It looks like Derby County have beaten Newcastle to Tom Ince, but it’s not clear to us if he was even a target, although the Magpies have been linked with him in a number of reports this summer.
There is news today of another Championship player we may be interested in, and that’s Reading’s young central midfielder Aaron Tshibola, who we assume Steve McClaren may know about after his last two seasons in the Championship with Derby County.
Aaron Tshibola – Reading’s 20 year-old central midfielder
Aaron is only 20 years old and is one for the future, and he spent the second half of the season at Hartlepool last season where he played 23 times, and on his Twitter account it looks like he has just signed a new deal at Reading.
His old deal ran through June of next year – so we’re not sure how long the extension is, but that will be to protect Reading’s interests in case he is sold.
The Mirror is reporting that both Newcastle and Aston Villa are interested in the youngster, who has made just one senior appearance for Reading.
That came at the start of last season, when he came on against Nottingham Forest as a late substitute in the 4-0 thrashing.
Newcastle are reported to have been scouting the 6’3″midfielder this season, and these young players will generally go straight into the development squad under Peter Beardsley.
If we have a good transfer window we should be bringing in about six first team players and maybe two or three development players like Tshibola.
Aaron has played once for the England U18 side.
Comments welcome.

Any fans who say they don’t want him back are just the exact type of people you find boring you to death with “ashley out” comments every 5 seconds.
I for one would love to see Cabaye back and Ashley out. Stick to posting on your ISIS blog you tw@t.

Comment #7Can anyone tell me whether Penfold has released any further statements about club policy and direction since January?
I can’t help but feel that as fans we’re once again being left to assume certain things have changed within the setup, when if you read those statements in January, the future was explained fairly clearly by our dear MD.
We seem to have a situation at the minute where fans are saying that it’ll be McLaren who is pointing the club towards players he wants, and that is likely the reason behind any delay in signings.
WILL THEY HAVE A SAY ON TRANSFERS?
“The new head coach will have to set out to us what his playing style is, what his philosophy is and what he looks for in his team because that then impacts on what we look for in terms of recruitment. It all works together.”
“We want someone who sees the bigger picture because my thinking will always be medium to long-term. When people talk about what we’re going to do in this transfer window, I am looking at the next transfer window and the window after and what impact it will have on that. Are there better opportunities if we wait three or four months rather than committing now?
It’s trying to find that balance but also an individual in a head coach that trusts us. If we say ‘You aren’t going to get that now but you will in the summer’, it’s someone who is prepared to say ‘OK’ and trusts us to do that.
It’s also someone that for example, if we were to get an offer for a player that is at a value that we want to take, isn’t nervous about getting a replacement. There has to be a trust.”
If there has been a change in that policy, which some seem to be suggesting as simple logic, then surely an updated club statement should have been made?
Which leads me on to what I personally have a much bigger issue with at NUFC…communication.
“I think we do communicate but we need to find a better way to communicate.
Our view was that Alan was the one who was front and centre and will take all of the questions on all areas of the club. Alan was then left, sometimes, in a difficult position answering questions that he probably wasn’t best suited to answer.
This is an opportunity for us with a new head coach coming in – there’s more clarity about his role and what he does. His role is coaching and that’s what he can talk about.
If that’s the case it’s only right that I then support him in terms of the messaging going out. If I’m saying ‘Only talk about team selection and the games’ there needs to be another voice.
I think the information has been out there, through the fan’s forum and through the statements, but it’s how we get it out there that needs to improve.”
Where is this other voice? Who is telling us what is going on?
Again I am left wondering why we are always left to assume and second guess them. Who does that benefit?

Comment #13Simple logic tells one that while McClaren has not even seen his sides play in a friendly yet , plunging into the market when he has 7 friendlies , and 4 premier league games to play before the widow shuts would be irresponsible .
Until he has a good idea of weaknesses in the squad , he cannot use the knowledge built up over seasons , of players he has had playing for him , and against his sides.

Comment #18Jib…I did see the original post. I had intended to quote you in my post. Wasn’t taking anything personally.
Does your theory on what would be irresponsible not get a little mixed up with what Charnley said back in January? I.e, the head coach has some input, but mainly they want to know about his style and philosophy, rather than which players he wants based on his “knowledge built up over seasons , of players he has had playing for him , and against his sides.”

Comment #22mag52 – throughout the season I’ll will try to compare/evaluate the abilities or lack of abilities – the coaching or lack of coaching between what Wally churns out and what your top manager (King Percy) churned out.
I will try to take account of new players brought in.
I’m sure other posters and Toon fans may also do similar comparisons or comment upon the attributes or lack of attributes of both.
It is a legitimate exercise. You may not do it as I suspect that shock horror Wally may be a better coach than Percy and you will not want to hear objective assessments when historically your subjective assessments of your hero may turn out to 180 degrees out.
Embrace the truth and be open minded.

Comment #25Jib…Quite honestly, I didn’t even read the article, I rarely do these days. I do note that you said “look at the subject of the article”, but doing my due dilligence I kept going.
Where do I think it came from?

Honestly Jib, if you’re going to send me somewhere to gain some info, make sure you’ve checked it yourself first.
Another tip – try not to use transfer speculation to prove a point. More often than not it wont go too well.

We will only get 1 CB max unless someone is moved out.
Colo(on big wages), Saylor(on canny wages), Willo, Dummett, Lascelles….we will only bring in 1 guy until 1 or 2 of those are moved on. Reckon it will be 1 this summer and 1 next when Colo, Willo and Saylor are out of contract.

However the only opinion that truly counts now is SM’s , and he may think with Lascelles ,Good ,Dummett ,Williamson ,Coloccini ,Satka and Macaulay Gillesphey we have enough cover

Quality not quantity, with those u mentioned, and Saylor who you left out, we had one of the worst defences in the league last season.
Just because we have a few who play there doesnt mean they are good enough.
We had the same argument a season or so ago with wingers. We had HBa, sammy, gouffran, ferguson, jonas etc and people said we had enough.
We need a big, takes no shit CB to organise and shout at everyone.

Comment #31Despite regularly calling for the Cheapskate to get his wallet out, I find it ironic that the wallet in question belongs to the Club and has sufficient funds to invest for itself. The aspiration of ‘being able to wipe our own noses’ has arrived, it is just that the supply of tissues has ceased through cost cutting.

Communication’s not one of Charnley’s strengths. Despite that, it is his responsibility to ensure that Club-fan communication is effective.
As is, he’s doing and done bugger all.
He’s obviously the sort who says things and hopes that time’ll pass and whatever he’s committed to’ll be forgotten about.
He’s got to understand that that just won’t do.
