Why Are Newcastle Not After Inter-Milan Star?

3:28 pm, Saturday, July 4th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 127 Comments

Stoke City reached an agreement with Inter Milan about three days ago for the transfer of 23 year-old Swiss International Xherdan Shaqiri, but Stoke are said to be dubious as to whether they can persuade Shaqiri to join them.

Shaqiri was born in Gjilan, in the old Yugoslavia but emigrated to Switzerland with his parents back in 1992,  and joined FC Basel in 2001 and is a product of their Youth Academy.

xherdan shaqiri -bayern-munich

Xherdan Shaqiri – after scoring while at Bayern Munich

He made his debut for Basel back in July 2009 when he was 17 – in Basel’s opening game against FC St. Gallen – and he came to prominence in 2009-2010 season when Basel won the double.

A year later they won the League title again, and in December of 2011 Shaqiri provided two assists in a match against Manchester United in the Champions League, which Basel won 2–1.

He joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2012 after playing 130 games for Basel with 23 goals and 27 assists.

Shaqiri stayed at Bayern for two and a half years before signing on in January for Roberto Mancini at Inter-Milan,  and he played 81 games with 17 goals and 19 assists for the top Bundesliga club.

After being at Inter for only six months (20 games, 3 goals, 2 assists) Inter Milan now want to unload either him or former Newcastle player Davide Santon, because Inter have too many players and have only room for 25 in their Italian League squad.

That’s according to manager Roberto Mancini.

Shaqiri is therefore available this summer, so we wonder why Newcastle are not in there trying to sign a player who has speed and skill on the wing.

While Shaqiri is not tall at just 5ft 6.5ins in his stocking feet – he is built like a tank.

Newcastle are a bigger club than Stoke – even through we may not have as good a team as Stoke have right now – but maybe Shaqiri would be more willing to join Newcastle United than Stake City?

Shaqiri is described as unpredictable on the ball, good with both feet, clinical in front of goal with excellent vision – and he has good speed both on and off the ball.

We think he would be an excellent signing for Newcastle.

Shaqiri has played 46 times for Switzerland with 17 goals.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

If Charlie Austin is all that, how come no other team has forked out the asking price for him..?

“Stake City” – a vampires nightmare.

  • 3 Kris // Jul 4, 2015 at 3:34 PM

Checking if we have signed some player every day, every hour. But think It’s no time to worry. People must remember we have got a new coach and a new system. The coach wanna tale a look at our team, before he decides what he really thinks we need and wich players he want us to sell. Think we will sign at least one good player before the match against Gateshade next week. Hopefully Matip or Austin.

  • 8 Bambams // Jul 4, 2015 at 3:44 PM

I can only hope Austin has agreed to join us and our club are playing a game with QPR knowing eventually they will have to accept our bid.
Austin could of signed for a number of clubs but hasn’t. ….Clubs that have offered more than we have. It’s only a thought.

Problem is we need a lot more than one player, think Florian will be our first possibly tomorrow.
Monday will see a CB signed then it will be on hold until after USA trip. Austin will fly out to meet the team .

    Unlike.y to be Stoke then
Inter Milan are considering offering Xherdan Shaqiri to Tottenham in exchange for Erik Lamela, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Shaqiri had been linked with a £12million move to Premier League side Stoke City, but Spurs are also believed to be keen on the midfielder.

While Lamela could be set for a return to Serie A after two underwhelming seasons at White Hart Lane.

I’m not particularly interested in what other teams are doing. When you have a squad as ragged as ours, you might need to spend over the odds to get the right players in.

  • 23 Jib // Jul 4, 2015 at 4:33 PM

If Charlie Austin mucks Newcastle about much more , they will go instead for the young Uruguayan striker Diego Rolan currently with Girondins de Bordeaux (like a lot of French clubs they have money problems to do with changes in French tax laws)

This story is all over the French press

Price about €15million – £10,702,422.95 (approx) ha ha ha

Am I too late for the Bag Dust and Austin Allegro articles?

I noticed Carl saying you can learn a lot from history and realise where mistakes were made. A good chuckle that one. Especially when defending the current regimes lack of regard for such history, even their own recent mistakes.

Why Are Newcastle Not After Xherdan Shaqiri?

Because Lee Charnley is a Numb Skull, Graham Carr has no nuts, Steve McClaren is a Puppet II and Mike Ashley is a Cheapskate.

  • 29 leonado_keng // Jul 4, 2015 at 5:10 PM

I think that Mike and Charley are lying the fans as same as they did, they will not even pay money to buy top player certainly, why he resigned board because he wants to reduce huge pressure from fan. However, he still controls about policy to buy player, board committee just is a play only.

    Why haven’t we signed Shaqiri?

Tsk tsk tsk! It’s Saturday and Lord Charles, er Charnley had a hard few weeks deciding wbo not to sign.

It’s difficult and there’s meeting after meeting, time consuming and he’s on the case 24/7.

He’s only paid about £120k a year,a pittance, but does that concern Charnley? Never, he’s bleeds black and white and totally dedicated to tapping away on his calculator, checking his budgets, eager to show Mikey boy that he’s more than capable of not spending money.

