Why Are Newcastle Not After Inter-Milan Star?

Stoke City reached an agreement with Inter Milan about three days ago for the transfer of 23 year-old Swiss International Xherdan Shaqiri, but Stoke are said to be dubious as to whether they can persuade Shaqiri to join them.

Shaqiri was born in Gjilan, in the old Yugoslavia but emigrated to Switzerland with his parents back in 1992,  and joined FC Basel in 2001 and is a product of their Youth Academy.

Xherdan Shaqiri – after scoring while at Bayern Munich

He made his debut for Basel back in July 2009 when he was 17 – in Basel’s opening game against FC St. Gallen – and he came to prominence in 2009-2010 season when Basel won the double.

A year later they won the League title again, and in December of 2011 Shaqiri provided two assists in a match against Manchester United in the Champions League, which Basel won 2–1.

He joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2012 after playing 130 games for Basel with 23 goals and 27 assists.

Shaqiri stayed at Bayern for two and a half years before signing on in January for Roberto Mancini at Inter-Milan,  and he played 81 games with 17 goals and 19 assists for the top Bundesliga club.

After being at Inter for only six months (20 games, 3 goals, 2 assists) Inter Milan now want to unload either him or former Newcastle player Davide Santon, because Inter have too many players and have only room for 25 in their Italian League squad.

That’s according to manager Roberto Mancini.

Shaqiri is therefore available this summer, so we wonder why Newcastle are not in there trying to sign a player who has speed and skill on the wing.

While Shaqiri is not tall at just 5ft 6.5ins in his stocking feet – he is built like a tank.

Newcastle are a bigger club than Stoke – even through we may not have as good a team as Stoke have right now – but maybe Shaqiri would be more willing to join Newcastle United than Stake City?

Shaqiri is described as unpredictable on the ball, good with both feet, clinical in front of goal with excellent vision – and he has good speed both on and off the ball.

We think he would be an excellent signing for Newcastle.

Shaqiri has played 46 times for Switzerland with 17 goals.

What do you think?
