McClaren – Recruitment Going Very Well At The Moment

10:25 am, Friday, July 10th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 122 Comments

It looks like Steve McClaren could field a strong side tonight, with a mix of experienced players and fringe players as they take on Gateshead at the International Stadium in their first pre-season friendly.

The Chronicle is reporting Newcastle could start with Moussa Sissoko, Daryl Janmaat, Papiss Cisse and Cheick Tiote and new boys Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles could also be in the starting line-up.

Steve McClaren – recruitment going well

Paul Dummett and Mehdi Abeid are still surprisingly carrying injuries from last season, and will not participate.

It’s interesting in his comments today that Steve has said recruitment is going well:

“That’s the job, improving, coaching the players, getting them organised, getting them fit with the help of good staff, and also working behind the scenes and helping in terms of recruitment, which at the moment is going very well.

“People may say slowly, but we have got to get the right ones in, that’s the key.”

There’s news today that Georginio Wijnaldum is on his way to Newcastle for his medical, after everything else seems to have been agreed..

And also good news from Belgium today that significant progress has been made between Anderlecht and Newcastle for Aleksandar Mitrovic, and the 20 year-old has been offered a five year deal.

Newcastle are said to be close to completing that deal.

Getting those two players through the door would be great and we could even complete both those deals before tomorrow night.

If we can do that they will be on the plane on Sunday to America,

Comments welcome.

This is all exciting but unfortunately I think these 2 lads will be the only signings we will make.

Unless 1 of our CBs gets sold I think Matip will soon be signed up.

  • 2 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:30 AM

Player disillusion could also be down to the owners philosophy, so hopefully this APPARENT change of direction by jabba might help with that. Still not holding my breath until this half decent (although delayed) start is built upon.

Simpson said on NUFCTV that there will be 2 teams put out tonight, 45 minutes each. If anyone has the slightest niggle they won’t be even in contention, keeping them right for ‘murica

I think we will have to sell-to-sign now. Not just because of money, but senior squad places too. As long is the ins are better than the outs, i’d be happy

  • 5 Slank // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:32 AM

    Blackley and Brownlie

I disagree with you. I don’t think the squad needs a massive overhaul.

What it needs is professional and inventive coaching of the highest standard together with discipline and motivation.

I wouldn’t write to much in Cabaye going to Palace.

Owen signed for us, it couldn’t be more obvious he didn’t want to be here.

    Beggars can’t be choosers!

Desperation for a first team place IMO

I too think it could be Matip.

I do think we need adequate cover for Janmaat. Anita is not the temporary answer.

Well if rumours to be true then I am very happy with our first 2 signings. As McLaren stated they were very close to 1-2 incomings and it looks like that is to happen.
McLaren also said he was looking at bringing in at least 5 major signings not including youth recruitment ,I have reason to believe this will happen.
McLaren may be toeing the party line but what he says I genuinely believe he means what he says with passion. Pardew on the other hand I always felt there was a hidden agenda behind all the crap he spouted.
Hopefully guys this is a start of a transfer frenzy and a new start for Nufc

  • 12 JDdubai // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:39 AM

McClaren and the coaches – good improvement

Wijnaldum and Mitrovic (If they happen) – fantastic, thought Mitrovic would be out of our leageu so leats see – think he really wants Roma but maybe stick with us for a couple of years.

Now need a top CB at this same level and ideally one wide player and we start to look half decent with a fit squad.

I said months ago to wait and see how the summer goes, hopefully it will all work out.

Then all we have is the start to the season from hell!

Aye mate, I expected Trippier to be cover for Janmaat but I wouldn’t mind Sam Bryam as cover for Janmaat now.

LB as well we may need a 1st team starter or cover to Haidara because I think Dummet could be a good cover CB.

For me atm I think covers for RB & LB are needed, maybe not first team starters but quick young lads would be beneficial.

Subject to fitness, I think we will see players who have not played for us before (Darlow and Lascelles).