He’s strong enough to distance himself from the tedious demands of McClaren who like a child demands more and more attention to the small matter of signing players. Some people can be sooo difficult and demanding. Why does McClaren want new players? He’s got some!

So,have some understanding of Charnley’s situation, work work work, lies lies lies – he’s doing a magnificent job in reshaping Newcastle United, reshaping it for whatever fate might throw at us.

He’s a star and has my total support.

  • 41 Lindisfarne // Jul 4, 2015 at 5:28 PM

So when did the man from QPR say that they would take less than £15M?

I am sure they have actually said Austin is worth up to £25M …..ah, so potential buyers are trying to tempt them to bite at a lower selling price. Sorry my mistake, I was purely focused on the fact that the potential buying clubs are moving the price they are willing to pay ever higher.

IMO the final price will inevitably be higher than £15M and the sooner we make the offer the sooner we will either get him or be able to concentrate elsewhere.

Good to see the photo of the Coaches you posted earlier, shame Cathro was not smiling. But looking through the whole shoot from training on Wednesday, he does show a humorous side. No show for Sissoko, Krul or Colloccini but I presume the first two have been on International duty and well….

‘IT’ do you mean ITK?!! About the leaves?!!

I have forgotten where I picked up on Rolan but an article said that he had been scoring very well in Ligue1.

  • 50 croftus5678 // Jul 4, 2015 at 5:56 PM

    @46 vip

at a complete guess here but i would have thought those who have and those who have not bought season tickets would both want us to sign players and both like to know why we have not !

i cant see why anyone who has would be any different !

i cancelled mine 2 seasons ago for my own reasons at the time but i cant honestly say i was 100% correct to do so as i do think it did effect them esp last season by the drop in support ! every action has a reaction and it has not effected ashley thats for sure.

  • 56 Jail for Ashley // Jul 4, 2015 at 6:08 PM

People saying be patient, trust them blah blah. A few years ago we finished fifth, in the run up to the end of that season Alan Pardew gushed that we’d be buying five quality players in the summer and if we sold we’d buy six. There was no such thing and we nearly got relegated, because of the huge investment that January (12M net spend) it was the excuse not to buy another player for eighteen months. We had a bigger investement last summer and now a mindset that if a shite manager could avoid relegation with the this squad then what could a League cup and Dutch title winner do. So despite lickspittles Carver and Moncur telling us there will be players bought, do you really believe them.

  • 57 croftus5678 // Jul 4, 2015 at 6:12 PM

    @54 tsunki

well…ye there was one or 2 games with the banners ect its more the protests ect that may have effected the players but i was not there so i can only look at what i see mostly on tv tbh or heard from people who went >.<

me cancelling didnt make a difference as someone else no doubt bought it in my place ! it doesnt make a difference to me like i say who's to say i was correct to do so in the first place.

but i dont regret what i have done and i will carry on even though i dont make a difference tbh.

Croftus – I see what you’re saying. I’m the same, I’m not going back until I see the horse and cart bolted together and not a pantomime horse either.

To be honest though, the protests were against Pardew and really the dip in form preceded any protests anyway. There are those that think the protests didn’t help the players, but it wasn’t about them, at least not until it became obvious they were giving in. I go with Jails theory ( I think it was his) that the only reason we won against the hammers was because a late bonus was issued, not because of the magic of the 12th man, he’s been going to all the matches.

I saw that you questioned my contention that there’s something to be gained from learning the lessons of history. This was upon reflection possibly with this regime in hope rather more than expectation. A realisation that mistakes were made in the selection of Managers / Coaches post Allardyce.
You could argue that every manager is a good manager before the season starts and particularly as I am a fan who prefers supporting to moralising. On SM I recognise that he hasn’t managed in the top flight for some time and that there are issues like whether the game in the PL
has passed him by and just how well he will perform but these are the same questions asked of every manager pre season not just new arrivals. Certainly in terms of his record it suggests he will be positive and well organised.
That said he still has something to prove at the PL level of football. At Boro he frequently got to the latter stages of domestic cups; which included winning their first ever cup. Following which he got to a European final and thereafter frequently qualified for a European place. He then moved on and Southgate saw them relegated within a couple of seasons.
As an English manager it’s not overstating it to say that he was the first Englishman to win a cup for a decade and to reach a European final since 1984. Post Managing England he won the Dutch League with Twente.
We’re all capable of delusion, cliquishness and being opinionated tossers on here; it’s a good start. As I said earlier I’m a supporter who prefers supporting to moralising.
Always assuming you’ve read this far I hope you’ll agree given developments over the next few weeks.

  • 87 Tsunki // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:26 PM

Carl @72 I’ve no idea what you were talking g about there to be honest. I only thought that the idea of learning lessons from the past, specifically ally of the deeds if past owners is all very well, but that SOME individuals seem to be a little blinkered as to the mistakes being committed by the current incumbents. As we can quite rightly say, that ‘ history’ of mistakes leads us right up to the present day as they are still making them, current mistake thread is the pathetic concept of ‘communication’ with a disaffected fanbase. How do they learn from that? And then we have the almost inevitable future track of mistakes ( which we discern from their record up to now) which may or may not include keeping substandard players to pad out a cheap squad, and buying few quality needed replacements to be able to make a serious challenge you the top half of the league. Oh and there’s the inevitable fibbing, mustn’t forget that.

