Benfica, Porto And Roma In Battle With Newcastle For Striker

5:41 pm, Saturday, July 11th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 60 Comments

It seems that Newcastle are certainly not the first choice of Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, although hopes were raised yesterday afternoon when his agent Pini Zahavi arrived in Newcastle and said that Aleksandar would be signing for Newcastle.

But since then it looks like other clubs are still interested in the striker and still involved trying to make a deal for him with Anderlecht – and those three clubs can all offer him Champions League football which he seems to crave.

Aleksandar Mitrovic – four clubs still after him
Pretty in Pink

Roma were one of the clubs interested in him, and it looks like they are still interestd in him according to a report late yesterday in – which they called an exclusive.

This is the piece in

¨The riddle of which club he will  join will soon be solved.¨

¨The Anderlecht striker is coveted throughout Europe and on his trail are Benfica (interested), Porto (who would offer €15M plus two players), Roma (awaiting the development of the transfer of Dzeko) and Newcastle.¨

¨ contacted Alderlecht’s Herman van Holsbeeck , their Sporting Director exclusively,  and it seems the 20 year-old could sign for a club very soon:¨

“We are talking with several teams,” “Will his future lie in Italy? I mention no names, but we are very busy.”

The article does a good job of listing where the other three clubs stand with regard to getting the striker.

Roma really want Dzeko as their first choice, and Porto don’t really have the money, so it seems they are offering players in exchange for the striker.

But we would be surprised if they will offer two players is in addition to €15M – and Benfica are probably the dark horse.

It’s a good question whether Newcastle should bring this lad in,  when it is clear he really wants to join a club with Champions League participation.

We assume his agent Pini Zahavi is still in Newcastle today.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Do you have a direct line to Ed ?
You and he between you saved me from a lynching

  • 3 hwtltoon4life // Jul 11, 2015 at 5:52 PM

I think we should go for Charlie instead. First, no matter how many goals he scored for anderlecht, he is still an unproven premier league player. Second, he is too much a hassle. It is obvious thst nufc is his second best option and why would we want to have a player who is not loyal. The consequence can be disastrous and disrupt the harmony in the dressing room.

  • 4 JDdubai // Jul 11, 2015 at 5:53 PM

Its good this is the level of player we are looking at but think our only chance to get these kinds of players is to do so quickly and quietly.

Not sure if it is us who have taken too long and now it is public or the player and agent wanting it to be public so he gets the move he really wants.

Either way its understandable that we arent his first choice and although id be happy to have him i would be thinking from the start that his eye will be on the door at all times.

I hope we have a decent backup option as this one is a long shot.

  • 5 Charlietoon // Jul 11, 2015 at 5:53 PM

Bring him in and be realistic about where we are as a team right now. We are rebuilding and are a bottom half of the table club. If he comes in and gets 20 goals we’ll be most likely looking at a decent league finish and massive interest from other clubs. If we can keep him for a second year and he does the same we’ll be a top half team and probably 40 mill richer. At that point maybe we have rebuilt our reputation to the point where players will want to come for other reasons. If the lad is good enough for Champions League we cant hold it against him for using as a stepping stone to get there. It will do us both some good.

Serbian bloke isn’t keen. There’s three ladies interested and we’re the ugly ladie.

  • 7 Jib // Jul 11, 2015 at 5:57 PM

    He wants Roma
    CL footy
    La Dolce Vita
    A few hours from Serbia
But the buggers have gone and bought Dzeko
His second choice is Porto (it was his first until they told him the wages )
    Time to bodyswerve this chancer
Serbs are nowt but bother anyway

Newcastle are obviously trying hard to bring in quality players. So far so good. Good players are always in demand so they will be harder to recruit. Wijnaldum was an excellent quality buy and does demonstrate there is a lot going on behind the scenes. As one of the club’s many critics I am prepared to be patient to see who else Newcastle will recruit and then judge them. So far so good !

People are not intentionally ganging up. Its just that many happen to share a similar opinion to a particularly outrageous claim.

  • 10 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:00 PM

But doesnt that make us the nailed on choice? I have heard the so called ugly ones are the most grateful….. ok this is sexist, i better stop. Sorry for any offence

  • 11 Jib // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:01 PM

    Good point well made
    Mikalfas had it right
Offer him what he wants with a monster buy out clause and see if he takes it

  • 12 Jib // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:02 PM

Mark will be talking about mouses ears next

  • 13 mactoon // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:03 PM

If we are his last choice and he wants CL football forget him and his “lets start a bidding war by telling Roma he is signing for Newcastle” agent. Get Bamford or Austin in

  • 14 Douglas // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:05 PM

Wijnaldum is the real deal. Mitrovich is trouble

  • 15 mickalfas // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:05 PM

We’re being used to get his wages up ,he has no interest in coming here
    Walk away !