Also players who haven’t played much (if at all) for the first team (Marveaux, De Jong, Aarons, Vuckic, Ferguson, Abeid) interspersed with some of the regulars.

I would imagine that coaches would want to see, through actual matches, whether some of the fringe players have a future at the club.

That’s common sense but it’s gonna happen is what I mean. McClaren could be the best thing that’s happened to us in years! I’m feeling very optimistic and things like players leaving doesn’t worry me as there aren’t many I would be desperate to keep.

Obertan looked fantastic last season pre-season until injury got him.

Marv I think needs to be shipped out, the guy could be good but for me to lazy in tracking back and helping out the team plus SM discipline tactics might not fold well with Marv

tbf i think our club is willing to accept next to nothing as a fee for williamson !

he’s the type of player who would willingly take a step down and a reduction in wages to go with that also so i cant see there being too many problems getting rid tbh.

we have jamaal/colo/saylor/good after williamson that we need to decide on imo.

jamaal is obv a keep and i’m thinking if i was to bet they wouldnt get rid of colo or saylor just yet ! so if anything its willo and good out the door imo.

PSV Eindhoven have confirmed that Georginio Wijnaldum is on his way to England to agree personal terms with Newcastle.

The 24-year-old is due to fly into Newcastle on Friday for a medical and Press Association Sport understands the Barclays Premier League club have agreed a fee of around 20million euros (£14.4million) for the 19-times capped Dutch midfielder.

Newcastle hope to complete the deal before the squad departs for a pre-season tour of the United States this weekend.

“Georginio Wijnaldum has left the players’ hotel in Evian-les-Bains,” PSV technical manager Marcel Brands said on the club’s official website.

“The 24-year-old captain is on his way to England to reach a personal agreement there with Newcastle United.”

    OP

Granted on the first team football thing…but he could have signed for quite a few mid-table clubs and got that. Including us if we had gone for him. I just dont think the players hated pardew, i think the “get me out of here” was more down to charvers coaching and the owners lack of ambition. I think, Even if bore-master percy was still here, with a new coaching team, we would still be a more attractive prospect than we were. I still think we are better off now with SM than with the King, though. Hopefully there wont be the frustrating reversions back to defence, even when attack was working. Boiled my p1ss that did.

Im trying to be optimistic, but I can’t until this window shuts.

I want to see who we sell first before I start getting excited.

It’s great seeing us finally starting to make a move but this regime has taught me one thing, to be cautious.

I hope this is not replacing like for like here and then eventually standing still as club at the end of the window with not building on the players we have and actually adding the quality in depth that is needed to compete all year round on all fronts.

It’s fair to say there isn’t really a midfielder like Wijnaldum at St James’ Park right now. Some comparisons have been made between the Dutchman and Moussa Sissoko, but the fact is that Wijnaldum is a full five inches shorter than the Frenchman at just 5ft 9in.
Both are dynamic in possession, that much is true, but Wijnaldum is more pacey and tries to beat players with his skill and guile, whereas Sissoko uses his sheer athleticism.
It will be interesting to see where Newcastle play the Dutchman, as fitting him into a system alongside both Sissoko and Siem de Jong will not necessarily be straightforward. The 24-year-old can be employed out wide or through the centre though, so his versatility is a desirable commodity.
He will certainly excite Toon supporters in the terraces.

Newcastle United are now being linked with a move for Nicolas Nkoulou.

Nkoulou is a 25 year old central defender who plays for Marseille and is Cameroon’s Captain.

Moving from Monaco to Marseille for £3m in 2011, The Times report that Newcastle could move for the defender who has only one year left on his contract at the French club.

A number of clubs have been linked with the player, including Arsenal and recently Lyon, but Marseille are said to be determined not to sell to another French club.

A fee of £7m has been put on the player’s head and both Villa and Sunderland have also been credited with interest.

Standing at 5ft 11 he wouldn’t be the kind of central defender you’d pair with Fabricio Coloccini, though many Newcastle fans now believe that the days of the current United Captain being an automatic starter are behind him.