  • 88 Tsunki // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:28 PM

As for your observations on McLaren’s ability, you may or may not be right. Personally I am trying to be optimistic. He may have been a typical yawn-inducing appointment by Ashley and his delegates, but he’s a step back up that rickety ladder from Carver, and I’ve no doubt an upgrade from Pardew.

Drink in the sunshine Belfast, drink it in.

  • 93 JDdubai // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:43 PM

Been a while since i did one of these but lets dream..

Come on Charnely, make it so..

  • 94 optimistic prime // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:45 PM

More believable than the transfer rumours

  • 95 carl // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:45 PM

As a fan you can always be optimistic until the first ball is kicked. I am hoping for some long overdue signings in Key positions. McClaren has signed the likes of Mendieta, Hasselbaink, Reiziger, Viduka and he
has a reputation for playing attractive football.
As you say it’s a marked step up from recent incumbents.

I think Dave was taking the piss out of him.

  • 97 Belfast // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:50 PM

Mike Ashley’s school mate “Dave” was taking the piss out of the mags “Dave”

  • 98 carl // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:53 PM

The BQ sounded a lot more fun than the one I went to earlier.

  • 99 Belfast // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:53 PM

He remembers when him and Mikey where 9 years old like it was yesterday. 🙂

  • 100 Jail for Ashley // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:55 PM

Why do The Mag allow articles like that to be published ?

  • 101 Belfast // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:55 PM

Non alcoholic Carl ? No other keys in the fruitbowl ? Hate those Bbqs

  • 102 Belfast // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:56 PM

I’m sending it in to take a break magazine that 50 quid is mine !

  • 103 carl // Jul 4, 2015 at 7:58 PM

Not into Pimms and all the paraphernalia. Escaped for a chilled pint.

  • 104 carl // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:00 PM

Keys in the fruitbowl- bit dated – ????

  • 105 Jail for Ashley // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:02 PM

You are a real asset to the blog if not a little bit of a rascal, your fondness for the blog of old is what keeps this place going, we could do with more of your type. Unlike some of the chaff that bring this place down. I wish they’d remember this is a football blog, shame they didn’t show Jeremy Kyle all day long, then the old romantics could have a good sensible footballing chat. Btw, I saw Ian Toon the other day in Chiswick drinking latte with a really hot chick, said he didn’t post much now because of all the philistines on of late. Got to go now to a really important meeting.

  • 106 JamesToon // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:02 PM

Would love us to sign those players, however I hope and expect Taylor to be ahead of Dummett in the pecking order (I think SM will get the best out of him) and Pérez should be ahead of Aarons

  • 107 WWSBRD // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:03 PM

Because it’s a crappy website that’ll publish any piece of crap?

  • 108 Belfast // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:03 PM

Where else are you going to put them though ? The fruitbowl is a safe place.

  • 109 Belfast // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:08 PM

Do you think Mike Ashley’s mate Dave struggled to keep a straight face throughout these three stories ?

  • 110 Jail for Ashley // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:13 PM

“Dave” was as real as pushy pardew !

  • 111 carl // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:13 PM

Hot chick is also a bit dated. Lay off the booze and the smack mate. It won’t do much for your looks.

  • 112 Jail for Ashley // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:17 PM

Was I talking to you ?

  • 113 carl // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:17 PM

The Mag has been in decline for years. Trivia personified. They pander and don’t inform.

  • 114 carl // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:20 PM

    Shaddup you face……..

  • 115 Belfast // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:23 PM

Hahaha You can still get a good laugh on here like.

  • 116 welshgeordie9 // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:23 PM

Still haven’t signed a player, what a load of rubbish, bring back pardew.

  • 117 Jib // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:24 PM

  • 119 carl // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:26 PM

    I’d forgotten about The Copa.

  • 120 Tsunki // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:27 PM

Hot chicks are dated? You’ve been looking at these adverts on Eds site mate.

  • 121 Tsunki // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:28 PM

    Btw thanks Jail. I think.

  • 122 Jail for Ashley // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:29 PM

    Ciao !

  • 123 optimistic prime // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:29 PM

Funny enough when reading it I instantly thought of Ian for some reason, then thought nah.

  • 124 Tsunki // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:30 PM

Tbf if there was actually any Toon footy going on or even a signing or two there’s be more than just trivia and daft jokes to keep the blog going. By daft jokes and trivia of course I mean articles ha ha sorry Ed couldn’t resist 🙂

  • 125 Jail for Ashley // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:34 PM

Yes welsh lets, I remember all those barren windows with fondness.

  • 126 Belfast // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:38 PM

I don’t think he was being serious Skunki. He was impersonating somebody else. Sorry to piss on your chips. 🙂

  • 127 Graeme // Jul 4, 2015 at 8:50 PM
