Newcastle Make Two Massive Breakthroughs In Transfer Market

10:02 am, Friday, July 10th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 44 Comments

With the upbeat mood at the Newcastle training center yesterday, when Steve McClaren invited the press in and answered questions about almost anything the journalists asked, news today that Newcastle are very close to singing both Georginio Wijnaldum of PSV and Aleksandar Mitrovic of Anderlecht.

Georginio Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum – on his way to have medical at Newcastle

Both fees are thought to be around €18M which is £12.5M – and will be record for transfer under Mike Ashley – and beat the £10.3M we paid to Deportivo for Coloccini in the summer of 2008.

This is the Tweet the PSV club have sent out this morning concerning Wijnaldum:

“PSV are nearing an agreement with Newcastle United and Wijnaldum has been given permission to finalize negotiations and undergo a medical examination,”

Here is more information on the Wijnaldum deal.

Georginio is now on his way to Newcastle for the medical and he has been talking to Vurnon Anita about Newcastle and he is said to be very keen to join the club.

That deal could even go through today if the medical goes through quickly but maybe no announcement until tomorrow.

The deal for Mitrovic is not quite as advanced but news today from Belgium that progress was made yesterday as the momentum picked up significantly.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

Aleksandar Mitrovic – significant progress made yesterday

The deal is very close for the 20 year-old Serbian striker and he is being offered a five year deal to move to Newcastle.

A report in says significant progress was made yesterday when Newcastle officials were in talks with Anderlecht.

Here’s more news on the situation with Mitrovic.

The two signings, if they go through, will cost Newcastle around £25M – and that would be a good start to this summer’s transfer window.

It would also show that Mike Ashley was serious when he said on May 24th that he would give the Board big money to spend this summer.

If we get these two through the door it will make it a lot easier to sign the other three players that Steve McClaren wants in this summer.

That’s because it will show Newcastle are really serious about strengthening the team for next season.

We could have two very good pieces of news before tomorrow night,  and both players could even be on the plane to  the US on Sunday.

That would be fantastic.

Comments welcome.

Get these deals wrapped up today!

    Then CB next.

I see Cathro has got more praise from yesterdays open training session, he was getting the players to play a high pressing game.

I think a few players that may have been written off by the majority could come good under this new coaching team, ie Vuckic and Bigi. Will be interesting to see how the likes of Marveaux do as well.

Just want Williamson gone. based on our current squad i’d play all of these ahead of Wilo at cb, Colo, Taylor, Dummett, Lascelles, Satka, Janmaat, Good, Gillesphey.

  • 2 NezzaNUFC // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:07 AM

get these two lads in and scrap Austin!

Perez will be our new number 9.

Perez + Mitrovic = Holy Shit!

  • 3 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:09 AM

The squad still needs a massive overhaul. We need players with real hunger and a winning mentality. I don’t see any.

  • 4 NezzaNUFC // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:09 AM

Guys we won’t get a CB in

    Willo, Collo, Saylor, Jam

There’s the 4 CB’s so unless one of them get sold we won’t get another CB in

  • 5 NezzaNUFC // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:11 AM

    Blackley and Brownlie

Then obviously your not seeing the bigger picture, you can’t judge our players on performance under Pardew and Carver.

  • 6 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:11 AM

so is Siem de jong on his way out? they both play in the same position right?

  • 7 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:12 AM

ayoze perez should still be our main striker. he reminds me of javier hernandez but even better.

  • 8 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:13 AM

I’ve never seen these two prospective signings so I won’t be getting carried away by sexy foreign names. More often than not the foreign imports dont deserve the excitement. I’ll wait to see if they’re dictating the midfield and banging in goals; or taking a couple of years “to adjust to the EPL” because they’re foreign.

  • 9 Jail for Ashley // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:14 AM

    That’s my biggest fear

  • 10 NezzaNUFC // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:15 AM

No SDJ gets injured ( a lot ) o could be a good rotation player what Newcastle are missing these days.

    Rotation brings success!

  • 11 NezzaNUFC // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:15 AM

    Jail for Ashley

    Which post mate?

    The CB’s?

  • 12 Mister Tuff // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:16 AM

Looks like our Chief Scout has done a good job here if the rumours are correct.
Players of this standard must have been at the top of his list.

  • 13 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:18 AM

You may be right. The squad may be a lot better than I think. Has Pardew ruined many of them and made them bad players? Will they become good players now he’s gone? They’ve got a clean slate so they will have a boost. I just don’t see it.

  • 14 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:19 AM

If we sign these two, sign a couple of CB’s (with 2 of colo saylor and willo going), then one or two other new faces to freshen things up, and i would be happy. 5-6 new players. Release some dead wood to free up squad places, and robert’s your mams’ brother.

  • 15 NezzaNUFC // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:19 AM

    Blackley and Brownlie

Mitrovic and GW are the type of players who can break in straight away and perform good like Perez.

They are the type of players who can adapt straight away in any league.

  • 16 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:21 AM

Our chief scout has managed to identify two of Europe’s better players (we’ll see) at large fees and high wages no doubt. Well done Graham.

  • 17 NezzaNUFC // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:21 AM

    Blackley and Brownlie

The players we had under Pardew were flair attacking players but Pardew had them hoofing the ball to no man’s land.

Palace fans will soon learn this with the arrival of Cabaye.

  • 18 Jail for Ashley // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:22 AM

So Blackas why did you get banned ?

  • 19 lesh // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:23 AM

    Sexy names?

Now if it was Gina Lollobrigida I could understand!

