There have been reports that Newcastle are interested in Stoke City midfielder Steven N’Zonzi, who is set to leave the midlands club this summer, and the French U21 International could be a good deal for Newcastle, given that he has just one year left on his contract.
But of course there have been reports about Newcastle being interested in almost every player available this summer.
Steven N’Zonzi – available from Stoke
N’Zonzi has played six seasons in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City (three seasons at each club), and yet the French U21 International is still only 26.
Spanish club Sevilla were the favorites to sign Sevilla and are reported to have offered Stoke £3M for the player, but that offer was quickly turned down by the Potters,
Stokes Chief Executive Tony Scholes said this about the potential deal:
“I can confirm that we received a bid from Sevilla for Steven but it gets nowhere near our valuation of the player.”
“In any case we would obviously like Steven to stay at Stoke City. “We have no desire to sell one of our best players.”
One barrier to signing N’Zonzi, who was Stoke’s Player of the Season, is that they don’t want him to move to another PL club.
If Newcastle sign Georginio Wijnaldum, we probably need to bring in center-backs and strikers as the main thrust in the transfer window.
But if Newcastle are going to sell Cheick Tiote in the summer, N’Zonzi could be a decent replacement for him for around £5M.
Steven has played 96 times for Blackburn with 5 goals and 5 assists from 2009 to 2012, and he has made 120 appearances for Stoke with 7 goals and 4 assists.
In total he has made 196 Premier League appearances, and at 6ft 3ins he would also give some height to the Newcastle team.
