Darlow, Lascelles, Janmaat, Aaron And Cisse Start At Gateshead

7:34 pm, Friday, July 10th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 169 Comments

Gateshead FC.svgnufc emblem

Newcastle’s first pre-season game kicks of at the International Stadium at 8:00pm local time tonight and Steve McClaren is starting a very strong side.

Gateshead (4-5-1): Sam Russell; Simon Ramsden, James Curtis, Ben Clark, Matty Pattison; Josh Gillies, Rob Ramshaw, Jamie Chandler, Jimmy Phillips, James Marwood; Jon Shaw
Substitutes: To be confirmed

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Karl Darlow; Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Jamaal Lascelles, Massadio Haidara; Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback (c); Moussa Sissoko, Siem de Jong, Yoan Gouffran; Papiss Cisse

Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Shane Ferguson, Lubo Satka, Curtis Good, Gael Bigirimana, Cheick Tiote, Haris Vuckic, Rolando Aarons, Gabriel Obertan, Adam Armstrong, Ayoze Perez, Emmanuel Riviere

Referee: Geoff Eltringham (Sunderland)

It’s good to see Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles get a game and it’s a big chance for them to shine in pre-season and two of our injured stars last season – Rolando Aarons and Siem de Jong also start.

And we see Matty Pattison is in the Gateshead line-up –  the South African was on Newcastle’s books from 2005-2008 and played around 10 times for us and when Glenn Roeder was manager he was our top young player.

New coach Ian Cathro has been drilling the defense over the last week, so it will be interesting to see how they play with Mike Williamson paired with Lascelles in the center.

Daryl Janmaat starts at right back and Massadio Haidara is finally back from injury on the left side.

Vurnon Anita –  a good friend of Georginio Wijnaldum, who may even be announced as a Newcastle player later tonight, played very well in the last few games of last season and also starts.

The news leaking out is that Georginio has passed his medical this afternoon.

Comments welcome.

There it is. The 4-2-3-1 formation. A very good formation if you have enough pace on the wings.

People saying I’m not serious….I’ll give them serious…..I mean look at the material I’ve got to work with. Bloody cabbages on defense…..hard to see a way through here. Good thing it’s Gateshead and not Arsenal.

Don’t know why we’re arguing over a player that hasn’t signed yet,

Knowing mr krabs and pennyfeather they’ll be haggling over a goal relegation release clause and then boom!

  • 15 Ashton // Jul 10, 2015 at 7:45 PM

Its obvious that in addition to Mitrovic and Ginni we need:

    – two top class center backs (Abdenour, Matip, De Vrej, Van Dijk)

    -Left Winger (Patrick Hermman, Insigne)

-Left Back (Riccardo Rodreguez, Jetro Willems)

    And we are done.

I agree about jc being captain

As for me they have to be on the pitch every game

Lead by example in performance and not get booked and get stupid suspensions

I would pick janmaat but jc would be second choice but will he play every game as that’s the strongest area of the team and not get booked every 2 or 3 games.

  • 22 Ashton // Jul 10, 2015 at 7:50 PM

We need a LB that can cross balls to capitalize on Mitrovic’s great heading abilities. One of those two would provide more assists than most PL wingers.

For me its aftwr they have been attacking. Modern fullbacks like getting forward, and in most cases they have two cbs and a DM to cover if they cant get back. The incompetence of our CBs, and iur lack of a true DM always makes our fullbacks look like they are frequently out of position, and don’t give them that vital few extra seconds to track back.

Not saying that our fbs are great, but i think they are better than they have appeared….if that makes sense

  • 115 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:01 PM

Tequila…I didn’t mean to say it was a silent g as I corrected, but that the construction of wijnaldum or in it’s phonology Vei nal-dum seeing as ij or ei can be regarded as 25th letter has a g-sound to it. A j and a g can sound alike sometimes in Germanic language (German, Dutch, Danish and African).

The tendency for native English speakers is to pronounce ij as [a?] (like the English vowel y) which can lead to confusion among native listeners.

I didn’t mean to say there was a g in Wijnaldum.