With news this morning that Georginio Wijnaldum is on his way to Tyneside to discuss terms, having that one signing almost over the line does then give any additional new transfer stories a fraction more credibility as the club look at last to invest in credible players.

With Aleksandar Mitrovic also looking like a strong possibility to actually sign for Newcastle as well, surely money will also be spent on the defence.

Got to comment on the Obertron fan club.
He returned from the summer last year and this year in absolutely superb shape. His physique was fantastic and he was obviously working out during the summers.
And that my friends really is where it ends.
He’s scored 6 league goals from his days at Bordeaux in 2006 – up to the present time.
Yesterday there was a clip on Sky – it was the tale about Sterling not turning up. They showed him scoring against us. We also saw Obertron trotting back at attempting a pathetic put the foot in tackle that was useless.
It reminded me of really how poor he is – not his fault but he’s just not up to standard.

  • 58 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 10, 2015 at 11:12 AM

Aleksandar Mitrovic’s move to Newcastle United could be completed in the “coming hours” – according to the player’s agent Pini Zahavi.

The player is understood to have held talks with the Magpies over a five year deal with the fee for the striker the still to be agreed.

But Zahavi is confident that the deal will be completed, he said: “The formalisation of the transfer will be made ??in the coming hours.

“Mitrovic and will sign a contract for five seasons for the former club of Philippe Albert.”

The media in Belgium have gone big with the Mitrovic story this morning with Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley close to the breakthough that fans have been waiting for.

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren said yesterday that the club are “close” to completed deals.

And when asked if he would have players on the plane for the trip to the United States he said: “That would be nice.”

    @rotonda + why

i agree they should both pick up and i think cabella could be a huge success as impact sub.

the reason river on my to go list is that even if he does hit his top form it still wouldnt be good enough for us imo looking at his past records ect.

a 1 in 4 goal striker (0.22 rate) could do a job for us i’m sure but we have perez/arma who can do that job just as well and cisse and (fingers crossed) mitrovic who could/should do it a lot lot better.

From your list I’m not sure about Riviere and Marveaux.

Riviere is relatively knew to the club and if sold could be an admission of recruitment failure but given that Carr is on the Board and Pardew, Carver and Stone are no longer with us I expect all the blame to be directed at the gang of three with Riviere staying.

Marveaux is an interesting dilemma. He has the skills without question but was certainly lacking in motivation and toughness when he played. Can the new coaching team turn him around ? I would imagine he may be the first person to enter Steve Black’s office.

    We’ve paid the asking price.
    We’ve got the player.
Now let’s not see it fall apart over the personal terms.
Signing Wijnaldum must make it easier to seal the deal with Mitrovic.

Now we need at least one centre back and credible defensive midfielder who can read the game, pass the the ball, and take control against a top midfield.

i completely agree with you !

that was a personal list of who i would but like you say theres no chance the club would take a hit on him es so soon.

and marv ye he has talent and was my personal tip to be a star before he signed for us and his main fault is his lazyness and motivation that these current coaches should be able to work with but i cant help thinking if i had to lose one of siem/marv/vukic and now wijnaldum all for the same one position who would be surplus and imo vukic has the edge over marv for his age ect.

Steve McClaren wants 5 new players at Newcastle.
Newcastle United are wanting to bring in 5 players to strengthen the squad and each players value is £10m to £15m !
McClaren would not say which 5 players they are ?
    But 4 we are aware of are -Wijnaldum / Matip / Mitrovic / Austin / ? /…N’kolou

I’m not sure about Austin certainly at the £15M asking price.

From his perspective, if as so it seems that Mitrovic will sign for us today it must put question marks in his mind about who is the number one (or number nine) striker.

rather than scratching around to make a squad up as we were much of last season. Injuries aside we all know we have never had a depth to the team, and once we sustain numerous injuries the squad simply cannot cope. Thus relying on fringe players that have never been good enough

I have decided to start commenting again as i have seen a drastic improvement since the end of last season. Thanks to Steve Mc and his communication skills with the fans. He cleary understands how a club our size should be run from his experience with man u.

