out what we already know! ie we have a mediocre squad and need quality brought in and many released. Yes, SM will get more out of them than useless Pardew but surely he’s not gonna go through the squad giving the likes of Vuckic and Bigs a chance as they will never be good enough. I have a feeling it will take him 10 games to find out what we all know!

Oh the complacency of Charnley is unbelievable! SPEND SPEND SPEND please!

  • 55 Lindisfarne // Jul 3, 2015 at 11:45 AM

In a marketing sense sending ST holders emails with unique club news makes a lot of sense. I have long thought that the Membership price could be raised with the additional benefits of access to nufcTV, communication with players / coaches and a general raising of the clubs image.

Typically however the club is choosing the more counter productive policy of expecting members to pay more for a non competitive event.

Agreed that the McClaren mail was issued to STs, former STs by NUFC and as such, one is conditioned to be cynical.

However, what’s prompted this sudden flurry of information? It certainly won’t be Charnley waking up to the benefits of good PR – he’s had weeks, nay months to speak! Leopard, spots comes to mind.

Maybe Moncur’s picked up the fans’ discontent in the course of his trying to persuade folk to renew their STs?

    Whatever, Charnley’s been told what’s what – I think!

The problem NUFC have now is that because of Ashley everything they do is under the microscope and seen in a cynical way, now I am as guilty as that as the next person but with the email I dont get that feeling (I could be wrong but I dont back handed nature of this one)

I think its just a gesture from McClaren (and the coaching staff) to the fans they could contact directly.

  • 87 Ibizatoon // Jul 3, 2015 at 12:54 PM

Lesh…Fair enough mate. We shall see- It just seemed to be more a hope than anything – but then I am one cynical mofo these days. Justifiably I believe.

Yo…Basically anyone who has been part of their payment system in the past.

mickalfas…The thought has crossed my mind. More than anything, it does appear to be a case of further seperation amongst fans. Those good fans, the real ones, the ones who wont question and then those who need convincing.

Why not, as you say, just stick to normal club statements – to anyone who is interested?

  • 88 will die for the toon army // Jul 3, 2015 at 12:55 PM

The Captain will come from the old players not a new player. That’s logic.

  • 89 Ibizatoon // Jul 3, 2015 at 12:56 PM

nut meg…It would appear you are correct. Members, ST holders (current and ex), etc.

  • 90 WWSBRD // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:02 PM

Aye if uve every bought a ticket to the game or merch etc online then I imagine u would of gotten the email

I dont think I paid to be a member…might have to now though think that was brought in last season?

Personally I quite liked how the club announced the coaching staff but I must be in the minority haha

  • 91 geordie157 // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:13 PM

Saw a lot of Derby last season and Mascarell struggled to get a starting place for most of the season, with Hendrick, Hughes and Bryson the key men in midfield.

He’s got lots of potential but i doubt there’s any truth in this link.

Would be nice to end the week with Toon seal 15mill deal for Wijnaldum.

  • 92 Tinman // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:19 PM

The Euro will get crushed in the next week or so, maybe we will wait. Wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Ashley wanted to get value.

Any Greek players we could get in for 5 quid?

  • 93 lesh // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:19 PM

    Lucky you

As,I’ve been excluded from the Sun site cos I haven’t paid, U want to be a Preferred Media Partner.

That’s presumably been Ashley’s thinking – exclude media organs from access to Nufc tittle-tattle and they’ll queue up to pay for it?

He’s shown himself ti have been ill-advised – the misguided, greedy idiot.

  • 94 lesh // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:21 PM

    * you must be a preferred media partner.

    Silly me!

  • 95 carl // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:22 PM

I am sure you will agree that when it comes to bloggers they can be a diverse group. Since commencing posting on here again, I have been constantly stalked by a blogger who claims to be convinced that I am hiding behind someone else’s keyboard. All this and damning me with faint praise. Anyone using ” they” and spelling gullible wrongly are equally part of the problem.
It’s about as dumb as using “they” for dog walkers when you mean those who can’t be bothered to keep their mutts under control and haven’t appreciated the concept that tidying up after them doesn’t mean hanging the bag in a tree. I encountered such a near mishap whilst out running this morning.
I do hope we can in the future chat again about football and NUFC.
As I said in my earlier post, silly people say and do daft / stupid things. In his defence he’s clearly not young and I think I remember reading that he has arthritis. It’s usually much better though in warm weather. Maybe, you are less tolerant in your advancing years. My policy is just be far more considerate to others. Who’s keyboard are you hiding behind, doh!

  • 96 mickalfas // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:25 PM

At least we’ll get to keep Abeid a little longer ,Panathanaikos getting €60 a day out of the cashpoint,it could take s while!

  • 97 WWSBRD // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:26 PM

I must be! I clicked on it again and still showed me what I saw originally, has a pay for extra content at the bottom but doesn’t keep me from seeing the content of the age

Ah well teaches me for posting links, never been my think anyway

On the media thing its pathetic how Ashley’s going about it but cant say I care all that much just shows them up more and more. The local rags I feel slightly sorry for but they dont exactly push to get information so its no great loss

Ukraine Ketsbaia target signed up by Sevilla.

