Newcastle Make Bold £10M Move For Tottenham Winger

8:29 am, Tuesday, July 14th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 38 Comments

The Express are reporting today that Newcastle have put in a £10M bid for Tottenham winger Andros Townsend, and it’s not the first time we have been linked with the 23 year-old England International this summer.

Newcastle have been interested in Townsend for a couple of years now, and he’s not getting a lot of playing time under Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, so he could be sold this summer.

£10M seems like a good offer for the player who was loaned out to many different clubs to get first team games when he was younger.

But the news is that Tottenham want £15M for their winger, and that seems high – and another example of how expensive England players can be – especially England Internationals.

The news recently was that Newcastle could get in another four players over £10M this summer,  and Andros  Townsend would be a good acquisition for Newcastle, and he has loads of skill and can score goals and make goals.

The player lacks consistency but that can come with playing more regularly than he does at Spurs.

He’s played 9 times for England with 3 goals and is a regular in the England squad, and the Leytonstone-born  player has played 86 games for Spurs with  11 goals and 15 assists.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

    Repost from last thread:

It won’t be long before the usual suspects comes and say “just pay the money”!

Gotta be fun to be so lazy faire with other peoples money.

So any news so far on the transfer front? Someone mentioned last night whether we only bid on one player at the time (wouldn’t surprise me)

  • 3 Ron Knee // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:32 AM

Perhaps they’ve never heard of multi-tasking!

  • 4 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:33 AM

Is this player any good or would that money be better spent else where?

  • 5 Toonfan8 // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:34 AM

    no thanks, rather bring Thauvin/Rolán….

  • 6 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:34 AM

I wouldn’t want this guy for £5million, and don’t think we are interested at all. He is probably the countries most overrated player at the moment, by a long stretch.

  • 7 gaz 44 // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:34 AM

I really hope not seen him play plenty over his career and there’s a reason why he wasn’t a spurs regular

  • 8 jayphoto // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:42 AM

@jesper – townsend is a highlight reel player! Hence the decent goal return. His goal and assists stats don’t tell thr whole story though, think at one point he held the record for most shots without scoring a premier league goal. Completely one dimensional, inverted winger who cuts in and blazes it as hard as he can. Occasionally flies in and looks great, mostly ends up in the crowd. Really wouldn’t want him

  • 9 Rotonda heights // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:44 AM

Please no, it’s not a bold move. We don’t need another jet heeled headless chicken with in reality next to zero productivity. Why do you thnk Pochetinno wants rid?

Put 10M towards a Veltman, N’Kolou, Rutiger, Matip, Abdennour, Dragovic where we really need to replace Willo, Saylor and Colo asap.

  • 10 Mag52 // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:45 AM

Andros – sign him up, although 12k. would seem to be a bit more realistic.
Hodgson clearly rates him, and wouldn’t it be nice to see one of ours as a regular in the England team.

  • 11 The next Mike Williamson // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:45 AM

He’s like a really good version of Obertan… but he’s still rubbish.

  • 12 mickalfas // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:45 AM

It would make a lot more sense if it was a CB
Starting to get this horrible feeling that were done now, hope not

  • 13 Toonfan8 // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:46 AM

yes right put this 10M to CB…he wouldnt be much upgrade on Sissoko at RM/RW I think, but better than Gouffran,Obertan…

  • 14 beermonkey // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:50 AM

not sure the amount we have to spend this summer
    I don’t believe the 60mill been reported

if the mitrivic deal gets done next through the door for me has to be a defender

that will take us up to the 40 odd mill mark of which is what I think we will spend

  • 15 Jail for Ashley // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:50 AM

The closet Ashleyist doesn’t want other people spending Mikeys money.

  • 16 mickalfas // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:51 AM

With SM talking about Collo being captain next year, hopefully its at San Lorenzo

  • 17 Jail for Ashley // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:51 AM

Townsend has always looked good for England when he’s played.

