The Newcastle squad to tour America in the next ten days has just been announced on the Newcastle web-site and the lads are flying out to Milwaukee today for their first game which will be on Tuesday night against Club Atlas at Miller Park.
The squad is as follows:
Rolando Aarons, Vurnon Anita, Adam Armstrong, Gael Bigirimana, Papiss Cisse, Jack Colback, Fabricio Coloccini, Karl Darlow, Siem de Jong, Shane Ferguson, Curtis Good, Yoan Gouffran, Massadio Haidara, Daryl Janmaat, Tim Krul, Jamaal Lascelles, Gabriel Obertan, Ayoze Perez, Emmanuel Riviere, Moussa Sissoko, Steven Taylor, Georginio Wijnaldum (joining squad later), Mike Williamson, Freddie Woodman
Rolando Aarons – will get a chance to shine again this pre-season
Here is the squad via playing position.
Goalkeepers: Tim Krul, Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman,
Defenders: Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson, Curtis Good, Jamaal Lascelles, Massadio Haidara, Daryl Janmaat,
Midfielders: Jack Colback, Siem de Jong, Shane Ferguson, Yoan Gouffran, Moussa Sissoko, Rolando Aarons, Vurnon Anita, Gael Bigirimana, Gabriel Obertan, Georginio Wijnaldum (joining the squad later)
Strikers: Papiss Cisse, Ayoze Perez, Adam Armstrong, Emmanuel Riviere
Remy Cabella, Mehdi Abeid and Paul Dummett don’t make the trip because of injury, and goalkeeper Rob Elliot, Cheick Tiote and Sylvain Marveaux are also missing.
The explanation is that all of the above players missing are either nursing injuries or coming back from long term injuries.
However, it could be a decent indication of who are on their way out of the club this summer – Rob Elliot, Cheick Tiote and Sylvain Marveaux.
Here is Newcastle’s full pre-season schedule including the three games in America.

Nottingham Forest were considering a bid for Vuckic – so the club could be keeping him out of the firing line.
He is training

Players left behind – Tiote, Cabella, Abeid, Elliot and Marveaux could they be on there way out. Dummet – most likely needs more time to recover from injury.
We have new coaches and fitness regimes so it would make sense that the long term injuries are gradually evaluated and coached back to fitness- whether or not so they can be sold or rejoin the squad remains to be seen. Abeid might get loaned out as he could yet make the grade and needs playing time to boost fitness and maybe confidence. Elliott probably no room for so on his way ? Tiote – just don’t know. Marveaux might get used in a player deal in France ? Cabella – just needs time on the gym to get more physical ? Dummett – strengthening after injury ?
Time will tell

It’s ok to say target European place finish then that way we have a better chance of reaching our actual target of 8th, but do you not think McClaren will be going out to try and win pretty much every game?!?! I’m almost certain that’s what the other teams in the league do too! I don’t think they just aim for 8th and if they accidentally move up to 7th drop a few points the next game.
I cant imagine his pre-match talk: “right lads, with abit of luck we’ll be 3 down by half time, then Tim you can swap positions with Ayoze for the 2nd half. And don’t be afraid to stick it in our own net if they don’t look like scoring again!”
But @ 85 you say the aim should be to finish as high as you can in sport, so we should be trying to win the league then, not just the European spots?
Reminds me of a similar conversation I had earlier with a different BandB…

I’m wondering whether Woodman, Ferguson and Bigi are only in the US trip because Elliot, Cabella, Tiote and Abeid are not fully fit otherwise they would be back on Tyneside.
I can understand Woodman being included as he clearly is a great prospect. I always liked Bigi but somewhere along the lines he hasn’t progressed although I watched him in the under 21 game that was televised and he was excellent and stood out. As for Ferguson there are far better left wingers and better cover at left back to consider retaining him.
I’m not sure about the future for Tiote, Abeid and Marveaux. Both Tiote and Abeid can do a good job in midfield but I don’t see them as first choice. I believe Colback, de Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum will be first choice. As for Marveaux he needs an attitude change. He has the ball and possession skills that McClaren wants but not the commitment and attitude that McClaren wants.

Comment #131Where’s all this talk of ntep coming? He’s a good young player, rapid, can bring the ball up the pitch in no time and is great for counters. He’s not really a striker though and usually plays his best on a left of a three. We do neet wingers though but I would think a right sided one would be more useful considering us having aarons on left, providing he stays fit.
Rudiger would be a very good signing but I can’t see him coming to us, can see a big team coming in for him if he was to move. Erg. Chelsea or bayern. I keep saying this but we need kamil glik a real dominating cb in the terry and vidic mould. He is 27 but for me that’s the perfect age for me. For thos who haven’t seen him, he’s a leader, organiser, big and strong. Very under the radar type of player. Torino fans sing a song about being hardcore like kamil glik lol, so I guess that tells you he is solid.