  • 16 welshgeordie9 // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:05 PM

So with the latest rumour going round, would anyone swap Cabella for Thauvin.

  • 17 Whumpie // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:05 PM

I’d love to see him here, but it’s not looking good. TBH, we need defenders more than anything else. Wake me up when we have 4 new defenders and another striker signed up and in the squad. Until then, next season isn’t looking any more promising than the last.

  • 18 Whumpie // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:07 PM

On a less depressing note, there’s a new Facebook page started up for Toon Army stranded down here in the South West. Please give it a ‘like’ and help get numbers up so we can end our exile and at least have some sympathetic company in the pub on match days!

  • 19 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:08 PM

Id rather keep Cabella. He has already had a season to adjust, wheras thauvin would probably need one himself. We might as well see what SM can do with Cabella and co.

  • 20 Jib // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:08 PM

    Rome – Belgrade 1Hr 20 mins

You cudmt make it up…..u keep getting it wrong. If u think i am happy with the regime u are wrong. But i smell positive changes. Too many guys were whinging for weeks that we wud get nobody and we would keep charva. Well sorry, but they ( u ? ) were wrong. Patience is and was, needed. Hopefully more players to follow and soon. Its not about “na na na” or whatever u say

  • 22 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:09 PM

This Motrovic thing smacks of the time we were going to allegedly snaffle Rooney from under man u’s nose. Utter b0ll0cks

  • 23 Belfast // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:11 PM

Haha No Markass we’re only in with a chance if the other ladies go home early.

  • 24 Munster Mag // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:12 PM

Bamford isnt going to improve us much

  • 25 Belfast // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:13 PM

No Welshie it would be pointless swapping like for like. If he ain’t pulling up trees in France he won’t do it in England.

  • 26 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:14 PM

The point i am making is that it was totally logical for us to think carver would stay. After 8 years…8 YEARS that is….of broken promises, why would any logical mind think anything different?? Just because this sudden break from the norm has happened, doesn’t mean that anyone who thought they would never see it suddenly deserve ridicule, and should have to appologise. In fact, many of those who refused to renew STs and joined in protests, deserve THANKS. I certainly thank them. They are the reason for these changes. It needs to continue.

  • 28 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:16 PM

We still have hope, if Mitrovic has an equally good player as a mate, who is willing to “Jump on the grenade”!

  • 29 Tsunki // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:20 PM

Munster I think you missed the point about the Carver complaints. Based on the appalling penny pinching track record of the owner and the pathetic chancing of this clubs sporting future by not just continuing with Pardew until he went of his own accord they then admitted they never had a plan to replace him, then merely promoted the vibe arranger fir convenience, and thought they’d ride out the season with him thinking he couldn’t possibly be bad enough to take us down, which he did his damndest to thwart. It was entirely reasonable for fans to assume they would continue with their budget rude sock puppet ad nauseum if they could float in the premier league.

Did someone mention gatecrashing a wedding?

  • 31 Douglas // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:23 PM

In 3 years time we’ll sell Wijnaldum to a top 4 club for 35 million. In 3 years time Cabaye will be worth 4 million.

  • 32 Tsunki // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:23 PM

What is a vibe arranger? Who programs these things? Why would I type ‘cone’ for it to be corrected to ‘vibe’? How is it likely I would be wanting to arrange ‘vibes’? I would strangle the idiot who programmed this.

  • 33 Jib // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:25 PM

    Thomas Muller is only 25
He seems to have been around for years

  • 34 Munster Mag // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:26 PM

Cudnt make it up…im not asking for an apology or ridiculing anybody. But there are too many moaners on here who whinge that we will sign nobody etc. Sorry but they were wrong so people need to take a deep breath and hang in there

  • 35 Tsunki // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:27 PM

KC that must have been a pretty cool day, good for them!

  • 36 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:27 PM

The best thing Newcastle could do is to sign some more big names in the other needed positions…it would show Mitrovic we do have ambition (I haven’t bought it completely myself though)

  • 37 Mister Tuff // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:28 PM

See Man U have signed Schweinsteiger – decent player but has a nasty side. They are making a big effort to buy success this next season.

