It’s good to see Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles get a game and it’s a big chance for them to shine in pre-season and two of our injured stars last season – Rolando Aarons and Siem de Jong also start.
And we see Matty Pattison is in the Gateshead line-up – the South African was on Newcastle’s books from 2005-2008 and played around 10 times for us and when Glenn Roeder was manager he was our top young player.
New coach Ian Cathro has been drilling the defense over the last week, so it will be interesting to see how they play with Mike Williamson paired with Lascelles in the center.
Daryl Janmaat starts at right back and Massadio Haidara is finally back from injury on the left side.
Vurnon Anita – a good friend of Georginio Wijnaldum, who may even be announced as a Newcastle player later tonight, played very well in the last few games of last season and also starts.
The news leaking out is that Georginio has passed his medical this afternoon.