Comment #137I don’t think we’ll sell Tiote and I hope we don’t sell Marveaux who needs to be given a chance. Mcclaren may think he can get the best out of Tiote.
Thought that Jamie Sterry was gonna be given a chance to prove himself this season now that he’s signed a pro contract

Comment #138Id keep vuckic..not cos im a slovenian.. But the guys probably on 5k/w..and he has potential..
Our squad is quite big atm..so we need to sell colo, willo, marveaux, goufrann, tiote, cisse, saylor, rivi, ferguson, elliot, obertan ..their wages must cost our club ALOT..400k/w?..X 52 = 20 mio + per year..and we just dont get anything in return.. so get rid..
Krul,darlow, Young gk
Haidara,Janmaat, dummet, lescalles, new cb x2
Colback,sissoko, Anita,winaljdum, abeid,sdj, cabella, bigi, vuckic,aarons
Perez,mitrovic, berahino,armstrong
Colback and Anita can also play as fbs
Bigi can replace tiote with an ease..considering tiote form..

I was the one mentioning N’Tep, as I do not quite understand, why so many want us to sign 2 strikers when only one at a time will play.
1 striker and a wide forward makes more sense, I believe. Apart from Aarons, who’s fitness is a worry, we don’t have anyone of real quality for the LW / LF role ..

Comment #145Yeah he didn’t say we were actively trying to qualify for it. I think he said something along the lines of, if we do qualify for the CL, that also counts as “winning something”. Not quite the same as actually winning something though. It would be a tremendous achievement, but it wouldn’t get me to Wembley.
No I didn’t say that, you did. Well actually first you said we should be aiming as high as possible (I.e. 1st place) them a few posts later you changed your mind and said we should just target European places because that way we have a better chance of finishing 8th. I was actually just trying to understand YOUR logic.
What I’M saying is, they’ve set what I would say is a realistic (maybe even slightly ambitious) target for their first season in charge, which if they achieve it gives them the foundations to build for the following season to climb the table again and work towards the CL qualifying places. The league is too competitive now to jump straight in and say, “right champions league this year then” when we’re still a way behind even challenging for 8th at the minute if you ask me.

Comment #146This largely anti-ashley blog wants to give the regime more time to challenge for a champions league spot. 8th wins you nothing. No cup. Not even a badge.
Ashley said he was going to bolt the horse to the cart and go for a Champions League spot. So, whats stopping him spending big this summer and going for it? He’s already got his own choice of manager and back room staff that he believes can take us there.
His biggest critics on this blog are the ones most vocal in saying, “Hang on a minute. Top 4 is too ambitious. We can’t realistically aim for that this season. Give Ashley a break. If we aim for 8th and get it, I’ll be happy. It shows progress.” You couldn’t make it up.
Mickalfas says to me, “… if you think we’re going to catch the top 4 ,your deluded.” That completely misses the point. I’m not predicting we’re going to catch the top 4. I’m the one who keeps saying the squad needs a massive overhaul. I’m not getting carried away with one signing, getting excited snd writing starting line ups and team formations. I’m simply saying that with real ambition, substantial investment in the transfer market, and canny coaching and stewardship, it should be the target.
You rarely get what you want in life by aiming lower than your target. I don’t hear motivational speakers saying don’t be ovetly ambitious in your first year.
Of course, it might be that Ashley was paying lip service. A top 4 shout is just grandstanding. Many of you appear to be happy to take the gradual approach and give your anti-hero plenty of time. Already the news of a decent signing has brought a change of attitude. A few more signings and the protests will disappear. I said as much at the end of last season.

I do agree we need some wingers, I’ve been saying this for ages. Like you say we have aarons but have no one else in case he gets injured. We have no one at all on the right. This is why I think we keep being linked to thauvin who is generally a winger and plays a little more on the right. Cabella is not a winger. Also we’ve been linked with rolan of Bordeaux who I rate a lot. He is not a centre forward, like those who haven’t seen him play say, and usually plays on the right of a three. He too is worth looking at. He has a knack of ghosting in from the right to score goals and is clever in his movement as he is usually not picked up. Very good player. Quite Suarez esque in his movement actually.