  • 20 Ron Knee // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:23 AM

    How to pronounce his name:

  • 21 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:24 AM

I hope they’re a cut above Perez. The lad did well for being “one for the future” but he’s got to improve massively this season if we want to win something with him playing.

  • 22 NezzaNUFC // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:24 AM

One problem with this is Newcastle didn’t even approach him nor wanted him back.

  • 23 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:24 AM

Cabaye has gone back to Percy, then. So players do like him, it seems. Still wasn’t right for nufc imo, but he is obviously doing something right at palace.

I suspect apparent naffness of suposed good players at nufc was mainly down to the coaching (carvup) rather than king P. Thats why we became even more horrific when charver took charge.

I am starting to look forward to life under SM. Just need those 3-4 more players.

  • 24 optimistic prime // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:24 AM

    Haha, no winning mentality.

Yip, they give the Dutch league to each team on a regular basis, there’s no competing.

We all know he can’t see the wood for the trees. The sun must have got to his head sitting on his ride on!

  • 25 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:26 AM

As reported by Belgian media outlet HLN, Anderlecht forward Aleksandar Mitrovic has agreed terms with Newcastle ahead of a summer transfer.

It is stated that he is ready to confirm a five-year contract with the club, with the transfer expected to be finalised this week.

The Tyneside club opened formal negotiations with Anderlecht yesterday, and it now appears as if a deal is just days from being completed. In the report is states that the deal could be completed this week, although there are no references as to whether the Magpies have had an offer accepted by his current club.

With talks ongoing with the player before a transfer fee has actually been agreed, there is a chance that a deal could still stall, but the report suggests that a deal is close to being struck between the two clubs.

There is no indication as to a fee Newcastle will have to pay to bring Mitrovic to the Premier League, although it is stated that Anderlecht have been asking for roughly £13 million for the 20-year-old.

If a deal does get completed, the Magpies will be signing a striker of real ability and potential, and they will be hoping he continues his prolific scoring feats in the Premier League.

Will you be pleased with the signing of Mitrovic?

  • 26 Moonraker15 // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:26 AM

Much as we need the new players and I am really optimistic now, I think our coaching team will get a vast improvement out of some of the existing squad who were sadly neglected by the previous load of numpties.

  • 27 NezzaNUFC // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:27 AM

Mitrovic is in similar mold to Kane – enough said really.

  • 28 Toonfan8 // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:27 AM

    Blackley and Brownlie
i think there were given a lot of chances to british players, who just cant make it…Campbell, Ferguson,Streete…not to mention what we have now Williamson isnt good enough, Bigirimana cant make it as well…its not about what nationality players have, its all about quality….

  • 29 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:27 AM

Georginio Wijnaldum and what he will bring to the party.

  • 30 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:27 AM

Player disillusion could also be down to the owners philosophy, so hopefully this APPARENT change of direction by jabba might help with that. Still not holding my breath until this half decent (although delayed) start is built upon.

  • 31 Jail for Ashley // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:31 AM

Nezza, I went from defending Pardew to not being able to stand the sight of him. But Cabaye joining him at Palace should put to bed the theories that players wanted to leave because of him rather than
the huge lack of ambition shown by the owner.

  • 32 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:32 AM

See he can strike with both feet.

  • 33 optimistic prime // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:33 AM

I wouldn’t write to much in Cabaye going to Palace.

Owen signed for us, it couldn’t be more obvious he didn’t want to be here.

    Beggars can’t be choosers!

  • 34 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:34 AM

See what happens when you don’t buy a season ticket?

  • 35 why oh why // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:34 AM

No de jong is not going anywhere
wijinaldiiiium has already had assurances that they will both play . the eam is being adapted to fit both in to the starting 11

  • 36 Moonraker15 // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:34 AM

I think Cabaye didn’t have other options an he knows there’s no competition for places at Palace so he can prepare for France international matches.

There was a distinct lack of interest but he is nearly 30 and it would never work out coming back to Toon.

New blood is what we’re getting!

  • 37 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:35 AM

    You have earned Ashley’s respect.

  • 38 why oh why // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:37 AM

I also believe that the likes of Cabella ,Riviere etc will be completely different players under SM, top coach , on Cisse I would keep him. a lot don’t seem to realise we have some top players here, unfortunately they suffered under sub standars coaching i.e pardew and carver, stone . now we have new coaches hungry coaches coaches that actually have a clue what it takes to win and actually playfootball.

  • 39 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:40 AM

Siem de Jong, he is also two footed.

  • 40 SA Toon // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:41 AM

I don’t want to speak too soon, but it certainly does feel as if things might be a little different this season. The set-up under SM seems a lot more professional than anything we’ve experienced over the last few years and his openness in interviews is refreshing. If we can sign both Wijnaldum and Mitrovic, I think we will have done some really good business and things will really be looking up. Definitely, we will then need to address CB, but if we can get these two “over the line” I have little doubt that we will follow through on sorting out the back line as well. Have to admit, I’m starting to get the buzz……

  • 41 ITUNDERASHELL // Jul 10, 2015 at 10:44 AM

SA Toon, sell Sissoko to liverpool and buy two REAL cbs and we are ready to rock. and it will be proper football.

  • 42 The overrated Frenchman // Jul 10, 2015 at 11:17 AM

Looking at the photos etc. it looks like Cathro is very much the fore. I think Simpson is there to put out the witch’s hats, hand out the bibs and collect the balls at the end. You do need someone in that role if course. John Carver did that extremely well, that was his great strength, and I think the team suffered when he was removed from those duties.
