Steve McClaren On Injuries, Style Of Play And Transfer Status

The minutes of the Fans Forum meeting have been published and it’s basically Steve McClaren talking about most things, and putting his own views on some of the answers to questions – some of the answers have come from the club – we assume that’s Lee Charnley and they read in a very formal way – as usual.

But McClaren gives his views on almost everything that came up during the meeting.

Steve McClaren – answered many questions on Monday night

Here’s some of the interesting pieces.

On how Newcastle will play:

McClaren response: “We’ve put the statement up that we want to be respected in football as an attractive, attacking, but effective team. That’s what we’ve always done. It’s trying to get a balance; a product out on the field and a product from individual players.¨

“Everyone is different. I’ve talked to Peter Beardsley and he tells me the crowd like to see the team getting the ball forward, not passing backwards. We might have to adjust a little bit.¨

¨I’m talking behind the scenes, talking to staff, talking to you (the Fans Forum), reading things and finding out what kind of football you like to see.”

On the transfers this summer.

General response of club – ¨The club is working hard to ensure the players who come in are the right players whether it takes a week, two weeks or more, but understands there will be skepticism until that happens.¨

McClaren response : “As a coach coming in, I want to know what we’re doing and who we’re going for. It doesn’t always work. You need the right people and it has to be at the right time.¨

“I’m very chilled about it because I know what’s going on behind the scenes. Eventually, we’ll get there. I wouldn’t have come here if that hadn’t been the case. I know what we can do and what we intend to do. ¨

¨We’re in control of things and they’ll happen in their own time. There are clubs around the world chasing the type of players we’re interested in and that’s the challenge for us.”

On all the injuries we get every single season.

McClaren response:”It’s one of the first things we look at,  and we talk to the doctor and the medical staff. We’ve got very good staff behind the scenes.¨

¨We’ve gone though training methods, what we do and seeing how we can avoid injuries. The doctor was one of the first people I spoke to.¨

“We want players to be available every Saturday so that’s our target. If a player gets injured, we need accurate diagnosis, good treatment, good rehab and to get him back as soon as possible.”

We are particularly interested in what Steve plans to do with the injuries,  because if we can only keep our players fit – especially some of our star players like Siem de Jong and Rolando Aarons as just two examples, the team we put out will be a lot stronger than it was last season.

It’s going to be very important that Steve now attends every single Fans Forum meeting – as he adds some very good input and puts a human face on the club.

Before the answers we got from the questions were far too formal, succinct and even abrupt at times.

Steve seems to have made a huge difference on Monday night.

Ed I think calling Aaron’s a star is a bit far.
At the moment he has potential. Nothing more ffs

I recall an interview with SBR once where he described his first weeks in charge were spent asking all the ” long term “injured to give him return dates s some had been simply collecting wages for 15 months without any real intention of returning to the first team any time soon .
Seems since he left we have returned to the same culture .

The Forum could certainly be doing more to help the club to reinforce positive messages about itself!
In fairness to the person who put it, a rare serious question did get a telltale answer.
Asked why only preferred media partners were invited to staged interviews at McClaren’s unveiling, they said it was because the arrangement with preferred partners enhanced the positive messages the club wanted to be accepted.
Like “Austin a done deal and Berinho to follow” I suppose.
    From the horses mouth.
Sky and the Mirror are stooges.

I must think that with the current silence around Wijnaldum that transfer is now dead. Further one might think the same about the Serbian dude.

had to have a bit of a laugh to myself about the injuries situation. Wally said ;-
““We want players to be available every Saturday so that’s our target. If a player gets injured, we need accurate diagnosis, good treatment, good rehab and to get him back as soon as possible.”

I immediately reflect back to the months preceeding January.
King Percy was witnessed at Benton kicking away the crutches being used by young Aarons.
KP. “Look lad in my time there was non off this poncing about, you can run the injury off – you’re starting on Saturday”.

And we all know what happened after that – King Percy yeh top coach alright.

I did like the bit where Schteeve said he’d been asking players why fans thought they were shit and not commited .

I’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall for some of those meetings.
