Newcastle May Be Losing The Race For Top Striker

This could be a big week in the transfer market for Newcastle – we hope this will be a big week in the transfer market for Newcastle.

One of our targets is 20 year-old Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who we have been tracking all season.

But Roma moved in and submitted an offer over the for the Serbian International, and in his comments over the weekend, the striker doesn’t even mention Newcastle as an interested club.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

Aleksandar Mitrovic – Roma bid is low – are Newcastle still interested?

This is what the 20 year-old said over the weekend in La Gazzetta dello Sport:

“I have received an offer from Roma, but I still do not know if I will accept,” “I have to decide, together with my agent, the best solution for my career.¨

“Roma is a strong team, a very good team, and I know Rudi Garcia well, he is a great coach.”

“Soon you will know my destination. Aside from Roma, there is also strong interest of Benfica and Porto. It will be important for me to feel good in the country and when I choose my new team.”

” In Belgium it was fine but it’s time to go elsewhere and have new experiences.”

“I need to have assurances of playing. For sure, in Italy the sun always shines. In Belgium it was fine, but it’s time to go elsewhere, to have other experiences.”

“There is also Tottenham – first of all it will be important for me to feel good in the country – in Italy for sure the sun always shines.”

We suppose we could tell him the sun always shines in Newcastle, and see if that will do the trick – if he’s worried about the weather.

It’s not good that Aleksandar doesn’t even mention Newcastle there as one of  the clubs who are interested in him.

The first thing that happens in any transfer is the clubs have to agree a fee,  and reports from Belgium today suggest the offer from Roma is €18M  (around £12.8M) and that’s short of what Anderlecht want for their star striker – £15M.

Reports in Belgium also say Newcastle are the only club who are willing to pay £15M, but there was a report on May 15th that said a deal has already been agreed with Newcastle.

Dragan Duric was the former Partizan President, and at that time he said it was a done deal as long as Newcastle were not relegated, and the fee was said to be £15M.

So it’s difficult to know if Newcastle are even close to getting a deal completed for Mitrovic – we may have even pulled out of the race for the young Serbian.

What do you think?

There’s a danger of people only seeing what they want to see in news reports, and then blaming the report when they are disappointed.

The Wijnaldum report in the Mirror says he’s close to a deal with a Premier League Club. It says he’s he is at “early stages” of talks with Newcastle.
Can you see how these do not necessarily add up to “He’s close to a deal with Newcastle?”

    for me in….
    Wijnaldum 15
    Mitrovic/Austin 15
    Rolan 13
    CB 10
and squad will be improved much…
if Sissoko leaves, then bring also
    Fer 8-10….
this team full of potential and quality….
    janmaat, CB….Collo…Haidara

options like Tiote,Colback,S.Taylor,Dumett,SDJ,Aarons,Cisse,Riviere….but this team has a lot of intelligence and movement there…I think this should be great team, if more attacking, change Anita with SDJ…

If we had bought every player that we ‘may be losing or have missed out on’ we would now have about 10 new strikers, 14 new midfielders and perhaps 6 new central defenders !

Could it be that because Mitrovic hasn’t mentioned us is because we are not interested in him ?

Normal practice is that should a player want to up his sale price he (and his agent) very often mention as many clubs as realistically as possible in order to generate a bidding war.