Skunki…Winegum has a nice English ring to it

  • 122 switch365 // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:14 PM

Song that immediately came to mind when I first heard we were after the guy a few years back was Mark Knopfler’s Why aye man – (Wy-nal-dum)

  • 123 Mister Tuff // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:14 PM

    People call the bloke Gini.
Please no daft names for the bloke – nearly as bad as having to put up with the Wums and multiples.
Socks has to be the worst nickname ever!

  • 124 Thump // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:17 PM

@armchair fan: What do you think Penfold has been feeding the Chron all these years? 😉

  • 125 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:18 PM

It’s a miserable thing when people get upset over nicknames. Especially comparing them to some of the vile things the wums come out with.

  • 126 beermonkey // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:21 PM

well we seem to be doing ok
riviere has started how he ended last season and gone wide

  • 127 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:21 PM

You vill all blog in a serious und solemn manner. Zer vill be NO humour!

  • 128 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:28 PM

What is a wum, a dutch mother?

  • 129 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:29 PM

    “Mitrovic wooooaaahh
    He came from Anderlecht!
    To work for Sports Direct!”

    It’s begun.

  • 130 Belfast // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:31 PM

To be fair Markass socks was the worst name ever.
Worse than “Pards” and that was woeful.

Two stains on this hmmmmmm fine blog.

  • 131 tequilamag // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:33 PM

Well said Mister Tuff, posters making up daft names. Rotters the lot of them. You would never stoop so low

  • 132 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:34 PM

    Second half team

New team in 2nd half for #nufc. Woodman, Bigirimana, Satka, Good, Ferguson, Tiote, Obertan, Aarons, Perez, Armstrong, Riviere.

  • 133 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:35 PM

Personally always thought socks was perfect for sissoko. If people dont like it then fair enough. I just think it’s a bit extreme comparing it to the multiples with their vile abuse and the wums (wind up merchants for anyone who doesn’t know).

  • 134 Offkey // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:36 PM

Dreamboat was the worst nickname……how could people use that.

  • 135 beermonkey // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:38 PM

    is it still 0 1

  • 136 martoon // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:39 PM

Evening Markaccus – I’ve read some ridiculous things on this blog but Tuff at 123 tops them all. How can giving a player a nickname be compared to a WUM – personally I like the names socks and hairdryer 🙂

  • 137 croftus5678 // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:39 PM

    @beer

    yes mate

  • 138 JamesToon // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:39 PM

Hope we try for shaqiri now that he’s rejected Stoke (mind you we probably don’t have much chance)

Hearing good things from the Gateshead game, friendly I know but nice passing and good tempo

  • 139 croftus5678 // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:41 PM

arma missed an easy chance also it seems !

and river set up aarons but the keeper saved it.

  • 140 beermonkey // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:42 PM

    croftus

    cheers

  • 141 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:43 PM

    Martoon

    Evening

Yeah, and i am sure if the tables were turned, he would be the first to raise a fuss!

  • 142 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:46 PM

They reckon the finishing is awful, particularly from rivière. It is however the first pre season game, so shouldn’t be looked too much into.

Certainly doesn’t merit the “that’s why we’re getting relegated” chants. Don’t need none of that in the first game.

  • 143 croftus5678 // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:46 PM

    @138 james

we have has 22 men on the field in the 2 halves and created a hell of a lot inc some very easy chance (2 to note from memory where it was almost easier to score than to miss)

not heard much about defence so i suspect its been ok and hairdryer/siem have been the standout players it seems.

i know its very very early but we need to be putting those easy chances away esp when we play in the prem as we cant waste chances like that.

tbf our u21’s should be putting on a show against gateshead though.

  • 144 Sazzer // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:46 PM

ALL WE DO IS WIN WIN WIN…

  • 145 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:49 PM

    Lew

Riviere couldn’t score in a brothel it was free! I cant think we have ever had a worse forward. Xisco, Luque and Andreas Anderson we all better than him. So was that guivarch bloke. Even Daniel Cordone (remember him?) Had more about him!

