Newcastle are giving a one week trial to 17 year-old Dutchman Dani Koks on trial, so he will have a chanced to impress the new head coach Stave McClaren, who will be off with the first team to America this weekend.
We remember seven years ago when 21 year-old Sebastien Bassong came in for a week-long trial from Metz when Kevin Keegan was at the club, and he was signed on and not only that but he was easily Newcastle’s best player in that relegation season.
Sebastien was our Player of the Season with a massive 67.9% of the vote.
Dani Koks – on trial this week at Newcastle
Newcastle got him in for nothing and sold him in August of 2009, about one year later for £8M to Tottenham, but he hasn’t done all that well since he left Newcastle.
Hes now at Norwich and spent some time on loan at Watford last season where he made 11 appearances for them.
Dani is a bit younger than Sebastien was, but at least he does have a similar chance to Sebastien to impress this week and earn a contract at Newcastle – and who knows he could follow in Bassong’s footsteps.
The 17-year-old midfielder is unhappy that he was not in the Ajax team for the Future Cup, which Ajax organize each year for U17 teams, and is held at the Amsterdam ArenA over the Easter weekend.
Dani has left Ajax and joined Willem II, but he will try hard to get a contract at Newcastle.
We don’t know too much about this lad – but we hope he can take his big chance this week.
Comments welcome.

Comment #5There are at least a dozen players who should be in the target sights. Very quick, harsh assessments. but then make decisions. McLaren it’s up to you. If you fanny about Charnley will think we don’t need better players. Harrumph.

Comment #8G2 you sound like one of those awful men at the FA who tweeted that thing about the lionesses going back to being mothers, daughters, etc. Awful awful things to say, none of those things are true. I’m just waiting for the men’s team going back to being dad’s and sons whoa then it’ll all hit the fan!

My list (incorperating LewSpi’s list) would be;
Obertan
Vukic
Goofy
Riviere
Taylor
Willo
Colo
Fergie
That allows for 6 new faces. We will probably have to sign 2 or 3 brits for the HG quota, but it would be a decent overhaul if 4 out of the 6 were decent quality and the others decent potential. This is probably dreaming.

Comment #17I think someone touched on the main problem (imo), our young players aren’t young anymore.
And they haven’t been coached or played enough to be good enough. And now they have to be counted. That’s the issue.
That’s why we have a threadbare squad which is bursting at the seams.

should be heading out the door before the likes of fergie/vukic/abied/bigi as they can do just as good a job but for the fraction of the wages and at a younger age.
where as those at the top are supposed to be our main players and was bought for that purpose but are clearly not up to the task.

Comment #28Is it Sammy who’s going out on loan.
I thought it said in the BBC sports gossip that it was Timmi Ameobi, I don’t know if there is another brother or if that is Sammy’s actual name. It left me confused although that’s easy to do nowadays.

Comment #31The problem with the way we treat our young players is cash!
Ashley won’t pay for expirience or seasoned pros to sit on the bench, so we can’t afford to send our kids out on loan because they are used as squad filler.

thats a pretty good way of looking at it as arma/rolando have surely been in that catagory and it may have effected out other not so young players ! to late to tell now though.
would you class young players as 16-20yo’s ( as in not needing a squad number ) ?
and squad fillers as 21+ ?

Comment #37You beat me to it Jib. I watched him against Whitecaps in a Candian Championship cup match (there are only 4 teams in it: Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal so it’s a bit of a larf). He’s not bad. Tall, like his brothers and some football sense. Can’t even make the MLS though.
