Steve McClaren tasted his first defeat last night as a Newcastle head coach, when the Magpies went down 2-1 to Club Atlas of Mexico in Milwaukee, and we again made a poor start to the game and were 2-0 down after only 16 minutes and then had to try to come back.
Just before half time an excellent rapid breakaway saw Papiss Cisse put Moussa Sissoko through and he hit the ball under the goalkeeper to make it 2-1, but we couldn’t get the equalizer, even though we created a number of chances in the second half.
Papiss Cisse – keep him this summer
Steve McClaren talked to the media after the game at Miller Park last night, and confessed he was impressed with Papiss Cisse:
“It is a unique thing. You can see that with the smiles on their faces that they like playing with each other. They combine very well.”“I thought Papiss was brilliant, he held the ball up and he brought people into the game.”
“It’s a test and a challenge – not just the games, but the travel as well. But we have to deal with it and that’s the challenge for the team to deal with it and train well. We have to be professional and perform well.”
“Football or soccer I should say here, is a passionate game.
“I was delighted with the reaction. We came out and were aggressive and put our foot in. We got the goal because we they were keeping the ball and were cocky
“We got annoyed and stayed annoyed and it got us back in the game.”
Yes – whenever anybody talks about football in the states, that’s American football – so it’s called soccer – although the rest of the world knows football as football.
As we said before, we’d be daft to let Papiss Cisse go – especially when he’s looks like he’s going to be 100% fit next season – for the first time in a long time – and he seems to want to stay at Newcastle too.
We hope Papiss is around come September, however many new strikers we bring through the door this summer.
As a reminder, the 30 year-old Senegal International scored 11 Premier League goals in 21 appearances for us last season, and since he joined us from SC Freiburg in January, 2012 – he’s scored 41 goals in 109 total appearances.

Comment #42You lot don’t even believe in fielding a side of 11 MF’s. Pffaaww. Absolute humbug!!! All the top sides are adopting the 11 MF player approach. I can’t believe the number of dinosaurs on here who want actual CB’s and strikers and the like..

Ha, yes, I knew I had exaggerated slightly, and I knew there would be one or two to pick up on it. If there was a top level footballer from Malawi then I would have used here as a comparison. Minimum wage here is about £0.87p a day.
Our Toon,
In this industry, if you search too much for value and bargains you will be burnt more times than you succeed.

Comment #44Our defense looks good. Just ask Schteve. We’re set for at least 5 more years with Willo, Colo, and Saylor. Beautiful.

Since bursting on the scene both Wilshire and Barkley haven’t progressed, Wilshire through injuries and probably through smoking, Barkley struggled at Everton big time last season, even Everton fans blasted him at times as he’s very very inconsistent….wants to do it all himself!!
When England got knocked out of a u21 tournament 2 years ago or maybe 4 years ago it was said that the attitude of the youngsters was disgraceful, they weren’t bothered they think they’ve made it….virtually all of them are millionaires. Where as the kids from less privileged backgrounds or less privileged countries fight tooth and nail to get to where they are

Comment #48McClaren Fast Becoming A Big Fan Of This Striker.
In other words he has resigned himself to missing out on a striker costing over 3 million, and Cisse fits the bill with no outlay. Ashley out.

Watching children grow up in harder neighbourhoods of the world taught me that, not Google.
There’s a big uninfected world out there where their IS still such a thing as society. For a while longer,at least.

Comment #54It’s not too late to turn things round. Forget scumbag billionaires and leaders owned by the wealthy. The US is a cesspool of greed, as is China. Ruthless and relentless. Time to out the whole rotten bunch.

I don’t think Martinez knows how to use Barkley. From what I have sen of Barkley he doesn’t seem like he thinks he has made it. He doesn’t suit a Martinez side though.
As for others thinking they have made it, quite pssibly. The Championship was the 7th best paid league in Europe in 13/14 – it may have dropped, but not significantly I wouldn’t have thought.
English football development is a joke though. I’ve written and complained about this for years privately and publicly. Until the FA gets an executive who isn’t self involved and just wants to be a legend in his own lunchtime, nowt will change.
It is all about here and now. What they can get. Nothing to do with development and improving.