I hope he plays the same style football as he did with derby as i watched them a fair few times last season and they were very impresive untill the injuries hit.

Wijnaldum and mitrovic would both be very very good additions. But we need defenders

Newcastle are set to make their first signing of the summer with Holland international Georginio Wijnaldum arriving from PSV.
The 24-year-old will be on Tyneside on Friday for talks and to undergo a medical.
Sportsmail reported on Wednesday that United were confident of making Wijnaldum their first piece of business after negotiations between the two clubs took place in Holland on Tuesday.

The next step was selling the club to the midfielder and he will now meet head coach Steve McClaren before the expected completion of a deal in the region of £13million.
Wijnaldum will join Newcastle on their tour of the United States should the transfer hit no snags.
Meanwhile, Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is also on the verge of a move to St James’ Park.
The 20-year-old Serb – who scored 26 goals last season – has been a long-term target and talks are now underway over another deal in the region of £13m.

  • 100 BandB // Jul 10, 2015 at 11:51 AM

Perhaps a properly motivated and handled Cisse with genuine competition for his place might be a better bet for one more season than Austin.

I agree with Blackley that the most depressing thing looking at the squad as it stands is the shortage of players with talent who have fight in them.

Maybe a shot of ambition from the club is exactly what some of them need.

  • 101 Jail for Ashley // Jul 10, 2015 at 11:53 AM

    BandB,
Competition for places is the key to success.

  • 102 BandB // Jul 10, 2015 at 11:56 AM

    Why Oh Why,

I think grim satisfaction and determination to see it through would summarise the mood of many better than “on a high.”

Those who have been constantly on a high for years and refused to utter a word in criticism of the club should not be telling others to button it.

If today is what we hope it is, it will be no thanks to them.

Some of the “extremely positive” people have been championing the idea that we need no signings at all.

How can this be their day to gloat?

I’m not really sure why I need humble pie though, after all my monicker is not ”jail for ashley”.

my biggest beef with ash has always been the people he employed. I freely admit I wasn’t enraptured by SM’s appointment at the time, but since Cathro came on board too, I am really starting to warm to SM. just using a football in training was an instant upgrade on pardew and carver!

and yes the fat lady hasn’t sung on any of these deals yet and yes, i, like many, was cynical but i guess sometimes you just have to go with the flow and enjoy the moment. long may it continue.

I agree about the need for good coaching. I also agree your list of the players that could be in demand. But it’s just a handful and that’s why I say the squad needs a massive overhaul.

You seem to be suggesting that good coaches could transform the rest to make them much more saleable. Even if it were possible, have we got the coaches to do it? I suspect not. Cathro looks promising but is he just cutting his teeth and picking up valuable experience here?

  • 116 Grafton83 // Jul 10, 2015 at 12:14 PM

If a shot of ambition and some sessions with Steve Black don’t do the trick, nothing will.

But to me, McClaren’s top 8 target isn’t ambition to achieve in the league. We want top 4. Wholly unrealistic with our squad of course but that’s got to be the stated target. Even his boss declared it. McClaren should have a few sessions with Black.

  • 120 BandB // Jul 10, 2015 at 12:21 PM

    Jail,

    Competition is the key.
I think we need a new holding player. Not a destroyer, but someone who gets the covering work done efficiently and sets up play.
Tiote probably didn’t ever imagine he’d still be here. I think it is time to let him go. He was rarely that player anyway.
Colback was a bits and pieces player for Sunderland. Handy to have. But I don’t think he improved greatly beyond that level over the whole season.
I haven’t seen him play in the flesh, and I can imagine he is one of those players you need to see in order to properly appreciate.
But his yellow card rate suggests to me that he is being caught out too often.
Our long-standing problem is that the midfield and attack has never been joined up, and so we concede the middle of the pitch to most opposition.
We need a general to seize that ground and hold it, while having the speed of thought and touch to dictate play.
That player has Colback’s number on his shirt.
