Claims Charlie Austin To Newcastle A Done Deal

5:01 pm, Thursday, July 16th, 2015 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 73 Comments

Journalist Daniel Ainsworth has just tweeted it’s his understanding that Charlie Austin is a done deal.

paul dummett charlie austin

Charlie Austin – a done deal for Newcastle?

It looks like we may have paid the full £15M for Austin and if Daniel is right maybe Steve McClaren can persuade Mike Ashley to spend the money.

Mirror Journalist Simon Bird had said it was his understanding about six weeks ago that this was a done deal – but it didn’t happen then.

However what did come out at the time was that Newcastle were said to be over-enthusiastic about the deal, and Simon though the deal was imminent.

If we do sign him it does mean that Newcastle seem to have been confident they could get Charlie through the door.

Comments welcome.

If we are indeed paying full whack for Austin, then i have serious doubts (as i have since monday night) that Mitrovic will be coming.

Didn’t Austin fail his medical with a dodgy knee at Hull two years ago? We’ll have been haggling over paying the full £15m unless its based on appearances

  • 8 Jib // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:09 PM

    OP
    You are right
Here’s “you know who” – putting a lump on Charlie Austin.

If the FCB is starting to worry about money, and if Mitrovic signs that’s about £43m
    What about the defence ?
    Is there any money left?

  • 10 Big Pappa Cissé // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:09 PM

Not going to get carried away, but would much rather we go for a PL proven striker than taking a gamble on Mitrovic .

15 million is nowt considering Liverpool are going to pay 32 for Benteke .

  • 11 hibbit // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:10 PM

i still can not work out why mits family went looking at houses on monday if he is not coming

    Fingers still crossed !!!!!

the back 4 is still my big worry we just leak goals

  • 14 kevymartins // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:16 PM

@jail from previous post. I would pay £30m for a player even if we didn’t need him. It’s about time we splashed some cash.

  • 15 Belfast // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:16 PM

Who the ferk is Daniel Ashworth ?

  • 16 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:17 PM

You’ve got to laugh at the idea of Colo being a captain. He’s quiet, flinches when the ball’s driven towards him, and isn’t brave enough to attack a ball with his head from a corner.

And Janmaat. He had an average season. Nothing more. What real leadership qualities did he show?

The club should be signing leaders and potential captains. The squad has a dearth of gritty characters.

  • 17 toonicle // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:17 PM

Anyone else feel they don’t really want Mitro anymore anyways? After the whole thing with his dad i’d rather not even sign him, dad will push for a move the first season he has over 10 goals.

  • 18 WWSBRD // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:18 PM

Him and Mitrovic? Club did say they were after 2 CFs but that’s far from what I was expecting will wait and see if it happens though

Can’t see Cisse sticking around, although I’d be upset to lose him, not sure how assured he would be in the team and the ride he is getting from the papers currently

  • 19 Liverpool Mag // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:18 PM

If we’re signing two strikers I’d be expecting that means that Cisse is leaving, he has one year left on his contract, a bum knee and has attracted bad headlines in the last couple of years. And there’s no way we would have 4 senior strikers with Mit, Austin, Cisse and Riviere s well as the youth prospects in Armstrong and Perez and Gouffy and de Jong who can play the position.

Who knows, maybe Cisse is going to Anderlecht as part of the deal.

  • 20 kevymartins // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:19 PM

@belfast Claims he works for Espn but he’s probably some alcho sitting in McDonalds bathroom to use there free wi-fi.

  • 21 Liverpool Mag // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:19 PM

Belfast @13 he’s apparently a journalist and editor for ESPN, can’t work out whether that means he knows anything though…

  • 22 JDdubai // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:20 PM

Really cant see us getting both these guys, doesnt make sense.

Both will want assurances they will be first choice, especially in the run up to the Euros, we play 1 up front most likely and they are both similar styles.

No way we will get both, think we are playing them against each other trying to force an answer from Mitrovic.

  • 23 optimistic prime // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:20 PM

    What do people want?

    Our second choice player
    Or
A playef with ambitions above us and we’re his second choice?

    Lacazzete or a Rivierre?

  • 24 optimistic prime // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:22 PM

Ps, if you don’t go for the second choice you’ll never improve

  • 25 Jamseyd24 // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:22 PM

if both come in the cisse is sure to be sold. Still need x2 defenders, CB and someone who can play both LB and CB. not to sure about or LB position

  • 26 Jail for Ashley // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:22 PM

Listening to talksport, mentioned Lpool bidding for Benteke but nowt about us.

We must be up to a canny cricket score of players linked.

  • 30 nut meg // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:25 PM

SM will probably want to rotate the squad to keep them fresh!

  • 31 Sazzer // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:26 PM

Cisse, Austin and Mitrovic are all good strikers.

Anderlecht can get Riviere + Gouffran on loan with option to buy if the want. Or Armstrong with no option to buy.

  • 32 ToonRich // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:26 PM

    @16, GINI for CAPTAIN 🙂

  • 33 kevymartins // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:26 PM

@OP atleaste it’s players like Austin and Mitrovic and not Nolan Roux and Melvut Erding.

  • 34 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:27 PM

I hope we dont sign Austin or Mitrovic and then get rid of Cisse though as it means we have not improved the squad at all !

Keep Cisse for the next season or 2 and then let him go he will provide enough competition and goals which would be worth more than the 7 or 8 million we would get for him !!!