  • 18 Lilongwe Geordie // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:51 AM

The majority of his assists have come against lower league opposition or against teams like Shamrock Rovers in the Europa league. In the Premier league for Spurs he has managed just 4 assists and 3 goals.

  • 19 Rotonda heights // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:53 AM

    Mag 52

£12K for Townsend sounds about right !!
£12M for Rutiger or similar on the other hand….

So Hodgson rates Townsend, well that’s ok then, a recomendation from someone who’s failed at every big club he’s been at and couldn’t get England out of the group stages in the WC. Gold…!!

  • 20 Ron Knee // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:53 AM

I think there’ll be more to come, but will they be much-needed upgrades on our defence?

  • 21 Toonfan8 // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:54 AM

when S. Mc Claren said that Collo will be captain?

  • 22 Rotonda heights // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:55 AM

Yes he does look flashy for england but looking at his career stats he is, as someone said, a glorified obertan

  • 23 jayphoto // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:56 AM

Reckon we’ll probably spend 50-60m but can really see Sissoko and Cisse going that will probably bring back in £20m. The window hasn’t really got going yet but that 50m Sterling deal might kickstart things

  • 24 Toonfan8 // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:56 AM

now I am reading at twitter that NUFC gives Mitrovic 48 hours to sort out his future, sounds good for both sides.

  • 25 jayphoto // Jul 14, 2015 at 8:58 AM

Townsend will end up at villa anyway as soon as someone buys Benteke. In this case im quite happy English players are so over priced

Jalisco is the province in Mexico wherein lies Guadalajara.Azteca shows Atlas games.

An article I read this morning ,might have been the mirror or sky sports

  • 28 Jib // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:01 AM

    The next Mike Williamson
My Gran is like a really good version of Obertan.

  • 29 Jail for Ashley // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:02 AM

I’d like to see the captaincy took off of Colo but maybe it would be too much of a slap in the face.

  • 30 beermonkey // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:02 AM

I don’t think we will spend as much I don’t see the club changing that much and they will leave some cash available for jan even though they say they don’t like to deal in jan

don’t think we will sell cisse
but unless McLaren and co can improve sissokos’s first touch I think he might go
if Liverpool want him great, but I think he is miles away from a cl team passing and touch tackling he is miles behind players at cl teams

  • 31 Jail for Ashley // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:04 AM

I think City have benefited a rival club a lot more than themselves with that ridiculous price.

  • 32 Tsunki // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:04 AM

Jesper – Seeing as jeff is taking it easy this morning, and in the interests of furthering your education, it’s ” laissez-faire” another French term we have stolen because it’s sounds better than the dull English equivalent. But I suppose that’s all Ça ne fait rien to you 🙂

  • 33 Santon03 // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:05 AM

Is Austin really worth 15m? Good price or not?
If it’s a good price then why no clubs has met the asking price? it’s a bit odd when so many clubs being linked or hunting for his signature and none has signed him yet when clubs like liverpool and west ham paid more for AC.

  • 34 andrewsneill // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:05 AM

I’d rather not sign a winger than sign Townsend. Horrendously overrated and averages 0.06 goals per game in prem and has only 3 assists since 2012 in the league. Not worth 20% of that fee when players like Lucas Ocampos are available for similar money or less

  • 35 mickalfas // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:06 AM

Might be a slap in the face for him IF we buy a couple of CB’s as well

  • 36 jayphoto // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:07 AM

@beermonkey – i think the club wil always sell its best players under Ashley but reckon hes realised in the modern climate you can make more spending 15m on a player and turning them into 30m players
Wijnaldum and Mitrovic would have huge sell on value if successful whereas Austin for whatever reason is probably towards the top end of what he’ll be worth.
Reckon its why we never buy defenders as theyre sell on value rarely increases much

  • 37 sing in the corner // Jul 14, 2015 at 9:11 AM

I think someone at NUFC should simply walk up to Colo, point out a list of his shirking performances, / disappearances off to South America for extended R&R when he was needed here, remind him of his open desire to be elsewhere…, then actually slap his face and hope he accepts a pay cut in order to leave
