Newcastle Linked With Yet Another International Striker

4:47 pm, Wednesday, July 15th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 28 Comments

Newcastle have been linked with a (high) number of strikers already this summer, and news today that we are supposed to be interested in Sporting Lisbon’s 27 year-old striker Islam Slimani, who has been at the Lisbon club for two years now. and is an Algerian International.

Islam Slimani in action against Chelsea in December

Slimani has played 37 times for Algeria with 15 goals and he had a very good World Cup last summer in Brazil and also played in the African Cup[ of Nations earlier this year, when they were beaten 3-1 in the quarter finals by Ivory Coast.

The report is in HITC Sport, who are saying that Crystal Palace, Leicester, West Brom and Newcastle have made inquiries about the Algerian.

It still seems that the two strikers Newcastle want are Charlie Austin and Aleksandar Mitrovic, but these could be alternatives if we cannot get them on Tyneside, always assuming we are really interested in the 27 year-old 6ft 1ins tall Algerian.

Slimani grew up in the western Algiers suburb of Ain Benian, and he played for two Algerian clubs, JSM Cheraga and CR Belouizdad before joining Sporting two years ago.

In the two seasons he has spent in Lisbon he has scored 25 goals in 63 appearances and he seems a decent enough striker.

We suppose it’s not too surprising that with four (now fairly rich) Premier League clubs said to be interested in the player, Sporting Lisbon are asking a high fee for him – £10M.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Islam Slim is too skinny for us!!! And he’s not a MF so we’re not interested!!! Harrumph…

  • 2 GeordieTwo // Jul 15, 2015 at 4:54 PM

Give me 6 or 7 more decent incoming MF’s any day. We don’t need strikers or CB’s!! It’s obvious, just ask Schteve…

Think of him as a very, very attacking MF who likes to take up an extremely advanced position.

  • 4 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 15, 2015 at 4:55 PM

We are still fsvorites for relegation as long as no defenders have been signed..

  • 5 GeordieTwo // Jul 15, 2015 at 4:56 PM

No, no, I just can’t do it YCMIU mate. It’s clear we need more REAL, manly MF’s!!! What about an entire starting 11 of MF’s? Even the keeper. You know you lot want to try it. Don’t play innocent with me….Harrumph.

In Latin American Countries the season is split into 2 , the Apertura and , the Clausura.
The fixtures you showed were for the Apertura, the Clausura lasts until end of August (I think ) and , a bit like the NFL at Wembley , because the MLS is finished , is being played in the States for all the mexican expats. Also it is very hot in Mexico .
Our game was just a one off in the middle of their season.

We can let some of wor MF’s sit deep ilovetoon mate. Don’t fuss yourself lad. With a rover MF and several defensive MF’s to kill the opponents attack we’ll be sitting pretty! Huzzah!!!

  • 8 BandB // Jul 15, 2015 at 4:58 PM

The apertura (opening) starts in July and runs until December.
The clausura (close) runs from January until May.
    They are playing pre-season friendlies.

Wins and losses in freindlies dont concern me much. All i want to see is players getting fit and starting to gel. Maybe the last couple should be a bit more competetive since the first 11 should be just about sorted by then. There might be a positive buzz here if we beat BMG well in the last one.

I like a deep lying back four of Obertain, Tiote, Colback, and Gouffy personally… Yes that’s the ticket lads. Deep lying midfielders. How many MF’s on the books now?? 17? 18? Plenty to go round.

  • 11 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:01 PM

We dont have a GK. We have a DDDDDDM who likes to cover behind the other Very Defensive Midfielders, and is allowed to pick the ball up.

  • 12 GeordieTwo // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:01 PM

Not that I’m taking the mickey out of wor transfer policy or anything….Harrumph

  • 13 Jib // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:03 PM

Sorry I got that the wrong way round (I always do)
The results you showed were the Clausura.
We are in the middle of their Apertura

  • 14 GeordieTwo // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:03 PM

Yes, very good YCMIU mate… 😆 This is clearly the way all the top, top clubs operate. Fool people into thinking you’ve turned over a new leaf with a very passionate end of season interview and then go out and buy another MF but ignore all the pressing needs in the squad….Beautiful Mike.

Surely the argument being advanced is that all friendlies are equally meaningless?
I have no doubt it will be perfectly acceptable to jabber excitedly about us beating anyone. And so we should. Which makes it hypocrisy to try to slap down reasonable concerns over the defeats.

  • 16 BandB // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:04 PM

    No we aren’t.
Their first league game is later this month.

  • 17 Polarboy // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:05 PM

I think it’s obvious that we will eventually get some defenders in. We do really seem to be willing to pay some money for decent players, so hopefully they will come. If we get Banega it’s nothing to turn our noses up at, he is a class player by the looks of it and could fit into a midfield five along with Wini and Siem quite easily.

  • 18 Jib // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:05 PM

I think you have had a WHOOPS moment

  • 19 GeordieTwo // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:08 PM

No, we’ve switched to the modern day midfield 11 Polarboy. I’m not sure where all these rumours about bringing in strikers and CB’s started but it’s all tosh mate. Keep your eyes open for several more top MF signings like Cabella, or Obertan or Gouffy. That’s the ticket Mike.

  • 20 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:09 PM

Readonable concerns, like the defense not being there, and some players looking slower than they maybe should. I dont think there is any problem with that. The freindlies are there to show up those things without the result mattering…. its the “we will get relegated playing like that” statements that are pretty pointless at this stage. (I know it wasnt you, but there have been a couple). It would be just as silly if a few had said “we dominated gateshead, we are top four for sure playing like that”.

  • 21 GeordieTwo // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:09 PM

I’m in favour of asking the FA to add any points we accrue from the pre-season to our league totals. We need a handicap of sorts with Mike as owner….

  • 22 BandB // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:09 PM

    No I haven’t.
The last game of last season was in May, and the first game of next season is on July 25.

  • 23 GeordieTwo // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:11 PM

I believe in fair, reasonable, calm criticism of the club and it’s wonderful owner. Now….we can always fong them as I’ve already stated, but let’s look at the positives shall we? Mike has lost weight and really, really loves the supporters again. He’s going to stay forever (the approximate amount of time it will take him to win something). We’ve got to try to understand this pillock…..errr man.

  • 24 YouCouldn'tMakeItUp // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:14 PM

Atlas first game is July 25/26 depending on which of those links you look at. On one of them it has their season record as 0-0-0…IE no games played yet.

  • 25 BandB // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:14 PM

Let’s start a more balanced debate.

After Steve McClaren, who is the best manager in the league?

  • 26 scottoon // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:15 PM

G2 – does this mean we will now be selling wor Belgian Midget Strikers?

  • 27 GeordieTwo // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:15 PM

Just checking The Book of Low Bids for references to MF policy and strategy…..Ah here it is:
“Always maintain a very large crop of MF’s. The absolute minimum is 16. Go below 16 and you might have to buy some players in other positions….very dicey!!!! Make a couple of derisory bids early in the window for CB’s or strikers to get the supporters off your back if you like, but get those MF’s in!!!!”
    Beautiful strategy Lee….

  • 28 Jib // Jul 15, 2015 at 5:20 PM

They take a break in a 2 part season to play their version of the FA cup in the States .
Their fitness levels don’t drop .
They are playing nothing like preseason friendlies .

    You said
    I don’t follow this.
It seems their season runs over more or less the same period as ours and that they are also playing pre-season friendlies.”

I could see your eyelashes fluttering as you were thinking (got the bastid !!!)

    You were clearly wrong
If you backtrack any more you’ll get a speeding ticket in reverse gear.
