Newcastle should be able to announce their first capture of the summer today with Georginio Wijnaldum expected to sign along the dotted line, after completing his medical yesterday.
Georginio has been seen smiling in Newcastle, and it’s pretty obvious he wants to sign on at Newcastle.
He was Dutch Player Of The Year last season – and is one terrific player who can both score and create goals.
Georginio Wijnaldum wants to join Newcastle
It’s a bit of a coup for Newcastle, and he will definitely improve the side next season, and will join the growing list of Dutch players at the club who already include Krul, Janmaat, Anita and Siem de Jong.
The other player we are (possibly) expected to sign is 20 year-old Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who Graham Carr has been tracking all season.
His agent Pini Zahavi arrived in Newcastle yesterday afternoon, but the deal has been delayed – and it seems they are waiting for another club to make an offer.
Aleksandar Mitrovic – his agent is in Newcastle
Porto and Roma are the two clubs who have been interested in him, with Porto struggling to pay the fee and Roma seeming to have Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko as their first choice.
And news yesterday was that Roma officials are flying into Manchester today to try to seal the deal for the Bosnia and Herzegovina striker.
Mitrovic seems to be waiting for a club to come in who plays in the Champions League – and it seems that if that doesn’t happen Newcastle would be the team he joins.
That’s not the best of circumstances to sign somebody – but perhaps if we can still get him through the door the fans could make him feel very happy and appreciated on Tyneside.
Certainly he’s one of the best young strikers in Europe as we pointed out on what he’s already achieved in his short career.
Newcastle could still sign Aleksandar but he doesn’t seem – at least from the outside – to be showing the same keenness to sign for Newcastle that Wijnaldum is.
Steve McClaren last night also hinted there are other players Newcastle are also trying to sign.