  • 146 croftus5678 // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:50 PM

    its over 1-0 win

  • 147 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:51 PM

Shola was twice the player Riviere is 😀

  • 148 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:53 PM

Ah well. A win is a win. Positive start.

  • 149 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:53 PM

    YCMIU

He hasn’t had the best start has he? Haha

I don’t remember cordone, sounds more like a sopranos character than a footballer. However, a quick wiki search confirms I was only about 10 when he was here, so I guess I can be excused.

  • 150 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:54 PM

    Was it a good game?

  • 151 Jail for Ashley // Jul 10, 2015 at 9:54 PM

Nothing against gay people, disclaimer. But socks is so fcukin gay it’s unbelievable !

  • 152 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:00 PM

    Lew

Your age at the time is not relevant. You don’t remember him because he did FCUK ALL while he was here 😀

  • 153 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:01 PM

Socks are gay now?? What on earth will i wear between my feet and shoes now?!

  • 154 LewSpi v2.0 // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:02 PM

Haha fair one! How did we get rid of him? Tried and tested, surely we can do the same for the rest of these donkeys.

  • 155 lukes26 // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:02 PM

    Jail

I agree. Well said sir. Socks is amazing, just like some amazing glorious man on man butt sex.

  • 156 Toon-Prodigy // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:05 PM

1-0 that’s it? Not sure what the game was like but I expected alot better, friendly or not.

  • 157 Thump // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:06 PM

We’ve beat Gateshead? Smashing, we’re right on route to winning the league, then.

  • 158 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:07 PM

We drove him up to the woods for a “trip out”, tied him to a tree, and left him. Some say his spirit still walks abroad, kicking ghostly footballs in the opposite direction to what it intends.

  • 159 GeordieTwo // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:07 PM

Well? Are wor defensive liabilities gone yet? Wor cabbages? Come on Schteve, do something. It’s all well and good to beat Gateshead 1-0 but supposedly we’re going to play in the Prem. Get us some defenders….Harrumph.

  • 160 armchair fan // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:07 PM

Socks comes natural to me when thinking of sissoko

    Sissoko works his socks off

  • 161 GeordieTwo // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:08 PM

I gave Schteve a good 2 hours to get rid of wor cabbages and are they gone? They are not!!! Unbelievable.

  • 162 GeordieTwo // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:09 PM

Sissy is a better knick name for Sissoko. Socks makes him sound too…..well….English, if you know what I mean? Wearing socks with sandals and all that. Not very manly. Harrumph.

  • 163 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:10 PM

Homosexuality references for use of the nickname “socks”? Really?

  • 164 martoon // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:12 PM

YouCouldn’tMakeItUp – I actually quite like Riviere, agreed his finishing is woeful but the rest of his game is pretty good. He wins headers, runs into the channels well and creates chances for other player – I’m hopeful McClaren can sort him out!

  • 165 Jail for Ashley // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:13 PM

    Markaccus,
Disclaimer, straight away before the politic police start up !

  • 166 GeordieTwo // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:14 PM

A lot of you have asked me “G2, can we get by for another whole season with just vegetables in the central defense?” Harrumph. Very good question you lot. Well…..it depends really. Do we want to finish above 18th place? I mean really lads and lasses…..Harvest the vegetables!!! Sell the vegetables!!!!

  • 167 Jail for Ashley // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:16 PM

    G2,
    Disclaimer.
It’s those cellar loving Austrians that like sandals and socks, wery veird bunch of hypocrites.

  • 168 GeordieTwo // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:18 PM

Let’s have something manly for Sissoko then if you lot don’t like Sissy. What about Human Stud Bull??? Or if that’s too long what about Mr. Biffo? Let me know you lot. I support YCMIU aka Markaccus on this one. No gay bashing. Serious Blog Protocol Breech!!!

  • 169 lesh // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:27 PM

At a time of night when folk are out enjoying themselves, refreshed by a couple of drinks and the prospect of a season made of big changes to the Club and its direction, the blog seems to be enjoying nothing!

Apart from a few posters who are wedded to Newcastle United, there appear to be those who are keen to be involved in in chatter.

It’s off-putting to say the least.
