Is This Newcastle’s Replacement For Cheick Tiote?

9:11 am, Wednesday, July 8th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 16 Comments

There have been reports that Newcastle are interested in Stoke City midfielder Steven N’Zonzi, who is set to leave the  midlands club this summer, and the French U21 International could be a good deal for Newcastle, given that he has just one year left on his contract.

But of course there have been reports about Newcastle being  interested in almost every player available this summer.

Steven N’Zonzi – available from Stoke

N’Zonzi has played six seasons in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City (three seasons at each club), and yet the French U21 International is still only 26.

Spanish club Sevilla were the favorites to sign Sevilla and are reported to have offered Stoke £3M for  the player, but that offer was quickly turned down by the Potters,

Stokes Chief Executive Tony Scholes said this about the potential deal:

“I can confirm that we received a bid from Sevilla for Steven but it gets nowhere near our valuation of the player.”

“In any case we would obviously like Steven to stay at Stoke City. “We have no desire to sell one of our best players.”

One barrier to signing N’Zonzi, who was Stoke’s Player of the Season, is that they don’t want him to move to another PL club.

If Newcastle sign Georginio Wijnaldum, we probably need to bring in center-backs and strikers as the main thrust in the transfer window.

But if Newcastle are going to sell Cheick Tiote in the summer, N’Zonzi could be a decent replacement for him for around £5M.

Steven has played 96 times for Blackburn with 5 goals and 5 assists from 2009 to 2012, and he has made 120 appearances for Stoke with 7 goals and 4 assists.

In total he has made 196 Premier League appearances, and at 6ft 3ins he would also give some height to the Newcastle team.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

I hope the club isn’t even wasting thought time on this.

Was it even worth posting this article? It’s just more unfounded speculation; no more. Number 67 or whatever we’re up to in ‘linked’ players.

    Bloody YAWN.

We don’t need midfielders, we need strikers and defenders. Lots of them. At least six players. Quality ones. Now. The club’s chances of doing what is needed in time are now around zilch, and Charnley should take the bullet for that – but won’t because he’s following the game plan precisely.

Right now it’s looking very much like we’ve been right, that Ashley’s little speech was a desperate (failed) attempt to fool people into renewing tickets and stop them boycotting. Recruitment will be one or two ‘exciting’ signings and a handful of ‘investments for the future’ – all adding up to another stab at mid-table safety, but no more.

If, come January, we’re any higher than 8th, one of our key players will be sold to avoid the problem and expense of Europa League football.

So my call is: screw it. When’s the cricket on?

Tiote would be one of the first high earners out the door if it stood to me…granted he would be replaced of course!

    I would move on:

    I am still undecided on:

I suppose the last 4 should have the opportunity to impress McClaren!

The metro is saying we have tabled a bid of 15 mil for Townsend. Find this very hard to believe like.

I’be horrified if that was true re – townsend . if ever a player looked flashy but in reality produced next to nothing it’s him. A slightly better version of a headless chicken than obertan.

If we have 15M where is Abdennour and Dragovic!!!

We will never spend 15M on Townsend, compare him with Wijnaldum for 15M and choose…

Ashley’s idea of ‘ambition’ isn’t the same as the supporters’.

Mike will only sell us when he bring success to us.

For younger fans you will have at least another couple ten over years to wait as for the older fans i’m afraid the chances are you might not live to see that. – kinda hash but its the fact.

Another post from Ashley OUT supporter.

He should put the club up to sell and see which investor is interested now that we are capable of financial returns..

…but if the club are capable of financial returns why would he want to sell..mmmm..
