It looks like Newcastle will sign PSV captain Georginio Wijnaldum today, but we were also interested in bringing in Marco van Ginkel from Chelsea next season – either on loan or on a permanent deal – but Chelsea have announced his is joining Stoke City for the season on loan.
Marco van Ginkel – on loan to Stoke
This is what Chelsea have put on their web-site:
The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at AC Milan, where he established himself as an important member of the side.
The Dutch midfielder moved to Stamford Bridge from Vitesse Arnhem in the summer of 2013 and made his debut in a 2-0 win over Hull City.
You can keep updated with Van Ginkel’s progress on this website.
Chelsea are also looking to sign goalkeeper Asmir Begovic from Stoke, and he can come in and challenge Thibaut Courtois for the number one spot, with Petr Cech now at Arsenal – a great acquisition by the Gunners.
That hasn’t happened yet, but Stoke have beaten Middlesbrough to former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given – who was signed as a free agent yesterday.
Shay is now 39.
Crystal Palace signed former Newcastle play-maker Yohan Cabaye yesterday, and that has reminded Geordie fans we still haven’t replaced him with a skillful box-to-box midfielder.
That’s what 22 year-old van Ginkel is – so we are hoping Newcastle have somebody else lined up.
Since both Wijnaldum and Siem de Jong are number 10 players – withdrawn strikers – maybe McClaren will use one of them as a number 10 and the other in central midfield – to add some creativity for next season?
Or even push one of them up front as an out-and-out striker if we cannot get strikers through the door this summer.
The Newcastle head coach has already assured Georginio he will find a way of accommodating both Dutch midfielders in the first team next season.
It would have been good to have signed Cabaye – but he left the club under difficult circumstances only 18 months ago.
We assume Newcastle want to bring in a younger player-maker for next season – we hope Newcastle want to bring in a younger player-maker for next season.
🙂
What do you think?

Comment #1Interesting to hear Bigi was playing last night, always thought he had some potential to come good. Did Curtis Good play any part?
it seems we were all getting ahead of ourselves yesterday, so deperate were we for some good news!
I really hope Mitrovic still happens, though now even Wiji seems to be dragging on too long now to feel entirely confident.
Wiji, Mitrovic and any of N’Kolou, Veltman or Matip arriving, with willo, saylor, colo and Obertan, along with Woodman snr all exiting stage left would paint a very happy and hopeful picture.

Comment #2We shouldn’t take any players on loan unless there is a definite option to buy at the end of it.

Comment #3Why this deals take so long? Just announce Wijnaldum and go for Mitrovic and Matip…give them terms and if they want bring them, if not turn to other targets…but I would love them all three, Mitrovic will give us power upfront, just what we lacked, he seems like more technical Giroud…

Comment #6JFA – fully agree with the need for an agreement to buy as part of any loan deal ……. although even this seems not to count for anything – see Southampton and Alberwield

Comment #9mickalfas – the position we are in we need to respect any player in black n white. Can you blame players for thinking twice when our own fans (myself included) boycott all things FatAsh, our ambition relates to EPL survival only – this is their livley hood

Aye, not much you can do if the player himself doesn’t want to come.

Comment #13According t Mitrovic’s dad we have offered for him but they “are waiting on another club”.
If they openly are looking for another club, do we want him coming just because the club he really wants didnt pay the fee?
I hope we have other CF irons in the fire.

Fair point, but I’d personally rather have players who are happy to come here
Will they ever give 100%,when they are busy touting themselves all over the place

Comment #15Mickalfas – If a player is touting himself – then you would hope thats backed up with good displays on the pitch – and a rising price (argh fell into FatAsh mode). I would be more concerned with upsetting the team – which Mitroivic does have a bit of a rep