I cant imagine Austin or Mitrovic will not want to be first choice and who knows if Cisse would be happy on the bench??

  • 35 JDdubai // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:27 PM

    Hibbit

Yeah i know, but only 1 target man/CF. he goes with smaller, quicker players either side.

Austin and Mitrovic are both target men, cant see either of them playing wider or working as a partnership.

  • 36 Belfast // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:29 PM

Googled him and can’t find anything about him lol

  • 37 will die for the toon army // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:29 PM

I wish Mitrovic still come. His agent is a businesman and he will do all he can do get the deal thru

  • 38 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:30 PM

@hibbit. Neither Austin or Mitrovic are going to want to or should play wide in a front three. We’ve actually set up as 4-2-3-1. I certainly won’t complain if we end up getting both, I’m just intrigued as to how we will accommodate both.

  • 39 Jib // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:33 PM

I wonder , if as rumoured yesterday , that it is a double deal with Austin and Fer ?

  • 40 kevymartins // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:33 PM

@Polarboy of we did sign both in reality you would expect the club to do what they did with Perez. Set out a plan for him and tell him he will play second string and they will develope him. He is only 20. But going by him and his dad I’m pritty sure they would not accept that.

  • 41 Jewishgeordie // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:33 PM

  • 43 kevymartins // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:35 PM

@Belfast change Ashworth to Ainsworth and see what you get ????

  • 44 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:36 PM

@kevymartins . Mate however much we have changed with regard to transfers there is no way we would pay 13-15 million for a development player.

He’s a fake with no affiliation to ESPN whatsoever, confirmed previously by other ESPN staff on twitter.

  • 48 The Newcastle Armchair // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:38 PM

    blackley and brownlie

On signing potential captains and leaders, we have just signed Wijnaldum, the captain who guided PSV to the Eredivisie last season.

  • 49 Belfast // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:39 PM

Still can’t find out about him even with the correct name 🙂

  • 50 kevymartins // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:39 PM

I’d say we are 90% not going to sign Austin after I seen on Twitter the good old Cwarr tweet were gona sign him.

  • 51 The Great Valerio // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:40 PM

    ‘Through the door’ though… *yawn*

  • 52 lukes26 // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:40 PM

He claimed Bas Dost and Joel Matip were ‘done deals’ a few weeks ago

  • 56 The Newcastle Armchair // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:42 PM

I don’t think striker should be priority right now. In fact, the Ashley side of me thinks that we could get by this season without an extra one

  • 57 The Newcastle Armchair // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:44 PM

    Andy

You reckon sissoko could hold the midfield himself? The man has all the physicality in the world but no rarely shows ability

  • 58 ilovetoon8788 // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:45 PM

Yup. We badly need a centre back or we will struggle. Austin or not.

  • 59 ochytoon // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:45 PM

    Belfast
Can’t take anything you see on twitter as gospel, journos (with one or two exceptions) know just as much as we do when it comes to reliable transfer news.

  • 60 WLtoon // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:45 PM

No doubt we,ll have bloggers naming their starting 11 including Mits and Austin saying as some numpty has stated that both deals are close or even done.
Ive put my team out and it does,nt include either of these 2.simply bcos they are,nt a part of the set up.

  • 61 Lee Charnley Bunga Party // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:46 PM

In my view I can see Perez getting the left forward role next season cutting in and causing bother to full backs and centre backs in a 4231 or 433

  • 62 The Newcastle Armchair // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:47 PM

Perez definitely one to watch next season

  • 63 lukes26 // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:50 PM

I don’t understand why people keep putting Sissoko in Defensive Mid positions in their line-ups

Do you remember Sissoko ever making a sliding tackle…..he doesnt seem to enjoy defending

  • 64 geordieboy83 // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:51 PM

Toon Andy that’s the formation I’ve been banging on about as jaan and hairdryer can bomb on. Take shaqiri out as never gunna happen though and put tiote or colback in there

  • 65 mickalfas // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:51 PM

Whoever signs for us ,let’s hope we can negotiate a reduction in the price and get rid of the deadwood or some of them
    Willo to QPR ?
Goofy and Riviere to Anderlecht ?

  • 66 hibbit // Jul 16, 2015 at 5:53 PM

people are getting carried away with the teams there picking we have signed 1 player other then that its the flops of last season its asking a lot of Mc and his coaches to turn it round with very little new blood

  • 67 will die for the toon army // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:05 PM

All we need is one CB and we draft him with Durmett for the long term

  • 68 Polarboy // Jul 16, 2015 at 6:14 PM

Some agent called Muzzi Ozcan has tweeted congratulations to Austin on his move to us. Don’t know who this guy represents or what his affiliation to Austin is, but its more wood to the fire if nothing else.

  • 69 Moonraker15 // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:00 PM

    Lukes26

Ainsworth tweeted positively about Winnie weeks ago but un sure about Mit and Matip so I think he’s reliable!

  • 70 lee-toon // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:10 PM

  • 71 NEWEXPATMAGPIE // Jul 16, 2015 at 7:17 PM

    @7:

Demba Ba failed a medical sowewhere too before he came to us?

Look how he banged em in for us!

  • 72 Looney_toon_89 // Jul 16, 2015 at 9:36 PM

I thought a done deal was fee agreed, terms agreed, medical completed, contract signed. None of those have happened

  • 73 CAC // Jul 16, 2015 at 11:08 PM

Get Austin in then go full out for two center backs. Enough if this Mitrovic drama!