  • 99 carl // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:33 PM

Beware of a Greek offering you an IOU!

  • 100 Magpie Season // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:39 PM

    Will die for….,

Mate, I know when new coaches arrive everyone gets a new chance to be evaluated by them so that is a reason why transfer activity has been nil.

However, there is also a numbers issue as our squad is still too small, even ifSM judges each of our current players to be world class & can play first team for Real Madrid. It is too small to be challenging for a Premier League season with the expectance of injuries as well as progressing deep into both cups. Even if everyone is a ronaldo, messi and terry in our squad in SM’s eyes, we will have to buy.

  • 101 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:44 PM

What’s the latest on money being spent at Little Benton? You would think the club would be keen to crack on with improving the place, not least so they can use it as a selling point to potential signings. The place is embarrassing. No wonder they struggled to get Cat 1 status. It is a monument to their lack of ambition and incompetence. It tells me that the club is going nowhere.

  • 102 carl // Jul 3, 2015 at 1:54 PM

A number of bloggers have asked the question as to why if McClaren is ambitious would he want to come to Newcastle! Well Mike Ashley has shown that he’s slow to pull the trigger on his managers. A bare minimum of staying clear of relegation will guarantee safety from the sack. The kind of manager we need to be after, someone who wants to make their mark on a club, who sees the need for a long-term project to achieve what they want to, will see that as the biggest positive of all. Fair play to SM without being asked he’s already said that a top 8 finish and a cup is his aim.
On another subject- I see QPR have today turned down a £ 12 million offer from Leicester for Austin. They want £15 million but probably would accept £13 million.

  • 103 Mister Tuff // Jul 3, 2015 at 2:01 PM

Beware of Ian Toon – hiding in a wooden horse.

  • 104 JDdubai // Jul 3, 2015 at 2:08 PM

I think regarding Austin that our hand will be forced. One of the other clubs will eventually bid the 15m and force us to match it, either Leicester, West Ham or someone else will bite the bullet before we do and then it becomes messy.

Really though, whats 3m nowadays, just use the cash from Pardews resignation for it ffs nd get in first to talk to him.

  • 105 expatmag // Jul 3, 2015 at 2:15 PM

I have been wondering why WHU would want Austin when they already have the likes of Carroll Sakho

  • 106 Moonraker15 // Jul 3, 2015 at 2:26 PM

I’m convinced we’re not gonna sign anyone until Wally has given the existing squad a tryout! After 10 games when we will be in the bottom 6 they will be talking about strengthening in the January window!

Board meetings with this lot must be a scream! It’s totally embarrassing, we a the laughing stock of the PL.

What on earth is the objective? Ashley surely can’t be doing this to make lots of money. Wtf was that interview all about?

I’m very frustrated as are most fans!

  • 107 Moonraker15 // Jul 3, 2015 at 2:27 PM

There is NO intention to sign Austin !

  • 108 Moonraker15 // Jul 3, 2015 at 2:32 PM

Premier league, the richest league in the world and we have spent nothing and we are one of the richest clubs.

One marquee signing changes everything don’t the get it? Is Charnley even working this weekend?

  • 109 carl // Jul 3, 2015 at 2:32 PM

We conceed far too many goals and don’t score enough. The priority is a goal scorer who can also preferably hold the ball up and a dominant quick CB.
I think it would be a mistake to write off some of last summer signings too quickly. It’s pointless unless you get an attractive offer for them. Take Giroud at Arsenal his signing took a season to pay off.

  • 110 Moonraker15 // Jul 3, 2015 at 2:49 PM

we also need a midfield creator, but I now think Wally has told the board he can deliver with the existing squad; he is after all very confident in his ability,a bit like Percy but with more substance!

What he doesn’t know about is how useless some of them are, like Riviere for example as is Cabella, freakin useless other than in a circus.

Don’t get me wrong like all toon fans I love a ball player but he is no where near the great hba who I think Wally could make effective.

  • 111 Moonraker15 // Jul 3, 2015 at 2:56 PM

west ham want Austin for one reason! He will score goals and whilst he’s far from world class he’s a steal these days at 15 MILLION!

Meanwhile, Wally has probably told Rivierre he will turn him into the new Shearer! Lol

  • 112 Moonraker15 // Jul 3, 2015 at 3:06 PM

I only hope Charnley isn’t trying to get clever with the money markets seeing the exchange rate changing. With all that money in the bank Ashley must have a permanent hard on!

We could easily challenge for top six now, but that would be showing too much ambition,

OMG how they have talked us down into a small club instead of the giant that we actually are!

  • 113 Munster Mag // Jul 3, 2015 at 4:35 PM

Mister Tuff, I used to like a lot of Ian Toon;s stuff. If he posts as Carl now, grand with me. Its the content, not the personality that counts. Too much fighting here IMO.

  • 114 Munster Mag // Jul 3, 2015 at 4:36 PM

But dont think I am afraid of a fight, ye mackem loving knobs ! 🙂