  • 38 Tsunki // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:30 PM

And the signing players etc. thing has followed the sacking carver and getting a proper manager thing which followed the Season Ticket slowdown which followed the fan protests at the lack of investment which was killing the club which followed………………………

  • 39 Jib // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:32 PM

Muller is only on €5 million p.a. at Bayern thats only £70,000 per week !!!!
No wonder the square heids are heading for the Prem

  • 40 Tsunki // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:32 PM

Anyone notice we still intend to start the pre season jollies with our old friends Obertan, Gouffran, Riviere, Williamson……… I don’t think it’s quite fashionable to drop the ‘squad clearout’ concept too soon.

  • 41 Toonfan8 // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:33 PM

Mitrovic is very good striker, he is what we really need. Powerful, great heading ability, can hold up ball and has good technique. He is worth a little bit of waiting. If we wrap him up we will have great young forward. Next Alan Shearer if he come…

  • 42 geordieboy83 // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:33 PM

Mr tuff I’m going to get ridiculed for this but i actually rate g widdy higher now than schweinsteiger

  • 43 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:35 PM

But you keep saying “they were wrong, they were wrong”. And we have been “hanging in” for 8 years. Patience has utterly run out, and it is the expression of that loss of patience that has caused the change. We were right to keep moaning. If we hadn’t, nothing would have changed.

  • 44 Toonfan8 // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:35 PM

and of course we have to get rid of some deadwood Williamson,Obertan,Ferguson and Gouffran for start….

  • 45 Our Toon // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:35 PM

It’s funny when he was reported to sign alot were happy, now he’s having 2nd thoughts and let’s face it… rightly so he become a player with a bad attitude, bad apple for the changing room.

Can the Charlie Austin nonsense stop as well, his wife calls the shots not him. I said yesterday what do we do with a player whose wife ends up missing the London lifestyle? Will his head be in it 100%? Will he he happy when she’s not? There’s more baggage with Austin than there is with Mitrovic…..and Mitrovic is 10 times the player Austin is!!

  • 46 Mister Tuff // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:36 PM

    who is g widdy.

  • 47 Jib // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:36 PM

Schweinsteiger is 31 on 1st August
Wijnaldum and he cost the same dosh
The Kraut is on 5 times the wages
I know who has the best deal

  • 48 Our Toon // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:38 PM

Bell saved himself again buddy lol

  • 49 BandB // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:38 PM

I predicted we would sign six.
    Before the season ended.

  • 50 Jib // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:38 PM

    G Wijnaldum = G Widdy

  • 51 Toonfan8 // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:39 PM

Schweinsteiger was injured last season and his legs arent that dynamic like they used to be…If I have to choose between him and Gino, I would definetely go for Gino…but Basty Fantasty may come good great signing for MU…

  • 52 mickalfas // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:40 PM

Apparently Mitrovic wants a bit of sun!
Can someone not tell him that we have a weather phenomem on tyneside ,and even in the bleak midwinter its still T-shirt weather haha

  • 53 geordieboy83 // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:40 PM

Tuff soz mate its wijnaldum but I couldn’t be bothered to type it

  • 54 Jail for Ashley // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:40 PM

Are Cabaye and Vynaldum the same sort of player ? If not your point is moot.

  • 55 Tsunki // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:40 PM

Jeff – I can’t be bothered to mock people on benefit btw. Why would someone who has been mostly self employed all his life and paid all his state dues but isn’t eligible for sick pay or even a council tax break want to take the mickey out of a professional baby factory earning twice as much as him, tax free, for watching daytime tv? I can’t see the motive for doing that 😉

  • 56 Bambams // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:41 PM

One very promising signing so far.
    Rumours of another. …
Wini did it for me, looks like an honest pro who was wanting to ‘be part of his plans’…..
    Again fellas ‘time will tell’

    Mike Williamson – CL superstar!

  • 58 corkypants // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:49 PM

Dont think i have ever seen anyone so happy to join us!!! Go on gini, he is guna be a fan favorite with his attitude, his reaction when he walked into the stadium was brilliant (its big innit)

  • 59 honest fan // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:51 PM

Think we should stop chasing this player mitrovic his heart is clearly elsewhere which is no problem just think we are wasting our time I think Javier hernandez is a really good shout think he would fit in well with what we have and are moving towards plus he would be hungry to prove United and all overs that he had what it takes

  • 60 honest fan // Jul 11, 2015 at 6:53 PM

And could get him pretty cheap I’d say
